Could still come later. Holly ferrer now live in matthews damage. And, holly, please, give us the lay of the land where you are. How bad is it this morning . Reporter yeah. Well, nick, not too great in some areas. We had a resident that just walked by and said this is way worse than the last hurricane they went through in oa 4 as shes assessing damage, it appears to be by her house or by her business. Thats what were dealing with now. You know, yesterday when Hurricane Matthew came right by the coast here it was a category 4 points, and today is when everyone is assessing. They just opened the bridge about an hour ago, letting cars come back because they were evacuated two days ago to see what has happened to their homes and to their businesses. And officials are very concerned because theyre say, listen, its a mess in some places. I want to show you something. We found this where we are right now. This is what theyre concerned about. This wood came off of somewhere, but you see these rusty nails sticking up. People could be walking through the debris and not see else even more potentially dangerous. Over here you see this is a downed power line. A lot of people may not see Something Like this, but theyve lost power to much of Daytona Beach here, and the concern is that people will be Walking Around and not notice these downed power lines. So today really its just about cleanup as people come and assess the damage. Weve seen many Business Owners over here saying they dont know when theyre going to be able to open a evacuated, theyre safe and buildings and homes can be fixed. Holly, this storm really has affected so many people as it made its way along the coast, so many thousands affected by this. Any word on some of the areas specifically where you are about when those aid crews, those repair crews will be in to help folks out . Reporter weve seen some emergency vehicles around. We dont know exactly when, but we know that police and fire we just saw a Volusia County truck come by. Theyre working down by the beach. Theyre working on some of the the facilities there because where youre looking at right now, the water washed ashore, all the way up to this point, and it brought a lt a lot of debris here. That building over there, there were two stairways on it, on the beach side. One stairway is still there, one stairway is completely gone. We dont know where it is. We assume it was washed out into the ocean. Holly ferfir, a long road for the folks as they begin the recovery proc and janessa now joining us for a look more at this storm. Just amazing damage as we are taking a live look now, a lot different in our neck of the woods than what those images we just showed folks there. Again, as holly mentioned, that damage, its really you dont know what youre getting into until you actually get out there and see it firsthand. Exactly. Its a process, a long process to go through that damage and move on. Not like that for us. For us in northeast ohio we we were tracking just a very weak cold front, but, you know, we are not over with this hurricane here. Downgraded to a category 1 currently, but if you have family and friends across charleston, South Carolina to raleighdurham, North Carolina, i want you to check on them this morning. You know, the eye of that storm has not made landfall, and it doesnt look like it will, but were still talking about maximum sustained winds up to 100 mile you can see the heavier bands charleston, making its way up to the florence area, fayetteville, raleigh, charlotte, they are up next. We are talking about gusty conditions along with Copious Amounts of moisture. The biggest concern is the storm surge, the beach erosion thats going to take place across the outer banks and the eastern seaboard. Now, closer to home, as nick said, its a completely and this is hope here, folks, a little bit of sunshine trying to track in for wayne county. Now, the cold front is starting to make its way in. Look at the contrast on this contours map. To the west 48 degrees, but you can see most of northeast ohio mid50s to upper 50s right now. The front will continue to track through, and we are waveling completely goodbye to the upper 70s waving completely goodbye to the upper 70s and lower 80s week long. That weve been basking in all week long. You can see the High Pressure has taken over much of the western communities and its going to make its way into northeast ohio throughout the afternoon. Its a bubble of falllike air that will take over this afternoon. Were only looking at daytime highs lower 60s. So look at the clouds. It really starts to fade out by the noon hour if you have outdoor plans. We are looking aokay, and, nick, we have that big meteor shower tonight. Look to the north with clearing thank you, janessa. Youre watching good morning hi, im sarah kearns, total basement finishing is a complete basement renovation package offered by ohiobased mit systems and owners mike and gale are here to explain how the products in this package will change the look and feel of your basement. Thank you so here. I know having a finished basement is on the top of of a lot of peoples wish lists. So lets go ahead and start by talking about some of the common problems homeowners face when finishing their basement sure. The biggest one is that the basement is below ground. So there are a lot of things that affect the environment of the basement that dont affect the environment upstairs. So they have to take into account other issues like shifting foundations and