And climate change. For the future. Of the. 2 to 5 that's AAA to. 2 to 5. Starting all this hour. Better than I deserve what's up Austin Well my dad moved in with us a couple years ago and no longer works 2 to. Stage 4 cancer. 'd while he was working you know purchased the car. Back and forth to work to get rid of his old clunker and. He's now working with the car the insurance meds and things like that. That's not going to. Get a little behind to help. Someone if you know if we should just go ahead and. Snowball and start working to. Help his situation as he does. RINGBACK As one family just got to work on No no I would not pay his debts I think it's wonderful that you're giving him a place to live and you're taking care of him while he's fighting cancer but there's no point in paying his debts it doesn't serve any purpose at all he sold the car to me yeah we currently have a. Little more marketable Yeah absolutely how much of that is a got. Just basically it's just a car. And a storage unit. He had a shortage on it with a bunch of stuff and. Yes Why I guess when you sell off stuff and you're in the storage unit and use that money right. That's fairly easy. So I was I mean if you sell the car and you sell stuff on the storage room and he doesn't have any expenses if he's living with you I think it's a medical. And don't sign for that. Well I I mean that's what I mean a you can take care of him without you know you getting on the hook for a $1000000.00 or the cancer treatments right and so on you know that there's not blur the lines on what taking care of him means. You see what I'm saying when you go over and start stepping into his financial obligations and taking those on that's a whole lot different than taking care of him while he's you know fighting a cancer fight. And how old is he. Will be $65.00 well Ok And you said stage 4 what's the prognosis. Was it was 3 to 10 initially but that was I think before this all the bone scans and so kind of where or well it spread so I think that's that's kind of all. 3 of those that way it will progress I think months to 10 months no I'm sorry it was 3 to 10 years I think in the 30 years was. Yeah Ok All right. Ari I'm sorry yes I was are you guys are having a walk through this the least of his problems them are cars and storage units but of we're leave. You can clean out those 2 things and get rid of it help him get rid of those 2 obligations without you having to sign up for his debts that makes sense yes I mean. You yes you take care of him your dad and that's wonderful and I think I want to completely hear you you know embrace that and I'm so sorry you guys are facing this is such a a gut wrenching thing to go through emotionally Ok Now then let's deal with what happens someday we all pass away what happens when he passes away if he has debt and he passes away it doesn't get paid. But if you start taking it on then you his debt survives him and you are now obligated so. And so a real cold way of saying it I don't want you to misunderstand my lack of compassion because it's not want to hear ya know what you guys are bad but but make sure you take care of him but let his debt pass away when he does. Does it make sense if you know if you die and you owe money and there's no assets which is his situation they don't get paid they don't get paid and so that's what I mean by it's there's no reason let's do the best we can do to get this off of him to but but you know on a scale of one to 10 this debt stuff is a one and cancer is a 10 right but in terms of things to worry about things to be stressed about her whatever or whatever so that's want to concentrate on that but. I'm so glad you're there for him and that you've got he's got a place and. You know you can take care of him and those kinds of things and it's just a it's the way it should be so I Thanks for the call open phones of AAA 825-5225 you jump in we'll talk about your life and your money they my husband I both purchased the newest I bought our earlier this year before getting on your plan I say we purchased we financed it if you include this in our debt snowball because it is actually part of our phone bill all debt is in your debt snowball if you're paying payments on your. Yeah you would pay that off. So on yeah put it in your debt snowball just because you're paying the payment as a part of your phone bill doesn't mean you'll have a payment your payment and so you know cleared up cleared up as fast as you can and it's like you would any other debt and so forth so there you go open phones a triple 88255225 That question came from the Ramsey baby steps community which is a private Facebook group of ours go check it out there's all kinds of wonderful discussions and. A few crazy things and all that kind of stuff and so yeah let's get it on and on jump in and. Check it out the Ramsey baby steps community it's the Ramsey baby steps community and that way you'll know it's the actual one there's a few of them out there that are not authorized or official. Somebody just started up and said I want to talk about the Rams that well it's your law that do that and I'm going with mad at you about that but this is the official one so there you go changes everything right but my wife and I are designed intense on