Once you gave your happy you did you have to help the fighters were fighting. A red t would description of the charges against Jacob Blake. So we have some challenges and I want to go to them John in Libertyville Illinois hello hi i don't want to challenge you on anything having to do with the charge if you don't. Want to. It's really understanding of what we perceive that when a suspect is walking away from police while they're telling going to stop that the appropriate course of action for police but you didn't step in time in the back or in rank that you know understanding that that really is you know it is not my understanding but you have completely distorted what happened so I don't know even know why you were asked the question it's not related to the Blake case the man was tasered throughout and you know that I do but you know what you do so can you wait wait wait what is this walking What is this walking away the man which taste twice he resisted arrest for the police the tasers did not I don't know why you said Ok so what I mean he wasn't walking away he was reaching down into his car now you may feel he was reaching down for a Subway sandwich but the police don't know if he's reaching for a Subway sandwich or a gun one of the supreme police are close to do there are women think that are not in evidence that. You know I am not I am not you know I don't know if you if you distort what you've already distorted the reality but if you distort what I say I'll say goodbye to you I asked you a question I asked you a question and I will answer any of yours Ok how did the police how would the police supposed to know what he was reaching for. I don't think they did know what he's reaching for so if I don't want a policeman my demand or my monarch or what I've gone. Very wrong or that the carnage. I think that I do I didn't follow your response either either I missed the word or I did I missed the point. I'm sorry to get Ok I don't know that they knew or anything by hunters that I mean do you know what law we go to get in the car and he wouldn't no no I thought I saw we have a different perception of the reality Ok let's say they shot him wait wait wait is 7 watch troubles you or any shooting. And it's just what happened when I don't know I'm asking you if you keep raising 7 if it had been wanting a bullet would you have called me. I think you don't think I would think that so they shouldn't have so they should never have shot a man resisting arrest reaching down for something in the car who had been taste twice and who had not been affected by the tasers they should have allowed him to bend into the car to reach for something is that correct I'm not going to argue with you I want to understand your position I don't think but what I do you and I disagree on this but what I did you know I don't need to shoot the guy that no I don't. Write you made your case and I made my case to have collateral. Think everybody knows I was reading about somebody who. Was a simulated being a policeman in a shooting range and realized. This is the ease with which people judge police actions. Do you realize that in virtually every single case of a quote unquote an armed black. That the the the person resisted physically resisted the police. That whether you're white or black. If you if you just do what the police ask 99.99 percent of the time nothing will happen today . Why is that not relevant. Why is this man's track record and being a being. Sought for arrest and being taste and fighting and then what if he had gone for a gun immediately turned around and shot one of the policeman. Nothing there would be no no nothing would have been known the story would not have been told policeman shop while trying to subdue fugitive to the extent that they would even be a headline. So the policeman now I think they are supposed to wait to be shot before they shoot. Ok. Bloomfield Hills Michigan Sarah Hello Sarah. I was going to create your welcome. Thank you so much for taking my call Thank you. Ever told your screener I had to laugh here to Michael Chertoff but I have been a member of my marriage 33 years ago and I think your comments would not want to be Ok with the political church. Mostly it started from an abortion issue that was raised couple of years back when it was almost post birth abortion was once a law. And. So we got into an e-mail exchange and. I wanted to not give 10 percent of my tithes to the diocese which was you had to do that at the time and. They were all about black lives matter and they didn't really represent my views and my values and so I told them in an e-mail that I was going to give 10 percent of my. Dues to Dennis Prager university and I do 5 minute videos for anyone willing to listen and he wrote me back and he said I don't know what to say. And I thought that was wonderful because for want he didn't have anything. Over the. That that did not make his day. Well you know if you think I would come through and because he really really tried to court me after that and we we did national him that I'm sure it was all for me and you know I was a very involved and I get the Select that I purpose because I wanted people I want to be able to say yeah you know nothing to be here next year and I wanted people to know what church you open the door to now. Well I don't little bit like Moses in the world and I have tried various churches I even went to a. Are what the Jews for Jesus now my mind is blank and Messianic Jews. We may be. In the long. Room and you. Want. To check people not. Ok this might help we have a retired police officer in Tampa. And that's Jose Hello Jose. First time caller thank you by the way how are you there thank you so when at what age does the average policeman retire. Well that. He did. In a 20 minute fire maybe even 14 years or. So does it relatively early so you have a whole life ahead of you to do whatever you want so to speak oh yeah and I want to I have to be grateful Yes well I'm grateful to you so go ahead I know you want to explain more with regard to the Blake shooting. So when we were on the cat I mean we were told the $21.00 role which was basically if there was a suspect what a knife. And you don't have your weapon drawn it was no way that you would be able to draw your weapon and and fire off around at the charge that you with the knife. Oh and Jonathan Billy Kane he will pay you Jacob Jacob like you no no I'm sorry Jacob Blake went back to him. So that could lead you to believe he was on some type of chemical stuff and right there reaching into that vehicle which now we know he had a knife in there and he had made it yet and I. Didn't have a gun drawn and we didn't we would be talking about something different. And you can be turned around and stab you know I've been there and we be talking about an officer who was seriously injured or killed well that's what I said I'm happy you've confirmed that as a thing and thank you for your service. Ability or the desire to read every. Interaction between the policeman and a black suspect. Resisting arrest he's twice they tried to not shoot him. But he could taste twice and nothing happened. Well Michael substance that that is the answer and so I just took blood for. That was money that was what I was just talking about. Let's go remove a former police officer in McHenry Illinois Steve hello Steve Dennis Prager. Ok thank you. Call your liberty you were talking simulators for training it's problem that's triggered by arm strength you know later it is twice here we would put our officers there is that. True that. We have begun. Yes You know it's going to err if the pager. Worked their way through. The program actually it may be going to. Kill or shot somebody that you so I think that's one of the. Police department a little it's been. You know. That would be a great idea that's why I mentioned somebody just did that and had a completely different view of police work realizing how a split 2nd decisions need to be made so often Thank you sir I would like I would I would like to see that simulator myself Actually I'll probably arrange that So listen to this all you folks aware of the hodge twins. Are you familiar with how twins Ok so they have a huge following and there are other brothers 2 black brothers. They are twins so listen to this Facebook has threatened to blacklist the page of conservative comedy duo Kevin Hodge and Keith better known as the hodge twins on the same day the New York Times identified them among the most successful conservative content creators on the platform the duel rose to fame on You Tube where they amassed 1400000 subscribers with viral videos in 2018 they set up a 2nd channel conservative twins focused on political content which is accumulated over a 1000000 subscribers their Facebook page is also enormously successful with over 5000000 800000 followers and over 3300000 likes. Earlier today this is to 2 days ago the New York Times published an article lamenting the success of conservative creators on Facebook with the hodge twins featured as a prominent example the New York Times complains this this is just amazing actually is reason for hope the New York Times complains anyway soon as I see the New York Times complains I get a good feeling that the 2 most popular posts about black lives matter on the platform that is on Facebook are videos from the hog through a critique of the movie. In other words that is incredible when you think about it the the most widely viewed black video any video but this is by blacks about b.l.m. Is anti b.l.m. . This is from The New York Times the most shared Facebook post containing the terms black lives batter over the past 6 months is a June video by the right wing commentators the hog's twins which calls the racial justice movement a damn lie racial justice. That the New York Times description of b.l.m. a Racial justice movement. Have pathetic morally pathetic. The 2nd most shared black lives matter post this is still from the New York Times a different viral video from the hodge twins the one calling the movement the left the sly the hodge twins also have the 4th 6th and 12th most shared post. So now there's if there's a threat to shut them down I don't know who's worse Facebook or Twitter and then there's You Tube and Google. And then they and by the way this is a very it's the left that work when you talk about all the professors and others removed from work because they said something that offended the left and the whole cancel culture they put cancel culture in quotes like the right