News compromise possible I'm bored and deal with Jennifer thanks for spending part of your weekend with us here's what's coming up this hour President and his State of the Union asked lawmakers to achieve greatness that requires bipartisanship is the current climate in Washington favorable for that the immediate changes that airlines could make to improve the flying experience for most of its customers like bringing back interlining with the spring home buying season on the horizon a personal finance expert has a list of rules for real estate and companies are using the latest tech and design to get people off the couch and into their stores but is this creating a shopping inequality in more one part of the country the future. You know what we read about in the new Amazon go with technology on the other side of the divide you know a lot of the independent grocery store that. A lot of those small. Income Area Reporter Erica Pandy attacks C.E.O.'s on dividing America by how people shop She's here in about 25 minutes. After more than a month of Washington operating at a near standstill Democrats Republicans and the White House are already to notch some political wins but to do that they'll have to work together your lies a cop. Ns congressional reporter at USA Today asked lawmakers if they thought that was possible Eliza what they say well if possible I think is the key word here but not on a broad array of things there's just a few issues where there really is a chance and those issues I would say the main issue are prescription drugs lowering the cost of health care and the other one is infrastructure investment there the 3rd that Democrats are hoping to basically get the president involved in and thinking the party might come along and that it would be ethics reform basically he ran on drain the swamp and Democrats are hoping that the base they'll want that and they may be able to make some changes while being money in politics that sort of thing but they are less optimistic about that when I start with prescription drugs what could unfold there because that's a slippery one Yes So that is one I think there's very pride agreement that the cost of prescription drugs is too high and the president has really made this an issue he cares a lot about I talked to from our Democrat Peter Welch who is on a couple of the committees that look at prescription drugs he's also on the affordable prescription drug for through the co-chair and so he's met with the president on that issue you know the Trump was really enthusiastic energetic about it even said we're getting murdered by the drug company in the Welsh optimistic about at least for the president that he wants to be an issue but so far he said what the administration has that has been pretty modest It sounds lovely and everybody would like less expensive drugs but here I guess I have is that pharmaceutical companies say well they're going to cap as you know 2 or 3 percent increases a year on prices that we're not going to be able to research and develop as much or offer as many coupons or I don't know like or care political. Campaign Yeah I mean all right and that I think is that a problem and so if something were to move on prescription drugs I imagine it would be well it would not be an overhaul of the whole system because both Democrats and Republicans do have pharmaceutical companies in their districts in their states you know they go to their campaigns no one wants to be the person saying you know having to respond to company I think fine we just can't take this because we can't research it so I think there are narrow bill but exactly right that is the big concern and that's why I don't imagine we will see a giant overhaul of the system you speak with allies a Collins USA Today congressional correspondent she's written piece titled President Trump says he wants bipartisanship but is it possible are talking about infrastructure too because that I feel like we've been hearing about that for a couple years and if nothing's happened at this point what what what brands optimism for 21000 so that they've applied lime as well as prescription drugs actually bipartisan chamber stand up but again if it once you get to the details there is really broad consensus that the bridges and highways in this country need to be fixed and people understand that it's very expensive to do that but one of the real breakdown in it for Republicans and to look for either. Democrats think that the government should be paying for it there is talk of that. But there are lot makers in both parties who oppose that the pride and called in last year's State of the Union for a $1.00 trillion dollar infrastructure bill but. You know Democrats were very excited about that but then when it came down to the details 1st of all there were many and the ones that there were definitely aren't critics because it would basically fund this program through either the private sector. They're Or taking funding from local government and. For other projects so that's a nonstarter for Democrats it's really interesting that the Transportation Committee another one of those committees that is very bipartisan they agree that something needs to be done this is something the president campaigned on it $26.00 pm It's just how to pay for at least a lot as a lot of Collins congressional reporter at USA Today 12 minutes now after the hour on. But with us the world's largest biometrics surveillance company wants to add your driver's license photo to its digital library which already has collected and processed some 3000000000 faces. Idema based in Paris is at the center of a push to create a digital driver's licenses that could allow motorists to flash an app on their smartphones instead of showing traditional plastic id cards to prove they can drive vote or even drink beer I DIMIA systems are responsible for issuing traditional licenses in $42.00 states that account for 80 percent of all u.s. Drivers more on what's happening from Dan Boylan national reporter at The Washington Times Dan what's going on going that's what's going on here and across the country to taking a plastic driver's license and make it a digital life that would sit on your smartphone it's an interesting idea people say this would make people's lives easier not just movement to everything digital everything phones privacy advocates have said you know there are a lot of problems with that because that police of looking could potentially just look at everything inside your phone so that's kind of a quick and dirty big picture who wants to do this. Well there's a there are states across the country there are about 15 that are