Were standing on harrison street between second and first. You can see the water just paterson avenue, but emergency crews are here on the scene along with police just blocking off rose and trying to make sure residents blocking off roads and trying to make sure residents out and about this early hour stay away. This happened about 4 00 this morning. The city says residents may experience a loss of water or low pressure here in this area. Theyre asking drivers to also avoid this area. There are road closures here as wel here approved a 5. 2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system here in hoboken. This came after a series of water main breaks last year and earlier this year. So unfortunately residents are used to this. As for this latest issue, suez water is responding, but theyre not sure exactly when this water main will be repaired, so well keep you updated throughout the morning. A study which appears in the journal of academics of pediatrics found an average of 50 children end up in the hospital everyday because of stroller or carrier accidents. Firefighters race to rescue several people trapped in a burning building. More this morning. Ali. Reporter investigators have been here all morning trying to figure out what started that fire that sent six people to the hospital, including one 5 yearold girl. A fire, i got people trapped on the second floor. Itll be a working fire at washington avenue. Reporter trapped on the second floor, several people in 109 washington avenue in little ferry were saved by firefighters and the building caught fire. Driving down the road and as i was passing this house, i heard a big pop. It was some type of explosion. Not sure if it came from the garage or the cars parked in the driveway. And then the whole house was engulfed in flames. Reporter lieutenant chris bowles says when he arrived all he could see was black smoke engulfing the building and he ran to help. Just started trying breaking pull several people out of the building. Reporter you can see dozens of neighbors standing in panic as victims are taken away on stretchers. The lieutenant says fathers were dropping children down to him from the second floor window. Got a ladder to the second floor, and we were able to pull out some people out of the top floor also. Reporter flames were out by around 1 30 this morning, but water is still flowing to the building to keep it cool. No word yet on the extent of those six peoples injuries. Cbs 2s Andrea Grymes has more live from the scene. Andrea. Reporter well, cindy and chris, a bit of good news from the last time we checked in with you. There was water all over this block. It is quickly receding here on harrison street. Were between first and second streets. A big improvement from just about a half an hour ago. The communications spoke moments ago with the Communications Director for the city of hoboken. He says crews are working to isolate the water main break here at first and harrison and water pressure should gradually be coming back. This water main break a 16inch main were told broke just before 4 00 this morning. The city was warning residents that they may experience a loss of water or low water pressure. We did speak with a few residents just walking up and about early this morning who said they had no or just a few drops, if that. The city is also telling drivers to avoid this area. There are several roads that are also closed. Coincidentally, earlier this month the city council here approved a 5. 2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system here in hoboken. This comes after a series of water main breaks last year and earlier this year. So unfortunately residents here in hoboken are pretty used to sights like this one. No word yet when water will be back on, but it should gradually be coming back, at least the water pressure to residents in this area. Well, the families of an imam and his assistant murdered in queens got a first look at the man accused of killing prosecutors say saturday he gunned down queens Imam Maulama Akonjee and his close friend and assistant. Hes also accused of hitting bicyclist david hunter less than a mile away as he fled the murder scene. Now, hunter was able to give police part of the license plate number and Police Tracked down morell. He was in his face, you know, he had a sign this person who is not under control. Lets go right to the scene now and cbs 2s Andrea Grymes. Andrea. Reporter well, cindy and chris, a rough morning for a lot of residents here in hoboken, waking up with no water or though. Here on harrison street at first avenue, most of the water is gone now after this water main break that happened before 4 00 this morning. A big improvement. Lets show you some video from just about an hour ago when we first got here. There was water covering the streets, an several of them in this area and several of them in this area were closed. This was a huge break, were told, a 16inch water main. The city says residents may low water pressure. They were also telling drivers to avoid this area. But since then paterson avenue has reopened and some of the streets around here are gradually starting to reopen. Crews were working to isolate the break, and the city told us that water pressure should gradually be returning to normal. We spoke with a few residents earlier this morning. Take a listen. Got three drops, thats about it. Thank god we had water in the refrigerator. If we didnt have that, there would reporter a lot of people here in hoboken are used to scenes like this one. A lot of water main breaks last year an earlier this year. Earlier this month, in fact, the city council here approved a 5. 2 million bond ordinance to fund upgrades to the aging water main system. Back out here live, suez water is here on the scene working to make repairs. But on sunday it will turn into a whole lot more. A Community Festival to mark the 25th anniversary of the Crown Heights riots. The festival promises fun for all ages, with food, music, rides and even arts and crafts. But some say its an insensitive way to recognize one of the worst race riots in the citys history. My mother was disgusted. Brother, but she lost a child, and it was just totally inappropriate. Inappropriate. Reporter Norman Rosenbaums brother stabbed to death in the 1991 riots that erupted after a car and a motorcade carrying the Menachem Mendel schneersoon accidentally struck a 7year old child, gavin cato who was black. There were people who took advantage of a very tragic motorcycle vehicle accident and hagram. Reporter borough president eric adams who is a sponsor of the one Crown Heights festival says its all about bringing people together. The Antidefamation League and other jewish groups are among the organizers.
