Good morning, everyone. These numbers are going to continue to rise. As im predicting 75 degrees will be our high in cleveland, of course the farther south you go, it could be a little warmer in areas like akron, canton, towards alliance. Lots of sunshine out there today. The clouds do build in, and as they do, they tell us a story. Weve got changes under way. Our clouds will precede our next rain chance for sunday. Cleveland heights are still searching for the robber who killed an employee at a popular Sandwich Shop. It happened just before 8 00 last night at this mr. Hero on south taylor road. Police say a suspect came in, demanding cash. That suspect eventually shot an employee in the head and then took off with the money from the Cash Register. The victim was taken to University Hospital and later died. The suspect has not been identified yet. And if you have any information, you are urged to call police. Well, another shooting to report as well. This time on clevelands 79th and carnegie. Two men were shot during a robbery. No word on their conditions this morning, but this is the same corner that an activist spent 48 hours camping out at earlier this week. His goal was to ironically raise awareness for violence in cleveland. Well, remember the story of a young ohio boy that went viral last month . A southwestern ohio deputy found that 7yearold trying to sell his stuffed animal to buy food. Now that boys mother is going to jail. Tammy bethel is sentenced to endangerment. Her husband also faces the same changes, but has not yet been sentenced because he is in the hospital. Also headed to prison, two chinese nationals who admit to stealing more than dislrs 1 million from goodyear. Both were employees within the company when they took 1. 5 million between 2013 and 2016. According to court documents, they committed fraud through a wire kickback scheme. Both have been ordered to pay back the money they stole. Goodyear says it is pleased the American Red Cross is putting out a plea for platelets this morning because the organization has had to cancel nearly 100 blood drives in areas hit hard by hurricane matthew. It is now running dangerously low on platelets. If youd like to help out, you can give blood at many local red cross locations. You can also make an appointment on their blood donor app. And platelets primarily go to Cancer Patients receiving treatment. And today the American Cancer Society is celebrating those thousands of local survivors and supporters are expected to be at todays making strides against Breast Cancer walk in akron. The 5k walk raises money for further cancer research. It starts at 10 00 at canal park. Well, one down, three to go for the indians. Called the shutoff scam, conartists posing as Power Company workers over the phone, threatening to shut off your electricity unless you pay up. Well, the illuminating Company Admits its a scam hitting northeast ohio and sweeping across the country. News 5 investigator joe paginakiis getting it out this morning. Its a Courtesy Call, hey, were going to be there and were shutting your power off. Reporter ken thought he was ge gettings a stern phone call from the illuminating company about his electric service. They said a truck was on their way and be here within the hour. Reporter a caller said an illuminating company crew was heading to his business and was going to cut his power at the meter. All right. Ill give the number a call. Reporter that is unless he called this 888 number and paid his balance immediately. They wanted a credit card in order to pay the bill, and i told them, well, im not going to pay the which will. Reporter now, ken, admits at one point he was behind and did get this shutoff notice, but i told them i had just paid the bill three weeks ago. Off. I said i have proof that i paid it. Reporter finally the caller hung up. Turns out the whole thing was a scam, a con job the illuminating admits is sweeping the country, so much so a warning is now posted on the website. Business owner mark king believes Power Companies should do more to protect consumers. You think the Power Companies would be more kind to fix it and find out whos doing it. Reporter fortunately king and ken didnt fall for the scam. You see, they have more than 30 experience and teach concealed Carry Courses here at the memphis avenue location. A crewmember opens the top of that cage and the shark then eventually finds its way and thrashing out of the cage. Through all of this, the diver somehow made his way out of the bottom of the cage until the shark could make its way out as well, and then he just swims back up to the top of the cage and climbs out of the boat. I kind of hold it against our producer dana for putting this in the show because i am deathly afraid no, nick. That just is beyond terrifying to me. I know. Again, though, with all the food and tuna around that cage, you kind of wonder if thats exactly what they expected to happen, but, man. Im having second thoughts about doing that. Transportation department now issuing an emergency order banning those phones from flights all together. And speaking of flights, new controversy for the Airline Carrier delta after an African American doctor claims she was passed over by crewmembers during a medical emergency. Tamika cross who is an ob gyn who posted on a recent flight, an attendant yelled for a a passenger in need, but after raising her hand, she was told, quote, put your hand down, we are looking for actual first physicians or nurses, we dont have time to talk to you. Cross adds she tried to help a second time. A crew member then told her, a white male could help