El nino is forecast to gradually weaken as we head into spring, but does that mean the weather will calm down, or is the commonwealth in line for more active weather . I take a closer look at whats ahead in this special report. 571 04 godzilla el nino. No, its not exactly a giant monster parading through downtown roanoke, but it has sparked some wild weather in southwest virginia from historic flooding to record heat to crippling winter storms. Predicting whats next is no easy task, but im going to give it a shot. Since climatologists began measuring the temperatures of the Pacific Ocean in 1950, only two el ninos have lived up to the strength of godzilla the 8283 el nino and the 9798 el nino. All three of these monster el ninos have led to one thing in virginia a lot of moisture. El nino often splits the jet stream into two branches the subtropical jet to the south and the polar jet to the north. When the moisture of the subtropical jet meshes with the cold air from the polar jet, strong storms wallop southwest virginia with either snow or rain depending on the season. Quote during the height of this current el nino, virginia has averaged just shy of 40 inches of water which is nearly 8 inches above average. The strong el ninos of the 80s and 90s also had a large surplus of moisture. So does that mean more snow and out winter and head into spring . No heres why. El nino is forecast to weaken through march, april, and may. While conditions are forecast to stay fairly wet in march, history shows us that conditions directly after the previous strong el ninos have been exceptionally dry in virginia. I predict it will be an abnormally dry start to the growing season in southwest virginia, especially in april and may. So what type of temperatures can we expect . Well, the determining factor may not have anything to do with el nino. We can get a better idea of what temperatures we will see by taking a look at a pair of smaller scale circulations the north atlantic oscillation and the arctic oscillation, more commonly known as the polar vortex. When both of these measurements are positive, the jet stream bottles up cold air to our north. A couple of months ago, we predicted the positive nao would lead to an unusually mild start to winter. Well as it turns out, virginia experienced the warmest december since records began in 1895. A short time later, the weather pattern completely flipped. Just two weeks after the nao turned negative, over a foot of snow fell on southwest virginia. When these oscillations once again turned negative in the middle of february, temperatures in southwest virginia plummeted to the single digits. Over the next two weeks, the arctic oscillation is projected to stay negative, but the north atlantic oscillation is forecast to be positive. Its sort of a middle of the road, tough to call forecast. Ultimately, these circulations arent as reliable in the long term as the el nino pattern. You can carry it as a forecast tool out 36 months to the longer extent than you could with the smaller scale circulations. History tells us we will most likely experience a slightly warmer than average spring. With Severe Weather on our minds, im sure many our wondering if well see more of what we saw yesterday. There may be some more active weather in march, but that potential for a dry april and may does point to less of a coming up spring.
