And is the status symbol of choice Hi I'm Dave Ramsey your house this is common sense for your dollars and cents gods and Grandma's ways of handling money but it turns out common sense is so rare it's like having a superpower so it's marketable today in the u.s. And we have proven that thank you for joining us open phones at triple 88255225 that's triple 88 to find the 5225 Karen starts this hour in Los Angeles Hi Karen welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show tell it there and being Or you could say better than I deserve what's up in your world well I recall I got a new job that pays pretty well though in moving my husband and I and 2 dogs to Texas but we do have about 36000 dollars that we want to get rid of in the next 12 months so we're trying to figure out whether we should rent how one bedroom for about a $1000.00 or try to find a room and a house for about a 100 and yet we just we're not sure which way to go oh well room a house with dogs sounds interesting. But you know the dogs. And very bad the prolonged Ira I mean very little my dog I was just asking if you're going to move in somebody's house with a room or you know yet if you got that option. Well it looks like we do there the roommate situation where they would allow dogs Ok cool and so what your new job pay about $50000.00 a year and what your husband I mean I can about 20 plus commission. How much commissions. While I'm not sure yet depends on how well I know that anybody wants a thank you Julie nothing is going like 20. Now I'm thinking it's going to be in the range of $30.00 to $40.00 if the 1st year they're welcome so roughly we're going bump up towards $100.00 m. And Europe a alertly 6 in one year doing that and you can either in some of them for a 1000 or you can rent something for $600.00 The difference being $400.00 which is $4800.00 a year so this is a $5000.00 filing right. Up to you I mean if you can pay off 36 and be on the other until it's final It may be better quality of life it's not it's not a deal breaker Ok but not if you tell me is $600.00 or or 2000 I tell you you know $600.00 but it's close enough that it's not you know the $400.00 a month is not going to keep you from paying off the 36 if something keeps you from doing it all because your husband and you're getting commissions or yacht and watch your budget or something else is going to come up it's not going to be rammed to break your back on this one with the numbers you gave me does that make sense and yet that that you know I think I'm just wearing out of the much about. The whole movie Well no I don't know if it's worrying you're just being very intense and very intentional because the reason for the move is to get your freaking life back and get this debt paid off right and so you don't want to screw that up that's not worrying that's being smart you're thinking through every little thing you're squeezing every little thing and it be Ok if you want to call an adventure and say one year we're going to the roommate thing and after that we're going to be fine and then we'll go do something else so you can either one is Ok with me because the deal is it's not a big enough spread in your question to affect your goal you can still hit your goal either way and then you've just got to look at it and go you know what's this mean to us at our stage in life I'm old and grumpy and the chances of me working out something in a roommate situations 0. So I would be written something to get human beings away from me you know that kind of thing so that's just different out I mean I'm you know when I was young and for you know an adventurous it might be fun you know but that doesn't sound fun to me but you could be funding you with me is whether Sam Kansas City had Britney Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show Hi Thank you for taking my call sure what's up I have a quick question and I currently live I like about a week ago. And I'm debating on if I should withdraw my profit sharing in one k. To pay off the bone no right now I think you know now are you bankrupt if you don't know Ok how much debt if you got. A car payment it was not the payment but about there are certain Now $1000.00 yes $13000.00 and more when I ask you about $37000.00 and credit card about $4000.00 I should get 54 all right and then. What are you making now the new job the New Delhi 65 fell been good for you what you don't. Quality Assurance How old are you can you have been are you killing a good job right me excellent Ok. And how much is in your retirement account I don't have anything no matter what you want to cash out Oh I think 100000 Ok if you kept looking for it actually be more next month how much are we talking about cashing out. I like open could catch all of it but I can take completely pay off my car which is still much darling 13000 and you'll cash out 13000 bucks not not your car I'm talking about optic sharing all this out of the whole thing next month the 16000 next month you know. I'm not going to print things Sure let's call it like Spain because I'm tired of this Ok 161-6000 here's what happens if you cash out the 16000 you're going to get a 10 percent penalty plus your tax rate which is 22 percent Ok. Now and that means you're going to hit be hit for 32 percent so mathematically it's like saying Hey Dave I want to get out of debt so bad I'm willing to borrow money at 32 percent interest and you and I would both instantly say that's a bad idea Ok so now we're not going to cash it out we're going to work our way through this debt and you've got a great new job you're making more money you're going to completely focus on this and beans and rice rice and beans maybe you have $54000.00 and that you're single $27.00 you make $65.00 you should be debt free and to yours. And you can do this I'll show you how but I want you to take that money don't give the government a 3rd of it could oh yeah it ain't worth it you know