Jessica reyes is monitoring central mass, Catherine Parrotta seeing a mix of snow and slush in lowell. Christine mccarthy is with commuters at south station. Julie grauert updating drive times during the messy commute. Daniel first, we kick things off this morning with fox25 Storm Tracker weather meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz teaming up with shiri spear. Kevin, this is unfold be just like you thought it was. Kevin it has been a good team efforts to show whats going to be happening with ate very tricky forecast. You know, we look back last february and blizzards happening, those are easier to happening than this slop out there and how much snow will fall. When youre dealing with this, what is going to fall becomes the problem. In this case ice the Biggest Issue. Sure we have seen snow, ralph on twitter, four everyones in amesbury, highest i have seen so far, not saying ralph you mismeasured but love to have another report to see whats at least two reports in northern essex county over through northern Middlesex County and Southern New Hampshire upwards of three inches and portions of New Hampshire as well and here is some rain falling and creeping northward and freezing air and you see sleet here in the boston area that changeover occurs and go from sleet to freezing rain. Thats the way it progresses because sleep deeper layer of cold air and as the layer becomes smaller, it doesnt have time to refreeze on the way down and snowflake melts into a rain drop and doesnt have time to freeze into a ice pellet and becomes a glaze of ice and cons to the west gone from snow to sleet most locations and progress to freezing rain and really, shiri, thats the biggest problem with the storm system going forward. Shiri absolutely. What we have in boston over the coming hours, we have a look at ipswich, sleet and freezing rain that actually hang tight for the next couple of hours, so straight through the end of the morning here we will have to conditions out there. Hey, check out what is expected in boston because boston you got a few more hours here of dicey conditions by 10 00, 11 00 this morning, all rain and thats what we have through the rest of the afternoon. In plymouth you can see same situation here. I think at 9 00 we will have to watch out for icy patches, otherwise the rain kicks off just after that. But in the worcester area, temperatures are going to be so close to freezing we will have to keep a close eye on icy spots all the way through it until the precipitation ends between four and 7 00 p. M. For good. Same deal in Southern New Hampshire, keene sleet now to freezing rain and icy patches as well into the sacked half of the day and continues to time out the slow improvements through the morning hours, but right now Julie Grauert up with live drive time traffic. Julie, where are the problem spots now . Julie like to show the very wide map to explain and spots arent eve and we arent safe in i where from it and graphics are scattered across the map. Take closer look at 128 north and southbound. On the northbound side we have accident at winn street in burlington and also waiting for the accident to be cleared on northbound side near route 2 as you head into lexington. Over to the pike accident eastbound right after route 9 in framingham, also an issue street in newton. I also want to let you know about an accident 128 northbound at route 9 in wellesley. So wherever you go you will deal with some issues. Live look at the pike through brighton and see those roads still look very slippery and gathered off to the side. 21 minutes on the pike from the tunnel. 23 minutes on route 9 from 495 to speen street and 50 minutes on 128 from route 1 in peabody to the weston tolls. Daniel and sara, back to you. Daniel like she has been reporting the rush of the morning commute is slower than Michael Henrich is live on the roads for us this morning where, michael, you already come across poor conditions and jackknifed truck and youre in methuen right now. Michael we just got into methuen on 495 north, passed over the lawrence double decker bridge, and now we find ourselves behind a plow as mass dot said safest place is to be lend instead of in front of it and we are seeing that as this particular plow not only moving ground as well. Conditions are not great. Not great at all. Theres definitely a buildup of the sleet and slush and iciness on the roadways is clear wherever we have been this morning. We were on 128 for sometime, we took a trip on 3a and then, of course, saw the two jackknifed tractortrailers on 495 north by route 3. Air we saw an suv or minivan spun off on the Center Median of around. I posted a couple pictures of that on my twitter feed if you want to take a look and i heard kevin precipitation wanted to know what sort of precipitation is coming down in amesbury and it is about a ten minute drive from there and we will get update for you in next report so. For now send it back to the studio. Daniel these conditions out there causing several accidents this morning. Thats whats being blamed for causing trailer rollover in sutton overnight. 126 northbound photographer at the scene says this happened just before 2 00 this morning. Right now we are working to find out if anyone was hurt in this accident. Of course, we will bring you in i updates as soon as we get them daniel 7 06 right now. We continue the Team Coverage north of the city where people can expect more snow than rain. Fox25 Catherine Parrotta has been live for us in lowell this catherine, we have heard the pings as the weather hits your hat and jacket all morning long. Are things letting up where you are . Catherine it is still coming down right now, daniel, and you will see the snow coming down and snow bouncing off my jacket. It is not a heavy snow, visibility is pretty good and, however, it is coming down. Showing you the stretch of road all morning long, Central Street here in lowell, and as you can see as the traffic is moving and more of the traffic is coming by, it is starts to beat down the layer of slush just a little bit, but still the greasy slick coating on top of the roads this morning, not down to bare pavement yet, not by any means, and of course hearing the hearing the little bit of ice on the jacket, that means the snow is very slippery, and we have seen people out with shovels trying to clear the sidewalks, also trucks coming by with sand, also some plows as well. I have an email out to dpw and i have not heard back from them in number of crews they have out i will be calling them once the cold out. We are seeing people walk around, and this might be a typical attire you might expect, hood on, scarfs, gloves, snow pants or boots, held off on the snow pants today, but take a look at the video because this man had an interesting take on snow attire. Im not sure if this is Wishful Thinking or all he had available, but either way, i appreciated the somebrenda stevensero and keeping the snow out of his eyes anyway and keeping warm thoughts in lowell this morning. Crews also shoveling this morning and also bundled up and they are saying it is extremely icy, even to be dealing it as clearing the sidewalks and hear more from the shovelers