especially moisture when they try to build into the basement. And what happens when a use conventional materials in the basement environment . Well, first thing in the basement theres a lot more abuse going on down there, especially with the kids playing and everything. So they need a product thats a lot more durable so you dont end up with holes in the walls, but most importantly is the moisture. Theres humidity, theres plumbing leaks, theres drainage problems, and if moisture gets down into the basement, itll literally just eat the drywall, the conventional materials that are usually used in a basement and just cause everything to get moldy and smell and then tore out. We tear them out everyday. So what do you do differently to prevent those problem . We have a product thats completely inorganic. We have a video where we take our wall system and put it in a swimming pool. You can pull it out of the pool and its as good as new. So by using inorganic material, we dont have the same problems with moisture that conventional materials do. And, gayle, tell me about the materials you use and how long theyll last. Well, they should last year warranty. Wow thats incredible. Well, for more information, log onto their website, its everythingbasement. Com or give them a call. And, again, getting back to that big story weve been talking about all morning long, Hurricane Matthew, its completely gone up the entire Atlantic Coast, leaving a lot of people without power, a lot of damage in its wake. Matthew has left hundreds of thousands again w alone without power. It is now a category 1 storm, starting to break up more than weve seen throughout the morning, but its most damaging blow now being felt in the southeastern part of the u. S. Is and in georgia and South Carolina area. In fact, charleston hit earlier this morning. Holly ferfir is live in Daytona Beach for us in florida. Were going to try to go live to her now with what they are waking up to this morning as they survey that damage. Nick. Yeah, thats exactly whats happening here. About 8 00 a. M. This morning they opened the causeway and people started coming back to see what was happening with their homes, with businesses, and this is what theyve woken up to, quite a bit of damage and devastation. I want to show you something. Officials are concerned about people coming to see the destruction and for the cleanup. Theres stuff like this, this wood, for instance, we dont know where it came from, but you see of it. A lot of people coming down here may not see it, a lot of tourists coming down to take pictures of whats happened here. Theyre concerned. Youre wearing flip flops, youre going to step on Something Like that. Also if you come here, youll see this, power lines down. Thats another thing they want people to be careful of. A lot of power is out around this area, a lot of these power lines down. People have to Pay Attention to Something Like this. Also the hurricane loosened a lot of stuff on these structures. This morning we saw a couple of and its a little windy here today, so theyre saying be careful. Also you see piles of this of all this damage. People are Walking Around, walking on it, not knowing whats underneath it. Thats a concern. And if you see over at this building here, it looks like a Beautiful Day on the beach, right . Well, this building was covered in water. You can see where the basically where the debris is here. This is where the water came up to which is normally part of the street, doesnt come up this far, but you can see where the nd building over here on the beach, there were two stairways going down, one stairway is still there, one stairway completely gone. So, nick, this is going to be quite the cleanup here. We saw an ace hardware truck drive by earlier with more supplies, and weve seen a couple of folks here saying theyre going to bring a convoy now of cars coming through so that they can start the cleanup and especially for the hotels so they can get some people back in here and get people some harsh reality in those images there. Thank you so much, holly. Folks really waking up to that rude awakening this morning, as janessa joins us now with a look at weather. Back here at home, as you can see, how about that, the sun is out. This is in the brecksville area. Cooler temperatures for us here, but, really, such a major contrast than what the folks on the Atlantic Coast are dealing with and have been dealing with for the last three or four days now with Hurricane Matthew. For us its a much different story. Yeah. Theyre not in the clear yet for south and category 1, so still dicey weather for the next 36 hours here. As you said, closer to home, though, we are looking aokay. And i was tracking a little bit of rain this morning. We are tracking the arrival of our next cold front and thats going to allow these winds to whip up throughout your afternoon. So daytime highs are only looking to be back in the 60s. But when you put in these winds in full effect from 10 to 15 temperature, the feellike to the mid50s. 57 for Greater Cleveland, upper 50s for ashtabula, for dover new philly, youre currently at 58 degrees. Thats that moisture that im talking about. The front still to the northwest. Thats why toledo, sandusky, youre still seeing that sunshine and this will creep in throughout your afternoon, allowing all of us to lose the cloud coverage and sit in more sunny skies, but daytime highs, folks, theyre going to fall about 20 so a high today of only 60, after being spoiled with daytime highs in the upper 70s to near 80s all week long, even tonight as youre taking a look at that nice meteor shower, take a look to the north, but have that light coat handy. 