A live look at the board right now. Everything is listed on time, and thats a far cry from what happened yesterday morning with this signal problem related to amtrak. And it had this spiraling effect on the Commuter Rail. And this is video yesterday of these packed stations as commuters had to find alternate ways to get to and from work because most of the commuter trains could not make it all the way to south station. They were diverted to other stations, and then commuters were told to pack on to alreadypacked subway stations. All of this were being told was related to a signal problem with amtrak. We have some video of workers. They worked all yesterday evening, all through the night to try and address this signal problem. It was a very critical part of the system that if it went down they were left with only manually using this signal, and that meant very few trains could make it in and out of south station. So overnight they were able to fix the problem. They had cob contingency plans in place, which commuters were made aware of. Those contingency plans not needed. The boards say on time. Anyone who takes a Commuter Rail train into south station can expect that train this morning to go all the way to its final destination. Of course, well have updates for you on that coming up in fast track traffic. Christa still expect some delays. Theyre sending out a tweet saying the Framingham Worcester line is operating ten to 15 minutes late, as well. Be prepared for that. As for the weather out there, chris, kind of a cold morning to be waiting at those platd platforms. Chris the wind speeds pretty much dead calm. Even the city of boston only 10mph. Its a cold start. Temperatures into the teens and 20s now, but its a seasonable day. That will put temperatures this afternoon close to 40 degrees. And if you want milder air, just wait another day. Were close to 50 both on saturday and on sunday. We do have a few rain and snow winthrop coming in right now at 19 degrees. Its 21 officially in boston. 19 in melrose. 20 in waltham. Lowell at 13. Hampstead, New Hampshire, at 13. Hudson, New Hampshire, at 10. So we have some colder spots that are in the upper Single Digits and lower teens, lower teens stretching from fitchburg down 290 there into 190, as well. All the way into the city of worcester. 21 in foxborough, West Bridgewater at 18. And west wareham at 21 and borne checking in at 23 this morning. You get the picture. Its a cold start, but very little wind. About 9mph in the city of boston. Calm in a lot of the suburbs. With the sunshine this morning, it will warm up fairly quickly. However, that sunshine fades into the afternoon as clouds advance in from the west. Best chance of some scattered snow showers going to scattered rain showers will be overnight tonight. Well call it a 60 chance of that. On saturday 30 . Even within saturday, you really have to book end it with the rain chances where you have a chance of scattered showers first thing in the morning and close to dinnertime, but youre getting a lot of dry hours in there on saturday with temperatures close to 50 degrees in the afternoon. In terms of the snow showers tonight, not a big event for us. But there may be towns that get away with a coating to an inch of snow, especially in the northern pike in the hillary terrain of Worcester County. If youre heading up skiing, it looks like a good two, three, four inches of snow across central and northern new england. Travel today, quiet across a lot of the country. Look at that 71 in st. Lucie. 59 in chicago. It wont get into the 70s over the weekend, but well get a piece of the warmth working in as we roll into saturday and sunday, has the milder air works in and again perhaps a lateday shower, as well, for tomorrow. Milder start on sunday. Temperatures starting off in the 30s to near 40. Low 50s in the afternoon. And despite being that warm, weak area of low pressure sliding quickly to the south of us on sunday night, may provide a little bit of rain and snow to the area, but i do expect that to be done by 7 00 on monday morning. Back into the low 40s monday afternoon. Next chance for more significant storm system midweek. Well keep an eye on that traffic. Sarah for the latest on your morning commute, lets send it over to Danielle Gersh with more. Danielle thanks, sarah. Good morning, everyone. Great news. Lets head outside now. Least the expressway. Slow drive. Lets go to the maps. You can see from braintree into boston, thats 24 minutes. South of town, this is an accident on 24 northbound right at 128 causing some minor delays there. No major issues to tell you about on the pike or heading into town on 93 or route 1. He was diagnosed with stage one lymphoma in august and was forced to misadvertise rest of the season. In october he learned his cancer was in remission. Hes excited to be back with the team and the sox are hoping to bounce back following a second straight lastplace finish. Everyone in this locker room, everyone who plays this game, all we want to do is win. If we have a lot of talented players in this clubhouse and guys we think are capable of doing what we want to do by the end of the year. It doesnt change the intensity or the thoroughness that you go about each and every day. We just want to put every guy in a position to succeed, and that should allow us as a team to hopefully get off to a good start. Sarah the sox are hoping to avoid a Third Straight losing season, something that hasnt happened since 1994. Christa well, the celtics decided not to make any deals before thursdays nba trade deadline. They had been rumored to be interested in several bigname players, but cs president danny ainge says those deals didnt to jeopardize the future for a shortterm fix. Boston is currently third