In the race and continue to split the vet as trump racks up more wins. It appears at least one candidate is listening. Dr. Ben carson announced he sees no path forward, and he will not attend tomorrow nights debate indetroit. But marco rubio and our governor, john kasich, insist they are the ones the party should rally behind and try and dethrone trump. Lindsey graham says there can only be one alternative, and he doesnt even care who that is. We have between now and march 15th to test whether or not they have viability in their home states. But past march 15th we need the party to come together and see if we can find an alternative to mr. Trump, a more reliable republican. Senator graham added if trump does end up winning enough delegates he doesnt believe Party Leaders should strip it away from him come convention time. Tomorrow mitt romney will deliver a speech about the he has been highly critical of trump in recent days. Well see what happens. That criticism expected to be front and center when romney gives his speech tomorrow. Romney first started making headlines when he called on trump to release his tax returns, predicting there might be, quote, a bombshell revelation in those documents. And right now our Stephanie Ramos is live in washington. Stephanie, you have some more information on what romney is going to talk about tomorrow. Reporter exactly. Aus said, mitt romney expected to speak tomorrow at the university of utah. Dont expect any endorsements, but you can expect him to lay out a case against donald trump. Laying out a case for republicans to not vote for tom donl, not much of a surprise now but its basically in response to some republicans surrendering to the fact that donald trump might be the nominee so romney getting out in front saying this nominee fight is not over, it needs to be fought to the bitter end. Anybody catch trump at this point . Reporter well, its unclear right now. Trump has definitely pulled in strong numbers but he hasnt made it past that 50 threshold in the delegate count. So those that 0 pes a President Trump are going to try and keep him below that mark and fight it out at the convention. We turn to the other side of the aisle. Can you give us an update on where democrats stand today . Clinton add big night, but sanders not giving up. Reporter no, bernie person Bernie Sanders not giving up. Hillary clinton earlier found herself so far behind in the count in 2008 when she wasnt able to catch up. So Bernie Sanders is not giving up. He is staying in the race. He says at least until the Democratic NationalConvention Held in july. Thank you stephanie live in washington. Meantime, now as voters and more states head to the polls, there has been a lot of talk about delegates. Thats because a lot of folks dont realize were not actually voting for a candidate, were voting for delegates. Those delegates then vote for a candidate at the partys convention which as you know is in cleveland. In the gop, delegates are awarded two different ways. Theres the proportional method. Under that method if a candidate won 50 of the vote states delegates. But because their pop laitionz differ every state has a different number. Some states considered more valuable than others. Republicans also allow some states to go with a winner take all method. So the candidate who wins gets all of the delegates. And none of the winnertake all states has held a primary yet. They can only be held on or after march sai. Thats why trumps remaining ohio by the way, one of them, a state our governor heavily banking on. Our state has 66 delegates up for grabs. Thats right. Each party has a magic number of delegates needed to clinch the nomination. For republicans, that number is 1237. If no one reaches that number the result is a contested convention. John kosich is live from the newsroom to explain what that would mean for us in cleveland. All those delegates that the candidates are wing right now must vote for the candidate who won them on the first ballot. But if no candidate has the majority on that first ballot, all bets, all obligations are off. The q has played host to many memorable events. None, though, may compare to what awaits. That camp is strong for the establishment. Theyre looking for a way to stop him. At this point the only way is to deny trump the nomination at the convention. Denied a majority of the delegates which means Party Leaders getting behind different candidates in different states. Im going tore john im going for john kasich in ohio and marco rubio in florida. Theyre really at this point choosing which of the less bad scenarios to pursue. Another option thrown out will be to look at the delegates themselves, 73 of whom are picked by the parties, not the candidates. So theyre bound to vote for the president ial candidate on the first ballot. Theyre not bound to vote for the president ial candidate for russ issues, for credential challenges, for the Vice President ial nominee. The rules of the convention can change prior to the start of the convention. One change that really could requires candidates to get at least 50 of the delegates in eight states in order to have their name put into nomination. Thats going to change once we hit those winner take all states in two weeks. Right now no one has met that threshold. John, a lot to take in. That begs the question, how does all of this impact the future of the Republican Party . Were talking about what the party will look like tip years ahead. Ron regan joins us live in the newsroom. Ron, you have been talk with political experts. I spoke with dr. Michael bowen at John Carroll University who has written extensively on the Republican Party and conventions. Is the Republican Party headed to a breakup . Well, it certainly appears that way. Political experts say this years republican candidates are taking a long history of Party Factions and dissent to a new level. But weve never seen really before, the fights have always been between established republicans who have different views. Weve never seen someone come in from the outside and, for lack of a better term, disrupt the party. Its setting up for a fight here in cleveland at that time convention. A brokered convention is looking a lot, based on the super tuesday results with rubio picking up some delegates and a state and cruz winning three states, a brokered convention is looking a lot more likely. Reporter a brokered convention that could have serious consequences for republicans in the years ahead. It is going to be a very diminished organization, and its going to have to start basically from scratch, building its way back into being a majority a party capable of winning the majority. Reporter dr. Bone says a strict constitutionalist group will certainly be one of the groups that continues to be a part of the new Republican Party. Certainly could be one of the most interesting as you can see the road to the convention here in cleveland is complicated on many levels. Including the ongoing saga over which company will provide rental bikes for the con vehicles. Local Business Owners are already accusing Cleveland Police of rigging the bidding process in favor of a seattle company. Now weve learned theres a local option thats being completely ignored. I spoke to smeads defense attorney just a bit ago. He tells me that if convicted five years in prison and up to a 250,000 fine. Any time you are charged in federal court with a crime, its a serious state of affairs. Obviously to the extent that someone is charged with threatening the president of the United States, that makes it all the more serious. Reporter just days before the suspect made this call, allegedly made this call, agents say that he called a crisis hotline and threatened to commit suicide. Now smead appears back in federal court next wednesday. In the meantime he is behind bars. Live in cleveland, kristin volk, newschannel5. Thank you kristin.
