Two construction workers tragically killed when a trench gives way in the south end. They were in a hole that filled with water in just a matter of moments. This all happened near the intersection of dartmouth and tremont street. Brandon gunnoe is live with what we know at this hour. Brandon . Brandon well, john, we just got off the phone with boston fire. They tell us one of the mens bodies has been recovered, but they are still trying to recover the other mans body. Im going to step out of the way so you can see this recovery effort still taking place. The problem right now is just how safe is the structure of the street and the sidewalk and down inside that trench . Its simply too dangerous to go down in there. So they have to carefully remove the debris thats caved in, but they tell us one of the mens bodies has been lovered. Two construction work verse died after a water main broke, flooding the two men trapped in a trench. It looked like somehow a pipe must have broke, and unfortunately they werent able to get themselves out of the hole. This is like 20 feet deep down there . The firefighter said about 12 to 15 feet deep. Brandon it happened outside a brownstone in bostons south end. A mieft construction crew was working in the trench started to rush in. Other workers escaped and tried to rescue the two men, but it was too late. I shut the water off. It appears to be a rescue operation. A recovery operation, i should say to, get these two people out. Brandon witnesses described a panic scene as water flooded the street, as well. Workers tried to console each other after the two men died in the accident. Its sad. You know, construction is a dangerous, dangerous field. Still working, and basically what theyve got is a big piece of equipment in there thats sucking that debris thats just caved in there. They have to be careful about it because of just how safe that structure is inside the trench, but again, Boston Fire Department telling me that one of the mens bodies has been recovered. Tim certainly a scary scene for folks out here behind me at the intersection of tremont and dartmouth street. This is obviously a busy part of town, especially on an early friday afternoon, with an awful lot of people outside and also working in the area. They say that water came out as shouldnt happen to nobody. Tim cell phone video shows just how quickly the water covered dartmouth street while people sprinted for head. Water was skirting out of the ground, and we could see the workers running around in a panic. All of them were trying to get help. Tim two men were trapped inside the trench as water filled the hole. The first thing i saw was a bunch of water gushing real quick, coming toward the middle of the street. Tim some of the workers were able to get out of the street. Some guys came out wet. The way the workers appeared when they left here, you could tell that something was really wrong. Tim in the minutes an hours that followed, many on these packed streets watched as workers consoled each other after this tragic work accident. With the exception of businesses right next to where this happened, nearly all of the restaurants and stores on this stretch of road and this part of town have remained open for this friday night rush. They are located here on hyde park avenue here in roslindale. The company, according to their web site, says they are a secondgeneration Drain Company that fixes everything from household to hotel drains. Here at the workplace, workers have been gathering all day, some even put flowers on the door. The company was established in 1978, and now another Family Member runs this business. We spoke with man nearby who says one of the victims is a grandfather and was recently here at the business introducing everyone to his grandchild. He didnt have bad bone in he did so much for us, too, and i. Its just a tragedy what happened. Its just very sad. Im still shocked that it happened. I still cant believe that it happened. Alex according to osha, which is the Occupational Safety and health straight, the company has been cited five times since 2006. Most recently in september 2015 for two repeat violations involving underground the Atlantic Drain Company was cited for not having a required rescue team. They were also cited for improper safety instruction, including evacuation plans. Since 2007, osha showed this Atlantic Drain Company has been cited 95,600 dollars. Mateo claims he met the girl on social media at the beginning of the week and thought she was 18. Police were quick the locate mateo and arrest him because he was wearing one of those g. P. S. Tracking devices as a pretrial condition connected to his arrest back in april on charges of extortion and disseminating obscene material. Im worried about bawr. Shes 13 years old. She has aspergers. Blowing up a newspaper works in salem called to court today. 23yearold john richard and 20yearold lawrence gilleman allegedly used some fireworks to blow up a Rainbow Times newspaper box. The Rainbow Times is the largest l. G. B. T. Newspaper in new england. The explosion happened back in august. It was caught on surveillance video. That helped Police Identify the men and it did lead to their arrest. Police say they were originally investigating this as a hate crime, but they saw no evidence of that. To complicate matters, in the worcester hills, in fact, all across southern new england, now leaves are beginning to clock those storm drains. So likely leading to street flooding, and that could be sewer street flooding in some situations. It does not take that much water to turn an event south. Number. 2. 5 feet of water.