wing made up the fact that there's a cancel culture so to sell in other words they cancel you and then mock you for saying you were canceled they create the riots and then blame it on Donald Trump this is the world of the left we can do all the evil we want but if you call out the evil we do your evil. That is this is a perfect example. That's right. I read to you from Timothy Egan That was a perfect example of the Da Yeah you go Joe Biden says Trump incitement led to the death of the Trump supporter in Portland. Ok everybody Guinness Prager here many of you are aware. For the record if you're not aware and 4 months ago what is this for so for from we're very basically September tomorrow so for so for from 9 is 5 I think it earlier than that even in May But very early on I said that I thought that the lockdown was the world's greatest mistake probably the world's greatest mistake not the greatest evil I distinguish between mistaken evil and I I mean I'm now certain that I was right and that the damage that is being done. And especially in California where a very small man with a with apparently unlimited power runs the state. The Remember folks before I get to my guests because I've been wanting to talk to them about this for a while. Do you remember I guess most of you wouldn't an article in The San Francisco Chronicle from I think 2 years ago. That the the new sims the wife and the husband or the who they don't who doesn't call or a wife calls a partner. The 1st partner. If he this couple told the press that they pick up their dog poop with a bag with Donald Trump's picture on their poop bag is a trump bag this is the the level of Gavin Newsome and his partner. But how could it be otherwise. In California if you're a Democrat you're elected you can be a fool you could be classless. You could be mean you can be corrupt it's irrelevant you're a Democrat. My heart has been breaking for the small businesses that Gavin Newsome alone along with Eric Garcetti have destroyed they don't seem to care I maybe they'll claim they care but it I don't judge people by emotions I judge people by behavior they don't care. So I have a friend who has who is one of the great chefs he is he was the chef to some of the biggest names in Hollywood but he always had a dream and that is to make the best pizza in the world or at least in America. And he started his own place in receipt of California which is sort of you know that there's no Santa list and you go over the mountain and then year and recede and a bunch of other little towns or cities if you will. Called Flame pizzeria the pizza is awesome and then. Then came the shutdown. So let me explain one thing before I talk to Richard Florida the chef and owner of Flynn pizzeria and find out and I don't know the answer I purposely didn't want to talk to him about this before I came on the radio. Listen to the logic you can eat with it but a mask because there's no way to eat with a mask on an airplane one inch from the person next to you correct. One foot from the person behind you one foot from the person in front of you that you can do in them enclosed cabin but you cannot eat with any distance in a restaurant if somebody will explain that to me then I will understand the logic in the meantime I do not the only logic I understand is United Airlines has a lot more clout than fling pizzeria. So Richard floors Jack let's get the story here you were allowed to open and correct for like 2 weeks. I don't I don't think it was quite 2 weeks but just about 2 weeks people come in barely because they're afraid I think because they don't know you know there's there's 2 different situations here you've got the rules of the restaurant that we get sent information via e-mail or something Spector stops by but customers don't know the rules so just because they change the rules one day and say you can be open at 65 percent capacity that the customers aren't notified of that so they've been used to a complete shutdown where they can only order to call well so a lot of people they don't run other routes were open right now do or die and I will be the amount of time that I was open be 2 weeks or whatever by the end of that 2nd week people would come in to pick up their their food and say oh you have out there I mean you're open again. All right I am speaking with a restaurant owner actually a major chef who live the dream of baking spectacular pizza and and it is perfect for pizza. So as the owner and chef of flame pizzeria received a California. I don't understand something Richard floors act. Why is there no uprising by restaurant owners nail salon owners hair salon owners and just about any retailer in California. I mean this is not a rhetorical question the you have an idea why Yeah because they're afraid. They're afraid the government has so much power I get a. Health Inspection supposed to be once a year I fear them coming in 4 months before that because if by Roth them in any way I learned very early on with the with the health inspectors do not ask them about the logic of any specific rule because they they look right through you and they've got this look on their face that that says to me Keep it up and I'll shut you down so that's why in my opinion that's why the business owners are afraid to speak up because they could lose their lives yes we see what happens with the the hair salon in Texas the woman wanted to stay there but we could imagine the came national news she did become national news. She's very communication among restaurant owners you have like that association I think for well there is a Restaurant Association but I think for individual owners we just work so such a long as we don't have time to to socialize on board even you know deal with other business owners. Will you remain in business could question here's the here's the answer I'm done. I'm done I'm finished I have the restaurant up for sale of I'm not going to know that we're about to put our home on the market actually it's a good ending to tell you the truth. We've put our house on the market my wife and I have zeroed in on this tiny little fishing village and called Murrells Inlet in South Carolina we're headed there the end of September to look at some homes and we're hoping to pull up stakes and and live with their conservative think. Well that's it folks if you could book a you hole you may have to reserve warm 2 months in advance right surely you're leaving California I could cry. I mean I know you so many years I did not know the . Why. Are you going to store something there but frankly if somebody wants to back me in a restaurant or offer me a private chef job we're on our way you know but it was it was the cold you know what I say I have to stop for a 2nd and I have to preface what I'm talking about by saying that I am very very grateful that I own a business that with allowed to stay open. There's thousands you know hundreds of thousands that have closed because they weren't able to stay open at all during the virus but that being said it was the virus that was the straw that broke the camel's back both the lock down are always correct yes the law and you're right it was the lockdown. You know the when they try to explain it on the news that you know restaurants can stay open but just to. To go orders it makes it sound so easy course but prior to the lockdown my take out business was less than 5 percent of my sales run so I had to switch over we had to retool the entire restaurant to make that work in the matter of a couple of days I mean it's like telling a car company tomorrow all of your cars have to be convertibles how difficult that would be it's sort of the same situation with the restaurant and then when they they allowed us to open at 60 percent for 2 weeks we had to retool it back the other way to adjust for how many do we guess we're going to get as far as to go orders in relation to dining in and very few people dined in so we had to make those calculations based on no information that we've ever had in the past on something like this I was in Illinois 2 weeks ago Democratic governor Democratic free democratic city of Chicago are you indoors and restaurants. In California is close to unique. In how irrational and trick only in its rules or are you aware of that yes it's it's hard for me as a business owner to keep up with all of the different minute changes I was telling you before that one senior We have a health inspection which you don't know one will happen no I have a an idea and of course I try to keep my restaurant as as clean as possible but just just to give you an example in the last 2 months the inspector has been in 3 times. To check that we're keeping up with this the standards and also to deliver the new rules and regulations for that given what turns out to be weak We've been there 3 times in 2 months. You have outdoor dining and the rest yes but that there's not I assume make up for the loss of ignored by me not even close . Because the the number of people coming or the just the space through you can accommodate the number of people coming you know and why is that just the want to get out in the heat I I really don't think that people Dollars mean if it's that this difficult for me as the business owner to know what the rules and regulations are how do those the general public know that any specific restaurant has outdoor dining room. So who's going to buy your restaurant I don't know but it's like I said it is up for sale. What I do have going for me is that over 6 years even though I have never paid myself a penny nor have I made a penny in profit we had nearly 600 reviews I had before point 5. Average rating on Yelp which is almost unheard of for restaurants Well there are a lot of the great chefs selling and I say. God bless you Richard Florida back that makes me angrier cap a new. High This is Dennis Prager the longer I live the more I realize that many people a lot of people really over 40 or 50 have aches and pains that can start affecting the way they live the way they sleep or get around you know what I'm talking about Pete and Seth Talbot the owners of relief factor created this 100 percent drug free supplement to help people like me wife and just about everybody I know with low back pain my wife with me pain to see if I'm 1995 investment 1000 dollars a 95 cent investment for their 3 week Quick Start can help lower or even to limit your pain like it has for Sue and me Pete and Seth do not make any guarantees of course but they do tell me that about 70 percent of those who