place in the eastern conference. And the bruins shut out by the predators in nashville. Craig smith scoring just about three minutes into the game, and that was all the offense nashville would really need. The bs lost it 20 and they wrap up their road trip by visiting tyler seguin and the dallas stars coming up saturday night. Sarah still ahead, a crash on camera. So you heard it a second ago. South station. The regular Commuter Rail schedule is back. We do have some delays, though, to talk about this morning. Well have a full report coming up and a key interview, but first a check of the forecast. Heres Chris Lambert with that. Chris good morning, christa. If youre headed out to the stop, we need to bundle up, the hats, the gloves, the heavier winter jacket as temperatures once again back in the teens outside the city of boston, 21 in boston. The winds fairly light. We dont have a constant gusty wind this morning. A lot of sunshine once the sun comes up. We have more clouds off to the west of us. Those clouds spilling in this afternoon, foreshadowing some snow showers to arrive this evening. Now sunny skies through about early afternoon. Upper 30s to near 40. So completely seasonal for this time of year, and i dont expect a lot of snow. The best chance for a coating to perhaps an inch of snow north of the mass pike this evening. And well even watch some of those snow showers transition over to a few rain showers as we work into the predawn hours tomorrow. So its a mild start on saturday. Temperatures over the weekend running close to 50 degrees. And the best chance of passing shower on saturday first thing in the morning and perhaps a brief passing shower late in the day, otherwise mainly dry over the weekend. Sarah so again, were getting some good news this morning on the commute. The amtrak signal issue has been fixed and all southstation trains are become on track. Christa Frank Depaula, the general manager of the mbta, joining us now. Thank you for taking time out to talk with us. Thank you. Christa can you tell us what the cause of the signal malfunction was and why it took amtrak roughly now 24 hours to get this thing fixed . The actual root cause appears where they lost the program that controls the movement of the switches. Amtrak personnel actually traveled up from their Headquarters Office near d. C. , and they actually had a laptop with a new program on it. They had to reprogram all of the units here in order to restore that function, but they did that overnight, and by about 5 30 a. M. , control was back to normal. Sarah were taking a live look at the board right now at south station. It says all trains on time, but are you expecting delays throughout the day because of what happened yesterday . There were some residual delays this morning because we had started our Morning Service before everything was restored. We think over time those will dissipate and barring any other mechanical or electrical problem, we expect to run a normal schedule this morning. Christa so there were a lot of frustrated commuters, as you know. Were taking a look at some video with some of these packed stations yesterday. And a lot of anger, frankly, about the lack of communication in their view. What can you tell people now 24 hours into this about why it took so long to get this fixed . Well, first of all, we want to apologize to our customers and we want to thank them for their patience. Mbta and key owe la staff had to react in relatively few short hours to come up with a complete alternative schedule to get people home who had come into the city. As i said earlier, it took amtrak sending up experts from their home office in order to fix this problem. The technology was beyond the local maintenance staff. Attention. It was people worked all night soon as possible. Sarah so you said it was a Software Problem. How do you try to prevent or try to guarantee that Something Like this wont happen again in the future . We plan on sitting down with amtrak officials and going over we dont want to touch the system right now. Its running. But we think over the next 24, 48 hours well do a debrief and figure out if we need to do something to make it more resilient going forward. Christa all right, Frank Depaula with the mbta. We thank you so much. I know a lot of people were waiting on pins and needles trying to see what this morning commute was going to bring after such horrible experiences for so many people yesterday. So that is really good news that this morning. So as we say goodbye to him, we want to introduce gurr Danielle Gersh, who has been watching these delays. As we take a live look at the board, danielle, some minor delays, is that what were talking about . Danielle delays are much better. We have a few ten to 15minute delays, but for the most part everything is running in and out of south station. Heres the expressway. Not a bad drive. Lets go to the maps. You can see 16 minutes from braintree into boston. A little bit of slow and go. This is in randolph on 24 northbound right at 128. So thats causing some backup on 24 northbound there. The pike from framingham green. 93 southbound, as you head over 495, no issues. A little bit of slowing as you head into boston through somerville, route 1 looking pretty good so far this morning. Back to you, guys. Sarah the man who was arrested at a hotel many boston is expected to be arraigned today before traveling to connecticut to face a Domestic Assault charge. Officers directed the man after a swat team stormed the hotel. Police say the man was in a room at the Marriott Hotel in south bay, but he refused to leave on thursday. Officials eventually went into the room and arrested him. No one was hurt. Christa now to an interview you will see here on just one station.
