And five. Give to it tarean. Not much. Theres justin yoon warming up on the side lines. You want a conservative call that gives you an opportunity. You dont want you would like to take shot at converting the touchdown. Dan how gref do you get . This is letting the clock run and well call a timeout probably. Dan so that stops the clock with 2 11 left. Rivalry. When notre dame was number one. It goes right down to the wire. Dan it is still fun football. Doug miami taking the lead. 27 unanswered points. Then you get up off the mat and tie it up. So many momentum swings. Now you come down to a third and three situations well. Dan not as much at stake obviously but notre dame needs to win four of the last five games to be bowl eligible. So they drop this one. They have to run the table or theyll be without it for the first time in the brian kelly era. Then you have mark richt who lost three in a row. He spent 15 years in georgia. Never in his playing career, his assistant coaching career, and his head coaching career at that was it. So this is uncharted territory for a guy like richt. Trying to snap the threegame losing streak. Third and three. I say it is a quarterback run. Dan he fumbles it it appeared miami was on top of it. It could have squirted out from there but it sure looked like miami had it. Doug and it is first down yardage if it were to be notre dan no indications yet with the officials. Notre dames football. Terence smythe got a little greedy there is where it is not cleanly behind him. Dan so that ball was loose. Was that kizer who finally got it . Doug it would not surprise me if he got in there and got it. I complain about this all the time. Protect it from 99 yards. Reach out for the ball down by the 1 yard line. You look at the first look. I would have liked to have looked how close he was. Was there a possibility . Doug he is probably a foot short of the goal line when that ball came out. Dan so the penalty moves it to the one yard line. Doug miami has two timeouts. Do you just hammer the football or do you go for the chock a little . Dan spoken like a guy who has done this a few times. This is your time, doug. You love this stuff. Doug if i only had one timeout dan if you kick it. Doug it is under a minute to go. With two timeouts, there will be a minute even with the third, check that, the clock is running now so it would probably be 45 seconds. Good job running dan not only do you get the fiveyard penalty back to the six. You stop the clock where you could have wasted another 10 to 14 seconds. Dan was that on mcglinchey . Referee a fiveyard penalty. The clock will start on the snap. Dan so that changes things a plenty of opportunities to get ball to the end zone. Dan a field goal attempt. Doug now you run the ball three times. Get it under a minute and kick the field goal. Dan so to give to it adams. A very short gain. Second and goal. Chad thomas on the stop. By the way, kizer was those are the kinds of things that you havent seen go notre dames way this season. Miami takes the timeout. And it is exactly what brian kelly has been talking about. He showed his team some examples. Little examples of things they he showed examples of things they didnt do right. Just the difference between winning five games that were close no 2012 and losing all five games this year within 8 points. Ithe margin of error is to split the wide receiver on the route. Having to give it over to the other team. The procedure called the wrong situation. Who knows . This could lead to a could have been easy touchdowns. So there are all these little minute factors. I remember the undefeated season. Pittsburgh iced the game. They had a few breaks go their way. They got it on the fumble. Dan so the ball at the five yard line. Second and goal. Josh adams still in there. He is down. Close to the 2 yard line. Third and goal. Doug this is the mode that i clock as much as possible. Dan he takes his final timeout. Doug so youll take another 30 to 40 seconds off the clock. That should leave about 30 seconds on the clock for miami to respond. Assuming it goes through. Weve seen quite a few balls hit uprights this year. Dan yes, we about miami. We can talk about the fsu game, the Florida State game. Dan that started the threegame spiral for miami. You look at justin yoon who is nervously pacing the side lines. Doug theyve had a history as you look at the first year coach in recent years of starting out great. Losing the Florida State game. Since then its all gone downhill for richt and the cages. Doug this is not a nervous situation. They take their time to line up and kick a short field goal. Things have not gone their way. Theres so much discussion. Theyre going to analyze it and justin yoon will sit there and think about it as long as possible. Or