coming up next half hour. For now live here in lowell, Catherine Parrotta, fox25 news. Sara the conditions arent any better to our west. Fox25 Jessica Reyes is live in worcester this morning and it has been coming down there all morning long as well, jess. Jessica it has, sara. Actually seems to be lightening right now we are seeing very fine type of icy snow falling, a little bit lighter than it was a come of hours ago, but we are here in the Webster Square area of worcester, webster street right now, and there are a number of tire tracks here and there have been plows coming by here, and this is one of the less busy roads in the main area of worcester, so it is not plowed as thoroughly as some of the other roads, and have seen plow trucks in the city of worcester, but number of independent contractors as well, so they are out in full force on the roads this morning. One thing to note, i just saw on twitter, Commuter Rail, at south station this morning, the Commuter Rail is running smoothly from the city of worcester into boston, and some people are commenting on that, happy with how thats going and a lot of people are heeding the advice of the commissioner of public works here in worcester to stay off the roads and use Public Transportation where possible. We know that crews here in worcester, they are going to be working very, very hard over the actually did just talk to one person a short time ago who says she enjoys this kind of weather. We will be hearing from her coming up in 30 minutes. Live in worcester, im Jessica Reyes, fox25 news. Daniel parking bans are in effect in several cities and towns, and in worcester cars ordered off the streets at 10 00 last night. Dpw has 300 plows on call this morning for complete list of parking bans as well as other closings and delays, just head over to the website at myfoxboston. Com and check out the fox25 weather app. Sara this morning the delays and cancellations have already started at logan. Flights heading around the country and even to canada have been dropped. Yesterday many of the flights impacted were going between boston and chicago. All the problems are thanks to the storm that is sweeping the country right now. Many airlines are waving rebooking fees for people traveling right into the storms path. Fox25 will continue to monitor flights at logan throughout the storm. This morning on the red line as switch frozen to cold, general manager told fox25 less than 30 minutes ago it has been infectioned. Julie we track traffic and weather every ten minutes, do that for you everyday, but especially important today when the roads are so treacherous out there, and i dont use the word lightly. Several accidents one on the pike and one on 128 northbound and show you how they are affecting drive times in a moment. First, here is shiri. We work the way up to the pike an accident on eastbound right after route 9 in framingham we also have an accident westbound right after washington street in newton as you approach the weston tolls. Here is live look at the pike through brighton and roads are places and kevin and shiri will tell you more about the mixture of snow and freezing rain, all of it problematic and leading to longer than usual drive times. 18 minutes route 1 from braintree split to columbia road and 25 minutes on 24 from 123 to 128. Fox25 Storm Tracker weather chief meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz in this morning with us and, kevin, this is really just a problem for everyone out there whos driving trying to get anywhere. Kevin ice is big issue and telling us about the reports and really comes down to where is the worst of it going to be the rest of this morning and turned to rain here southcoast and south shore, out to cape cod and report in from joel bill in wareham which is right along buzzards bay, of course, is not south and loads are a bit slushy and not too travel wise and a little bit of sleet and rain on top of that making slushy morning for you out there in reports coming in via twitter and see the reports know whats happening in your town to tell everybody about it but rain live sleet line thats just around new bedford and really new bedford predominantly rain, if not totally rain at this point, sleep happening in the purple and mixing with snow from time to time, see a little bit of light snow accumulation and sleet accumulation inside the studios from dedham not too far from weymouth and from joel, half inch of slushy conditions out there in wait mouth for us this morning, sleet slow mix. 5 inches and up here snow and look at rain starting to work onshore and live Storm Tracker radar trying to determine whats going on and looking at whole atmosphere to see whats falling as rain drop or snowflake falls melt on the way down and some have to take a look at whats coming with the air off the motion and refreeze into ice pellets, get sleet, small layer of warm air thats when you get no refreezing until it hits the ground, that becomes freezing rain or glaze. Bottom line is as the rain changeover occurs, look at temperatures back here, Southern New Hampshire into northern worcester county, back through western mass and southern vermont, those are freezing temperatures and rain falling on top of that, you will get the glaze to form and cause that freezing rain situation which is so treacherous. Here is some of the snow reports, latest information in pepperell and ipswich both inch and a half, dracut over an inch and shiri, not the snow a problem. Shiri going to be the ice. Snow and sleet expecting to last through the morning hours, expect to see snow on the map, sleet on the map at 10 00 a. M. And mostly rain and ice through the middle of the day and precipitation will be so much we could see some icy spots all the way until 7 00 p. M. Across the interior north of worcester and see Winter Weather advisory until 7 00 p. M. In and around the boston area, eastern mass, south of the pike, 1 00 p. M. Until the slippery roads. This afternoon we get up into the 40s in boston and norwood and plymouth, even 50s for the cape and immediate north shore and thats going to weed out any kind of was iy spots but where we have highs in the 30s, temperatures warmup is delayed even by a couple of degrees you know what that means, right . We are going to be watching for ice all day long. Plus tonight we fall back into the 20s, so that actually means any lingering moisture refreezes, next batch of rain showers, not whole lot of it but Late Wednesday night into early thursday morning, the chance right there over southeastern massachusetts, so 7day forecast with the weekend always in view, we got heaviest and steadiest precipitation changing to rain 1 00 p. M. Today, it is going to taper into drizzle and by 7 00 p. M. Hyatt 40. Tomorrow mostly cloud and he dry at 44, got the overnight showers into early thursday and then just flock of birds to start the newior friday and saturday highs in the lower 40s with few of those flakes. Sara checking White Knuckle driving conditions as the sun comes up and hard to see, not too bad through this windshield, this is what will greet you on the morning commute Michael Henrich is riding shotgun in amesbury right now. We will check in