because that's what you're doing that's what you're doing I mean you've given up a 3rd of your money just to make a little bit of progress and it Dunning solve your problem that what solve the problem is that you're now paying attention and you're making good money so congratulations good stuff I must send you a copy of the book The Total Money Makeover to show you exactly step by step how to attack this jump on Dave Ramsey dot com Click smart investor and those guys will help you they don't you know a lot of brokers will help with a little small account like you've got but our guys will help because they have to take small accounts or I won't endorse them and so on let them be smart Mr pros and click smart Vester get a smart Mr Pro in your area the help you do a direct transfer rollover into a good mutual funds with your old retirement and that money you're 27 when you're 37 you'll look up and that's 16000 to be 100. Ads have a quick question I recently got married and I have currently but he does not life insurance policy and also have pointed to 5000 in a retirement account. So obviously before I was married I had the beneficiary set a different way now that I'm married I was sure I should be looking to give my life at one over the other whether it be like insurance policy versus the retirement one of the pros and cons of each Where else would it go. I have a son from a previous relationship so he's 17 Saudis for the next you know few years going to college a whole school I would want some of it to go to him good and I would go to hers I just didn't know it was a benefit to give her the life insurance versus the retirement kind of. If you give her the life insurance that's tax free if you give her the retirement she takes it out it will be taxable if it's a not is a traditional account now it's not a Roth right yet I started putting in Roth but the majority of it is sitting in traditional right now so when an inherited Ira as you remove money from it is taxable for whoever gets it but at which would she be able to take that money out of me at Leo It's sound but she paid taxes with no penalty gotcha and I have one last question so either what you could you know it sounds to me let me just thought idea and then you cue on and decide for yourself you got to pull this off but I've got this weird over the top all in opinion about marriage like for richer for poorer in sickness and in health and of the all my worldly goods I pledge. And so let's pretend you're 17 year old was $27.00 my my personal but it's just a personal belief is that my wife is in front of grown kids. Ok Ok even if you she's the 2nd wife Ok. And so you know but you not not necessarily 100 percent but I'm a my primary is to her that's Ok my secondary would be to grown kids and your kids not quite grown so you know if I'm looking at your numbers through that lens I'm probably going to 850 to the wife for 65 beneficiary to the teen which would get him mom through school and set him up and I'm probably adjusting that when he's 27. Gace I was just trying to figure out I kind of agree with you I was just trying to figure out maybe output because he would need a liquid you know who would need a liquid money so it's all liquid it I mean they can get you I just got my taxes on so it's not really for 65 it's more like 350 gosh that's and I have one last question of course insurance because I travel a lot for work and they cover me when I travel outside the country for insurance purposes when it comes like help but when I do personal travel I've never really thought about it so I just want to what you're trying to do was on getting own having insurance when you travel in regards to like more for health reasons than reimbursing for like travel expenses now I have never bought that when I travel internationally I just I but again I'm in a cash position to cover it if something came up that my personal policy would not cover on international I did have a friend get sick and in France and it cost him a boatload for got home so you know he's kind of wishing he had that insurance at that point but you know you just got to you got to ascertain what you think your risks are in that situation another friend get sick on a mission trip in Africa come to think of it to him pop into my head as I'm saying this and start to get worried right now but not an absolute. I've never bought it so I. It's not to say it's necessarily a rip off I would just look at it and go This is like travel insurance I don't generally buy travel insurance I figure if I can't go on the trip because of something and that completely breaks me a publishing of being on a trip in the 1st place so I's just to stinking expensive you know I'm spending too much on the trip if it's that big my whole world is tilted because I don't go on this trip after I paid for it than a publisher and I've been going so I don't buy travel insurance very often now if I had a huge big thing we did a safari in Africa for 3 weeks last summer I did put a little travel insurance on that because it was massive and the cost was up there to Sharon's. Christmas present so there you go as w. Washington wants it James is laughing now well if it isn't so open phones at AAA 8 to 552 to 5 Lindsay is in Atlanta Lindsay Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Hi Thank you so much for taking my call my pleasure How can I help well I my question actually piggyback very nicely on college. I am an avid listener and my 5th them on know that and know if you come to me out and I'm actually thinking your house would be able to help. He was that Lee widowed even her early forty's with 5 Kogan still at home. And her husband actually died on. Flight over. And he was left with 2 and heritage for a one page and he that not if he'd been called thing about what he can do it and I feel like it incorrect. But what I really want to know what are the options with an inherited or a long tape because