47 with clear skies. This is really not a bad seven day forecast, just more fall like weather pattern throughout your weekend. My pick day is sunday struggling to hit that 60 degree mark. You can see a return to the 70s by tuesday. Thats the pattern were in, dipping down at night and then warming up a bit during the day. Its fall for sure. Thank you, janessa. Now to some important recall alerts that could affect your kids. First the Summer Infant company recalling 86,000 fabric slings that are attached to little luxuries whirlpool bubbling spa and shower bathtub. There have been reports of the slings deattaching and babies bumping their heads. Parents should immediately stop using the fabr contact the company for a replacement. Look at that face. Yeah. He does. Hes face. Me and bruno have this chemistry going on. But he loves to be picked up, hes okay with that. Hes just a sweet, mellow dog. So cute. Yeah. The perfect home . Something quieter, people who just kind of want a mellow dog thats kind of a couch potato, someone thats willing to do a little bit of training with him as well. He doesnt have leashes are kind of scary to him, so thats why i carried him in here like a baby, which he was fine with, block to get some exercise. Do you have any events . We do. We have tomorrow morning from 8 00 to 1 00 there is a Tailgate Party at the barley house downtown. They will be auctioning off a joe thomas jersey. Very chilled. All right, guys, thank you. Still to come this morning, for the third time in just over three weeks another person struck on the side of the road on our interstates. Why does this continue to happen and what can be done to prevent more accidents . And we are continuing to monitor Hurricane Matthew, on the move towards the carolinas. You are watching good morning it is 9 29. We begin this half hour with a live look outside from our tower camera. Theres downtown cleveland. The blue skies you can see behind a little bit of cloud coverage. The sun is out. Its going to a a great start to your weekend, a little cooler than weve seen the last couple of days, about still a nice day on tap. Welcome back to this saturday edition of good morning cleveland, im nick foley. We have several developing stories for you. We are tracking Hurricane Matthew, parts of coastal georgia are flooded and alert, being affected as we speak. As this storm weakens, though, continuing its path north. The latest on the damage so far. And donald trump not the only candidate in hot water this morning. Hillary Clintons Campaign dealing with scandal as well. The thousands of new emails wikileaks is releasing. Well, lets get right to the latest with Hurricane Matthew now where Hurricane Force winds are hitting myrtle beach as we speak. Heres what we know, it was just downgraded to a koot goar category 1 a dead in the u. S. , the death toll in haiti rising to nearly 800. Millions are without power in the southeastern states this morning. And right now the u. S. Military is on the move headed for haiti. That nation is in crisis as the death toll there, as we said, continues to rise. Just look at what the survivors are dealing with there. Winds, shredded homes, towns are still flooded. 300 marines are along with helicopters going to help. They will be able to deliver of their volunteers would be deployed to haiti. They told us the northeast ohio volunteers will focus on victims here in the u. S. , and we know you are probably wondering how you can help. Well, you can always donate to relief organizations like the red cross. In fact, if you are an at t customer, you can also text matthew to 90999 to make a 10 donation. All right. Meteorologist janessa webb joining us now for a look at weather here locally as we do keep an eye on Hurricane Matthew for those certainly our thoughts go out to them. So many people were affected, all the way from cuba and the island nations right up the Atlantic Coast and right now going through georgia and parts of South Carolina and myrtle beach and North Carolina is next. So many people being affected. This is quite an event, a historical event as this hurricane continues to track in. As you said, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families that are dealing with all this moisture, the wind that was watching you all morning long, if you had family i know meg was telling me her family in charleston, South Carolina, they are finally in the clear here, seeing some scattered showers. You can see the brunt of this moisture has lifted to the north, but whats up next, myrtle beach, wilmington, North Carolina, the outer banks, these are the heavier bands that are starting to hit here, and we are still talking about now, closer to home, this is what your weather story will be across northeast ohio. You are waking up to a few clouds to the east, but thats going to be replaced with some good oldfashioned High Pressure that allows us to see crisper air, but sunshine still intact. 