with him in just a moment and good morning, everybody, it is tuesday, december 29th, im sara underwood. Daniel im Daniel Miller in for Gene Lavanchy this morning. Winter weather advisory is in effect for everyone this morning check weather and traffic every ten minutes and Julie Grauert monitoring the drive times and fox25 Storm Tracker weather chief meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz teaming up with shiri spear this morning. You guys have been tracking the storm the past few days as it to the end of it yet. Kevin you know what, bottom line is where the snow and ice are falling right now and continue to fall through this morning and seeing a changeover happening along the coast to the south to rain, thats what green is here and green predominant precipitation and you will be out of the slippery conditions once it washes off the roadways and moved off the roadways. In the purple thats mostly sleet, in the blue mostly snow and mixing happening everywhere, see that here, see dividing line, not going to see exact right along 128 but theres going to be mixing, im seeing that out the window here in dedham and snow to the north, saw the pictures from amesbury, michael driving around there and continue into Southern New Hampshire, snow in New Hampshire and over in vermont and five inches in sugar bush in northern vermont and snow up that way, otherwise stopped for the time being and mixing like continues new england and sure it changes to stay at or below freezing, that will cause icing conditions and snow reports coming in, one inch of snow but all sleet, two and a half inches in amesbury, seems the most common report so far. Now, boston officially at. 7 inches just under an inch about throw quarter of an inch and not even in the top six for least snowiest decembers because we had snow zero or trace but put you in that list and no longer in the top four for the latest snowfall on record, now we will tie with number five in 1941 and this is what expected about one to three inches and seeing that so far with higher amounts to the north. That. 7 inches, by the way, shiri, also means we have had more snow this december, even with all the warm air we had last december. Shiri temperature below freezing in a lot of spots bedford and lawrence 41 , portsmouth, New Hampshire at 32 and you will find the coastline a little bit warmer, so 34 from start weeding out the icy concerns as we move throughout the morning and temperatures below freezing and it is going to take awhile to warm up the interior, so 23 you see in worcester and 23 in fitchburg, i dont expect temperatures there to be above freezing until much closer to lunchtime today or even possibly never. We are going to hover so close to freezing in worcester this afternoon. Slippery conditions out there now for sure at noon time 38 in boston and icy in northern mass, Southern New Hampshire, central mass into the afternoon we go with plain rain for most but again inland spots definitely concerning with temperatures so close to 32 and break down some of the trouble spots coming up in a couple minutes and right now talk about trouble spots, here is Julie Grauert with live drive time traffic. Julie . Julie catch a glimpse of ones that arent fogged or snowed out, heavy volume very slippery right now and slick. So please take it easy. Turned on the radar, those are all the colors youre seeing, so as far as alternate routes, that may be even more problematic because of the side roads havent been plowed and addressed as quickly as main roads could be even more dangerous. We do have two lanes blocked right now on 495 right near river road in andover, also another accident northbound at route 28 in andover. So thats been a problematic area in the Lowell Chelmsford and andover area this morning. As we shift closer in you could see the red icons, a lot of accident on the side streets like i mentioned. Still waiting for the accident to clear on 24, rollover crash on 123, right in brockton. Here are live drive times, 21 minutes route 1 from 128 to the tobin and 25 minutes on the expressway from the braintree split to the mass pike and 41 minutes on 93 south from 495 to the leverett connector. Daniel and sara, back to you. Daniel roads are not only concern during the heart of the so are the rails. Gene . Sara we have had weather related problems already this morning. Christine mccarthy live at south station monitoring the commute, that is, this morning. Christine . Christine it is getting a lot busier here at south station, but still pretty quiet at this hour of the morning. Take a look at the board behind me you can see no problems, no delays to report on the board but that, of course, is not the case for all the trains across the mbta. You heard a little bit earlier about awe heater not functioning on a red line switch causing it to be impacted with ice. Since then a Maintenance Crew has resolved that issue and delay on the Green Line D Branch is also resolved by now. On the Commuter Rail some delays on middleborough line to south station, switch to south station and most recently the Providence Stoughton train not stopping at failure. And going here at south station. Well aware of all the problems aware last winter but he has faith in the t this time around. I expect this year not to have as much snow as last year statistically speaking and keep it running through 95 of the day. Christine because of the disastrous winter last year and breakdown of mbta Service Last Year but again public official are urging drivers to stay off the messy roads and have faith in the t and take Public Transit. They say there have been a lot of investments and changes made to make sure that everyone has a painless of commute on Public Transit as possible. Now, of course, we will be monitoring whats going on throughout the day on the t, the Commuter Rail and several delays expected but those seem to be resolved pretty quickly so far, so we will let you know how it goes throughout the morning live at south station, christine mccarthy, fox25 news. Daniel sara snow and sleet have been falling since we first went on the air at 4 00 a. M. Catherine parrotta is live at Central Street in lowell and people got the shovels out quite early this morning, catherine. Catherine you know what speaking of shoveling, sara, is there anything more winter rich than december, snow coming down , of course, this is new england after all but what else does new england like is Dunkin Donuts and you have to shovel off the sidewalk in front of the Dunkin Donuts and just one spot where they have been shoveling out in lowell this morning because the snow is still coming down here as you could see and you have hearing it bounce off my jacket and a little bit of sleet as well and Central Street, we have been showing you this throughout the morning and thick layer of slush on top of the road as well and i did hear this morning and also pretreated the roads with salt last night, so they are doing they can to keep up today and accumulation isnt the most we have ever seen but still stacking up but with a little bit of ice causing road to be slick andk mentioned shoveling out sidewalk at Dunkin Donuts and a little bit farther up Central Street