He has the very latest on the situation, whats going on right yeah crews are still busy work taking up lanes in the theater district as crews work to clean up the mess here, it began early this morning with a broken water main, followed by fire. [ sirens ] we a firefighter hit the door and we just left. Reporter thick acrid smoke spewing from in chinatown just after 9 00 this morning, forcing as many as 100 people staying at the boston youth hostel out in the streets bundled up in blankets. Just got here yesterday on a red eye flight and trying to get a bit of shuteye and suddenly being told to get out. Reporter the manhole fires were sparked by this hours earlier, a 20 inch water main burst, sending thousands and thousands and thousands gallons of water cascading down the were talking about some of these pipes have been in the ground for decades. Maybe some a century long. Thats certainly something were worked on. Reporter roads in the area sealed off for hours while firefighters used a special foam to knock down the stubborn flames. Reporter Rockland Police say the deputy had turned on his lights and siren to answer a call. Two cars pulled over, but the third car in front of the line didnt, and instead turned left, then was hit by the sheriffs cruiser. We really dont know if the distractions may have been going on at the time. It we do know the lights and sirens were on. There were witnesses, and the two vehicles that did pull over to the right, they did stop. Reporter the chief says the officer got help quickly, who lives just steps from the scene. Rockland police and the Sheriffs Department say theyre not sure what kind of call that the officer was responding to with lights and sirens. They say they dont think it came out of dispatch.