theyre giving him a lot of time to think about it. Doug somebody busts through. Doug from miamis standpoint, theyre thinking, get them out of bounds. Dan third and goal. The ball is i know. Doug do not be reaching out with the football. Go talk on Durham Smythe a few plays ago. Dan he took it like a loaf of bread. High up in the air. Doug all of a sudden, instincts take over where he wants to reach. Miami has to be eyeing the clock. And kickoff until youre under 30 seconds. Dan coming in that 40yard field goal that he made in the hurricane conditions of North Carolina state. That might be the best hes made doug i dont understand that. The delay. Five yards can make a big difference on a ball thats headed in. Sometimes the angle might be tricky but this is toward field. The other aspect is notre dame has time outs. Call dan this might be the most comfortable position for yoon. I dont know if there is a lot of, again. Just speculating. A lot of practice kicks. He feels more comfortable with his 23yard field goal attempt. Which could potentially win the game for notre dame. Is this the game that they finally break through on the final possession to win it . Instead of let it slip away . Justin yoon with the 23yard field goal. After they bakd him up a little bit. Special teams have been the achilles heel all day. Notre dame has to kick off. And cover that kick. The athletesee notre dame, i would guess, 45 yard line to line up and have a shot at the 67 yarder. Ive seen him hit the 53 yarders. He got one of the biggest legs as we mentioned earlier. Two field goals named previously at 53 and 48. Position to at least tie it up. Doug the kickoff return is the scariest play of all from a defensive standpoint. This isser what good athlete in space can hit the crease. Dan early in the first quarter, notre dame had it josh adams went 42 yards for the touchdown and with 30 seconds left, justin yoon who is kicking off, gives notre dame the lead 3027. Miami will take its chances from the 25. Dan 75 yards away with no timeouts. A field goal kicker that can doug 34 yards. If they can get to the 45, i would say hell attempt something from 63 and in. Dan hes had kicks this year that have been good for 60 plus. Doug only 30 yards away in 30 seconds. To have the opportunity. Get it in position. There is a nice gain. By malcolm lewis. Stops the clock. Just six seconds off of it. And a gain of 14. Doug 14 yards in six seconds. You play soft coverage. Those little out routes are 5 to 10 yards. Another decent gain. So miami doing what they needed to do. Theyre about ten yards away from having the opportunity to at least line up and try something. No timeouts for miami. Kaaya. No big deal, doug no big deal. The thing that ends the game for miami is a quarterback sack or a tackle behind the first down marker in the field of play. Pretty soon you have time to go up because of blocked stops. Spike the ball and then line up. The whole field is still in play. It is not just the boundary. They only have 13 seconds to do it. Kaaya, near side. Weve got whistles. A timeout called by notre dame. Nine seconds left. Doug notre dame referee timeout. An to 13 to reset it because notre dame called the timeout before the game happened. And theres michael badgley. He was the guy who had the extra point in the big game against the seminoles. Hes had a couple of blocked field goals chug the blocked point after that cost him a chance against Florida State. Doug the theory on that was sometimes he tries to drive the hurry. And the guys have an opportunity to put just some penetration, maybe even a hand on. Boy, it comes off his foot. So 7 for 10 on the year in field goals. Two of the three hes missed have been blocked. But he has a big leg. He needs more yardage on third down and two for miami. Doug at least ten yards. Dan around that 40 yard line. Now down goes kaaya at the worst time possible. And the clock rolling. It will run out and notre dame is going to escape with a sack on kaaya the threegame home losing streak is history and the irish do indeed finally figure out how doug the pressure by the front all day long that gave miami fits offensively. It was a sack that finally sealed the deal for notre dame. That situation as a quarterback, you have to get it out of your hand if at all possible. Hes trying to make the play. The clock is running and nothing miami can do. Dan so in the end we saw so many plays like that in the first this one by nyles morgan on kaaya which ends the game. And Deshone Kizer and notre dame escape with a w. Kathryn how did you find a way to pull through this one . Well, we knew there would be adversity and we havent been able to respond. And i told them on friday at this stadium, i said, it will happen again and were going to with all the