the family believes there are more suspects. the memorial for 7-year-old heaven sutton continues to grow outside her family's home. wednesday night she was selling candy in the neighborhood when police say gang members started shooting at each other. she was caught in the crossfire and hit and killed. today good news for the family from the chicago police department. police have a suspect in custody. summit gary mccarthy made the announcement while speaking at a neighborhood event. >> last night at 1:00 the -- 1:00, we took into custody the person we believe is responsible for that shooting. >> her mother says she's grateful for the fast work by the police department. >> i'm hurt. i can't change that. but the plefment is helping me. it the only took four days and they got a man. they're doing their job and i'm thankful. >> still, the family says there are other suspects out there and they need the public's help tracking them down. >> these people are in hiding. just to find out they have someone in custody, it makes our family happy to know that the efforts of the chicago police have been tremendous. >> the family has experienced loss before, which is why heaven sutton's murder is even more painful. >> my mother was murdered in 1984. no one stepped up. no one saw nothing and that case is still unsolved. but today for my 7-year-old daughter, i thank y'all for stepping is calling last night's deadly storms that left 11 dead on par with hurricane irene. intense heat pushed temperatures to triple digits for much of the midwest, south and east coast. virginia was hit the hardest and at one point had one million more power outages than any other state. at least 3,000 homes are still without power and many areas, like washingn, d.c., could be without power for up to [sobbing] oh, my god. the smoke in the air is so bad. >> that came from nicole frye, one of many being forced to flee from their homes in colorado. the waldo canyon fire has scorched nearly 28 square miles and nearly 350 homes have been destroyedful >> after days of being on the defensive, firefighters are making notable progress. authorities say now the waldo canyon fire is 45% contained, a big difference from the 15% containment they announced on friday. look at the mountain ridge behind me. you can see the progress from here. just on friday you could see plumes of smoke coming off the mountainside. today what you're looking at is hot spots that are just smoldering and that's something firefighters are going to continue to attack and clearly the fire has already affected tense of thousands of residents here in colorado springs. many of them will be able to take a bus tour tomorrow to look at their charred neighborhoods, to see what's left of the property, what's left behind by the flames that's burned down much of their homes. clearly it is a very tough time for residents in some communities, but other neighborhoods, their evacuation orders have been lifted so many residents are able to return. still, authorities are investigating the cause of this fire, which is the big question for so many residents here in colorado springs. >> in his weekly radio address, president obama was silent on the supreme court's ruling on his health care legislation. instead, the chief executive journeyed to colorado to visit the devastation caused by the wildfires you just heard about. the president addressed the nation from there. >> we don't usually do weekly addresses like this but i thought it was a good opportunity for us to focus attention on a problem that's going on here in colorado springs. it's important that we're there for them. >> mr. obama appealed for help. he encouraged americans who are able to donate to contact the american red cross to make a contribution. the republicans in their address used the time to review the supreme court's ruling on obama care. nevada senator called the legislation unworkable, unaffordable and very unpopular. >> the fact is that this is the same failed policy that won't lower the cost of health care in america. on thursday, i was in the courtroom as the supreme court ruled that the president's health care law is what the president claimed it was not -- a new tax. >> and barasso added that republicans in congress will fight to repeal the president's health care law. >> still ahead, governor quinn signs a new state budget today, closing prisons and mental health centers. >> plus, what's up for grabs as elgin as the soldier memorabilia auction closes tomorrow? [ male announcer ] we are insurance. ♪ we are farmers ♪ ♪ bum, ba-da-bum, bum, bum, bum ♪ >> humid all day humid in our studio still. >> oh, it's awful. we had a high today of 92 in chicago and this may be one of the cooler days this week. >> it wasn't too bad except for the humidity. >> the humidity was atrocious and it's going to get worse. temperatures will come close to but probably not hit 100 degrees this week. we are expecting some thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. nonetheless, we're still looking at a high temperature on sunday above 90 degrees. there it is. we have pictures here showing you what amounted to a very warm day. you can see a cloud or two drifting -- drifting over lake michigan. we had partly cloudy skies for much of the afternoon today. look to the south. nashville, 107 degrees. 105 in st. louis. atlanta, 106 degrees. in comparison at 92 today in chicago, very comfortable. but this warm air has ballooned north well into the dakotas perhaps even parts of southern canada and we're expecting this warm air is going to be around this entire seven 46 day period. now, look at this. the hottest air down in the desert southwest will try to make a run once again on the chicago area. notice the colors darkening as that area of extreme heat inches closer and closer. it doesn't look like it's going to come in quite like it did last week but we could still hit 100 degrees a couple of days but it doesn't seem quite as likely at the moment. look at the temperatures tonight. still in the 80's through most of the area. winds are not really a big factor at the moment. we're looking at relatively gentle breezes. they're coming from the south and southwest. wind speeds about five to 10 miles an hour. several stations reporting calm winds at the moment. radar, satellite composite, central illinois, rain and thunderstorms pushing through areas well to our south. that's associated with a frantal boundary that will come north tomorrow. we're thinking there's a good chance of seeing rain and thunderstorms, probably in the early afternoon hours, but they will be possible from time to time during the afternoon afternoon tomorrow. big thunderstorms through parts of the central plains, nebraska, elements of kansas and even south dakota. an upper air disturbance on the coast of texas in the gulf of mexico generating some big thunderstorms. extreme southern texas they're getting much-needed rainfall. this is the area encompassed by heat advisories and excessive heat warnings. how close to the chicago area?