order of the 3 weeks quickstart go on to order more which I think says a lot is $20.00 too much to see if we can get you out of pain to here's all you do go to relief factor dot com Relief factor dot com or call 805-838-4805 extension 8384. One of 5.5 w g c h n w g c h dot com anywhere me. That's where. Welcome to the Dennis Prager Show. This is August 31st the last day of August the last day of fund raising. August this fund raising month for prayer you sort of a tradition in my mind of any rapist and. By saying by speaking for some moments with the c.e.o. Of prayer you Merissa strike. I'm keeping our on hold because she's going to get embarrassed and you know that you might hear her. Go or something like that. Without Morris we really don't function. It's simple as that. That is how. Competent competent is those on the rise to the occasion but she's was sent by God to appreciate you and it's a delight to talk to you Marisa I know you've heard that. We're we're we're doing Ok I mean which you know I don't I'm I leveled with my audience if I tell them things are bad things are bad but if they're not bad I think people are are aware more than ever about Prager use central role in the film in this country is that overstated. The further out than I think you are a thing that and I think about me if you could see me right now I'm definitely blocking my thoughts and you know you're right I have actually really good news the fair today and I have lots of good news here today 1st of all. I want to let you know in the audience know that we are witnessing that the left has overplayed their hand and we're witnessing it because we're seeing so many young people particularly because they're home from school and they're getting on the Internet. And we've been able to get the millions of young while they're home. Surfing the internet bill we've got a humiliated over a 1000000 brand new fulfilled media war. I didn't know wow 850000 new the private that got more alone so the numbers are amazing and I just think it's encouraging because we're all seeing how far the left has gone and we're all asking ourselves when did big. When are they going to go so far that people are going to wake up and you know God willing this is the time and where we can be there pushing content that make them that and know that we are the power in the eye and they are a hit and they're you know we're hearing all the right thing though is that when Curry King I did not know that it is truly gives I I think you're right about overplaying their hand they might have even done it viz a viz the country not just kids and. I pray to God that that turns out to be right we have we have seen. A tremendous growth in people watching us and there's something to fight with I would love you to react to so major articles on Prager you in Mother Jones Buzz Feed front page Sunday New York Times front page Sunday l a times. And basically no one. Is that. I mean not only are there. Not affected in my opinion oftentimes it's flattery I mean the worst thing they can say about us is that we are going around the university and we are going around the media traditional media unable to reach young people directly and you know our response is Well of course that's exactly our mission so there echoing the fact that we were affected to me all these pieces are actually flattery. And obviously totally fine with that story right now with Facebook and Twitter. So the more effective we are the more concerned. With our work and we are seeing the are unbelievable censorship especially when it came to the issue of posting videos of doctor but really anything we post a lot of content about the exaggeration with regard to how to handle climate change we post videos on those batteries and we get punished every time we do so so it's very alarming to see what's happening on social media which is why we are so obsessed with getting people to subscribe to us even though we're constantly pushing. To grow our footprint on social media. That every person you know every person listening to immediately go to Prater you dot com and subscribe so that we can reach you directly and not only reach you via social media and also leave also subscribe to our free. Text You can go. Back breaker you weren't crazy are you for that number think or think when you were I would be around but Prager you think we really are oh so that we can reach directly what will happen if social media that that we are the rate that they have been there don't like up anymore we need to be able to build a large army at the point in Iraq. 64600 just say the word or type in prayer you write because this is all free and this is all everything we do is free by the way folks that's the reason we need to raise a lot of money and people are I have been responding because we are very calm and very reasoned everything that we put out is very classy. Orderly devoted to truth constantly footnoted and with great presenters look good look this week Heather MacDonald on fully on police brutality is and what it was a what is the data that the left says follow the science but don't trust anecdotes don't they say that don't trust anecdotes about hydroxy caloric when but that all their whole thing on police brutality is anecdotes. She's going to give the data not the anecdotes the data and that that's up this week by the way you mention climate change the one that they really attack was given by Richard Lindzen and the believing climatologist in the country as a general consensus from mit that's the guy they're attacking for not listening to the science and they're more of that you know the more of the or the a packet that my my recent conclusion that most of that video could be the one that you get a cock them out. By the way you will get a big kick out of this so during August almost every day I would devote a few minutes of talking to a member of Prager force we have 10000 high school and college students or age people and Prager force around the world I ask everyone one question that some point what's your favorite Prager you video Mariska I have never gotten the same answer twice. And that makes me feel great they all love something different. Yeah I mean everybody has and that's why it's so important that we continue to produce different types of content and different perspective I'll tell you right now I'm sitting on the floor at a brand new studio that we're building through moving offices. The Dennis Prager radio show audience will be the 1st to hear that we're moving to a new office on the Pember 11 and I'm sitting on the floor we're going to have 4 brand new office for brand new faces that are going to be completely dedicated to new productions and new shows our growth is incredible our demand for our growth is incredible and this is all thanks to I mean obviously Dennis is insulting to you but it's also all thanks to your audience they were always the 1st to support us so again every year I just want to show up again and thank the audience that believed in us and continuing to support us and work and we're going to continue to deliver we're going to continue to deliver new content that changes this lines and we're growing and it is a very very exciting time for praising you were doing amazing work and it's different such an honor such an honor to serve our country in the way today is the last day for the triple match those anybody is planning on giving This is a great opportunity to help us in a big way. Humorous So you while you are blessed you've got you've got a great husband 3 kids great friends and you do great work you have a rich life. Thank you Dennis thank you. The lock down is becoming a more crime. Front from the state crime. And it turns out from the c.b.c. Itself it turns out a lot of the cases may not a lot of the deaths I should say from Cove it may not have been because of coven. This is from n.b.c. . Table 3 not important to you but I'm reading through shows the types of health conditions and contributing clauses mentioned in conjunction with deaths involving covert 19. Are you ready I hope you're sitting. For 6 percent of the deaths. Effect 6 percent of the deaths attributed to covert 19 covert $1000.00 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to covert 19 there were 2 and a half additional conditions were causes of that in other words 94 percent of the people who are said to have died of cove it had 2 and a half other conditions. The fact that they also had COPD it may have meant little or nothing. You got it so you have a heart attack I'm cold it your covert death. You have lung cancer and Cove it your covert death. The c.d.c. Says people need to always social good Ok that's irrelevant the following are the top underlying medical conditions linked with covert 19 deaths influenza and the mono respiratory failure I pretense of disease diabetes vascular unspecified dementia cardiac arrest heart failure renal failure intentional and unintentional injury poisoning and other adverse events other medical conditions according to the c.d.c. 9000 want you to hear this because. He will find it almost unbelievable what are we up to in numbers almost 200180000. According to the c.b.c. 9683 people died in the United States with only having covert buying theme listed on their death certificate. This is the scandal of history that you are living through you've bought it because the media told you to buy it because you didn't believe me or you didn't hear me not just me I'm not alone believe me thank the Lord. I love this one intentional and unintentional injury. You fault you fall off your ladder. And as someone dear to me did die eventually. And as a result of it. But if you had Cove it it's listed as a covert that. You shoot yourself and you have covert it's a covert death. You know it was a crane falls on you and you had covert it's a cope with that. 9683 people in America died just of covert. We should never have had a lockdown ladies and gentlemen maybe they should have had one in New York City at for a couple of weeks or a few weeks that was it maybe they should have had one. In Rome or wherever they were hit in Italy for a few weeks. The disaster. But I thought I mention the museums issue. California Museum Association has announced that about a 3rd of the museums of California will probably close them permanently. Why is that why can't you go to a museum. Because Gavin Newsome he truly stupid man with unlimited power is the tell you can tell you to do that I don't understand why he has this power it is very scary if you