theres another crew that was shoveling out businesses that end of the street as well, and i asked them what they did to prepare and worried this winter might shape up like last winter, and here is what they said to those questions. Putting plows on, and making sure we were ready. Hope not like last winter. Not going to be as bad as last winter. Catherine bring attention to aaa truck and check in with Lowell Police very early this morning and at that point havent been too many accidents and know as the traffic is getting going at this point in the morning crashes are occurring and julie has been sure this morning and working to keep the roads clear as well and keep you updated on the conditions here in lowell throughout the morning. For now live here in lowell, Catherine Parrotta, fox25 news. Daniel conditions arent any better. People are used to this, jess. Jessica they certainly are, daniel. This has been happening over the last couple of hours now, but the snow does seem to be easing up just a little bit. Just sort of a light very fine snow thats falling right now and at the moment we are here in the Webster Square area, this is a look at webster street, and there are tire tracks here. People have been driving past this all morning long going pretty slowly, but now things are easing up a bit, we are seeing more and more people out on the roads here this morning. We know the city of worcester had throw hundred plow trucks and several hundred tons of salt ready and still on call right now and working over the next couple of hours, so they ahead of them, but over the past couple of hours we spoke to someone who says they enjoyed the conditions. Take a listen. Might help shovel out the driveway, shovel other peoples driveway. I just love this kind of weather. Jessica once again, the roads, conditions are Better Seeing more people on the roads, wearing down some of the tire tracks, still number of plows on the roads, and as far as the Commuter Rail goes, things are smooth sailing from worcester into boston, so it does seem as though people are heeding a lot of these warnings, maybe staying off the roads, taking Public Transportation where available, but again, crews here in worcester with Public Works Department they have several hours ahead of them here. Live in worcester, im Jessica Reyes, fox25 news. Sara ahead the states we will pass along power outage. Sara they may have sound suv responsible for a deadly hit and run. Fox25 able to get a glimpse of jeep surrounded by crime cape in the Police Department garage and police say this may have been the vehicle that took 71 after being hit on pleasant street stens from her front door. I would advise go much slower here is shiri with more. Shiri icy mix and around 10 00 this morning for the afternoon we got ice that will continue into central mass and Southern New Hampshire. Mass dot has thousands of pieces of equipment right now to keep things moving. Sara administrator for the Massachusetts Department of transportation. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Good morning. Sara tell us how youre treating the roads right now. Storm giving us everything that we expected. Started off snow overnight, turning over to snow and freezing rain and havent seen any surprises or anything out of the ordinary. We still have almost 1500 pieces of equipment on road throughout the date using everything from plows to salt and liquid deiser. One of the concerns is pavement below freezing, so even as it begins to rise, takes a little bit of time for the pavement temperature to catch up with that and using abundance of caution, lower those, give room to do our job and have lowered the speed limit on mass turnpike 40 Miles Per Hour from the new york border to sturbridge and increased safety on that stretch of roadway, but slow and steady is course of the day, have the opportunity to use the mbta, encourage him to do that and as we turns into more freezing rain we will continue to treat the roads so that we are ready already looking forward to tonights commute when the temperatures drop again and everything that we have on the road want to make sure it doesnt freeze up and create hazard the day as well. Daniel what is the biggest challenge, snow or ice or combination like we have today . Because you have to hit it from multiple disciplines. Not a plow event, not just a chemical events, everything you have in the arsenal, which is good. Frankly a test like this really probably a little later in the season than normal but early enough for us kind of what we want to do, shake the cobwebs off, hit it, hit it hard and paying attention to the small things. And making sure we have room to accept all the rain that we are going to see throughout the day today and into the evening tonight so everything we have comes into play and planning effort we put into storm beginning last week through the sara thank you for your time. Julie take a look at this, dozens of accidents, too many to detail, and highlight major ones and problem areas we have been seeing throughout the morning. This area 495 and 93 has been such an issue. We have two lanes blocked on 495 near river road, rollover 495 near the lowell connector and accident on 495 northbound near route 28. So avoid this area at all costs, it has been so slippery and i think it is surprising people because even though we warn you how bad the roads are and people head out and a lot of issues there. Accident closer into the city and few to the pike waiting for this one to clear, several issues in brockton and 24 rollover at 123 and another at 106. Kevin people looking out and seeing three, four inches in places like amesbury northward into New Hampshire and most places not seeing very much. Then you get out there on the roadways, temperatures are below freezing, especially if your walkway havent been treated, you will have ice out there and that becomes a treacherous situation, thats why seeing so many accidents that julie has been telling but all morning long. Now, there has been a changeover and continues to occur, plymouth, march field and southeastward across the southcoast, cape cod, islands to new bedford, mattapoisett all seeing rain now, sleet and rain mixing together in this area here, dedham in here and tell you rain out there as well as maybe some sleet, so cant tell about the sleet, but certainly see rain falling and slushy route 1 on 128 this way and mix happening here on north shore, gloucester to ipswich and look at that, live storm Doppler Radar change to rain as youre watching it with me, coming on situation. Problem is back here with snow and mixed precipitation as rain works inland, stat at or below freezing and big issue here because falling liquid, doesnt mean it will stay that way when it hits the very cold surfaces, below freezing, you will have ice and glaze of ice and thats the most treacherous of all and then you cant see it, talk often by black ice happening and have a glaze out there, maybe you could see the ice on handles staircases walking outside and might not see it under a foot or snow reports, north field in New Hampshire, six inches of snow, elevations helping out there, but seeing reports places like Line Mountain in New Hampshire, northward to sugar bush and ski areas during the holiday week, need the fresh snow and getting it and New Hampshire 4. 