paying off our home in 6 years but it means putting a total of 33 percent of our take home pay with the extra payments towards the mortgage it works out in our every dollar budget but are we crazy I would not put where you want to go on longer doing your as well as while you're doing baby step 6 you're doing baby steps 4 and 515 percent of your income going into retirement something towards kids' college. And then if you jack up and add to what you are putting on the. On the House that's wonderful you're paid off I don't care. You Lance our high Matthew welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. I may have been better than I deserve what's up. I'm thinking and I'm not none of $2000.00 and. I can't really get fired up on the baby thing if you can help me out. Why do you think you can't get started. Don't have the additional income our alibi. By my mom but it kind of all but. What if I had them then they found out that they were damn sure they are made of I want a part but I can't find any by going to them Ok fair enough. And I'm to be fair of them are very figure out what the bank your single. And what is the $93000.00 and. 6 and a long as Nayantara for that loan that 11 bio family are in limbo 700. 48008 I long for 23. But what's your income. Personally my 454-0000 might want to live in the So in total that you paid in the. Time you got a car you can afford for one thing. Now $23000.00 car doesn't fit in this equation that you gave me that's one of your problems so what I would do is jump on if you tried the every dollar budget. So the system wouldn't sort of March like this man you have $57000.00 common and you look at what your monthly income is going to be for the upcoming month you can estimate that pretty close and you might be a little off because you may or may not get the podium all these other things could pop in or out but you're going to be pretty close to what your take home pay is going to be for the upcoming month and will the money getting ready to start December in our case today and so then you list out what are you going to do with that and you give every $1.00 of those dollars an assignment taking care of food shelter clothing transportation and utilities before you do anything else the basics of life right once we've got food shelter clothing transportation and utilities taking care of then and that your car payment your house payment your lights and water you got money set aside for food then we begin to work on you know the baby steps as soon as we can find any other room in the budget but you've got room in this budget there this is doable. But you do have a car you can't afford and so part part of what you're looking at is you're going to end up selling this car in order to get ahead because a $23000.00 car in a household that makes 50000 bucks is too much car when you have more than 50 percent of your household income tied up in things with wheels and motors that are going down in value it's very difficult mathematically to get ahead and build wealth like almost impossible and so this car is what's killing the hair that's one of the things is got your stock and so I'm moving out of that and I'm going to get on a detailed written plan I think you can do this but I. Now I think you and your wife are going to sit down together decide that this is important or not doing anything with money except what's on this page of the budget you're the boss of it until you get it done and once you get it done then it's the boss of you it's going to tell you what to do because that way ya know we can do that because we have more important goals like getting out of debt more important goals like building wealth more important goals and you don't need to see the inside of a restaurant leisure working there and so yeah you probably do need some extra work you may need to look at your overall career track and go Is this working for me you're not making a ton of money considering the run you ragged out of town. So is there another direction you can go long term with a career that's another thing you could look at here but that I think you can do this Matthew you keep working on it you call me back if I can help more Stephen is with us in Dallas Texas Hi Stephen how are you Hey Dave I'm great but how can I help you got 80 k. In McComb tell you in any case in my bank so I've got a decent amount saved but I'm not really sure what to do with the savings Ok I'm not sure the future holds Ok How old are you 27 who were all this money come from well I'm a programmer so I just say I don't want anything basically. Ok. You're single. Thing remark I want to know what you make a year. One in 5 which is actually a 12 series. Like a month ago so I'm doing doing Man Oh very cool thank you Ok so what do you want to do with money. Well. There's not much so I figured I'd get a house or something Ok. But I don't know I don't know if it's the right financial choice I want to be that I connect with so it's not just something to do and I've also considered moving overseas for a couple years and something like Sweden I think I would it would be easier to buy an apartment there for the time that I'm there and then sell it when I leave so I'm not sure that I want my money locked up anywhere in time and I'm