Mayor, marty walsh. Last time i saw you was at the convention, and you had just you had just finished a speech, and you turned to me and said, the right teleprompter went out. Its true. It was out. And you still handled it flawlessly. Janet i dont think anybody at home could tell. Mayor walsh they said it could go down, so i went out there, and massachusetts was going crazy. I looked left, looked right, said i didnt back to the left. I think i trade a hundred times. Janet welcome to our world. It was a big moment for you. Did you like doing it . Were you thrilled . Were you scared . Mayor walsh i was nervous in the warmup, before practicing. I did you not really practice the speech, but standing up there, and then when i got up there, i felt really comfortable and great, and people around the country were unbelievable. After they found out like 26 Million People were watching, i was like, wow. By saying my name is marty walsh, and im an alcoholic. That is a very bold and private statement you made in front of 26 Million People. Mayor walsh it really was about talking about what i think that Hillary Clinton and her administration can do for people, about believing in Second Chances and about, you know, some of the programming that can happen under a Clinton Administration. And i think that one thing, not to get too much into it, but, you know, Hillary Clintons campaign is talking about issues and backing them up, and donald trump is using sound bites. And im and bostonians and massachusetts folks look and vote for not the party or the candidate, but vote for the person whos right for the job. Janet were going to get into that later. Your administration is under a lot of pressure right now from both the police unions, as well as communities of color. Is it just a question of politics, or is this a real problem here in boston . Mayor walsh i wouldnt necessarily i dont feel the pressure. I think that we have a lot of issues going on, and we work, weve been working at this commissioner, the police chief, the community, building that trust with the communities and police department. Right now, were dealing with body cameras, and were working on put nag Pilot Program. And really, whats interesting is all the discussion around the Pilot Program, when we really are putting a program in, toiths see how they work, what theyre going to do, what theyre going to tell us, and i think that, you know, the police unions, you know, they sent a letter the other day, theyre frustrated, too, and concerned. Janet there were harsh words in that letter. Were they right or exaggerating . Or mayor walsh i think a little bit of all. I think it has everybody to do with the rankandfile officers they represent. They hear it from their members and from their families. When you have an incident like what happened in dallas, obviously every Police Officer and their family, probably even more so than the officer, get concerned. Were going to make sure that theyre safe in boston. Janet it goes back to my original question. Is the pressure coming from other cities, or is there a problem or a problem here in boston that needs to be resolved, outside of whats mayor walsh i think theres some definitely some pressure coming from boston, but i think a majority of the pressure were seeing from around the country. I think people are watching the news and seeing whats happening in different cities around america, and theyre talking approximate it here on our streets. We havent had those incidents, and homely we never will, of policeinvolved shooting in our city streets. One thing in boston, we have a trend going down on arrests. We had a 15 reduction. This year were already at 12 reduction in arrests. That shows theres conflict resolution going on in the street rather than lot better than cities around america. But yet, the tension is going to be there. Ed sure. You just mentioned body cameras. Even your own Police Commissioner seems reluctant to embrace them long term. And you have to work out what it is. Is this Pilot Program just a farred is, or are you committed to the long term . Mayor walsh its a real program. I mean, i think that one thing we havent been able to see with the programs that have gone on around the country is what the result of those houston, texas. When you hear about arlington, texas, eliminated the body camera program, new york has a body camera. I think they have 35 officers out of 35,000 officers wearing them. So you cant gauge really how effective they are. Were going to have a pretty good sampling of 100 out of 2,100 officers. When i say 21, maybe 1700 are in the street. So were going to get a real good gauge of exactly how these work. Were going to put districts that theres a lot of interaction with people, and hopefully at the end of the program, the Pilot Program, well economic see what information we have and how does it work. Janet wed like to you look at the video. It is in chicago, but its a part of this discussion were having right now. Ed take a look. Janet the police turned off the camera just before the suspect is shot. How do you prevent this from happening . Police turning off cameras. Mayor walsh