3 inches, amesbury up to three, haverhill over two, wakefield and ipswich both at inch and a half and might be all you will see from this and generally coating to an inch in boston and south shore and going to watch away with the rain coming in any way, one to three inches in most locations, Northern Tier of massachusetts and more central New Hampshire and points northward into vermont and maine, but each there there will be a changeover to freezing rain later on today, this is what is really going to be the biggest concern and shiri we talked about this all along, dont look for a big snowstorm but going to be a mess. Going to be messy out there now, even though the temperature in boston at 34 which is above freezing you can see what sloppy roads we have and still got mixed precipitation falling. There creating wind chill of 21, ahead. Temperatures especially inland really struggling to get above freezing and thats why we are going to see some more ice develop into central Southern New Hampshire, where we have the deeper shading thats where we have cooler temperatures even into the afternoon we will have threat for icy roadways, trace up to tenth of inch of ice on top of the snow and eastern mass, southeastern mass, this is why we are warning you to be very careful out there today because it might be a little bit of a mix now but as soon as we get that glaze in ice really dangerous for walking, for driving, for traveling, we just want you to be fully aware that we really dont see many improvements across the interior until late in the day when we get into only upper 30s there, but boston southward, going to be lower 40s this afternoon. Low temps tonight back into the 20s and 30s. So even though it is not going have everything refreezing on the roadways and watch out for black ice overnight and during the day highs around 40 , most of tomorrow dry once we hit the overnight hours and pull in rain showers across southeastern massachusetts and at least the chance for it into early thursday. Here is 7day forecast with the weekend always in view. We got more 40s tomorrow at 44 , 48 on thursday with early showers and clearing out, new years eve is looking picture perfect with temps in the 30s. By friday only some flurries to usher in the new year. Back to you guys. Sara all right. The weather alert continues as ice and sleet make for a come you go up at 8 00 team sara target is partnering with gift cards. Target stores will Exchange Cards for more than 600 stores and restaurants. The program is available at over 1500 target stores. Daniel keep it slow if you have to hit the roads today. They say the temperature is really affecting things this morning. Kevin man what would you do with five minutes to kill, and a smart phone . Check the scores. Probably post a pic. Text a friend. How about register to vote . Really . You can. Five minutes online and a massachusetts drivers license is all it takes to register so you can vote for our next president. Go to registertovotema. Com. Sanders im Bernie Sanders and i approve this message. Kevin snow, sleet, freezing rain and tracking the heaviest as morning commute continues. Shiri we have Team Coverage this morning, and hourbyhour forecast to get you through the thick of the storm. Team reporters are out braving the elements. Daniel conditions on the roads in boston, lowell, worcester and everywhere in between. This is a Storm Tracker weather alert. Sara Winter Weather has finally descended into new england, and most of it this morning in the form of sleet and ice. Like right here in boston as we take a live look at the gorgeous skyline there. It is tuesday, december 29th, im sara underwood. Daniel im Daniel Miller. Big concern this morning is commute which normally would be winding down shortly but not in this type of weather. We have two meteorologist working on forecast. Chief Kevin Lemanowicz is here along with shiri spear. Cold temps are helping things as we move on, kevin. Kevin staying below freezing and change over to rain happens and inch of slush in way, bill brown New Hampshire says barely over an inch there, a pure sleet and that snow on the ground and still coming down heavily. Vfw parkway very slippery, be careful in the boston area and sleeting this charlestown, raining in dedham, i can verify that, fox 25 news in dedham and reports coming in and keep sending reports and stoughton a little bit of sleet and snow out that way and Doppler Radar, pinpoint a couple of these places that rain changeover line to the south of boston right in here. So the pure rain is happening on the line south of scituate, hanson and attleboro and a little farther north in raynham since first set that, this is mostly rain with some sleet mixing in in dedham and north of weston and get into a sleet with some snow mixing in situation north shore amesbury, three to four inches and reports two and a half to four inches in the town of amsburr and he Southern New Hampshire up to six inches of snow and sleet has fallen this morning. Into vermont seeing that changeover happening here too, i have report of five inches up in burlington and around the sugar bush area up there not far from burlington and warren, vermont and rain, snow, sleet changeover happening and really the other way, snow to sleet to rain changeover happening and rain creeps north and out of the woods, not really because temperatures back here in northern worcester county, Southern New Hampshire, southern vermont and stay at or below freezing as rain is coming down and that, shiri, one of the most treacherous situations as we get into the freezing rain. Shiri across the interior putting you on washout for icy conditions well into the afternoon. In the boston area through 10 00 this morning, watch out for at noon time i think we are in the clear here, it is going to be plain rain, we got the heaviest through about 1 00 p. M. And then things really ease up tapering off between four and 7 00 p. M. , plymouth same deal 10 00 a. M. And couple icy spots on south shore and mostly rain and problems north of boston, north shore and ipswich and a little sleet left at 10 00 this morning to freezing rain at lunchtime and then to plain rain into the afternoon and worcester we got the potential for ongoing slippery conditions. I know youre seeing 34 there for your afternoon temp in central mass and i know you see 33, 34 in keene, but temperatures so close to freezing theres definitely a potential of getting stuck. Lets turn over to Julie Grauert with live drive time traffic because, julie, you have been just as busy. Julie yes, i have. Together i will get through it, ramp route 9 eastbound to the river way exit in boston, it is truck and to the radar dozens of accidents. I had take you to the spot where we have seen a concentration of them, and im not going to name each one, isnt enough time in our long show, but you could see 495 very problematic both north and southbound. 