Theyve seen a spike in these types of thefts since tuesday. And through tuesday, theyve had 116 reported package thefts so far this year. And 30 alone in september. Police told us thieves follow amazon, ups, fed ex and u. S. Postal Service Trucks to figure out where theyre going and they actually go back to the homes and steal the packages once theyre delivered outside. What were seeing is that homes that are clustered be the targets. Its easy prey for these subjects. Theyre able to get in and out of homes quickly in and out of doorways porches et cetera and be able to walk off with a number of packages at one time. Thats the good news. High speed chase ended with a crash here 93 north near exit 16. It turns out the man had several warrants for his arrest. His name not been released this weekend facing multiple charges for that incident, including assault and battery on a Police Officer. New hampshire has one of the highest opoid overdoses in the nation right now. Close to 500 deaths a year. To put that in perspective, the state sees roughly 20 homicides in a year. Now, many loved one addicted to opoids have desperate to find help before its too late. Earlier this week, fox 25 Stephanie Coueignoux sat down with one mother who recently lost her 18yearold son to an opoid overdose. Shes calling on the state to force a law that would force addicts into treatment against their will. I remember thinking. Buy more time. I thought we still had a fight. Her 18yearold son john in july. After he overdosed on a combination of fentanyl and cocaine. Two weeks before, she had called pelham New Hampshire police to involuntary commit him under state law that he was a danger to himself. They come over and said, theres nothing we can do. Hes not mentally unstable. A judge makes you mentally unstable as far as im concerned but that law says mental illness. Reporter part of police job is to get them clean, something she wasnt able to do for her own son. She lives more than 2 miles away from the massachusetts state line. Massachusetts has a section 75, whereas here in New Hampshire they dont. Under section 35, a relative or Police Officer can go to court to involuntarily commit someone who is using drugs or alcohol. If the court agrees, that person is then sent to a treatment of law. New hampshire is one of three that do not. And i can walk into a courtroom and section them under my job. But couldnt come home and do it for my own child. Reporter according to the Massachusetts Department of corrections, last year, more than 2,000 people were committed under section 35. Jason yeah, thieves could be waiting, its happened in years past. Fox 25 Stephanie Coueignoux is live in canton at a site, that spot is one of many designated as a safe package spot. Reporter yeah, this is one of the amazon locations. They actually have these yellow orange lockers set up at different gas stations as well as hotels around the Greater Boston area. This is what the deal is. You order something online through amazon you have a couple of different options on where you want your package delivered. You can actually have them delivered to one of these locker locations. And what you do is they give you a code you enter that code into your package and you head on home. Police say this is probably a safer bet for you than to have those packages delivered to your house. And in fact, in cambridge, police told us that theyve seen a spike in these type of package thefts recently. Through tuesday, theyve actually had 116 reported thefts. So far this year. And po of these types of thefts alone since september. Police telling us they follow these amazon, postal Service Trucks. To figure out where theyre going and they return to those homes to steal the packages once theyre delivered outside. What were seeing is homes clustered together, homes close to roads, those are the homes that tend to be the targets. Its easy pray for these suspects. Theyre able to quickly get in and out of homes quickly in and out of doorways porches et cetera and be able to walk off time. Reporter police say if you do still want it delivered to your home, its a good idea to have someone sign for it so you know its inside of your home and not just left out through your front door, you can also have it delivered to your work or one of these locker locations. Marijuana becomes legal in massachusetts next month now and police are worried about seeing more impaired drivers as a have a roadside test for drugs like they do for alcohol. But as fox 25 Vanessa Welch shows us, Law Enforcement officers in colorado are testing a possible solution. Reporter in colorado where marijuana has been legal since 2014. More people are smoking marijuana and eating edibles and getting behind the wheel. Ive been driving down the road and the guy next to me is lighting a pipe. Reporter these are just fears not corrections, 4. 