i mean, you cant. Somebody, there is an opportunity saying we dont want the camera on. I believe thats in the pilot, and they can shut it off. But theres no excuse for that, no answer for that. In that particular case, the chicago officer shot at an ongoing car. In boston, theres a policy you cant shoot at a car going by because of the repercussions. So that whole situation appears, and again, i dont want to get too much into it, because im not from chicago and im not the Police Commissioner, but itpp was handled completely wrong. Ed but you saw the difference there. It might not make sense to give the officer the ability to shut the camera off, because therefore, that gives him the ability to control it, edit it, and thats not real. Mayor walsh the Civil Liberties union will fight us on that, because theres going to be say if theres a person or police, i think we have to, Civil Liberties. Thats where you get into the legal battles and going back and forth. Ed but they should record that moment on the camera. Is for, to review all this information. You know, we have the Civil Liberties union who want body cameras, yet theres a time frame where they dont want them on too long. You cant have it both ways. Janet very quickly, in about four or five years, do you think most Police Officers will be wearing those Police Cameras . Mayor walsh i think theres going to be some sort of technology. I think it will change. At one point, there was a big fad to have dash comes, and that went away. I think there will be i also think in four or five years theres going to be a lot more cameras around in the city surveiling the city and the city. Ed is it fair to say middle class is one of your Biggest Challenges, one of your administrations Biggest Challenges . Mayor walsh i think middle class people are trying to move back in in crazy numbers. Ed all right. Lets talk about the culture of the schools. How do you keep the families and the tax base, and what you say, people are staying in the city, too . Mayor walsh one of the things so we have to find out obviously we know this is an issue, so now we have to work on those issues, because we want to make sure that kids of colors and kids that get into these schools choose these schools because they want to. The numbers are janet not because theyre afraid to. Mayor walsh the number of kids at the academies that are black kids, those numbers are a lot higher than latin schools. They have the option to go into latin school, but they choose the other skiles. Theres a fundamental issue there we have to deal with, more recently. Obviously, just real quickly, and then i think with the leadership now at latin school, really focused on dealing with the race, conversation, and dialogue in the school, i think well see changes. Ed pop quiz time. You ready . Mayor walsh im ready. Ed ready to take a swing, swing and a drive. Question one, what member of the Kennedy Family is asking people to stop calling donald trump crazy . Mayor walsh oh, um. Um. Ed silence is golden. Mayor walsh its one of bobbys oh, no, patrick. Ed you got there. This past week a federal judge upheld the sentence for former illinois governor rod blag geoff itch. What did he do . Mayor walsh he sold the senate seat. Ed that barack obama held in illinois back . . . Award winning interface. Award winning engine. The volvo xc90. The most awarded suv of the century. Fios is not cable. Were wired differently, which means we can fix things differently. Thanks for calling fios. This is ryan. You cant tell me this cord isnt in. Yes, mr. Mcenroe. See that cord . Just plug it into the connector on the right. So you can clearly see whats in and whats out . Oh absolutely. I like that. Tech support that lets your technician see the problem over your smartphone. Only from fios. Ed back with boston mayor marty walsh. Which had higher aspirations, just said this, and i quote, we have a path to run right up thing. Massachusetts politician, who said that . And win it. Mayor walsh oh, bill. Ed youre 33. Which outspoken massachusetts politician tweeted this, makes Death Threats because hes a pathetic coward who cant handle the fact that hes losing to the girl. Mayor walsh senator Elizabeth Warren. Ed youre 44. Here you go, for perfection. Question five, the red sox had a strikeout this week, and it was not on the field. What happened this week . Mayor walsh oh, the bobblehead. Ed wow, youre 55. You want this . You want to frame it . Very good mayor walsh listen, i was going to say, michael phelps. Ed right. Michael phelps to the table. Mayor walsh he has 23 gold medals right now, 22. Janet we were talking about national politics. Donald trump made what seemed to be a candid remark earlier this week, and it was about Hillary Clintongun rights lobby. Heres a part of it. Donald if she gets the pick for her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, i dont know. Jan he had was he inciting violence here . Mayor walsh you know something . This guy, every single thing he said, i know theres a lot of people that support him. Some people i know support him. He is not president ial material. The way he operates, the way he