because he had credentials. Delta is responding by saying that male doctor who helped is the only doctor who provided credentials which they are trained to collect. Now, for her part, cross post is now prompting other black doctors to tweet pictures of themselves in solidarity with the hashtag what a doctor looks like. This morning the community of Cleveland Heights is shaken. An employee at a popular sandwich shot was shot and killed during a robbery last night. Police are still searching for the suspect this morning. Investigators say a robber entered the mr. Hero on south taylor road around 8 00 last night. The suspect then demanded cash and then shot the employee head. Then that suspect grabbed money from the Cash Register and ran away. The employee died at University Hospital. The suspect has not been identified yet. If you have any information, please call police immediately. Well, ohios secretary of state looking into allegations of voters who were included in this years voter purge. Tens of thousands of registered voters were deleted from the states rolls. Its possible many of them didnt even know they were removed. Secretary jo hes asking these voters be allowed to cast provisional ballots on election day. The judge has yet to rule on that request. Imagine a suspected murderer hiding right under your childs bed. Well, that chilling scenario played out on clevelands west side. U. S. Marshals found that man, Jonathan Vargas inside an eve avenue home. They had been looking for him since august. Thats when they say he forced his way into his ex girlfriends home and shot and killed julio perez. And also this morning, were involved admitted they have involved or knew about child enticement this week. You first heard from the 8year old they tried to lure thursday on news 5. She says an suv kept driving around the block and at one point asked her if she wanted candy. She said no. That suv came back again. Police now talking to the prosecutor about possible charges against those three teens. And right now a 12year old columbus boy is recovering from a bullet wound to the shoulder. Now he jaquan curry was shot in a drive by at Linden Mckinley s. T. E. M. Academy. Its liability his injuries would have been a lot worse if it wasnt for his backpack. The book bag saved me. Im blessed that my grandson was at school with a backpack on his back to bring homework home. Its a blessing. It was ridiculous that someone would drive by a School Shooting at random kids coming from school. Yeah, hard to believe this could happen at a school. Well, this is all that remains, thats left of a home after it exploded in port clinton yesterday. A neighbor says the blast was so powerful his windows blew out. The blast blew debris for several blocks as well. A neighbor described the scene as a war zone. Flames were coming up the side of the mans head. He was kind of hysterical. I took a piece diverted the flames, and then kind of drug him out. Amazing no serious injuries. That man and woman were flown to a hospital. One house caught fire from burning debris and the explosion even pushed houses a quarter mile away right off their foundations. Clouds will begin to build on the latter half of the day, and that kind of tells the story of whats coming up next. So as ive been saying all morning long, weve been getting this influx of warmer air from the southeast. Thats helping to bring us into the mid70s. Now, a cold front thats approaching now, remember, difference between the air masses. We have the cold air behind the front, the warmer air in front of it, they collide, and when they do, we get some action in the atmosphere. Thats why rain is always ahead of the cold front. So we will see some showers preceding that and that will be arriving into saturday. So these models here, they kind of help me tell the picture that i want to relay to you. We are seeing a lot of cloud coverage in our southwestern counties. Notice the temps, we are in the mid70s. Earlier the models were trying to bring in some rain tonight. I am not agreeing with that at saturday. Sunday mornings things will change. We start off quiet. In this weeks smile ohio, leon bibb takes a closer look at the controversy surrounding this polarizing figure. Reporter this was a piece of the Cleveland Indians which could be seen for miles away. Stadium. Chief wahoo, a team symbol which has been and still is both loved and hated, depending on who is viewing it. It now resides at the Cleveland History Center of the western reserve historical society. This is a historic artifact, but it also talks about the predom in essence of baseball as a sport in cleveland, the place that the Cleveland Indians as a team have held in the citys history. Reporter wahoo went up on 1962. It remained there for three decades. When the indians moved to a new ballpark, wahoo, the sign went into retirement. It was donated to the western reserve historical society. Some call wahooraysist while others label it as tribute, but the society deals with something more. If we avoided controversy in terms of preserving historical items, wed have no history. Reporter john grabowski, the historical societys senior viewpoints on chief wahoo, on permanent display are also three separate labels for the one image of the Cleveland Indians logo. Right now police in Cleveland Heights still searching for the robber who killed an employee at a popular Sandwich Shop. It happened just before 8 00 last night at this mr. Hero on south taylor road. Police say a suspect came demanding cash. That suspect eventually shot an employee in the head and then took off with money from the Cash Register. The