love liberty. State of California as a wasteland was the great state of the country until the left. Took over. It was a guy calling in about Seattle he gave up I want to take his call. The only here is proof about what we just talking about Frazier Michigan Michael hello. I didn't want to be an older brother a lot of the way. Small business Barbara but shut down right now and on for sure I didn't call and report about it universe. Because it was so perforated and we were in the recovery room he didn't go wrong and go on until we got his son got the best certificate back and it said that he died a cold. And what was his dominant condition what was it again what cancer. Yet he had something in it called I don't. You know all right that's right yeah you're giving an example of exactly what I just wrote the people it's my think your call I thank you for. That and that is exactly correct. So anyway Bill and Sam Piedra why I did what you wanted and any amounts the reformulating over the covert if that is correct there's a lot more. In that regard not just about the deaths but about the positives. There were there were a very weak indicators of coded often and get your cold. Positive The testing apparently is not quite as. Sophisticated as as we would like. But wasteland of Seattle also run by the left. Seattle Seahawks n.f.l. Team. And some to the statement by. By Pete Carroll and he's the coach of the Seattle Seahawks. This is about racism in America that white people don't know Carroll said in a press conference they don't know enough. And they need to be coached up and they need to be educated about what the heck is going on in this world black people can't scream anymore they can't March anymore or they can bare their souls anymore to what they've lived with for hundreds of years. White guys came over from Europe they had a great idea about freedom and equality that's not what happened because we went down this other road here follow the economics and rich white guys making money and they put together a system of slavery. And we've never left that really it's never gone away. The coach of the Seattle Seahawks. And other fools. And I mean tone of it. I mean let me mail because he's another arrogant fool. And people I beg people not to go to Spurs games well before Kobe. The man's contempt for America and for the fans. Why do why it is so amazing the band knows football and then we're supposed to take his thoughts on non football seriously doubt by the way that doesn't mean you can't have serious thoughts it's very possible for a coach in the n.f.l. To actually have depth. But you have to earn a reputation for depth that's the thing here and a reputation for football I've earned a reputation for that's why I've been on for 35 years people may hate what I say but a lot of people find it illuminating nobody finds Pete Carroll's thoughts illuminating . Well. It's quite quite something. Anyway Roger Goodell gave him the green light. He had don't wish the n.f.l. Success to be honest nor the n.b.a. . Major League Baseball has had to be a Major League Baseball example. No I have a love of football example. I had I had one from the Tampa Bay Rays as a disgusting statement from a city I really love feel for you folks and Tempa Bay having. A baseball team run by people who loathe America and loathe you let's get that statement up would you the Tampa Bay Rays are really me. With the last month this is from the bowl of the world more Ravens. After the shooting of Jacob Blake which I read to you about in the 1st hour. Jacob Blake was face twice Jacob Blake was reaching for something in the car Jacob like a fall off the police the 2 tasing did not do anything to him. With yet another example of racial discrimination with the shooting of Jacob Blake how do they know it's racial discrimination is it possible to to shoot a black suspect and not be a racial discrimination issue. This is the Baltimore Ravens and the other lawful abuse of peaceful protesters where it's not happening one unlawful abuse of police protest of peaceful protesters not a word from the Baltimore Ravens on the riots presumably or the amount of crime in Baltimore. We must unify as a society is not a joke these people the left this unites the society and then calls for unity. It is imperative that all people regardless of race religion creed or belief come together to say enough is enough I do say I'm say enough is enough of the bull about the left they were united they say it about those who defend America enough is enough no more of you defenders of America. Continued from the Baltimore Ravens this is bigger than sports racism racism is embedded in the fabric of our nation's foundation and as a blemish on our country's history if we are to change course and make our world a better place we must face the problem at on an act now to enact positive change. Can the Baltimore Ravens name any society in the world that did not have slavery. I mean black society any indigenous society any Muslim society. So every country in the world has blots on its record. Right so we're all a for all blotted them and we're not that bloody right. Because all of this is in comparison to other countries. And the way the Baltimore Ravens' of. Another center of moral form in America. Fear and pain. Yup a summer of similar analysis was done here in Florida. About 2 weeks ago and they determined that there are 171 people under the age of 65 that in the state of Florida without a. 100 and some one and for that day in the state and you go on well in the state of Florida there are 17200000 people right under the age of 65 about one in 100000 we have that sounds about right you know. America has been ruined by the. By the lock down by the dishonesty company and the lockdown by the ease with which Americans have been frightened into utterly irrational behavior. It's not it's not if it wouldn't have happened in the past the weakening of the American soul and character is. Perfectly summarized by the acceptance of Californians. Of the little man. With unlimited power that they have granted him as governor of the state of California. As the little guy is crushed I had on a man whose dream was to create the best pizza place. And he certainly did one of the greatest He was chef to some of the biggest names of the Hollywood left to create his own pizza place in receive a California. Going to catch it before it looks leaves fling pizzeria a receipt Oh. It's up with that it's pretty good dot com and he's leaving he's it's over he's selling his business Gavin Newsome ruined his livelihood as millions of others. I mentioned to you the museums saying the museums in that are all liberal not leftist I'm sure 99 percent of them. They will put $2.00 and $2.00 together will the elect another Democrat all these people to run museums watching the spectacularly irrational laws from new sim. Crush their museums and they'll vote Democrat. That's what you call a true believer it's like the people that Stalin the communists who Stalin sent to prison where they were tortured you know what they almost to a man thought if only Comrade Stalin knew what they were doing to me. They never put $2.00 and $2.00 together the Democrats are leftists the left ruins everything it touches for museums the pizzerias. Elementary school high school college. A lot of you don't put 2 and 2 together you will continue to send your kids to school to learn that America is crap. And then you will be shocked one day when your kid rejects you because you actually admire the place. Because it's very hard to take your kid out of school I understand that totally I'm a parent. However if my choice is that my child will learn morally perverse things. Be ruined as a human by leftists teaching leftism or homeschooling or a school that doesn't teach that well off though there's no question. It's more convenient to send your kid off to school big time convenient guy you know. Home schooling does not mean that you can't go to work or that you can't do things I mean it's obviously not the same as sending your kid to a leftist daycare center called the school. However you have to make this decision . You read about the kids experience going to college and the college has the audacity of these these scared colleges Harvard was the 1st to shut them was so perfect it was perfect the most they leave college in the country with the most scared and the most irrational. So we'd never shut down the schools at least not the only age of 16 they did. Not want not one kid died in Sweden if you look at Sweden which never closed down. And Cleveland Cleveland Sweden has the I think the 8th. Most the per 1000000 deaths but if you look at it and it was overwhelmingly in nursing homes if you look at it. Well I. Think that that is that you cannot remember. Something. And from everything going to. Make a game it makes a little. Bit. Amazing you have been using everything here the broadcast day. Oh let me remind you if it's something very special it's almost eerie that it worked out this way for 13 years I have been conducting. The Jewish High Holy Day services are coming up in September as they were every year the new year and that they have been told that Russia showing them care for I started my own service 13 years ago because of 2 major reasons. I was born in both services even though I know the Hebrew service by heart. Just it was just it didn't do much for me. There would be moments that 2nd I want to. I want to completely non political service. And too many services tributes from Christianity or politicized by the priest minister rabbi. So $3.00 to $400.00 people would come each year and it was a magnificent service the music is breaking If ACIM. And I explained everything that goes on a lot of young people came down Jews came so I finally said to myself you know I've really got it down to something beautiful. I'm good I want to have a record of what I've done. And I think I got one of the leading videographer and photographers in Southern California where there are so many and he's one of the leading robber bolter not Robert Holt Robert Anton I'm sorry Robert Oulds or is the love of Double cool scholars that will. You'll be inspired he won't believe what you're watching so send me an email and I'll tell you where to go to just to sign up to see it. And. It's a no brainer that a Jew would want it and to get their kids to see it because most kids are alienated from religion but non jews 20 or 50000 people want to buy Passover Seder. So the kind of idea of a meaningful service could mean to people of any religion or no religion so send me an email and get your information. Thanks for. Welcome back you're listening to the way home with Morris Miss Laura welcome back and I am very excited I've been waiting actually weeks for this interview but now is the time and actually I can't think of a better time for someone's book to come out which happened in February of this year right before the pandemic hit and if there was every time that we needed some inspiration and something wonderful to kind of entertain us and also inspire us that was the time for relentless unleashing a life of purpose grit and faith to come out by none other than John Tash well for the past 45 years you know the John Tesh has been internationally recognized as a journalist a composer broadcaster and concert pianist his intelligence for your life radio show currently airs on 350 stations and reaches 14. 