Deputy john kotfila was the latest driver killed in a wrong way crash. The driver who caused the accident, erik mcbeth, also died. Now the question is what more can be done to prevent the epidemic of wrongway crashes and deaths in the bay area. It is a question we posed again and again in the past and these incidents keep happening, this very latest claiming the life of a beloved member of Law Enforcement. She told me that is the talk around the Sheriffs Office. Obviously its only a matter of time. These deputies patrol 24 7 the very same roadways where were seeing these motorists drive the wrong way. Flashing lights and barricades c tying along town center boulevard in bran driving along town center boulevard in brandon, it would be very hard, if not impossible, to not notice the selmon expressway ramp is closed to westbound traffic just like early saturday morning. Despite these warnings Authorities Say mcbeth could have driven up this exit ramp. We reversed this video of our drive in to show you the possible path mcbeth took before colliding with deputy kotfilas patrol car head on. It could have been his car. It could have been anyone elses car. Reporter at this time of night its possible the deputy didnt spot the wrongway drive until it was too late. This is the second wrongway incident this week alone. Earlier this week motorists spot 20yearold derek wayne 301. Road. Hes on the other side of the road. Collision. Theres a few cars, im a few cars away from him, but i can see he almost hit somebody head on. Reporter deputies were able to stop the driver with stop sticks and a pit maneuver before anyone was injured. In the last eight years alone 57 wrongway crashes have happened in the area with all of the warning signs and signals up and running at the time of this crash, what else can be done to stop this problem . We dont know if this crash was alcohol related, but sheriff david gee believes drivers on the whole need to be more responsible. If we dont have responsible things are going to happen. It traced lukes remains to one of the graves marked unknown. Last year those graves were exhumed. Luke was one of the first to be identified.