you think of that it could get into her name one thing that that paper and I'll keep on it. But but if he takes anything out for putting it in her name he doesn't pay any penalty is that accurate or you can't really roll it into your name it's not really an option and you think that the only thing that could happen is she could cash it all out pay the taxes on it and then start investing it in her name and whatever she invested in her name was there but you can't roll an entire air diary into your name and everything and you do have r. And d. On it which is called required minimum withdrawals Ok And so you have to do the required minimum withdrawals and. They're not huge but she's got to take some of it every year and that's based on a table based on her age and so forth so how much is in this put much money in these accounts. For one case one of them at the about 100 income than any other line of thought. And no life insurance no and no I know life and no will go on here with a guy with and then he would last within that beaucoup by life and who knew how to well a man I'm sorry that's so sad a 5 kids what's the range of ages on the kids. All the home though it can and her younger. Ok. And so does she have a career. She is getting both of you created by the kid and then she actually mine and keeping the band a couple $1000.00 a month who can on mine have children are home and so could be home with her cat and be raising her kids she that you know could be her motive income right now. That's not sure how she's making those ins meet that doesn't add up in my mind but . I hope she can make it that I hope she can pull that together and not have to carry through and burn all of this money at one in one pile try trying to pull off on doing so if she's not if the so Security plus her online income is not enough to sustain the family and she's burning on this savings using some of it then you've got to do some simple division and say when's the money going to run out so if she's got you know she got 200000 bucks and so she's been in $20000.00 a year she's got 10 years. Yes She's actually she's actually moving between the Social Security and her income and what she was trying to figure out was a set of what to do with these for a long time as the debt that she has remaining to her would be just the mortgage and one car that we talked about or that you know on the car I would take enough out and pay the taxes on that there's no penalties on them inherited all right Ok so I would take enough out and put the touch on to pay off the car. Ok today and that's going to help then how her monthly work because I want to monthly to work without burning into this and then I would love to I would get with a smart roster pro and set these and you can move them around but you just don't put them into your name they don't have to state what they were in and so put them in good growth stock mutual funds and let's let them grow as much as possible then it's there and at any point all you've got there by the taxes and not any penalties to do anything like kids' college or future or whatever and she needs some money for something it's they are and I want to try to keep from touching it in the monthly budget and it sounds like you're getting I'm sorry she's facing this Thanks Lindsay appreciate your call and this is what I promise you. Guys let's talk about that timeshare pitch that you fell for that I promised you exclusive access to travel anywhere you want tropical beaches mountains go to was or whatever oh my gosh they claimed it was the affordable way to travel and then they convinced you it was a good investment but here's the deal any auction site for your exact timeshare and see what it's selling for it's listed for a dollar with no bits that's not a good investment now I know I'm just adding salt to a very old wound but look if you tried calling the resort and they won't take it back if you tried selling it and no one will buy it call time share exit team times your exit team will get you out you'll have to be patient it can be a long process and it costs money but it warps they're so confident and their exit service that if they don't get you out you get a 100 percent refund call 844999 exit it's free to talk 844999. It's good art so the next time you might jettison and stay gone. I'm sure that the next time this happens or if you had your degree and you landed in an excellent career position you might stay gone. Possibly . And if. So how much do you like finishing your degree. You know one of those I really really want to do that thing you know much do you relax a year 10 years. About a year and a half Ok cool what will it cost. $25000.00 or you just paid off $100.00. Yeah. You know what or so you can cash flow $24.00 right I believe now I'm I know so I want to I would do it if you know it will cash flow but if you want to cash flow it it sounds to me like it's got some marketplace value and it's got some value in the under the heading of I just want to do it. Yeah and it's whatever if it's a $24000.00 item you want to purchase if you set it in the middle of the floor and burned it you can afford it if you pay cash for it now that your debt for you have your emergency fund and blush Yeah and so I go down the question for us is. There is no concrete idea how you think in the future if we made it if it you know and that's what I did it if you paid cash for it and it's after you're out of debt and after you have an emergency fund by definition you can afford it and there's some percentage chance you'll use it it's not you're not asking to spend 240000 in your household it's 24000 it's a doable with the numbers you're giving me it's not out of control it's nice huge amount me if you want to spend 240000 which are if you're going use about question your sanity. Yeah right I didn't really want to 4000 as a percentage of your world you just told me this wonderful story of how you already paid