1000000 people a week I have always admired his show and Ben often on stations where his his program came on right after me really an incredible highly successful and very courageous path that includes 6 years as a correspondent for c.b.s. News and a 10 year run as an anchor on Entertainment Tonight where so many people remember him from not to mention his unbelievable musical accomplishments as a composer for Barcelona in Atlantic a limp became and his Also his seminal Live at Red Rocks which have raised millions for public television John and his wife Conny Seleka who I've also admired over the years they both live in Los Angeles but I him so grateful sorry for the long introduction your life is just so incredible John thank you so much for being here today on the way home it's like somebody has a.d.d. Life right where you watch he decided what the heck he wants to do as my dad used to always say your book you can pick it up at any chapter either in order out of order and each one is this unbelievable story in it's own it reads almost like a movie and also like a manifesto of motivation I just found it absolutely incredibly entertaining beautiful inspiring I was on the edge of my seat I was in tears part of the time it is such a beautiful beautiful book Relentless unleashing a life of purpose grit and faith and all of that is in there purpose grit and faith your whole life is a testament to that from your early stories in your childhood right up until now and overcoming cancer and so much that you've accomplished in your career as well John I don't even know where to start to ask you about what this book means to you why you wrote it now and what you have to share with us in this short 20 minutes you know I mean it wasn't it really wasn't my idea I have a friend who is sort of a part time manager of mine my Calkins out of Nashville and and when he was she. Carrying with him my journey my cancer journey which began in 2015 and it was a journey that was not only was my cancer was healed not only by science and by by professionals I mean you know surgeons and on college just but but also there's a there's a big part of the story that a spiritual healing which is quite amazing when you when you think about what the promises are for us for healing in that in the Bible what you're what your brain can do when connected to faith filled words and so he was like You gotta write about this I am not going to write about cancer I've addressed it I've got to things I'm doing a lot of put in my rearview mirror and then he set up a call with Harper Collins and they said well do you have any other stories about your life and I said I don't know you know I did this I did that and they said what would you write out about why and so I wrote out an ally and when I got to the part where I was homeless and 19 and a half years old living in a tent being kicked out of school and kicked out of my parents' house and then 3 years later literally 35 months later I was anchoring the news at w. C.b.s. In the same building as Walter Cronkite their life was so. You know I think everybody has this craziness in their in their life and certainly this is a time right now where you know in lockdown at a lockdown ever there where everybody is sort of it's and I just catch a moment right where did you drew this great picture of your life and then some 2 year old came along and shook the thing and there's no no there's no image on there anymore and and so I think looking back when you you know when you when you journal and for me this was a you know what was it in 80100000 words Journal when you journal and you look back on your life you start you start seeing that connecting the dots where you start seeing why why did I do this and why did I do that and when I worked this process things worked great for me and work through the process I almost ended up in jail you know so it was talked about cathartic and I had hired like him that most people that most people a lot of people hire ghost writers because you're too busy doing live in your life . I tried for a couple of months and it just wasn't in my voice and he was great but I realized I needed to go through the process and so 6 months was what they predicted for the book and it took me 2 and a half years they were really happy about that but you know what John so worth it because it reads so personal and you know you can tell it's your voice and it's so raw and so accountable like you hold yourself to such accountability throughout it but you also have this incredible transparency about every single detail of what you went through some of it like I said in the beginning almost reads like a movie like did that really happen especially seeing your unbelievable success your prodigy of sorts starting as a little boy you know on you know learning everything you could about what it whether it was electronics or anything you were trying to do you're always trying to learn and then you see you're very correct and it's across such a spectrum and you've hit the top of success in all of them and yet you are a kid kind of in the fifty's I'm I'm interested you grew up in Garden City I went to college at Adelphi University which is a little town and. It's a beautiful place but your upbringing was so interesting with your father being the Marine and the kind of tough tough guy that he was which made you who you were you're just such a an interesting fabric of so many different things that make up your wonderful story whether it's faith and True Grit your militancy. You know your love for your mother and yet your your your your deep faith and spirituality and and probably using the Law of Attraction in trying to envision better things for your life a lot earlier than most people were doing it so I just find it an incredibly inspiring tale but one that was truly honest and I'm grateful that you you know for forwent foregone you know. Forego the ghostwriter to be able to you know just really speak your own truth and your own language because this book I think is going to change lives and I'm sure it has already it's just really that inspiring but by the way thank you very much I've been caught in the Ford go for when I think for one thing is if it's not worth it we're going to make it a war because people you know we know what it is that was very nice of you and I appreciate it and and you know I love memoirs I read memoirs like crazy and when I landed this is so odd when I landed on Stephen King's memoir and I mean this is a guy who just writes for 5 hours a day but he wrote is 2008 he wrote his memoir called on writing because everybody wanted him to write a little book about about how to how to write and so he wrote a book about his life he wrote his memoir in his own voice and in that sort of Stephen King style and it was like Wow I totally get this now because it's because when you're writing even if you're writing in a journal that was the biggest the biggest problem I mean if I could give advice to everybody is Don't think yourself and I still catch myself doing is something that was anybody like this at me like I say is going to like what I'm doing and you just have to create you know create something out of your out of your heart and when I got that message about this book and it did it came from people like Bruce Springsteen and Stephen King who were like just go you know just do it and don't worry about it later you know worry about the editing stuff later that's when I realized the value of a memoir is and I've seen this for myself and reading others is that you will no matter whose it is whether it's Alexander Hamilton or or. Franklin you'll you'll see part of yourself in this and that's why and when you talk about growing up in 1960 s. There are a lot of people today who don't understand what that what their life was like especially now where you know we're looking at. Horribly you. Opposing sides you know with people who are with people's beliefs that are totally polarized people acting out those beliefs frightening but a lot of it is not turning out great and when you look back at the at the simpler time right and I hate to be this guy this sort of angry old guy but when you get when you look back at that simpler time where in 1952 right and so you you had a television maybe and you maybe have had aluminum siding on your house but you sat around the radio for the most part and then and then when the when you did have television it was black and white and Cronkite was on there and it went off at midnight you know and it's and you had there's no answering machines right and you went home was a kid you went home in the street lights came on you know and so that for me I was I was horribly unpopular when I was I was way too thin and I was 6 I was 6 foot 5 in junior high and I talk about this in the book right now wait I want to 25 now and I look sort of normal but back then I was 155 and so nobody would talk to me and so I ended up in my basement you know making stuff and you know Lynn and well Miranda who created Hamilton he's a he's a friend of ours and he talks about that about being alone and doing deep work and making stuff and I think that maybe this will be an encouragement to people there was a 2nd one I just stop reacting to all the doom scrolling reacting to all the crap that's out there right now and and find out where my heart is and and start creating out of that out of the abundance of a man's heart and so I think that. That is the message certainly the I got when I got a terminal cancer diagnosis and I thought I only have 18 months to live when I got to the other side of that is like I started