not sure that I want to know how the market here or in next months here but or an orange we losing . You know if we do not do the thing if I go over there for a couple years it could very well get locked up in the market there ya I think and I'm thinking in a in a foreign country that you don't know the economy and you don't know the market that's where I rant and so on and you know what I would do right now how old are you coming from 27. Is Where does a sound since you just got to $12000.00 already. Start shopping for Swedish jobs. Yeah honey it's time to go well I definitely staring at. You know just a couple things that are keeping me here and that's that I might start working for my dad and if I do that I would put the Sweden thing on old. Permanently And the problem with when thing in Sweden is. Not long lines and you've got to wait in line for years and basically you have to buy a 2nd hand and talk. But it's up to you I don't care but I would not if you're heading overseas I would not buy something here and I would not buy something there . Ok I know I would do so then they hurt the Quite a bit that well that a savings account is safe if you're leaving the money alone 5 years or more then I would move toward some mutual funds with this money and at least park it in something you had at least something like an index fund at a minimum but if you've got to be planning to leave it alone a while to do that but you know I think when you make your life decisions on where you're going to land like are we staying in Morgan for Dad are we going to Sweden or what's the plan then that's going to tell you what to do with the money the 80000 that's not in the retirement now but part of that money needs to be set aside right now as your emergency fund not to be touched but the other part is what you can buy a property with once you know where you're going to settle. So we set aside 3 to 6 months of expenses out of that 80000 as your rainy day fund your emergency fund and in your world that sounds like 15000 bucks probably something like that because you don't spend a lot of money and I think 15000 go along the way if you had an income blip. And then you need decide you know can you make as much money working with your dad is that a career choice you want to do long term is that your best plan and if it isn't you're going to do that now then let's do it and just you know Sweden is a place you visit on vacation then. But if you're going to make that journey and make you know make the work move them do it sooner rather than later if I were in your shoes because you've done very well you may you know how to make money and you know how to save money and live on less and you make sure you're way ahead of most people much less most 26 year olds I mean you're killin it you've done very very well congratulations but once you make your life choices that will tell you what to do with this money in the meantime if you're going to leave it alone 5 years or more I'm talking about moving some of that above $15000.00 towards. An emergency fund a mentor towards an investment $15000.00 being an emergency for this is that a ramshackle. Alan . When your range of income during that time well we started it if the 1000 and it 90 Ok it's very good and what kind of debt was a $65.00 we had 3 credit cards we had a family day. In the waiting and student loan Ok so over a little over 4 years if someone of all 5 years you've been working on this tell me your story so we had a lot of life that happened between After 6 months he attended college without a court any more debt oh good college in the northeastern India and that changes the numbers it does the numbers are probably even more if we didn't if we included other things outside of our debt but then we also had our son and then we also had a lot of Murphy that also calls it also as well to make the time just such a long period of time you know so you really just had to lean in and persevered and here we did it came with some challenges as well just because of the time that it took for us to get through it because you know when you're doing something this long and gets at a point where you're wanting to quit one of the 26 times yes it's not 56 times. Yeah. So what you're degrees in so mine is in ministry of manager so I got my bachelor's in ministry to management and I have a basket as an integrated studies with a concentration at Holkham and very cool and that's what both of you do know well I'm I actually have a manager at Delta community I don't know if you guys heard of. Unit out and out of course we had our baby when Jay and we had a Wally So while with all that we we were able to just work through it and just keep our own so what do you tell people the key to getting out of bed is. I would say the key is discipline you definitely have to be disciplined to to get through it and also just working together to this. Make it. In your case don't quit Absolutely that's a big knock don't quit and I think that having a wife for what you why you're doing it is extremely important just because of the amount of time that it will take if it does take you a while the war if it takes you a short period of time either case it's can be tough because you have to balance those challenges that you