doing pilot programs right now there's a Louisiana actually has an app to do this there's a company in Washington a couple companies there's a charm a French firm called Idema which is a pioneering firm in terms of fingerprinting iris scanning and facial recognition scanning and they're one of the forces behind the move towards digital Ok and what they wanted for well they seem to want to it's I did some pretty deep dive reporting on this here because I deem it has got his teams a lot of data biometric data and biometric data is that that of that's correct it's when you're scanned if you go in and out of the country if you go through an airport traveling overseas biometric data is actually also collected in most states when you sit down and have your driver's license Id taken that biometric data is collected I do not feed some of this a metric data to the Department of Homeland Security to the f.b.i. To the Defense Department and Georgetown University they've got a Privacy Law Center set about most Americans now have their biometric data in some sort of us that a base so it's this firm in the desert but it's also very much the United States government since $911.00 has really tried to create massive databases of identifying who are meeting that most of us could get picked up by some sort of facial recognition software. That's exactly what it ruins and there are some pilot programs at airports that are pretty riled if if your listeners want to go and check some of the stuff out I mean misses that Orwellian we critics are calling this stuff Orwellian because there are pilot programs in some airports across the country where you and I could be strolling down I could be mean at the airport to have a drink and we could be moving in some terminal and you and I would walk into a terminal and suddenly they could oh that's Gordon deal that's been boiling I just a camera that's up there grabbing our faces which is incredible that if one of us had. It warrants out or something I guess right maybe that could trigger something to get arrested on the spot I don't look at it yeah yeah that's and that's exactly where like some of these privacy privacy rights groups there are some there was a big operation in the Electronic Frontier Foundation out of San Francisco you know they say that the problem is what if they identify and go through that's cordon deal but actually Gordon deals face they think is also some you know Gordon Johnson in Florida who's just whacked his mother and then you get told then and people say oh my god that was a misidentification So some of these privacy rights groups the rights groups are saying misidentification not a problem until it's I am out the step shouldn't be because it's not very regulated We're speaking with Dan Boylan national correspondent at The Washington Times he's written a piece called Orwellian vision critics a digital driver's licenses expose citizens to hackers and abuse. What about for terrorist purposes with necessarily keep the country safe do something like this I mean that's a big argument for it and that's why so many billions of dollars have been invested in the United States since 911 in this technology that. I guess is one of the financing an absence of funds from but it's really inside the guts a lot of this technology Washington Apple say spoken Amazon they're also all over the steps and facial recognition and part of that is so that they can keep the battle to Department of Homeland Security who says if there's a bad back I mean I'm some let's say Yemen or somebody maybe it was the radicalized in the u.s. We can track them and harm them and mention that you got don't do something extraordinarily that you know inside the national security apparatus in Washington people say oh gosh that is absolutely critical for that reason we stand in boiling national reporter at The Washington Times 21 minutes now after the hour on this weekend. I want to keep my heart healthy so I get my cholesterol checked regularly and when my doctor told me my cholesterol was borderline I found early. There's a new breed of garlic that helps me. Travelers love to hate on airlines airlines sometimes do bad things to their customers doing them with and on fees and occasionally leaving them stranded for a couple of days so if you could wave a magic wand and improve air travel what would you do we're not talking about fantasies like 1st class seats for $10.00 airlines need to be able to pay their bills but Wall Street Journal travel writer Scott McCartney says there are practical fixes that could make flying better for people who don't have super elite status or the cash to buy flying beds it's got change be elimination would be great yeah I think of all the fees the change fee is really the one that. That's most egregious and really most unfair to consumers. This is the penalty that doesn't fit the crime $200.00 on a domestic to take it off and wipes out the entire value. Of the ticket or most of it $400.00 on an international ticket and you know stuff happens in life people have to make changes in the airline in a sense protected and in several ways one is when you when you change and have to buy a new ticket you often pay I are fair and the airline is sort of double dipping in the sense they will charge you a higher fee or end we'll charge you this penalty the airline also. In most cases it was time to resell the seat certainly when it went over booking there's been a potential to already have somebody lined up for that particular seat in airlines you know in the in the fairness category airlines change are scheduled all the time and they don't compensate travelers I'm not quite sure why travelers should be you know I'm 20 have to change their schedule what with me take the airlines perspective because you know the industry as well as anybody what would an airline spokesperson say about your proposal to stop this and it's a good question and I think today it did it's a dated answer I'm so when airlines say we need that penalty and there so you don't just you don't have a whole lot of business travelers buying cheap fares and then changing as they age and they need to change and Ned and and the world has changed since that was an issue most companies are now require travelers to buy the cheapest fare and you know it may be good I did maybe did the cheapest did this class fare for a preferred carrier and it may be the cheapest nonstop fare for a preferred carrier but generally it is are fine with people buying nonrefundable fares because they realize that the unrestricted fare that the airline want you to buy would have no change penalty is priced much much higher than