I knew that this was something completely unjust and immoral. What we discovered in an exclusive news channel 5 investigation, it just might shock you. We wanted to know why this is happening. Weve been doing some digging, and megan joins us now. Youve learned it comes down to tax breaks. Over donating them to schools. We look into who is making money and whos losing out. The value of a book is much greater than the price of its pages, and the value of a textbook or a Childrens Book can change the course of a Young Persons life. But these pristine books were meant to be shredded. I asked him about it and they are all being thrown away and they all have to go in the grinder. Was ordered to grind up thousands of mcgrawhill textbooks and Childrens Books over two months. I literally felt wrong for doing it. When he asked about instead donating books to local schools they let me know that there is a very tight contract that was written between the drop mcgrawhill and our company. They were saved, despite company policy. The rest destroyed. They were like, its a tax incentive. You make more money by going ahead and recycling these books than you would if you were to donate them to schools in need. Tax breaks for textbooks. I did my own research, and its possible. Tack experts tell me the tax write off can be substantially lighter than a donation right off. Unsold books can be considered obsolete products and are eligible for a 100 percent right off, percent of taxable income. It was appalling. Maybe appalling but perfectly legal. And out of this recycling plant, these books are more valuable. Paper towels, toilet paper, insulation. And Companies Get a bonus for going green. The only incentive they have it there is value for them. President dale roberts would not confirm whether his company has a contractit not up to them which items get shredded. You sign a contract with anybody. We sign a contract with the bookstore. Mcgrawhill did not respond to my repeated requests for an in person interview and did not confirm whether it had a contract with the local plant, but a spokesperson was eager to tell me that they donate whenever possible. Donated just in the last year. He said they recycle books that are damaged or when they are outofdate or have not been updated and could not otherwise be donated. So i took the outofdate books to a local preschool. I cant look at any of these and think that they are outdated. Many of her preschoolers have no real books of their own. It just really is incredible to me that they think that these are worth shredding. She says she understands the business, but it breaks heart and she wonders what a difference it would make for kids in my dinah and beyond. It is very sad, because we need books more than we need napkins. That employee has donated many of the books that he saved from the conveyor belt. He said one science classrooms even used some of the textbooks. The superintendent told me supplementary books like these would easily be accepted into school. Great news. Theres going to be plenty of opportunity for some of the younger Wide Receivers tonight. We will feature all prior at the wide receiver spot. A lot of injuries.