have with either yourself or with the person that you're with. Me of course we had our fights if not 56 fights you know. That put us through some some challenges but at the same time when the biggest blow up that you have during the time will the biggest argument you remember it yes I definitely share that really so on our honeymoon oh no honeymoon. Our question today comes from blondes dot com Find out for yourself why blonds dot com is the number one online retailer of custom window coverings you get free samples free shipping and new promos use the promo code Ramsey Karen is in Tennessee My husband and I are debt free except our home but do a lot of shopping online how does a system work when you shop online what doesn't. The home full of system is not for things that you buy online it's for things you buy when you're out walking around if you're in the mall if you're in the store but if you do everything online you've got to have a budget and that holds you to it jump on every dollar and every dollar dot com Make sure you've got your budget going. All the on below does it tells you if you're running out of money in a category for those of you don't know for instance if you're setting up your food budget that's when you generally somebody bought online and we will deliver a grocer delivering that kind of stuff no moles people still go to the grocery store so let's. Put the amount of money we're going to spend the groceries and I'm loving cash and go to the grocery store and when the cash is empty that means you quit buying and it makes you realize when you're busting through a category on budgeting and so that's what the Omble up system is and but all of this is just a category it's all it is so i'm the every dollar app when if you're What if you're sitting there. You know in your recliner getting ready to buy something on Amazon you jump over check the app do I have the money in that category to spend it I'm going to spend money and if you don't then you click prime you just move on to something else and impulsion your butt off online but if you've got the money and you want to buy something I don't care buy that's the point you're just making your money behave instead of one or that's the whole process here so good question a question. For commuters does Metro filling putting Delaware make the West now learn all about how therapy helps and heals straight from the heart tell all where with Alan who down weekdays from 9 till noon on w. D.l. John is whether Canada along now are you. Good are you Mr better than I deserve what's up. So I didn't mean to you about one month ago I'm on another and I'm trying to you pay for college I am currently 19 years old I live at home and my question is right now it's Would it be better for me to pay year by year in cash for school or would it be better if I put it in a mutual fund for the 4 years get the old stuff which had no interest while I'm in the point yes and wait when I'm done school pay everything that I have in the mutual funds towards school I would pay cash for school I would not play here by you I would not I would not play with borrowed money. You don't get yourself in trouble because nothing ever turns out like you think it's going to turn out and around then you'll end up with that debt hanging over your head if you're not just if you're not perfect with it and nothing is ever perfect so just pay cash as you go Tabitha is in Charlotte North Carolina Tabitha How are you. Now and they gave just going to help. Ok so we have been listening to you nonstop on You Tube and I had when I found you and basically I hear your name more than I hear my name from now so we are trying to get some of our that taking care of the value or go my husband mock the job and it's making a lot less money and we just kind of been bumbling and going through the last year what do you said American we. Need to make 70 with him right now. You make about around 80 I mean carry around $41.00 and ubiquity $1600.00 that would be a big Why do you want to take such a pay cut. Well they let him go in the other job so he went into another he did he worked or card but he went into the same kind of line of work but the local place that we had around here because of our very small town and not just didn't pay very good about what we you know it's like we can't afford to move to go that way where you know you can make more money type out right now but we're just kind of trying to get through it right now for $30000.00 a year you can't afford not to move right. Yet. If you're making $81.00 place and make 40 another place right time to be at the other place. Yeah so that when we decided in the coming show yes and because of that we had to die until just recently. And so that we could we were starting our thought out on the other job we had a little bit of left over we had been. A few $1000.00 in the bank that kind of carried us through and now work and who we out and. My health went downhill over the last year I have adrenal impotently so I cannot work right now and so it been a big struggle because I now work and Bilko and not lying calling you to kind of you you know so much and you know we're hearing our how much you own your car. We have cars that are paid off on one of there are photos but