talks, the comment about isis yesterday, two days ago, i should say. You know, hes out there subtle remarks. What did he with the veterans, the vietnam veteran with the purple heart, if that was if that was Hillary Clinton, this thing would be talked about all day long. Hes running for president. I wish he would respect the office hes running for, and ive said it more than one time. You need to respect the office. Ed id like to go down two paths. The u. S. Attorneys office is going after two of your people, accusing them of extorting nonunion business. Do you think shes really come after you . Mayor walsh i mean, i dont know. Im waiting. Day, i dont know. Thats something youll have to ask her. Janet you think both of your theyre both members of your leadship team. Do you think that they will be found innocent . Mayor walsh i hope so. I mean, theyre both great people. They worked hard. Janet not guilty. Mayor walsh im hoping theyre found not guilty. Ed the other issue which is completely 180 degrees opposite that. Take a look at these legs. Mayor walsh nice legs. [laughter] janet he says. Ed i love the cargo shorts, but maybe the bigger pedestrians, how did that work . Is that going to happen zpwhen mayor walsh it worked well. People seemed very excited about it. I mean, at that point, this film thats taking place by a photographer was at 10 30 in the morning. So, i mean, they took pictures. And it was a great i think it was a great success. Were going to do some reviews and see. I think the businesses really have to drive it if they like it. I think they did well, and i think a lot of people liked the fact of being able to stroll around and not worry about janet i think people would like see new those shorts again. Mayor walsh oh, im going wear them again. Ed you have more than one pair . Mayor walsh of course i do. Ed so do i. Thank you to boston mayor marty walsh. Line karen does bostons advance Health Care System benef ed welcome back to o. T. R. Conveniently, we have a round tabling for the roundtable discuss. We have rob gray on. Marianne is here. You can see here. Rob gray is with us as well. Guys, thanks for joining us. Great to have you. Janet a couple of minutes ago, you heard donald trump, encouraging the gun lobby to take action basically. What did republicans not talking about democrats lets start with the republicans, what did they are a very important part of the republican coalition. But theyre independents, and theyre conservative democrats as well. And those voters can turn things in swing states. They help energize the base. They help get voters out. But i think trump made a big mistake, because he stepped on bad news about Hillary Clinton. And if you look at this august versus last august, trump has not dominated the news in a good way. He had his way other republican candidates. Hes had a tough, tough summer this summer. Janet but the fact he made that comment sort of suggesting, he claims it was just where hes talking about voting. Democrats took it another way. You even saw that expression on the face of one of his supporters behind him. He obviously took it the way a lot of people in the Clinton Campaign are taking it. And so did the secret service, whoer and viewed the campaign and met with them more than once, which donald trump said did not happen. Do to his chief and generalsly and others on other topics. But i think the real point here is that donald trump has now lost the benefit of the doubt with voters. Youve seen that in the polls. It started with, when he went after the reporter who had a disability. Then he went after the kanns. Not so much mccain and others because theyre political figures, and people expect that. But when he went after regular people, regular citizens, and attacked them personally, you now have seen this titanic shift amongst white women with college degrees, whic overwhelmingly win. That has been the whole shift in these polls. Its because of these personal attacks by donald trump. Almost nearly impossible for him to win them all back. And that is the difference in this race right now. So as his poll numbers have plummeted, hes gotten more nernl his attacks. If he stays there, hell get even more personal and responsible. If he goes uphill, too. Ed what both of you just said, pick occupy a point you said in your answer, when he brings up about the email and Clinton Administration getting preferential treatment from the state department, does it get lost in the mud . Is it too late for republicans to make it a key factor in november . No, i think its becoming a key issue. I think its a 10 out of 10 on the crisis scale for Hillary Clinton, because its not just donald trump and republicans. Its investigative journalists. There are new emails coming out t. Appears that access to the state department was for sale donors. So i think it is an important political issue. Can donald trump stay disciplined enough not to step on his own story . He hasnt proven to be able to do that thus far. Ed no, you seem to be saying no. Come, no one at this table weve all been on both sides of that equation. Weve all gotten those calls and made those calls. Hey, can you