to look at the the end date the normal end date of my life you know eighty's ninety's whatever it's going to be and I understand that I really need to it's all the stuff I tried really needed to find myself. Well John I am. I find it amazing I think so much of your life has been I guess what you would say dichotomous in the sense that you would have this really unusually difficult situation like being kicked out it you're out of your house literally with nothing no money no no nothing and your father doing that and living in a tent homeless in a park to you know working your way into a radio station and then you know having a vision to one but they be Walter Cronkite and then certainly you find yourself there you find yourself with cancer but not just with like you know stage one maybe you know if you just watched your lifestyle maybe you can kind of kick this thing you you discovered cancer but it was you know a really terrible case of cancer and yet you come out on the other side. Basically healed a lot of in Explain it inexplicable successes is what you call it and what do you mean by that and how did you get up whether it was in the 10 to into the newsroom at c.b.s. Or whether it was on your deathbed basically or it with you know terrible cancer to where you are today and producing and writing and completely healthy again what do you attribute to being able to do that 180 that full spectrum Turner you know I think it's yeah it might be it might be a surprise the answer but it's it's basically I'm sure I Don't ruminate about it every night. And I try every day to renew my mind so I'm not changed by the specter of cancer as well it's a process that I go through but I am chased by the fear of being back in that tense now it's a subconscious fear and it's what it's what propels me forward and so when my dad every you know what I want to tell the story on stage about what happened was you know for people who haven't read the book and I'm honored that you read the book is. I was my dad put me into textile chemistry he worked for Haynes. Underwear and he decided that even though I grew up as a musician and a performer that's what I wanted to do with my life you know you World War 2 veteran you know hero is off the coast of Okinawa stationed there you know and barely made it out alive and and his whole thing was he wanted a future for his son it isn't think his son should be an entertainer and so he enrolled me in North Carolina State University in textile chemistry and I lasted about 5 or 6 semesters and and I was always in the in the practice room practicing piano and hanging out with with all the theater kids and and so ultimately I decided I had to get out of that after I took a television radio course and got bit by the the bug media and I couldn't get one of my professors to sign my drop and card to get me out of there and so I just made the decision a fateful decision to sign his card to forge his signature to that card and I got caught and there's the university charged me with with breaking the honor code they gave me an f. In the course and they suspended me indefinitely until I could appeal you know after a year and you know year when you're 1819 years old is a long time and so my dad got a letter and it was that it was he it shamed him it changed the family have changed my mom's bridge club according to him but seeing the underwear division of Aids went through the whole list and he just said you're no longer welcome you know you're you're a cheat you no longer welcome in my house and so I had an old Volkswagen the same Jimi Hendrix records in a pub 10 and I drove back to the university area because that's all I knew and pitched a tent in a park and work construction and pump gas to college s. So it was as back then you know and when the sun came up I woke up and somewhere down I you know I went to sleep and I pitched my tent next to a payphone just in case my mommy called which she wasn't allowed to call me either and but there was there I realized like there was that I just had 2 choices I could become a I could become a vagrant or a drunk. Or I could try and get my way out of there and I could see my future because I was I was picked the Not that there's anything wrong with people working construction I love these guys but a lot of them weren't happy and they are a lot of them are very uncomfortable the 19 year old from the from Long Island with a New York accent all of a sudden on their on their chain gang of you know breaking breaking concrete and being able to see it was it was like It's a Wonderful Life right when you're able to see see yourself see your future and that was not the future that I that I thought I had manifested in my life and so I realized that I had to do anything I could to get a job in radio and that's when I broke into the campus radio station since I was already a criminal and I made a demo tape with my body I made the helicopter sounds on my on my chest you know and I think I held my nose to apart from this is that Maurice good thing at Cairo today about the head because I did this is Dr Henry Kissinger today you know and I made a reel to reel tape and there was a guy who I still stay in touch with a woman who felt sorry for me gave me my 1st job in radio and I was as my dad as somebody from a 950 s. Would say I was a blind dog in a meat house and there was no stopping me from that moment when he left me yeah. But you are absolutely a renaissance man in my opinion you have so many diverse gifts and talents and you've somehow incorporated them into your life and done something with almost all of them I mean even music where you are on t.v. You walk away from you know this incredible gig with big money and you decide you want to do music and and you don't just do it yeah end up becoming you know Grammy award winning and selling millions and millions of copies and doing a a television special of all things on t.v. I remember that so well I just I love how throughout the entire book you've got beautiful quotes different sayings a lot of them Scripture Bible verses I'm assuming. That a lot of that was ingrained in you and your life growing up but then also we hear relationship with your wife Conny Celica faith is plays a big part in in helping you to succeed and overcome and heal and the rest of it. Yeah yeah and you know it's when you what I wrote the book and I was looking back in about halfway through the book I was just breaking down into tears and especially writing about all the cancer stuff and everything and realizing the things that happened like getting another chance after standing my wife and you must have been shaking your head at this the chapter where I stand Conny up on her 1st day because I chickened out and then I have to fight my way back in you know I mean it gives me chills to think about it now having been married for nearly 29 years and my grandkids are in the pool behind me right now. You know it's it is one of those things where when I look back I realize that when I put the pieces together and reassembled the puzzle of my life that the only way for any of that to happen was out of the books of the book of Acts in the Bible which is which is the Holy Spirit will show you things to come you know the should the Holy Spirit will you know will protect you when the power will come upon you when the Holy Spirit arrives you know and and even though the only prayer was praying was the Lord's Prayer you know back and back in the day it was keeping me connected to God and and I mean in the the just just moving forward one foot after another even even. I mean there are there are places though in the book where you see that especially that I didn't want to the last chapter that I wrote in the book as it is sort of in the middle of the book but I did it was embarrassing for me to write this chapter and when you say transparent this is probably the most transparent I've ever been and it was it's a chapter called pity party and I'm actually sitting in the place right now we're at war that we're that chapter was hatched and it basically I I became a cancer patient I felt I caved in on myself and felt sorry for myself and I was drinking scotch whiskey every night and chasing it with Viking because when you're a when you're a cancer patient and you're sick and you're in pain you can get anything you want and be any little whispering around you and and my wife is not she she does she does not. She just does not abide in. That she she would not brook that as we say she was one of those people who was like no no no what you have to put this back together and and I almost didn't make it out of that and that's that's for me that's that was the grace of God Oh my goodness and there are so many instances like that throughout this wonderful wonderful book it's called Relentless unleashing a life of purpose great and faith it gives me goosebumps to even say the title because it's that wonderful and transformative please go out and get it John Tash I would say you are a national treasure and we are so grateful you're still here you're healed and you and your beautiful wife are enjoying your grandchildren thank you for writing this book thank you for all the beauty and are you put out into the world over the years we love you thank you thank you so much this is the way home with Laura Smith We'll be right back. Welcome back you're listening to the way home with Laura Smith Laura and important conversation to have right now it's really interesting but just literally 2 days ago I was watching a Hallmark movie of all things and the main theme of it was about this young woman who needed an organ transplant Well of course being a Hallmark movie she found her match in the perfect guy and got both a husband and a new organ with with the end of the movie but we want to you know make sure that these type of happy happy endings are available to everyone and so I'm very grateful to have today Dr denay Simpson she's the assistant professor of surgery in the division of organ transplantation at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and Dr Sampson thank you so much for coming on today to talk about something as important as organ donor ship. Thank you for having me. So just get us started in terms of what the focus is on today because I for 1 am an organ donor I have it on my driver's license and I feel very strongly that that's something that I wanted to do but there's so much more just being an organ donor and the circumstances surrounding it most of the donors I would imagine are