victim was take eb to University Hospital taken to University Hospital and later died. The suspect has not yet been identified. So if you have any information, you are urged to call police. And another shooting to report, this time on clevelands east side. It happened overnight at east 79th and carnegie. Two men were shot during a robbery. No word on their conditions this morning, but this is the same corner that an activist spent 48 hours camping out at for violence in cleveland. And remember the story of a young ohio boy that went viral last month . Southwestern ohio deputy found that 7yearold trying to sell his stuffed animal to buy food. Now that boys mother going to jail. Tammy bethel is sentenced to six months in jail for child endangerment. Her husband also faces the same changes, but has not yet been sentenced because he is currently in the hospital. And also ahead and also headed to prison, two chinese nationals who admit to stealing from goodyear. Both were employees within the company when they took 1. 5 million between 2013 and 2016. According to court documents, they committed wire fraud through a kickback scheme. Both have been ordered to pay back the money they stole. Goodyear says it is pleased with the sentences. The American Red Cross is putting out a plea for platelets this morning because the organization has had to cancel nearly 100 blood drives in areas hit hard by hurricane matthew. It is running dangerously low can give blood at many local red cross locations. You can also make an appointment on their blood donor app. Now, platelets primarily go to Cancer Patients receiving treatment. Today the American Cancer Society is celebrating those fighting cancer and also those who have beaten it. Thousands of local survivors and supporters are expected to be at todays making strides against Breast Cancer walk in akron. The 5k walk raises money for further cancer research. Overnight on 5 00 conartists posing as Power Company workers over the phone, threatening to shut off your electricity unless you pay up. The illuminating Company Admits its a scam hitting northeast ohio and sweeping across the with this Courtesy Call were telling you were going to be there and were shutting your power off. Reporter kim thought he was getting a stern phone call from the illuminating company about his electric service they said a truck was on the way, and it was going to be here within the hour. Reporter a caller said an illuminating company crew was heading to his business and was going to cut his power at the meter. All right. Ill give the number a call. Reporter that is unless he called this 888 number and paid his balance immediately. They wanted a credit card in told them, well, im not going to pay the bill. Reporter now, kim admits at one point he was behind and did get this shutoff notice , but. I told them i had paid the bill three weeks ago. There was no reason to shut it off. I said i have proof i paid t. Reporter finally the caller hung up. Turns out it was a scam, a con job the illuminating admits is sweeping the country, so much so a warning is now posted on its website. But business coowner mark king more to protect consumers. Youd think the Power Companies would be more trying to fix it and find out whos doing it. Reporter these two didnt fall for the scam. Well, we actually have this nice influx of warm air coming in from the southeast, and its situated over northeast ohio this afternoon, so thats why things are going to be so beautiful out there, but things will change, and that is all because of a cold front thats coming towards us. As i said earlier, when we get that cold air mashing up with that warm air, they really rain developing as a result along the periphery of that cold front. So that rain does move into the picture as we head towards sunday. Lets take our time with this one. So 6 00 p. M. This evening, were still looking good, not bad, clouds moving in. And speeging of flights, new controversy for the Airline Carrier delta after an African American doctor claims she was passed during a medical emergency. Tamika cross who is an ob gyn posted on facebook that during a recent flight an attendant yelled for a physician on board to help a passenger, but claims after raising her hand, she was told, quote, put your hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses. We dont have time to talk to you. Cross adds, she attempted to help a second time and the crew then told her another passenger, a white male could help because he did have credentials. Delta is responding by saying credentials which they are trained to collect. Now, for her part, cross post now prompting other black doctors to tweet pictures of themselves in solidarity with the hashtag what a doctor looks like. An employee at a popular Sandwich Shop was shot and killed during a robbery last night. Police still searching for the suspect this morning. Investigators say a robber entered the mr. Hero on south taylor road around 8 00 last night. The suspect then demanded cash and then shot the employee counter. They then the suspect then grabbed some money from the Cash Register and ran away. The employee died at University Hospital. The suspect has not been identified yet, so if you have any information, you are urged to call police this morning. Well, ohios secretary of state looking into options for voters who were included in this years voter purge. Tens of thousands of registered voters were deleted from the states rolls. Its possible many of them dont even know they were removed. Secretary john husted says hes asking a judge to allow these voters to cast provisio ballots on election day.