93 south also been an issue, especially in the andover area. If you must head in that direction, please take it very, very slow and expect to see some residual delays from all of those accidents. You can see more accident icons, some of the side roads, route 1 northbound in particular over by the tobin. Accident at 106 and thats on the southbound lane of 24. Here is live look at pike through brighton where hazy conditions and wet roadways will slow you down. Over to live drive times, 128 to the tobin, 15 minutes on the split to columbia road and 123. Daniel sara Michael Henrich was out driving around and right now youre in amesbury where roads are looking pretty messy right now. Michael driving along the merrimac river and have people have a beautiful shot at the Merrimack Valley in amesbury, it is not doom and gloom but roads themselves not pretty at all as we head back on to them and show you the pile here even though they clearly been treated, clearly been plowed, Mother Nature is winning this round so to speak and continue to buildup icy layer on roadways. Going up hill here in news van and never a comfortable feeling we know that mass dot as haired on fox25 just a few minutes ago says they are throwing everything they have at this storm here, first real winter storm of this particular season. They say their big concern, of course, is the freezing temperature, road temperature and continuation of the icy conditions throughout the day even after precipitation does end up stopping and one plow ahead of us right now, leaving plenty of space between us and it and made to commonwealth to do their job. Here in amesbury as mentioned see folks on left and big out front yard and sidewalks as well and front of the fire hydrants. This is the area where kevin was amount of snowfall and sides of the road, three plus by my estimate this part of amesbury in the area and again going to keep an eye on that and get back on 95, 128, get you another look at the main highways in our next report. Lets send back to you. Daniel further north you go the more likely it is to keep snowing. Catherine parrotta live for us in lowell this morning. You have been talking to folks there, catherine. Catherine still seeing snow andissier than it has been and make the changeover to sleet wanted to give you look at conditions here on the road, Central Street, we have been here all morning, and you can see especially by the intersection at merrimac street, the slush in the road really starting to pile up and so wondering if this might be problematic a little bit as we continue to go through the morning here as cars continue to make way through the intersection. Havent seen anybody getting stuck just now and havent seen because very slick this morning and did get response from dpw a little bit earlier this morning, they tell me they have 25 plows out right now and pretreated roads with salt last night, also seeing a lot of people on foot this morning, and if you are going to be one of them, keep in mind you might want to wear something on your feet aside from sneakers because it is very slick and accumulation and i have been speaking with travelers this morning working on some of the sidewalks and tell me hope this wasnt as bad as last winter and shape up the same way and hearing from shovelers shaping up next half hour, Catherine Parrotta, fox25 news. Sara slushy conditions causing several accidents this morning, thats what causing this tractortrailer rollover in sutton overnight. This is on route 146 northbound right after boston road. Our photographer at the scene says this happened just before 2 30 this morning. Right now we are working to find out if anyone was hurt in this accident. As we get it. Not far from sutton and conditions in worcester are messy this morning, Jessica Reyes is live on webster street where ice is the big concern this morning. Jess . Jessica things are continuing to get messier and messier and about to turn or to rain and very messy mix of slush and doesnt look that bad and fishtail and looks can be deceiving and Hardware Store here and poke to manager here and quite a rush of people here yesterday, not so much getting big concern everywhere and city of worcester because it is hilly here and hearing from him coming up in 30 minutes. Live here in worcester, im Jessica Reyes, fox25 news. Sara we are keeping an eye out for Power Outages and stay uptodate on the forecast on fox25 weather app and free to download through the app store and google play. Julie track traffic and weather every ten minutes and 37 commute on 97 southbound from 495 in andover to the zakim bridge. Shiri deeper shading inland and concerns well into Daniel Donald trump announcer one candidate tough enough to take on the bully. Jeb bush donald, youre not going to be able to insult your way to the presidency. Thats not going to happen. applause announcer one candidate tough enough to take on isis. Jeb will destroy isis. It is happening at the south church on state street. Fox25 will be there to bring you complete coverage after her stop on the sea coast, clinton will hold another event in berlin, New Hampshire. Republican contender english also visiting the Granite State today. He is holding an event in peterborough this evening and gets underway at 5 00 this morning. Sara fox25 was nashua last night as insults were flying at trumps event. Trump had some choice words for the publisher of the union leader after editorial referred bully. Trump fought back referring to publisher as low life and sleeze bag. Supporters tell trumps no filter attitude is what attracting people. He is honest and tells it how it is and doesnt care if he telling you what he wants you to know. Sara and more drama at last nights event including protesters getting escorted out for calling trump a fascist. Trumps next Campaign Stop is tonight in iowa. Julie 8 16 and things are not improving. Route 1 in saugus volume is light and flashing lights of plow in that area. Otherwise things slow on the zakim, even on the expressway because youre speeds have to be a lot lower to deal with all the weather out there. Turn the radar on over the map, traffic map so you can see everywhere being affected right now by the weather that kevin and shiri will tell you more about. Major spot this morning where i have seen countless accidents has been 495 in the andover Lowell Haverhill areas. We have 67 within a mile or two radius. This is a tough spot of town and as we shift in closer to boston, accident on 128 northbound before main street in lynnfield. We also have an accident on route 2, this is westbound right after 2a in the concord rotary. Here are live drive times, 29 minutes on the pike from 495 to mass ave, 14 minutes on the expressway from the braintree split to the pike. 34 minutes on 128 from route 1 in peabody to the weston tolls. Lets check in now with chief meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz. Kevin, did i hear shiri say we may even see some of the snow thats falling, thin layer of ice freeze on top of it . Kevin rain coming down and crust on top of the snow. That means especially for ski areas in particular you need to go out and break that up to have fun and do sledding might have a good idea and changeover happening from snow to sleet in purple to rain in green but notice this peach color, thats where the temperatures are below freezing, even