Walmart employees who stopped a shoplifter are now part of a criminal investigation. Just today, we learned that the shoplifters death has been ruled a homicide. Josh thomas is live in lakeland. So josh, what happened here . Reporter well, quite frankly, its under investigation. But we can tell you that the shoplifting incident did happen this past sunday outside this walmart in lakeland. And tonight, as you mentioned, Lakeland Police are working a Homicide Investigation and quite frankly, it could lead to charges against those walmart employees. The 64yearold died less than 12 hours after being chased by walmart security. Worth of dvds from the store. At some point, his pants caused him to fall. And he fell to the ground. He was apprehended and taken into custody. Shortly there after, they noticed he wasnt breathing and thats when they began cpr. Reporter he was rushed to the hospital but died hours later. The medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide after the autopsy revealed he did not die from a previous heart condition like a heart attack. He didnt deserve to die. Reporter he told me Loss Prevention officers have strict comes to catching shoplifters. Them. Theyre supposed to go out there and try to stop them but not supposed to use any kind of force at all to stop them. You know, if they get away, they leave. Theyre not supposed to chase them. Reporter but that is apparently not what happened outside this walmart. Walmart corporate officials involved in the incident have been suspended pending the investigation as we continue to learn all of the details. Is it possible somebody is going to be charged here . Im not going to speculate because i dont have all the facts. I know they are continuing to do interviews and talk with walmart employees and any additional witnesses. Reporter now we still dont know what he died from, that has not been released by the medical examiner but because the death did happen during a crime, police have to treat it as a homicide. Well, we actually got a list of the calls for service to club rain from the Tampa Police Department today and we discovered that they have been called there multiple times over the past year for everything from guns to weapons. I also found out that in march of last year, the Tampa Fire Department had to shut down of large crowds. And those crowds there this weekend could have been a big factor in what turned into a deadly night out.
