It would have cost taxpayers 1. 6 million to keep neurosurgery inhouse and additional 4 million to 7 million to send patients outside the va. But emails show the hospital faced a large budget deficit. In february of 2015, staff was told by the regional director to find ways to improve operations and efficiency. He called an emergency meeting at 7 30 p. M. With the surgeons and according and whistleblowers say other services were hit too.
