Reporter stefanie, we still have a lot of heavy smoke here on summer and oliver street in everett. We can show you the effort by firefighters to make sure all the flames are put out in this house. This of course was the focus of a day long standoff. Police had a man surrounding this home since mid morning. Possible gunfire or a loud boom as neighbors described hearing this morning. They came out. The man inside refused to give up an just about 45 minutes ago when we were live on air, we saw this man surrender. In fact wey some video that one of our cameras recorded. We can show you where this man, who is the subject of the intense standoff, finally came out with his hands up. He appeared from our Vantage Point to be an older gentleman, and then Police Rushed in and took him to the ground. The timing here is especially critical because what felt like just a few moments after that arrest was made by officers is when we saw flames erupt from that house, going from apparently everything being okay fire wise to a very large fire in a short amount of time. Thats when firefighters rushed in, police tried to get people out of the area in this neighborhood where houses arent fairly close together. One woman who was living next door. We in the last 30 minutes or so add chance to speak with neighbors. Weve heard from two who believe that fire may have been started actually before the man was take than into custody. Thats the critical question tonight because investigators want to know if that man started the fire before he gave up or somehow the fire started in the effort to take this man down. All Afternoon Police have been communicating with him over a bullhorn, urging him to come out telling him to put his hands up, none of that seemed to be working until a little after 5 30 this evening when he gave himself up, and this fire started. Eric. Heres what we know at this point. This standoff happened or started i should say around mid morning when neighbors heard what one woman described as a boom coming from inside this house. Its a home that everybody older man occupied. When Police Arrived on the scene they brought in the s. W. A. T. Team, a hv i armed vehicle and surrounded the house, and then there were hours of waying. We could hear police talking to the man over the bullhorn, trying to coax him out. Around 3 30 we began to hear pops or shots come from police, not bullets but perhaps what they call flash bang or teargas cannisters. Then this culminated in the last hour when the man surrendered. He came out with his hands up. We got video of Police Taking this man down and into custody, and then just moments later a fire erupted in that house from which he had just come.
