Dozens of homes damaged at this hour after a devestating storm moved through parts of our area. And all of this devestation centered around the evergreen area in appomattox county. We have Live Team Coverage of the powerful storm that swept through our area this afternoon. Lets take a look at some of that video from earlier today to show you some more of that damage. The video you see now is a mobile home that was destoryed by the storm. Bill you spoke with people who survived this storm what are they saying . Travell and becky,a lot of these people very shaken up but they tell us they feel very lucky. Some heard the warnings on tv, others got alerts on their phones many figured it just be a strong storm but nothing that would destroy homes. Heres what it looked like when we got here before sunset. Dozens of homes along route 460 damaged. Some had parts of the roof missing, others had walls ripped away. Theres a lot of utility poles and power lines down across the area. As rescue crews from throughout the region raced to the scene we saw neighbors families search through their damaged homes. One woman told me she ran outside and held onto a big tree in a ditch as the storm blew away her mobile home. Things were hitting me in my back. I felt a tree or limb hit me in my head. I guess it was it may have been part of the house. I didnt see it till i was holding on for dear life. I could see the dirt and debris just circling and funneling and i knew wen i saw the debris flying that it was over. I put her in the bathroom in the shower and i went in there on the floor in be shower. By the time i got in the bathroom it just come up on the house. As you can see those people just there are a number of homes and businesses still in the dark after the storm rolled through. This is a live look at the outage map on aeps website. You can see hundreds of people are still without power at this hour county and more than 700 in Patrick County and nearly 700 in henry county. We will keep you updated tomorrow morning on good day virginia. Around the commonwealth todays storm killed three people including a 2yearold boy. Investigators say the baby and two men were tossed from thier mobile home just before 3 oclock this afternoon in the town of waverly near richmond. Their mobile home was destroyed in the storm. All three were found about 300 yards from the home. Desmond gardner witness it is tragic man i never seen nothing like this before i lost a good friend in the storm and my prayers go out to their family. The bodies were taken to the medical Examiners Office in norfolk for positive identification. 4 other buildings in waverly were destroyed. And were not the only ones hit by this devestating storm. Look at this video out of North Carolina in charlotte. The storm bringing heavy rain and high winds lines. And leaving thousands without power. Tornadoes across the south claiming the lives of at least three people one confirmed death in mississippi and two in louisiana and injuring dozens more. Police have identified the man who was found dead inside of his home yesterday afternoon in the 500 block of Westwood Road northwest. Police are still investigating martavious rashad cooks cause of death. No arrests have been made. But the investigation is ongoing. In Pittsylvania County a former jail employee has been indicted for having a sexual relationship with a jail inmate. 49yearold sharon mckensie is facing 3 feloniy charges. Investigators say she worked in the pittsylvania was arrested last week and released on bond. Her next court appearence is set for march 3rd. In botetourt countythe Group Pushing to stop two historic slave dwellings from being relocated say they are planning another protest at the site tomorrow morning. A representative from the friends of greenfield preston Plantation Group says the countys actions during the past few days prompted the protest. The group made a proposal to the county that would allow the buildings to stay at their original location. There is a Group Leading the charge to make sure the roanokes black history is persevered and presented to the masses. Tunr to 1 shottonight we go inside of the Harrison Museum to learn more about the achievements and struggles of roanokes black residents during the 18hundreds. 3243 its roanoke history, hanging on a wall. The exhibits inside the Harrison Museum tells the story of black men and women who helped build up their community during the most difficult times. The black History Museum was founded in 1985 and depends on the help of volunteers to operate. Its always been about people who volunteer who understood it was important to maintain historycharles price is one of about 100 volunteers who give their time to make sure roanokes black history is on display and preserved. Its not a job its a responsibility to help bring forth history. In the late 18hundreds roanokes black community was made up of professionals and medical pioneers who worked to improve the standard of living in the historically black gainsboro community. It was doctors and educators roanoke at one time was the largest area west of richmond thus it had a large group of professional people. This display highlights the name of the men who became the first and only africanamerican life saving crew in the nation. The city to help prevent accidents, teach safety, give firstaid training to the African American community. At the time that it started the individuals were doing it out of necessity. Did they know it was the first one of color in the state of va as well as the nation . Roanokes black residents depended on the life saving crew because blacks were not allowed in white hospitals. Black patients were treated inside private homes. But the black community became feed up with lack of access to medical careafter pioneering, black, dr. Issac David Burrell was turned away from the hospital for whites. Dr burrel had gallstones and was denied treatment at the local hospital and and to be transferred to dc for treatment but passed away. His death lead to the creation of the Burrell Memorial Hospital in 1915it was named in his honor. The black community finally had a hospital of its own. The building is now a historical landmark and home to blue ridge behavioral health.