the restricted fare and so you can buy a lot of restricted fares and pay the penalty if you need to before you get the full cost of the unrestricted fare it just said it's a it's a logic for world that doesn't exist anymore because there are a lot of added on line booking on people the seat the cheapest price whether you're paying for it out of your pocket or out of your company's pocket and they they you know they don't go looking for the highest fare that unrestricted they go looking for. The best deal fine for business or fine for we were speaking with Wall Street Journal travel columnist Scott McCartney He's written a piece about ways the airlines could improve the industry instantly this was something I guess I didn't realize was her frowned upon or was actually still around bring back interlining. It's a real issue because people think it does still exist and and it's really up to the good graces. And they really stop doing it. Over to another airline flight gets canceled you know American canceled doubles got a fight over Delta because they've got empty seats and what happens when that does happen. The other now they've negotiated reduced rates and and in theory it should sort of even out right go sometime Delta is going to cancel if I don't send people over to American. But it doesn't always happen. For example. More reliable than American or actually. Any agreement with American and then and then came back and said wait a minute we really do need to us but it's. Scott Wall Street Journal airline writer Scott McCartney thought his quote was great about change fees he said logic for a world that doesn't exist anymore 30 minutes after the hour on this weekend. a monster Jim Bakker. Thanks for spending part of your weekend with us Gordon deal with Jennifer Cushing coming up this half hour rules for real estate also the number one most Googled career question and a snowball fight involving police with their tactical gear it's a fun story in about 20 minutes. The phrase future of retail conjures images of getting groceries without cashiers super fast drone delivery and interactive shopping but it's instead set to look very different depending on where you live some Americans will have an array of choice. And convenience while others will not here's this weekend's Jennifer. You've heard about the growing economic inequality in this country turns out that inequality is dramatically impacting the world of retail Erica Pandy has written a piece for x. Titled 2 Americas divided by how we shop and joins us now Erika what does retail look like in more affluent parts of the country in more affluent parts of the country the future we pale you know what we read about in the news that Amazon go with the new technologies cashier experience people shopping kind of making shopping a game again all these companies are trying. To get younger shoppers to come into the store if you know it's so what's Hollywood in a way it's just all of these. That are making retail come alive again how are the stores different physically. So I mean these these are much more who stop stores so used to be that just going to the stores buying something was fun was shopping was an American pastime but that now with the rise of e-commerce people can just stay at home so you know stores are adding what their strength believe in parks you know free beer or beautiful decor that you can take photos just anything that you need to be there I think there's a d.s.w. In Columbus that has a male salon and a hair salon and it just you know I elements like that that make you want to come in wow Erica what does shopping then look like in a lower income area so that on the other side of the divide you've got you know a lot of the independent group free stores and book stores closing down in a foot traffic a lot of the those malls when we talk about the Mall of Apocalypse most of the malls that are closing down are in lower income areas or you know far away from big city centers and so what's coming in is the discounters the Wal-Mart and most importantly the dollar stores which can survive there because you know people are just looking for convenience and very very low prices so there are $30000.00 stores in the country already between the 2 big chains Dollar Tree dollar general they're adding 2000 each per year they say and you know I mean creasing share of people in these learned to Mary's are depending on these dollar stores for their closure ease and most of them do not have any fresh produce We're speaking with Erika Pandy of X.T.'s talking about those dollar stores and how many they're adding do we not get to a point where there are too many of them and they cannibalize each other. I think I mean so there's still plenty of pockets in the country where there's no retail at all so I think there's plenty of room to grow especially as more more stores start to close. And I think specially with with the dollar stores were had were you know all signs are pointing to a potential recession average every other retailer stock goes down the dollar store stocks go up because even more people are relying on them so there's definitely plenty of room for growth for that business model does this growing divide help e-commerce even in the lower income areas because they have fewer choices. I think it took to some extent especially for you know areas that aren't exactly are sort of middle income but or girl e-commerce growth but in terms of the lower income area e-commerce assumes that you have a credit card or debit card you can use it assumes that you live in a neighborhood safe enough that if your package gets dropped off outside your door it will get stolen I think there are a lot of barriers to entry for people to really think about your story talks a lot about the future or are we seeing a greater divide each and every year and do you continue to see this getting even worse Absolutely I think if it's it's already this dire it's good economic times experts I've spoken to are saying you know just wait for a recession just wait for there to be even more cash strapped people and for the cities to pull away even more from the lower income areas not all areas this weekend Jennifer to shrink with reporter Erica Pandy at x. Sure don't say that anymore it's been a roller coaster dozen years for home prices and some experts think another rough patch is in the offing personal finance expert Jonathan Clements at humble dollar dot com has put together a list of his rules for real estate Jonathan how do you see things this is an interesting time in the real estate market we had a pretty nice boom over the last step few years that was preceded by