57 right now for Greater Cleveland, mid50s for ashtabula. My pick day out of the weekend is tomorrow afternoon, lots of nick. Janessa, all right. While donald trump is focusing on damage control over yesterdays video, on the democratic side, Hillary Clintons campaign dealing with scandal as well. Wikileaks releasing thousands of new emails this morning. News 5s meg shaw following the campaign trail for us. Meg, what is the latest with this email scandal . Reporter well, nick, in a statement wikileaks says this is just the beginning of the series of deals involving clinton and her Campaign Chair john podesta, the we releasing 2049 emails they say came from podestas account. The emails come just hours after the Obama Administration blamed russia for attacks. The emails say she was paid at least 26 million for those speeches. In one of them she told bankers she, quote, favored open trade and open borders. In another speech clinton said politicians must balance, private position while making deals. Also saying, quote, it is unsavory and has always been that way, but we usually end up where we need to be, adding, but if everybody is watching, you know all of the back room discussions and deals, you know, then people get a little nervous to say the least. So you need both a public and private position. At this point the Clinton Campaign has not confirmed the authenticity of the documents, though it did not deny them saying he doesnt have time to figure out which documents are real and which ones are fake. Definitely an interesting turn of events just one day ahead of the next debate. Nick. Yeah. It will make for a very interesting debate to say the least. Thank you, meg. Now to a developing story here at home. Two people hit by a car along i 490 while changing a tire last night. Just the latest in a series of similar crashes. First last month trooper Kenneth Valez struck and killed while conducting Traffic Enforcement on i90. Just last week a woman was i480. News 5s megan hickey is looking into whats going on. Reporter this was the scene on i490 westbound friday night. An ambulance transported two people from the side of the highway near east 55th. One man hit by a car while trying to change his tire. Its an eerily similar scene to the one on saturday night. Two meanwhile were out changing a two people were out changing a tire and struck by motorist thes. Reporter 27yearold tineschea changing her tire when she was struck and killed, leaving behind two young children. Its crazy that two people have gotten injured over a tire. Reporter drivers near the scene tonight tell me theyre fed up. And if im trying to get out of the car to fix my tire and someone kills me, whos going to watch out for my grandchildren . It terrifies me to know that people are so much in a rush that they will hit me while im trying to get my car together. Reporter ohio law already requires drivers to slow down these situations. But statistics from the ohio state Highway Patrol show that the move over law has done very little to keep pedestrians like these safe. The number of tickets issued since the law went into effect in 2011 has quadrupled. Easy to take for granted the inherent dangers and responsibilities that come along with operating a Motor Vehicle on the highway. That was megan hickey reporting. No word this morning on the condition of the two hit last night. This morning, though, all lanes up next the surprise show of support for a local sheriffs deputy who is being treated for Breast Cancer. And in this weeks journey through my ohio, leon bibb looks at the life and legacy of the legendary entertainer from cleveland, bob hope. Janessa has the weather. Waking up to a few clouds. Thanks for kicking off your weekend with us, and were waking up to temperatures upper 50s, thermometer not going to go up too much. Were only looking at daytime highs near 60 for the Greater Cleveland area. The big talker throughout your arch is still the sunshine thats going to be in place, but the winds are coming out of the northwest. Theyll be whipping this afternoon 15 to about 20 Miles Per Hour. This is a great shot of lorain. Clouds in place, but youre seeing that cold front now making its way across western communities, and thats why theyre sitting in a lot of sunshine. Now, throughout your afternoon, a high of 62 to 63 degrees for akron and canton, but, nick, please take note of these overnight lows. Theyre not playing nice tonight. Were talking about mid40s, sheltered inland locations, i would not be surprised if tomorrow morning were reporting in the big dip there overnight. Still going to be nice during the day. Well take it. All right, janessa. Tonight the cavs face the philadelphia 76ers in their second preseason game at the q, but the q is going to look a little bit different. The arena will be filled pink for the night in support of Breast Cancer awareness month. A special half time ceremony will honor survivors, fighters and their families and friends. And fans also encouraged to be decked out in pink. And since october is Breast Cancer awareness month, a local deputy is getting a lot of pink sisters in blue. Portage county sheriffs deputy amy dukakis has Breast Cancer and then surgery and now chemo. As a result she started to lose her hair and decided to just shave it all off. Well, she is an 11year veteran with the office, so shes close to her fellow deputies. Get this, even more a surprise to amy, 17 of her coworkers and deputies with the office shaved their heads for her. I cried. I cried a lot. The amount of support here these are my brothers and sisters in blue. We put our lives in each others hands everyday, so just its just been amazing. Look at that. Theyve definitely got her back. Amy still has months of tough treatment ahead, though. She said with help from her family in blue, shes got this. Well be pulling for her as well. Good luck, amy. Well be back after this 9 44 now.