off over 100 this is a 4th of that. Yeah you it do it but pay cash for it pay cash for it or don't do it and and then hopefully you'll get some use out of it. When as Sharon and I got married she had one semester of school left to graduate and did not graduate that did not get her degree. Fast forward a couple of years we had our 1st child 3 years into marriage and I had made a promise to her daddy that she would go back and finish so we start working that out so she drives back and forth to Knoxville all summer long from Nashville 2 and a half hours away to finish her degree she has a degree in child and family studies she has never used it and except for the fact that she is a full time mom and that's ultimately of that degree right but the point is she got the degree she wanted the degree we could afford it we paid cash for it and we couldn't afford it when we got married that's why we didn't do it so you know it's something sometimes there's a reason to do academics because it's expanding your life it's a life goal you want the completion of that sheepskin on the wall sometimes that's there what we don't want to do is use that as an excuse to go to an ar $15000.00 in debt and call that education that's not education that's just stupidity but you're not talking about that you're talking about a life goal completion you're talking about and there is a good chance you're going to use the degree at some point the future and it is a very reasonable purchase within the confines of your household numbers and you're paying cash all of those things I do it so very good very good discussion thanks for calling in sick what's happened is let me tell you this happens particularly in families that do not have a history of college education if you're the 1st one to go to college in your family like kind of a thing Ok. You have you don't have people around you to keep you from doing stupid stuff. But if you've got family that this is the 3rd or 4th generation of college education they'll grab you by the ear and go no no no no no no that's dumb don't do education dumb but if you're from a family where you've never done that or in a community where college education is not normal or on a social economic rung of the ladder word college education is not normal you hear this message and it's a lie here's the message you're here education is so important that you can pay any amount for it as long as you get it and it'll work out that's a lot so why you cannot go 250000 dollars in debt to get a master's degree in social work and go to the state and Mike $32000.00 a year is a caseworker that's stupid that's stupid you don't do that but if you've heard vague things of the way out of my neighborhood the way out of my broken family culture the way out of this thing that is my life into a better life is education and therefore all education at any expense in any subject is worth it then you get $1.00 trillion dollars in student loan debt and people walking around whining like zombies they're so in debt that they can't breathe with a degree in left handed puppetry I've got a Ph d. In gender studies and on $400000.00 in debt you're screwed you're just screwed you know but somebody should grab you by your ears and boxed them in said no that's dumb see we can't do education dumb as well as doing a smart. But I I most often find it say I grew up in a neighborhood where a lot of the kids that I grew up with didn't go to college and stock encounter relate to this I can hear these messages coming from teachers and coming from policymakers and even coming from academics to say education is the answer education is your way out. No. Knowledge. Is your way out and knowledge that is applicable in the marketplace that pays you more than it cost you to get it and. That's where education your way out you might be much better off getting a welding certificate than a ph d. And left and it puppetry this is the Dave Ramsey Show. From 4 to 637 f.m. 11 50 am on. Dot com. Am telling. Me I'm keeping my pleasure I'm going to help. Your name on a card for crying out because you don't go babe. Thank you. Mike but. We are on to. 522-0000 in the car we had a car breakdown a 1000000 and we still have so we ended up I know many of them and we're still working like that and we are just really hungry to get rid of our a loan for a minivan and it's worth about 20 Well you know about 16 on it and we just don't love it and we're just kind of torn what to do how much debt do you have other than the minivan. Other than the many that we have $25000.00 to grad school and that about $6000.00 credit cards and that should be paid off in 2 months . So all of this will be paid off if you kept them anyway and within 2 years. Yeah and that's where we kind of debate because my how can I go back and forth on your you know it's not so if you. Would you get. Well we have a few options and we have a family member that would be able to borrow their car for a few months so we pay them cash well and then you buy now and my theory that you know I bought this car with you mean to us that you then I guess we got burned so bad you are that we had drained what we had to spend and that's why we ended up taking no longer than many of the money you bought a brand new minivan you know we've got to you've gone you know you're new to us Ok so you bought another used car yeah so used car not bad bad Used cars are bad. Right so if you got rid of this minivan and you drove a loaner for a little while then you would save up and pay cash for a used many van. Or the different car we don't love that and we were you know kind of our family we thought that was the right thing in the long term what not to buy if you were debt free and had to add $10000.00 right now but I don't know what we kind of need a mortgage because otherwise that would kind of tell you what you need to do with this because it's this the minivan is is not really I mean they're selling it is