Gusts over 35 to even 45 on the cape and islands. And that is why youre under a wind advisory until 3 00 p. M. There. Be aware of that. A lot of rain that can loosen the soil a bit and the trees can easily topple over. The other thing with this wind coming out of the north and east, were watching high tide at 4 06 today. There could be minor snrashover. Thats why Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 6 00 p. M. Be aware of that. The same spots that saw it yesterday probably will see it again today. Tonight temperatures drop into the 40s, maybe a couple of 30s out there. Its a cold one. Then tomorrow we rebound back into maybe the mid to upper 50s down along the south shore. Still the mid 50s in boston. Its cloudy still, maybe some breaks of sun the farther north and west you go. But there still could be showers unfortunately around. Let me show you this on the future cast here on sunday. Notice the best bet for the showers and drizzle mainly confined to the east coast of massachusetts. Bill fine in the past several months, weve been embroiled in heated battles over immigration, proposals to build giant walls along our borders, battles over marriage rights, pitting religion against court rulings, battles over surging wage and income gap, and whether our environment should take a back seat to economic growth. With this as a backdrop, only the most optimistic might have predicted pope francis could have made a positive dent in our National Conversation. After all, the 78yearold pontiff had his own problems dealing with a church beset by clergy sex scandals, declining attendance, and an image of increasing irrelevance in a secular society. In five short days, the popes exhausting itinerary encompassed memorable stops at the centers of power, a call on the white house, and speeches to congress and the u. N. Most notably, his trip included a focus on the marginalized in our society, lunches with the homeless, visits with prisoners, and so many personal moments with the sick, the lost, and the heartbroken. Pope francis met with a small group of victims of the Church Sex Abuse scandal while infuriating many others for initially praising American Bishops for their courage in the crisis. He eventually surprised critics, acknowledging that some bishops were involved in a coverup and pledging to hold all accountable, including bishops and other Church Leaders who hid the abusers. He will ultimately be judged by his actions among those who hope his pledge is fulfilled. Conservatives and progressives all found things to like and dislike about the popes message. And while Pope Franciss trip was aimed at encouraging american catholics, his visit ultimately helped elevate our National Conversation be caretakers of creation. Rise above differences. But he expects everything to be back on track by december. Now your storm team 5 forecast with meterologist danielle vollmar. Danielle it is all about the rain, the Cool Temperatures, and the strong winds. And the rain impact looks like this. This morning, its on the high side as most people waking up to some showers and some winddriven rain. As we get through the afternoon, its more of a medium side because i think south and east of the mass pike, the best chances of seeing this wall of rain come to you. And then by sunday, its a low risk of showers, really the east coast of massachusetts, the best chances and southeastern mass are seeing it. And notice on monday, we actually dry things out. So well see more sunshine by monday. Seen since midnight only 5 100ths of an inch, about 16 100ths of an inch in hyannis. Were seeing more rain the farther south and east you go. That is the trend over the next 48 hours. So putting in today as well as for tomorrow, we could see upwards of a half an inch of rain maybe in southeastern mass but a lot less the farther north and west you go. See how these showers are kind of shrinking in aerial coverage . Theyre also moving from the west to the east and kind of wrapping around. So were going to see more of these start to pivot to the south and east. There is a heavy band right now just to the south of boston. Near weymouth, you can see along the south shore there. It moves all the way to brockton and back to milford. Be aware of that. Could have a couple of downpours with any of these showers that get going. Theyre associated with a stationary front. We also have very strong winds out of the north and east today. As we step you into the day, what happens is the showers continue to pivot more towards the south and east. So by, say, 1 00 or 2 00, theyre starting to lose their energy. Were still socked in with the clouds everywhere. But we dont have as much showers around. Thats why im saying its not a washout of a day like yesterday. A lot of you should be able to do things outside. I would still grab an umbrella though because with this air being so moist, we could see some showers develop at any given point. The other thing is these very strong winds, you can see gusting up to 35 Miles Per Hour now on nantucket. These winds are already causing some damage. I want to show you some of these pictures from twitter. See these boats kind of pushed off shore and kind of flipped over from the really strong winds there. Also, thank you, lisa, for tweeting me this. You see the boat knocked over. Those winds could cause problems especially at the cape and the islands today. Thats why that wind advisory is in place until 3 00 p. M. Today. Expecting wind gusts in excess of 45 Miles Per Hour. Of course, when you have a saturated ground, that can quickly topple over some trees. The wind also going to back in same area that saw the minor splashover yesterday could see it at 4 00 today when the high tide is coming. Thats why the Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect during that time. The showers continue through start to wind down as we head in boston. Look at these high temperatures though. Only in the 50s so its quite cool. And then what happens tomorrow, we still have a lot of clouds around. And unfortunately the clouds really hang around until monday. Watching joaquin but notice its taking that northeast track. No problem for us. It will start to weaken, too, as waters.