adversity, that they respond asked they got through it. I knew we would get through it. Tonight was the night they got through it. Theyll win a lot of game for a long time. Kathryn what was the final key . We must haved the punt and they did not lose their composu composure. They came back with 10 unanswered points at the end. Those are the scars of five losses by one possession. Came back here and won a football game. Kathryn very much. Dan . Dan that sums it up. It has been a long time in coming. As we listen to the alma mater for the first time in a while. It is a win feeling in that end zone in front of the Notre Dame Dan across the world, theyve waited a long time for this one. A home victory for the first the season. The defense played a big part of it. We send you down to kathryn. Kathryn a big part of that defense was jarron. What did you notice that allowed to you make so many negative plays . I couldnt hear you. Kathryn what did you notice allowed to you make so many negative plays on defense . I just had to get penetration to the best of my ability and make plays. Kathryn how would you describe what this game was like to play in . It went times and it came down to the final minute. It was awesome to be a part of. Thats what a rivalry is. Notre dame versus miami. We had to fight until the very end. I was able to pull out the win. Your coach said this team was so close to getting a bin big. What does this do for your program . It gifts lifts us up in a bi. We have to keep pushing. Keep moving. A huge game for the notre dame defense. Five sacks. One you saw there from jarron. 12 tackles for losses. He had 12 of the tackles for losses for the irish defense. So smiles on the faces of notre dame. And im sure it is a relieved and happy Deshone Kizer. Kathryn indeed. How much of a relief was this for you . It is like this whole stadium is off my contrary to belief. The last couple games havent gone the way we wanted to. To come out and do this today was awesome. There was a little lull in the second half. A couple of recoveries and a win. Kathryn what can you say about the defense, helping you out on the offensive side of the ball . This is the team we know. The way we made in the first half of the offense, throwing did and having the defense complement us is who we are and who we wanted to be this whole season. If we can get that throughout the game. Too many games have come down to the last touchdowns. Well make sure we pick that up. Kathryn speaking of that, how did you manage to get that ball on the fumble . I turned away to the crowd. As i turned, i just saw the ball flying over. It went through three miami guys hands and i kathryn all right. Congratulations. Thanks so much. Dan thank you. In our conversation with deshone yesterday, he said never in his entire athletic career, little league, middle school, has he ever had a losing season. You could see it weighing on him. So this was a huge win for team. Doug it has to feel like the weight of the world off his shoulders. You were anticipating the touchdown. Get your nose in there as a quarterback. A lot of quarterbacks would stand back and watch. He got in there. Got into the mix. Came out and saved the game for notre dame. At least in regulation, saved the game. A fantastic effort. I think it was the running game that came around late. And josh adams, they took some of the pressure off his shoulders. Those rushing yards. 148. It was a great effort by miami with 27 unanswered points to get back into it. Kelly alluded to the fact of his speech after practice on friday with kathryn. We were there and we heard him talk about it. He said you guys will face adversity against miami. How will you deal with it . This time it needs to be was after losing the league, the first play of the drive. Kizer gets it down the side line for a big play. They initiated that drive that ends up in the end zone. It was a positive gain. It is so hard to regain confidence sometimes. That does it for your offense. Thats a big chunk. And they get it to the end zone. Dan kelly said, this is hes been telling us all year and hes been telling everybody out there, the notre dame faithful, once these guys, young guys playing on defense. Once this group wins. Theyre going to figure it out. Do you believe this team is set up for a good finale down season and into 2017 . Doug i believe so. Theyve been in every game one break one way or the other. Again. If they can continue, it is consistent. Special teams killed them tonight. Thats what needed to be cleaned up. Dan a big deal is that bowl eligible sixwin plateau. Notre dame gets a little closer but they have some work to make sure they get that extra month of practice which is so important for a young team to develop. So for brian kellys press conference.