tell me the name of can you connect me with weve all done it, ok. Its done all the time. Can you interview someone for a job . The meeting never happened in that email. Happened. I dont even think the person got a job. A billionaire whos given money to her foundation wants to meet with the policy person at the state house that impacts the country, that he has a frnl and person issue. It never happened, ok . Thats the point here. But they were ready to make it happen. They were open for business. Rob, you and i both know how all this works, as does everybody else at this table. You get the calls, you make the calls. What happens after that are judgment calls. But the consistent is, every time the republicans say, oh, my god, the house is on fire, laws have been broken, go to jail, none of its ever proven. So distraction, yes. Death knell, no, not at all. Janet lets move on to the debate. Donald trump seems to be willing to do them, three debates. Will he and can he get his way like did he during the primary . Well, i could see donald trump not showing up for any of the debates or maybe one. The reason is, we all know one universal truth, bullies are republican primary debates because there were 17 people. Now its oneonone. Maybe oneonthree or two or so. He cant do that. And i think Elizabeth Warren really hit him where he hit. He cant believe hes losing to a girl. If he got on that debate stage with Hillary Clinton, the only thing he could do was attack her personally and that would backfire. Janet could you see him not doing the debates if he doesnt get his way . I think hes going to have to do them. He was a big fish in the small pond last i couldnt remember. They were in a competitive stance in terms of Network Versus network, looking for rating, so he could pull it off. We have a president ial debate commission. Its bipartisan. I think its tough to avoid that schedule. The debate schedule is put out before the nfl schedule, and he said the nfl told him they couldnt believe it happened either, and i got a letter from the nfl, which never happened either. Wow, ok. Ed lets talk about bostons maris, marty walsh. We had a lengthy conversation. Police contracts, race issues, whats his biggest problem . I think he did a great job this morning laying out all the things hes been working on and all the problems hes tackling. And i think he gets a lot of credit for that. I think the problem for him has been several issues that keep coming up that dominate all of the accomplishments and overtake him. I think there are a couple, obviously, and theyre all distracting. But he spends a lot of time in the communities, a lot of time in the neighborhoods, oneonone time thats served him well. Message they would do well. I think the Biggest Issue is schools and keeping the middle class in the city and giving, you know, the lower class in the city hope to move up. And its obviously been an issue thats in the news, and hes going to have to spend a lot of time on it. Jed we continue on the record. Stay with us. Monday morning on the eye, classes are about to start. Three hacks that could help students cut costs. Fios is not cable. Were wired differently. So we wired the wagners house with 100 meg internet. Which means that in the time it takes mr. Wagner to pour a 20 oz. Cup of coffee, and right now you can get 100 meg internet with equal upload and dowloads speeds, tv and phone for just 69. 99 per month online. Cable cant offer internet speeds this fast at a price this good. Only fios can. Janet bill walsh handed in his signature this week to get on the candidate for a vicepresident ial candidate. Will the i dont think so. They look better in november than september, october. I agree with rob. Ed beth week, rob . Charlie baker. Are we talking about him . Ed no. Any controversies, no. So as a republican governor of massachusetts, thats a good place to be, good week for him. U. S. A. Women olympians, who have won more than half the medals for the United States thus far. Jed they have been strong. Janet gymnasts are to show you one thing that seemed to create a stir at fenway park. Its the bobblehead doll with david ortiz. On the right is the one that it was supposed to be. On the left is the one that it was. That certainly look like black face, doesnt it . The only thing was david ortizs profanitylaced response to it that nobody could repeat. [laughter] i think the red sox made a bigger deal than of it than they needed. To they could have just said production defect and done it four hundred million dollars. Thats how much Charter Schools will drain from massachusetts Public Schools this year. Four hundred million siphoned from local districts that desperately need it. Four hundred million that wont fund more science and technology, arts or preschool, counseling, or smaller class sizes. Four hundred million unavailable to the ninetysix percent of students who dont attend Charter Schools. Lets improve Public Schools for all students, vote no on question 2. Mom im a mom, not a millionaire. Permission. I can give hugs. But i cant give millions of dollars to a campaign. Vo but thats the way to get Kelly Ayottes attention.
