John has that and more in this mornings democracy 2016. Reporter good sunday morning northeast ohio. As you wrap up august this week the race for the white house is in full swing. It started with donald trump in akron. Ended with a discussion on race and the words were strong. Donald trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. He is mainstream. And helping a radical fringe take over the republican party. When democratic policies fail they are left with only this one tired argument youre racist, youre racist, youre racist. They keep saying it. Uris racist. Its a tired, disgusting argument. One of Donald Trumps strongest arguments in the stance on immigration, in support of the idea of deporting 11 Million People in the u. S. Illegally. This week market what might be a pivot for trump or maybe not. To win the election he needs more than 60 million votes. The primary he won 14 million. On monday i asked him at what point do you stop playing to the 14 million and start going after the 60 plus million you need in november . I dont want to just cater to anybody. I just want to do what is right. Reporter wednesday night though if he do we tell these people to get out number one or can we work with them and let them stay . Reporter trump saying monday he had to be true to himself. I have to stay with what i feel. Reporter but what he felt on immigration what is drew many of his supporters to him. If you ask any trump voter the only issue that links him together is his immigration stance. No other issue. The other thing he has to be careful of, hes supposed to be the tell it like it is politician, the one willing say whatever it takes to done if he makes this major shift out of this issue its problematic. Our manufacturing is going to continue to leave. Im going to bring it all back. Reporter if you have a sense this campaign is a has a fall feel and were already at the end of august you conventions were early this year. This may be technically the longest general election period in 56 years but not really. Since early voting will be underway in five states by the end of september. Hillary clinton looked to pull the ads off the air. In two states where shes leading but also two states that essentially dont have early voting. Ohios early voting starts october 12th if youre registered, dont worry, its a day you dont need to remember. Ill send every single voter in this state an absentee ballot request, if they fill it out and turn it in they have a month to vote leaving home.