doesn't change your life it's not it's not you know it's half your debt not even half your debt it's a 3rd of your dad if you want to sell it and drive the loaner for a while and get out of debt I don't have a problem with that but let's for God's sakes have a target where we go you need a plan where you're going and it does this step get you to where you're going that's what we're after and that's the big issue you know set yourself a goal and then ask yourself what has to be true that's not true today for me to hit that goal I make 60000 hours here I want to make 160000 are here Ok what has to be true. About me and my life that's not true today for that to happen for me to be out of debt and have a car that I like what has to be true and then you could say well one of things that would speed up me hitting my goal is selling this minivan driving a loaner so that I can end up 3 years from now I'm driving this kind of a car paid for in cash that is less than or all my cars are less than half my annual income and that's what you ask yourself so I can't really all I hear is I don't really like the man but I went into debt to get the van because the other man was breaking down too much you need the side were gone that's what you need to decide Ryan's with us in Los Angeles Hey Ryan welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Sure what's up. Well my wife and they are. Buying a home BUSY. In our markets so it's a bit over 5 so we have all your phone is breaking up in speak directly into a place again but not we have a portion of our money right now. Like you write about and avoid and if you have a specific recommendation as far out much of it intercepted it there and as we keep it every month should all of that going on as well the more you put in there the more volatility you add to your goal but the more money you'll make as I make sense. And I mean you might make 10 or 12 percent on your. S. And p. Fund I think which you can look at if you want to go back as an example and this might help you decide this look at the s. And p. For the past 20 years and see how many years it did not make at least one percent in the year because that's what your savings is making you. And if it's one year I don't know what the number is I haven't looked at it but the analogy what we're doing here is we're measuring the risk that you're taking if it was 10 years out of 20 that it did not make at least one percent which is not the case Ok but that would mean this is a really risky endeavor that makes sense but if it was done one year one time out of 20 freakin years it did not make at least one percent in the year or 2 times out of 20 years it did not make Well that's a risk it's not that's an overwhelming risk at that point it's like 10 percent of the time it doesn't make more than I'm making in my savings on putting the vast majority of it in there that doesn't make sense. So go back and look at that and that could give you some comfort looking at the track record and what would have to happen for this to not work out to my benefit on what what print What's the probability that I don't come out ahead as a result of being in the s. And p. Versus being in savings and the probability is pretty high when you're under 5 years. But over 5 years you probabilities pretty high you will come out ahead by putting almost all of it in there that's my you know anecdotal look at it but if you want to actually dissect and comb through the numbers that wouldn't hurt you it's actually a good exercise for you to learn to analyze these things and do the critical thinking Anders in San Diego how you Andrew welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Thank you Dave Hope you doing well how can I help today. I've paid off. About $60000.00. Using your step. So I'm kind of doing a 34 and 56 combo right now I'm sorry 456 combo right now and the one question I have about Baby Step 6 I have rental property and a primary mortgage and when it comes to you know throw in large sums of money to get a house paid off quickly which one do I choose from and if there if there are similar in balances I go to the house my residence Ok and the way I did that was a simple risk management question if the world completely unraveled in your life and you lost either your rental property or your house because of everything went sideways which one would you rather lose would rather lose rental property than my house sometime house off the rust because a 100 percent of forecasters occur on a home with a mortgage so we don't want to we don't want to keep the mortgage on the house now but if you've got a rental that's 50000 bucks owed on it and you know 400000 on your house you might reach over nocturnal out Ok And part of your argument over that discussion I should say that I have with my wife is well if we pay the rent off 1st. Now that that's we can tyrant money free and clear coming in as opposed to only half of it. Man and having to go back out to mortgage so that balance it's the same dollars that if you got a $2500.00 house payment or you have a $25.00 an hour payment on a mortgage on a rental in either one of those frees up $2500.00 when it's gone. That's true it's just it's just one of the cost savings and $1.00 of them is an income producing asset but if the end of the day the smoke clears all the way to the bottom line of your personal p. And l. You got the same benefit either direction. But better so I just pay off the house if they're pretty close and balances or the home is smaller in a balance but if you've got a dinky but little rental debt and you can just knock it out like it's a big old car payment or something and then reach over and work on your house later that be fun to. Sit in with a 220000 dollar mortgage on your house and 260 or turn 10000 dollar mortgage on rental car house off 1st that's that's my reasoning on it so a good question man sounds like you're after and proud of you keep it up.