as the rain is taking over. That freezing surface down below it is going to freeze on contact and become a glaze of ice or coating on top of any snow you have so far. Here is where rain line reached now up around 128 to the braintree split and into quincy, also right into boston seeing mostly rain sleet mixing in and why the purple is there but theres all rain down here to the south shore, southcoast, so any sleet and snow you had accumulate this morning going to wash away or become a big ball of slush. Theres the mixing line coming up through the south shore and into the boston area. Sleet and some snow mixing into the north and west and rain starting to take over here, mixing happening on north shore, light accumulation, really heaviest seen in massachusetts though. Back here through western mass and southern vermont sleet taken over and here bottom line and rain moves inland, temperatures are going to slowly creep up, but even by 11 00 bedford into lawrence, still at freezing or of there as well and see significantissing and enough ice to accumulate, branches come down and also going to have the very slippery roadways to go along with it like we had already but already worse in the situation. We will be watching it closely with you and latest measurable snow in boston, january 13th looked very do believe a few days ago 1941 tying with the know today and 7 10 measured in boston means now, shiri, more snow this december than we had last december. Does that mean we will have more snow the entire winter . Who knows. Snow totals go in boston based on records, folks. Shiri snow and sleet fading here and bigger concern over the ice as we go into latemorning, early afternoon, and got to include that because total precipitation is going to be around an inch and thats conducive to downpours. Winter weather advisory until 1 00 p. M. In eastern massachusetts and south of the pike but goes all the way until 7 00 p. M. Points north of worcester because thats how long it could take to weed out icy spots and thats when it should be good and temperatures in boston 42, norwood 42 and look at lingering 30s in bedford and lawrence and especially nashua, keene, New Hampshire, worcester and orange and couple of spots where im worried that we might never get above freezing and refreezes and 40 and ends up being mostly cloudy day and Late Wednesday and early, early thursday and the rest of the week so 40 on average today, of course, inland, temperatures a little bit cooler and tomorrow mostly cloudy and 44 and thursday morning rain drops and 48 and clearing and nice dry weather new years eve temperatures in the 30s and friday and saturday 30s and cooler into sunday. Sara, daniel, back to you. Sara back behind bars. Socalled affluenza teen was found after disappearing with his mom. To check on the conditions and look, i know youre a cow and all. Sara we are all big frozen fans and you guys dressed up as and everyone should let it go. Julie cant let the weather go yet. Shiri frosty icy forecast today and pretty bad travel conditions across massachusetts and New Hampshire straight through 10 00 this morning, we start to see slight improvements at noon time but we are still going to have icy patches into the evening commute. We will break down last spots to warm above freezing next. Daniel plus with ice coating the rails we are keeping delays we are is that coffee . Yea, its nespresso. I want in. Youre ready. This is a Storm Tracker weather alert. Sara now at 8 30, looking at live pictures from the driving camera this morning, we watched things go from bad to worse. Daniel Julie Grauert with whiching the roads and Storm Tracker weather meteorologist Kevin Lemanowicz joins us with shiri spear this money. Seeing a real mix out there. Kevin ice being Biggest Issue and a little bit of shoveling to do and couple reports via twitter following reports all morning and north out here and telling me snowy again in merrimac and tell by the blue snow and purple sleet and more snow for you in merrimac coming down lightly and wont accumulate very much but it is out there. Over to weymouth now and South Weymouth they had a little coating before the sleet started coming down and looks like it is about to changeover to rain and not far away in scituate, it has become rain and there in scituate it has been told it has been a little crunchy under foot and telling me that on twitter and make it better. Off to the west of there snow sleet to ice event, theres the and Southern New Hampshire and Research Works inland, temperatures arent responding quickly and north and west of 495 especially latemorning and ice and that, shiri, biggest concern. Shiri temperature so critical in the forecast and also tricky part of the forecast right now boston at 36 , we still got some of the burbs, lawrence 32, norwood 33 and parts of the city could still be below freezing and check out 20s into worcester, fitchburg, nashua, New Hampshire, portsmouth, New Hampshire still at 32 , so in particular across the interior where we have the 20s those are the spots and going to warm up the slowest and have the icy concerns into the afternoon, slippery out there now, even in boston, 36 yes but got slush and sleet on roads and mixed precipitation falling and New Hampshire, southern mass and heaviest rain will end about 1 00 this afternoon and things dont taper off until four to 7 00 p. M. And remaining drizzle busy morning for her checking out roads. Julie yes, it has been. Traffic maps to give an idea what you will see on the roads. Really theres nowhere we can hide from the weather that shiri and kevin have been telling us about 495 and 93 in andover, lowell, chelmsford, as you could see we have one accident 495 north shore before 125 in haverhill and six, seven accidents at one point and avoiding the area all together. Right at atlantic avenue right after you pass through the cloverleaf and live look through brighton, volume light right now, and leave a lot of space in front of you and 24 from 123 to 128 and 30 minutes on pike from 495 to mass ave and 33 minutes on 93 south from 495 to the leverett connector. Sara and daniel, back to you. This morning because of the weather. Fox25 live outside south station in boston and keeping eye on rails this morning, christine. Christine thats right, commuters coming and going right outside the south station and we have just learned about a green line sea branch train that was disabled over in washington square. Red line issues because of cold switch because ice now resolved and slushy sloppy freeze right outside south station in the heart of boston here and some commuters and happy to trade the driving for the t. I expect this year not as much snow as last year throughout at least 95 of the delays. Christine we are told they were getting ahold of those and make sure they were able to get to work as soon as possible. Again, official urging drivers to stay off the messy roads and use the t because they say they have faith that the t has made quite a few investments and changes this time around and be able to handle any weather. Live at south station. Worcester. Crews clearing out a little bit of snow that was already sticking. Fox25 Jessica Reyes is on webster