the big That started in 2006 if you look at the pie just doesn't exist so the average return on. It's less than one percent a year over the past dozen is so the question is should you buy real estate My answer is yes and whom should be the goal of every American but you need to do so with your eyes wide open meaning what's Well that's what it comes down to my 13 rules and the 1st rule I mention it this thing in real estate on your own home it's a home riskier than it feels now we all feel like you know house is a safe investment should people strive to own a home well yet when it comes to price appreciation I mean whom doesn't seem like a big winner but of course there is one huge advantage to. Which is you get to live in the place you get to consume what economists call in Q Did read and that is the most valuable pot of money. If you want to get some sense that you just think about how much you could rent out your home for and all likelihood if you rented out your house you could collect an annual stream of income equal to 6 or 7 percent of your home's value so you're getting to. The valuable benefit from owning your home well that benefit is income tax free if you rented out your house you have to pay income tax on the rate you receive when you rent yourself Uncle Sam doesn't get old. Point number 8 on your list here if you're a homeowner with a fixed rate mortgage what you really want is inflation how come. When I was growing up in the 1970 degrees to say you can't go wrong with relish state and that was so true in the 1978 and the 170 s. We had very high inflation double digit in a number of years and what that did was it wrote up incomes it housing prices. Yet a fixed rate mortgage the cost of those mortgage payments each month went down in real terms because they were fixed in terms of nominal dollars So inflation is a natural thing for indebted homeowners because of that combination of rising incomes rising home prices but stagnant mortgage payments Here's another way to think about real estate agents to your point number 13 explain that a real estate real estate agent's greatest financial incentive is not to get you the highest price when you're selling or to get you the lowest price when you're behind a great incentive on the part of the real estate agent is to get you to act quickly you know if you have your my house on the market for an extra month and you make $10000.00 extra as a result that is a big win for you and the home seller the for the real estate agent it's not to be much more money in their pocket but they're going to put in a month of extra work stuff and John Clements editor and founder of humble dollar dot com It is 13 minutes now and for the hour on this weekend. Thanks for spending part of your weekend with us we're working on putting our jobs the most Googled jobs question of 2018 was how to quit a job according to new data from Google Trends answers to that question and others we asked last year from Katie Hill editor at Market watch Katie sounds like that question reflects the current economy like an economy right and more people feel confident about leaving the one they had because they have another job lined up and then they know looking at you know a lot of people maybe they didn't get away to their company not pushing them out because now there are more jobs where they can get paid more and go somewhere else . But yeah I mean how to quit a job and what job should I have a career question that really that really speaks to what's going on here that's interesting art so if this is something you are exploring and let's say you've committed to it because you've asked for these more popular questions on Google what do you do right now 1st of all you've got to give it up no I mean I know the economy is a really great and you could get a lean and you know take a week up in travel but you really should get the most employees and more from our senior people it's a common courtesy to figure it out and the other thing is don't blab about quitting until you've actually told management which is happening a lot like you. Chat with your coworkers about how miserable you are you tell them you're quitting get out. Good point here and you don't want to break it I mean there may be plenty of other Dow down here jumping Q But you know to. Morrow you might want to do people again don't want to have burned bridges are you said to ask for a private in person meeting with your boss to resign Yeah I mean if you can help it don't do it on an e-mail I mean I know people in remote and even if you're on the you can email and now have a conversation and then do it on the phone do it on video chat but you need to be face to face with them and any to get out of it I mean you might be so angry you know wanting to lift out all the things you hate about your job it really does is not to try to be positive thank them for the opportunity if they have enjoyed the experience. You know I'm going to really try to be positive about it because again you did it if it opened doors you might want to be people again they might be hiring from something that you want to get you don't want to have been a branch that's I would I'm not picking on this generation but millennial isn't Gen z. Right who are fairly new to this and you know texting to get a job. First place is not how you should end it right no no I mean really just like Thank You really helped me I really did a period and really valuable you know even if you do want to get some feedback like something went really wrong be respectful when you get feedback wait I mean if I can be like for everything with you now it can be respectful you know from time to be out of people's control though it's good to be positive in respect for speaking with Katie Hill editor at Market Watch and she's written a piece about the number one most Googled career question of 2018 and perhaps not surprising is how do you quit a job aren't you mention Sue about screening a smooth transition what's involved there yet you know to be willing to train your replacement make sure all your any document projects leave them out to be involved supporting the way they train their placement that the pleasurable but you've got to make it really easy because you don't want you may leave and be positive and leaning and then you meet up. A mess that the next person doesn't know how to clean up that's going to let you know but leave a bad taste in that bottle now so really try to create a bit of transition possible so that I think a job or job pretty famously has Katie Katie Hill editor at Market Watch based in New York it is 6 minutes now in front of the hour on this weekend.
