He could hardly believe what he was seeing on the television, as the World Trade Center towers came crumbling down. He calls it the worst day in firefighting history. But he says as tragic as that day was, it help change firefighting efforts for the better. Departments across the country have better communications. And they have better partnerships between other departments. But he says the biggest lesson from 9 11 is firefighter the wellbeing of our citizens is always our number one prioroity. However, when we are faced with a situation based on our training, based on our experience, based on that company officer, where that situation is imcompatible with life, then we have to start thinking about a lot of other things. Thats when police say the victim was sitting in his vehicle in front of his home and was shot in the back. Two people reportedly went up to the car and fired multiple shots. Hitting the victim. We spoke with father steven avella. He is a professor of history at marquette university. He says hes seen a change in conversation over the last couple of years from where were you on september 11, to where were your parents or grandparents. Avella says textbooks typically give a quick narritive of the events, carnage, and decision to go to war, and then segways quickly. Thats why he only uses the textbook as a base. And incorperates an event like this is something that a teacher has to stop, and you have to use visiuals. You cant rely entirely on the textbook. You have to use speicals from pbs, cnn and others of course with permission. And show people what happened.