12 accidents in colorado involved a driver tested positive for cannabis. And now were concerned well see the same in massachusetts when marijuana becomes legal next month. Were allowing more people to drive impaired on our streets. And people are going to die because of it. Reporter i sat down with the police chief michael i cant passed it. Like many Law Enforcement, he opposed it. They dont have a test for drugs like they do for alcohol. Plus chief carmichael says theres no standard limit for impairment. Do you think people are going to get away with it . They are, yeah, unfortunately. In colorado, theyre impaired if they have five nanograms of thc in their system. Right now blood tests are only used as evidence. Bu program that test saliva. But the results dont tell you the amount of thc. They have thc in their system but did they take that drug today or yesterday . Even officers using the devices have concerns. Some of those instruments are fairly large. And i think that would preclude them being used in a patrol car. Many of the devices test enzymes that are sensitive to heat and cold. Massachusetts passes a law for these devices they may not hold up in court. Im sure were going to see a lot of cases down the pike that were going to have to deal with and were probably going to lose a lot of those cases. They have a few officers specifically trained to identify those on drugs but chief carmichael worries thats not enough. Fox 25 investigatess road along with the drug recognition expert this summer. They use blood cease and, to try to prove whether a suspect is under the influence and even what type of drug the person is on. We actually have over 100 data points that were looking at. Its not just, the guy has bloodshot eyes hes drunk. Were on violations for drunk driving up 42 since 2011 in massachusetts. Many worry legalizing marijuana will increase that. Its just going to be difficult, very difficult for us to handle it. Heather Vanessa Welch and they were against, in other states where legalized marijuana and even here in massachusetts, they told us, quote, these are fears theyre not facts. They all made the same dooms date scenario. They also said Neither Police nor mr. Is did anything to address the standard similar to alcohol when the state decriminalized marijuana and when the medical marijuana was passed. Jason people may have to wait longer for the pot shops to open up. Theyre pushing back the opening dates of those pot shops by a few months. To mid 2018. It will give us more time to regulate sales. And this morning, the sun chronicle reports that keating was a senior at Bridgewater State universitiened on the football team. His High School Coach renned him as great kid. Theyre investigating how and why he ended up on the wrong side of the highway. Heather a roxbury man charged with driving drunk and causing state trooper. Reginald was in court on thursday. When pie ram rear ended a patrol car on route 3. He was expected to the hospital but expected to be okay. He will be due back in court. The man accused of dragging two Police Officers and also hitting two more, appeared in court yesterday. Vincent weeks facing a handful stoughton street. These these two officers dragged 20 feet before being flown from their car. Then hit two officers who were running over to helpful all four officers treated and released from the hospital and expected to be okay. Weeks mother says they have the wrong man. Its something theyve done for decades. Its an important symbol to the town. That sacred place for selfexpression and acceptance for students between grades 6 and 12 defaced. Several residents outraged to morning. Call police who are now investigating the situation as a hate crime. School district records show two written statements by students complaining about johnthony walker. Earlier this week, fox 25 Stephanie Coueignoux sat down with one mother who recently lost her 18yearold son to an create a law that would force addicts into treatment against their will. I think 40 more times. I thought we still had a fight. Reporter Cheryl Mercier lost her 18yearold son john carter in july after he overdosed on a combination of fentanyl and cocaine. Just two weeks before, she had called pelham New Hampshire police to involuntary commit him under state law that he was danger to himself. They come over. And said, theres nothing we can do. Hes not mentally unstable. Well drugs make you mentally unstable as far as im concerned but that law says mental illness. Reporter as a Police Officer, part of cheryls job is to help addicts get clean, something she says she wasnt able to do for her own son. Cheryl is less than two miles away from the massachusetts state line. Massachusetts has section 35 under section 35, a relative or Police Officer can go to court to involuntary commit someone who is abusing drugs or alcohol. If the court agrees, that person is then sent to a treatment facility. Massachusetts is one of three New England States to have this type of law. New hampshire is one of three that do not. And i can walk into a courtroom and section them under my job. But i couldnt come home and do it for my own reporter according to the Massachusetts Department of corrections last year more than 2,000 people were committed under section 35. Cheryl and her family now started a petition urging New Hampshire lawmakers to pass their own version of the law. Its just another tool. Its not a cure all. Its a tool to help people.