street in worcester for us this morning. It opened about an hour ago. Jessica lock at the sign, see there, they are covered in ice melt and spoke about an hour ago and says that they have had quite a bit of ice melt and biggest concerns is it is so hill and he when roads ice up it is a bit of a problem here went inside the store a couple of hours ago. Said couple of shovels and things like that. They have had a couple of customers here today this morning, some last minute shoppers, but really the big rush was yesterday. Now, the roads here, they have been a bit slippery, been getting a bit better but look at what they have to say. Sold awful lot of ice melt especially driveways and especially after last winter i think everyone was a little bit nervous. Jessica look at webster street in worcester and last conditions are not as bad as they were earlier this morning around 5 00 and does seem as though the precipitation changed over to rain and wash away a little bit of snow, more drivers out on the roads this morning and certainly some plows as well, so we will check back with you guys in another 30 minutes, but for now live here in worcester, im Jessica Reyes, fox25 news. Sara while it is mostly ice and rain in worcester where jess is, it is still snow nelowell. Thats where we find Catherine Parrotta live on Central Street this morning. Good morning. Catherine seems to have lightened up but here we are on Central Street, cars out and about, people out and about, very messy conditions, here on Central Street, look at top at intersection with merrimac and see the layer of slush, it is really, really starting to stack up on the streets here. Right now, also pretreated the roads with salt last night and Lowell Police tweeted out yesterday making sure they left time to clear off cars this morning and build extra time for their commute as well. In terms of how it is Walking Around the city, i can tell you the sidewalks are snow covered, might want to wear some boots here today, but in terms of what the conditions are like, what the snow is like, want you to defer to experts, saw people out shoveling here this morning and what one of them said this morning. A lot of sanding. Catherine this is the first wintery weather of the season we are seeing so far, so some people might not be too thrilled about that and, however, a lot of kids might wake up with smiles and School Valley ski area week but one good thing today, dont need to worry about school buss and kids in the conditions but might want to get out there and play in some of the snow anyway, and keep eye on conditions here and interesting snow attire that we encountered this morning. Again, coming up next half hour, live in lowell, Catherine Parrotta, fox25 news. Daniel stay with fox25 all morning long and forecast with the fox25 weather app where you will find very latest radar and storm track in i time it is free to download through the app store and google play. Kevin . Kevin rain creeps inland southcoast it is going to be falling into area below freezing north and west of boston especially and going to have freezing rain or glaze of ice thats going to form, scene that happened in few locations already, and, of course, sleet out there as well and live Storm Tracker radar showing mostly rain boston and southward, but the mixing continuing off to the north and west. Shiri and i are backtracking minutebyminute coming up. Daniel still to come sara announcer one candidate tough enough to take on the bully. Julie good morning, Michael Henrich has been riding he tweeted out three and four cars off the road in the past 4 miles in topsfield, flashing lights and another car in the center of the road, and this is something we have been seeing all morning because of the weather and getting some sort of rain, slush, sleet, whatever it is and thats where shiri is coming in and take you to accidents i have been watching. 93 northbound i have accident on atlantic avenue and another one on 128 southbound right before route 3. As we shift south average speed expressway 34 Miles Per Hour see how wet the road is and look in the corner of the screen, a tow truck off to the side and waiting for something to happen. So if youre heading out the door be prepared and live drive times, 33 minutes on the pike from 495 to mass ave, 14 minutes on the expressway from the braintree split to the pike and 34 minutes on 93 south from 495 to the leverett connector and lemanowicz joining us now and something i heard from lots of people they each say pike is the worst. No 495 is the worst. It is the expressway. Daniel . Kevin rain across and snow in the blue sleet in the purple and in peach and problem where it is peach and orange in color, thats where the temperatures are below freezing and rain falling into the freezing air and freezing in contact and ran situation in boston through quincy, braintree, southward to scituate, plymouth and cape cod and up close what it looks like reports of rain as far to the west in franklin and bellingham and sharon seeing sleet mixing in and brighter colors are showing and sometimes heavy rain and can get mixing and so what we we call branding on radar and that radar being back and shows brighter color, thats the sleet that youre seeing in sharon and it was tweeted so i know it is happening out there. Quincy rain happening right now and sleet mixing in, mostly rain if not totally rain downtown and north shore through gloucester, manchester but the sea and georgetown in merrimac and sleet mixing with snow and same thing through southern vermont and Southern New Hampshire and still icy conditions go right through the morning, shiri, this not that. Shiri breakdown pictures i have been getting from you guys on twitter this morning and send to me on fox25 shiri, love to see what we are seeing, West Bridgewater 6 30 and changing and sleet and rain, trend that will obviously continue from East Bridgewater and in amesbury this morning and send reports to kevin as well and four inches of snow and sleet and townsend and situation where ground situation close to freezing, and in and around the boston area, look at trace amounts and worcester hills, and one, two, three hundred tenth of inch of ice and going to create pretty dangerous roadways, so even though forecasting high of 38 in framingham, 39 in lawrence, which is above freezing and 42 in boston and 42 in norwood, that can happen pretty late this afternoon and that 35 in worcester and orange and 34 in keene and manchester, New Hampshire consider it if we are just three inches sort of that, we are going to be freezing all afternoon and going for some icy spots. Tonight we are back into the 20s and 30s, tomorrow we got a high about 40. Tomorrow the clouds will thicken up, im going with partly to mostly cloudy forecast. Overnight we have rain showers focused across southeastern massachusetts, that will extend into early on thursday, then thursday dries out and, of course, thats the last day of the year, we are going to have a nice quiet new years eve with temperatures in the 30s if youre out in the evening, high of 44 to start the new year on friday with just a couple friday and saturday flurries, drying a little bit cooler sunday into monday.
