As Dominique Ricks reports, theres a new way that bacteria is causing it. Reporter what he said. Until now that was the only species of bacteria believed to call lyme disease in the u. S. We have assumed that theres always been more than one species that causes this illness in this country. Reporter the new lead comes from minnesotas mayo clinic. Researchers analyzed dna from abnormal specimens and found six cases out of 100,000. It doesnt mean there wont reporter the new species seems to be geographically restricted but you shouldnt let your guard down. The tick exists in a large section of the country. So it has the potential to be in other parts of the country. So people need to recognize this. Reporter the symptoms are very similar to the original strain except patients may experience vomiting, nausea and feelike symptoms. But there is good news here. The new strain known as maonie is treated the same way. Looking at the big picture, the new findings can help the medical world understand how diseases are spread.
