As a mother, you hear these day care Horror Stories and pray it doesnt happen to your children. The fact of the matter is the employee who was supposed to be watching these children wasnt doing her job at the time. Reporter deputies say 23 yearold casey burke failed to properly care for the children. The arrest report says the kids were napping while burke should have been watching. Instead, she talked to colleagues and ate lunch. At one point, she heard crying neglect which is a felony. We went to the day care looking for answers. But they didnt want to talk. Im not going to talk about it. Reporter 8 on your side went digging into records and found since december, the day care was cited twice for improperly supervising children. The department of children and families is steping in saying in a statement what happened to this child is absolutely unacceptable. We are conducting a child care attorney. Burke no longer works at this facility. We are told the boy that bit this other child no longer attends here either. Jen . John, just listening to the story, im sure a lot of parents are concerned. Are there ways they can check on the history of a day care like you did that they may be interested in . Well, the fangs are out in a debate over the new animal abuse registry in Hillsborough County. You would think passing an ordinance designed to help animals would be all warm and fuzzy. But, as Senior Investigative reporter Steve Andrews reminds Hillsborough County we are talking about. Reporter thats right keith. An animal abuse registry sounds great. County commissioners are busting their buttons over this one. But, and a big but, critics say this wont save one animal from abuse. Animal abuse stories haunt our headlines. The county created an animal abuse registry. It requires people convicted of abusing animals to register prohibits them adopting in the future. It requires buyers in pet stores to sign and affidavit that they are not on the registry. When we talk about an affidavit at the pet store, that animal is already out the door, already abused. It doesnt matter if they sign a piece of paper or not. Reporter anna think it is ordinance needs more work. Thats when the fangs came out. There were accusations that forward. This is hoardly a political ploy. Reporter commissioner Kevin Beckner is behind the registry. He claims the Animal Advisory Committee wants to rewrite it to get the credit. I think there are a couple of members that probably have other intentions and so, we cant deal with politics and ego that sits on the aac board. If we want to talk about this being a political thing, then we need to ask commissioner beckner why he chose a secret committee. Reporter hillsborough already has a not allowed to own animals. When you are supposed to be the voice of animals. Earlier this year, 8 on your side revealed that list had not been updated in two years. If you cant maintain one, you cant maintain the other. Reporter the Sheriffs Office and Code Enforcement will track done those who dont register. Code enforcement will handle these like code complaints. Really . 8 on your side exposed the countys inability or code violators to run up hundreds of thousands in fines. That is an example of how they dont do their job and we will throw something more on top of them . Okay. Now, regarding that secret committee allegation, commissioner beckner did form a committee which basically wrote the ordinance before the Animal Advisory Committee even got to see it so i think they are a little ticked about that. Reporter the county used to spray periodically. But then they stopped showing up and residents couldnt get a straight answer. What is it like . Its terrible. It is a depleting feeling.