the donations that have been are with people who have already passed away but there are other options available tell us all about your expertise in this area. Absolutely So yes if you mention there are sensually 2 different categories of being an organ donor there is a deceased donor which is what would happen you know for those of us who have checked that box on our card. Or our license rather if if we were to pass away suddenly then we would have the option to be a potential organ donor. But there's also a living donation as well. So living donation is an excellent way to increase the organ pool and the reason why I say that is because we don't have enough organs to go around so unfortunately there are going to be several people this year who don't have that happy ending that you saw in the movie yesterday. So in order to help more to achieve that we have to be creative in how you know we increase the pool of potential organs to be transplanted and living donation is is one way to do that. With hers and kidneys are the 2 organs that can that are suitable for living donation so we have 2 kidneys and so a donor can donate one of those kidneys as long as they're in good health their kidneys are in good health. And then the liver has a very unique ability to regenerate which is really quite remarkable so have the liver the liver can be divided in half of that can go to a patient and that half of the liver will regenerate with time and over a period of 6 weeks about will will be about the size of the normal livers that is really remarkable and then likewise the half that is left with the donor will also regenerate and grow. It's really a remarkable opportunity to help people who are otherwise on the list to get transplanted I see well in addition to being an assistant professor of surgery in the division of organ transplantation at Northwestern 5. Feinberg School of Medicine you're also the founding director of the Northwestern medicine African-American transplant access row Graham that's a different focus. Or is it not is it the same as all but why why do you have also this focus on. African-Americans as well is there is there are different circumstances. There are. So you know I'm a transplant surgeon one 3rd of all but there are some disparities when it comes to access to transplantation and the African-American community is that if they can if they can disadvantage if you are to look in the medical literature there is a lot of research on disparities and we find that African-Americans despite representing a large number of the patients who actually have the diseases that would benefit from transplants such as kidney disease African-Americans are 4 times more likely to develop kidney disease than white Americans so despite that is the burden African-Americans are less likely to benefit from transplantation so they're less likely to be referred to kidney specialist or liver specialist they're less likely to be referred to transplant centers to explore the option of transplant they're less likely to make it on the list and so those are real problems and there are several reasons for those those disparities these are not simple solutions. To fix their multi-factorial issues but the program is designed to fight these disparities in whatever way we can so mingling we are focused on education and. Making resources available to communities that are in need and that risk we like to you know work with the community to help them be empowered to to you know advocate for themselves and to seek out these resources and to just know that transplant is an option for them particularly in the setting of kidney disease a lot of patients think that dialysis is the last stop and it doesn't have to be and transplant offers a survival benefit over. Diallo you know a patient was on dialysis if they were to be transplanted we would expect that they would with longer with the transplant than they would if they were to go it's really about education and poor group. And how successful is the option of just asking people that you know in love in your community in your family and seeing whether people are willing to be tested to see that they would be a match for a particular person so in other words an African-American or anybody for that matter needs an organ they get put on a list that's I'm sure isn't at a national database but what about just seeking out amongst your own family or your own friends for something like that or is there a great opportunity there. You know there is it's interesting as you know there are a few things that I would say about about this one is that there are so many. Misconceptions and men around living donation and so that becomes a major barrier to 2 people finding living donors that that's the case for everybody but particularly for minority communities. These these myths tend to be very prevalent there as distrust of the medical community and so that compounds it and so finding a living donor for these communities is often really hindered by this than and not surprisingly then after hearing all of that African-Americans are less likely to benefit from living donation but that's something that can be changed as you would probably imagine you know asking them to be an organ donor is not the same as that being someone to spot you 5 bucks it's a big deal conversation it can be challenging to navigate. Northwestern medicine we have programs in place to help patients of any ethnicity and any background to navigate these difficult conversations and. You know to essentially help them to either have the conversation or to appoint someone to have that conversation on their behalf someone that we would call a donor champion who will use whatever means they have it could be social media could be other networks like say in the church to help find a donor for that patient and part of it is education because a lot of patients come to us thinking that they can only have donors from within their family or that donors have to be the same gender or they have to be the same race and none of that is true actually a donor can be a perfect stranger and as long as they have blood match then the per procedure can move forward so a lot of it is education but once that education happens there is there is tremendous success around living donation. That's wonderful to know and how many surgeries would you say organ transplants happen per year at Northwestern Memorial Hospital how many are performed you know your question is very transplant center and so on average people form about 400 transplant the year I have a liver and kidney transplant surgeon but in addition to liver thing kidney Northwestern also perform concrete transplant part in the long trip but it. That's incredible and for just in general if someone does donate one of these organs and they're alive to do so what is the recovery period. So let's talk about in terms of the different organs for a kidney I think you know we've come a long way in terms of kidney donation you know years ago it was a really big stage and there'd be a lot of post-operative pain no longer. Nowadays we do it minimally invasive leave the laparoscopic approach. The patient comes out with mesh smaller stars and they have obviously still have to have a scar big enough to get the kidney out but aside from that the stars are very small and patients leave within 24 hours so donors leave within 24 hours so it's a very sort of the Sion donors do very very well when we see them for their 1st ball of visit if you didn't see their scar you would have never know that they were gone or they usually look fantastic they're out and about walking you know certainly there is some fatigue that comes with the energy that spent with healing and so usually in the 1st couple weeks patients will describe that to us but you know within that you know 2 to 3 weeks patients are back to work if they are at a very sort of light duty job patients who have a more active work you know such as lifting heavy obstacle stuff will restrict them for a couple weeks beyond that just so we can be sure that they fully heal before they engage in those activities but overall the recover the recovery period is very sure and it's a procedure that's very well tolerated the liver side the incision a little bit bigger the recovery a little bit longer but not significantly so and the patients you know do very well from that as well really incredible and it's something that's just so important but it seems like if there was ever a good time to be considered as an organ donor now's the time with all of the technology advancements and everything in surgery and and medicine Dr Simpson tell us how we can find more about our listeners I'm sure are going to be interested in learning more about this what's a good place to send them to. I think a great way to get information and even sign up to be an organ donor if listeners are not one already Donate Life dot net. A comprehensive website has a lot of information about. Being an organ donor and. Frequently have questions that the felt a lot of the misconceptions tend to circulate around organ donation and then I think that if donors are still and quiet or if people are so inclined to become a donor they can sign up there as well Ok the Web site one more time Donate Life dot net You said donate like. Wonderful doctors in a sense Simpson the assistant professor of surgery in the division of organ transplantation at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine as well as the founding director of the Northwestern medicine African-American transplant Access Program thank you so much for this really important conversation today Dr Simpson all the best thank you so much for having me really appreciate it. This is no way home with Laura Smith I'm Laura and I'm very grateful to be joined today by someone who has a lot of influence on and a lot of well great transformation work going on with the young child and the young children so that you know right now there's a lot of talk about whether our kids are going to be going back to college how is that going to be handled whether they're going back to their regular public schools and obviously it's different everywhere in the country but we don't often hear as much about the younger set the littles the preschoolers and how to handle that during a pandemic whether or not they are going back to school my guest is John Leslie Stewart she's the founder and director of Perry School and think tank which is actually a unique learning system and I bet you have a lot of