they drive. Their vote totals to help me live in Colorado and so they are we're looking ahead looking at are not only think of $100.00 eat out of that now they're not from point to what building if you've got to get in right we have we have we have a house for paying on it $165000.00 on a loan and then we have $30000.00 of debt which is a $20000.00 of credit card type line of credit and then 10000 of medical bills and . This is an income issue isn't it. Ok And so if he's going to stay in that line of work and he cannot make 80000 in your town you need to be in a different town. You will be happy to hear that but I'm happy that they are not where you are you can't just sit here and like these numbers and you can't put your hands over your ears and go la la la la la la la I make the math change the math is not going to change until you change it but I don't I mean if he can make 80. What I don't understand is how he was making 75 or 80 in the same field in the same town but now he can't. Well he would actually own travelling at will not probably about commuting and he would doing race car and he does he don't car for a smoking gun boat and again he's now in a where a smaller area and he took doing that restoration now and I think walk around here but yeah we've been heavy metal but it happens so what does he got to do to get his income on does he have to move does he have to go back to race cars going away from restoration does he have to do both What's he got to get in come up I would say that we dock we need to move Ok what nothing are saving though right now you know and we've dropped them below and where that's not a good thing but we well I'm not gonna let that in the drop in the bills doesn't scare me it's not dealing with calls and want it's not dealing with the cause of the bills being dropped it scares me you can't just sit there and look at this and think it's going to change you've got to do something to get your income up and the thing is he has the ability to make the money and so I don't care if he takes a temporary job gone or of race car team building race cars for 2 years and you know he's going to go on a bunch but it's not going what he wants to the rest of his life I don't want travel like that but for 2 years I got to that get my house straightened up here or we go live to a town where I can just be a restoration high and mechanic and make a gram which actually you could do in a metro area I mean if he was a c. What he called certified. No he's not here to help and we had to he's really good at what he does and you know he you yeah he's been doing a lot of custom stuff it sounds like Ok right and exactly I'm not obviously like you're depending on the area you know you to get really high rollers or you don't have you know but showing oh yeah you're going to have to get to a market where there's guys that are people that are willing to pay that to work on a car as well and they work on specialty cars what amounts to or is going to move backwards racecourse out of the equation I don't care. Which one you do but I all I'm telling you is you have a math problem and you only way to solve the math problem is with is income to you're not able to work that's what you told me and so this is not going to go away until you address that issue a thanks for the call open tones of AAA 825-5225 Robbie's in Lowville Kentucky hi Robbie Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show paid a fair you better than I deserve what's up. I want my 1st time speak for they're sitting by at our church and there were 2 steps and we are on Baby steps are out now and I can always say that snowball on. Who had a bit of a car issue hit us so we our engine went out and. They were basically in the want to think it's very thing that's what I'd do that is making Court decision when it comes to be a Coke and so we're just trying to figure out. And what the best route to go to handle this would be a question of a car that the engines out on where you mean out of blue. One of the I believe it's a bunk at that went out so they basically told it that shot needed more than. A blown head gasket doesn't mean it replaced the engine. Well he said they would but that's what he called it and he said there's either a huge How many miles are on one car. A little over 150000 what kind of car. I think the cheapest route is to get the head fixed at the head gasket fix you can pull the heads and do that I am he may not want to do that you may have to find a different mechanic that wants the doesn't want to sell you a new engine but. I mean I don't know that vehicle I don't turn wrenches any more but I have blown head gasket does not institute it does not necessitate a come to complete engine replacement now he told me the engine at 3000 miles aren't there probably not much there I mean if you did you know we did the heads if you know the compression might blow it but I I think you just fix the car you need a new mechanic It sounds to me like it's going to be your cheapest route to get out of this so you gotta do it on the cheap get it on the cheap You got to fix it enough to sell it anyway that are used engine from a junkyard want to but I'm thinking just have the heads. And me may didn't need a different mechanic to do that.