information then for us I can't even imagine what it would be like to have a preschooler right now that you were already does send send off on their their 1st little experience in education and then having them potentially have to be home instead tell police tell us everything that's going on with that and what your your grade system think tank is doing for these kids oh my goodness For us it's been an ever changing should we thought everyone was coming back at all but it's just every day is a different story so thank you for having me we right now are on the verge of starting a fall and learning that family if not all will be going we just actually had a parent meeting and it looks like that's the direction it's going in of course we want our kids back but the health is that the forefront and of course the whole idea of the question of learning what preschool has been a big one for families and this is where when we went into the lockout we were actually already pivoted at a good position to bring a think tank program because it's something that we had to get away that 2008 and we had already been preparing to put this thing be on that the walls of Perry School. When the lockdown happened so we were able to pivot very very quickly and seamlessly into the online version and have success for Perry school and all the family I'd love to hear just a little bit about the underlying philosophy behind Perry School and then also think tank how does it work sure will carry school has been in the West Village for 20 years and we've been developing the programs here it's a progressive preschool that is very nurturing touches on the arts of course with a big arts program here and it also delves into academics we have a unique program to carry school called thing which is an academic program for preschoolers that instills the joy of learning well and when you say preschoolers are you talking 3 and 4 year olds or even younger even younger we actually do toddler through 5 wow now I I'm just trying to imagine myself with a 2 or 3 or 4 year old and trying to get them to engage with some type of online learning in the academic realm of things how do you do it. Good question Well one of the things that we came up with was 1st of all small class sizes we do 7 or less with 2 teachers that is vital to success in addition to that we have a very fast paced dynamic delivery that keeps the kids engaged and we have a lot of different materials that we use and colors and shapes and animals and whatnot to keep the children engage the entire time we also did something that really kicked this thing forward which was we did one on one coaching with the children and having that one on one setting with the child and the teacher really made a true Jeff and from a child for example that wasn't speaking online or engaging with us online to raising their had to get involved so we really saw a difference with that we also did something interesting which was called parent or caregiver coaching under the circumstances where we had parents all over the place at home alone at grandma's house family friend babysitter nanny whatever may be we decided to roll up our sleeves and dive right in and help who was there and that really made a huge difference in the success of the program I find this absolutely fascinating and I'm thinking you know how large of a part socialization place to little kids you know when they do go to preschool about seeing other faces and being able to touch and hug their little friends and things like that how do you how do you sort of introduce the social aspect into online learning one on one online learning sure sure well as an early childhood educator I just want everybody you know of course. It's so important for socialization during the early childhood years and there's absolutely no way that remote learning could replace in person learning however what we noticed at the school during the lockdown is that the children that stayed engaged with the online program began to thrive in addition to that they started creating this thing called Zoom playdates after school so after their online program they would be at each other's homes and play games like hide and seek and find each other in each other's homes which was absolutely precious and they would definitely say I've missed you I missed you so I would recommend to parent to stay connected to an online program to zoom playdates have a birthday party embrace it work around this thing keep your child engaged socially and academically because we are going back in person we noticed that there were children that drifted off the parents decided to just pack it in and they got very just connected I can I'm I'm very concerned what's going to happen to those children coming back whether it's in September whether it's in January or going forward how they're going to make it back and just all in a seamless way I think there's going to be some challenges with that it sounds like you have so many resources like you said you started think tank in 2008 you had all these years to sort of prepare for now not knowing that that was actually going to be happening in 2020 but and you originally did it for the Perry School where you which you founded but now you're making it available to everyone how did they find you they can find w w w p e r r y s c h l o l That's Perry School dot com. Oh easy enough Parry school dot com wonderful thank you so much Don Leslie Stewart founder and director of Perry School and think tank and a way to get your preschoolers engaged and thriving not just getting through this time when they can't go to preschool physically but actually thriving as well great topic thank you so much Don thank you Laura and you've been listening to the way home will be right back. Welcome back you're listening to the way home of Laura Sneath years Laura. It's been a wonderful hour once again I'm so grateful that John Tesh was able to share his wonderful new memoir relentless unleashing a life of purpose grit and faith wherever fine books are sold it will keep you absolutely inspired and entertained Well speaking of inspiration and entertainment Jimmy Dean is here the man with the golden pipes and the great good news Hi Jim How you doing my dear Laura how are you doing Tell us what you got this week there's always so much going on in the world but I know you have a knack for finding all the best and most heartwarming stories I sure do are we're going to start you off in one of my adopted home states in the Midwest the Buckeye State Ohio a Cleveland area a couple's wedding reception like many all across the country became a victim of the Coven 1000 pandemic there were still very much and unfortunately however you've heard the old saying turning lemons into lemonade Well that's exactly what this newlywed couple decided to do what they do is they not only wanted to donate their reception food to a local homeless shelter in Cleveland but also to serve the Beales as well they serve them their name is Emily and Tyler it's upon us and they already have paid the caterer in advance before all this went down so the couple took all the food to a place called and yes this is the name Laura's home Women's Crisis Center in Cleveland it has nothing to do with you or about it just has your 1st name at all of this story do you love that story I love it too and you know what I wish I was involved with something like that people what a what a marriage they're going to have with big hearts like that I can only imagine they have a lot of happiness ahead of that they are God bless them yeah and you know those wedding then you are interested I mean it had things like fried chicken Not that I would eat it every day green bean salad mac and cheese for the kids overall they served about $130.00 women and children at the at the shelter they were able to enjoy the meal and again all thanks to the newlyweds and in response to all of this the city missions Facebook the. Page wrote this they said this we pray this amazing couple is blessedly and meant immensely blessed with a marriage and thank them for inviting our guest to the wedding feast they say I just wonderful things so I mean as I said they lost a wedding reception but I think they gain much much more. That is really beautiful thank you so much but I'm I'm sure you have more friends I do know one well you probably have heard in the news I'm sure at what happened out in Iowa not that long ago they had that. That's the direction yes I guess it was a terrible storm 14 hour storm and it left millions in the dark just see if your heart really goes out to the people well anyway here's the simple lining in the cloud if you will a restaurant owner in Iowa is feeding hundreds of people for free as a result of this storm and the storm again it had hurricane force winds of about 100 miles an hour destroying or severely damaging thousands of homes schools and businesses you name it leaving millions in the dark in both Iowa and parts of Illinois but even as the community continues to struggle with the recovery to this day a barbecue restaurant owner is name is William fairly and he's using his grill at Willy Ray's q. Shack to provide the neighbors with at least $400.00 meals daily and guess what at no cost whatsoever that's the best part of it it's free and this is amazing it is and he goes on to say it's a terrible time for a body right now for sure he said he got a lot of people without power and he's he's just trying to do what we can as a company to make sure that we do our part money's not an issue we're trying to make people's lives better during this very difficult time and the owner had also been donating meals to entire communities throughout the Cedar Rapids region including those left homeless by Beth the ratio including volunteers and even line workers as well they're very essential and yeah yeah and let that the generosity both both involving food and both involving people that are just so generous and these are not easy times for everybody and are not like you know that people have not been already struggling with the pandemic and closures and things like that. I just love these stories thank you so much as always leading us out of the show and into the week with wonderful good news thank you Bob small engineer with the most just and feel that you're right every good news stories love you all and thanks again to John Tashan all my great guests tonight on the way home with Laura Smith have a beautiful week everybody stay safe happy healthy well all that good stuff.
