The police scene now stretching for blocks here on 198th street, evidence markers show the bullet casings left over from this shootout early this morning. Sources say the commotion started out in the street and then spread inside the store. They say that someone flagged two Police Officers down who went into the store and they were approached by a 30year old suspect who grabbed one of the officers guns and began firing. A second officer responding back with shots, and thats once in the torso and that innocent bystander was shot and killed. Now, witnesses say they saw the bystander being taken out of the deli. They say he is a 49yearold man, a store employee, well known in the neighborhood who was just cleaning the shop at the time. I was upstairs in my apartment, and i just kept on hearing a whole bunch of shots. It actually didnt even sound like shots, so, you know, after about five or six of them went rounds went off. Frightening to live in a neighborhood all this, you know, violence is occurring. Reporter sources say the 30 yearold suspect was shot in the torso. He was take to st. Barnabus hospital and is in stable condition. As for the Police Officers who responded to this scene, they are doing okay. They were just taken to the hospital for an evaluation. A power outage in atlanta apparently caused the problem, 1,000 flights. Another 2,600 were delay. Delta says passengers traveling today should check the status of their flight online or use the delta app that is waiving rescheduling fees. The airline is offers travel vouchers to anyone who was delayed by three hours or more or had their flight canceled. On any given day, 10,000 pedestrians and more than 3,000 cyclists use the Brooklyn Bridge and things get crowded very quickly. As cbs 2s scott ra possible bridge expansion to remedy that problem. Its time to take a fresh look at what the next generation of the Brooklyn Bridge is going to look like. Reporter new York City Department of transportation commissioner polly troutenberg says the city is commissioning a 370,000, sevenmonth study that famed promenade to ease congestion. Renderings like these show potential widening and expansion points over the length of the bridge, including possible expansion over the bridges getterrers. The fundamental challenge of all this the engineer and feasible. Can we find a way that the bridge can accommodate the weight and come up with a design . Reporter nothing is set in stone. Results from study will be available sometime next year. Bullets fly inside a crowded bodega as Police Struggle with a suspect who allegedly grabbed an officers gun a deli worker was killed, the suspect wounded and now in Police Custody. Cbs 2s Magdalena Doris joins us live from bedford park with more. Magdalena. Reporter we just got updates from the Bronx Borough commander here moments ago. Police have been investigating since 1 00 this morning when they say t identified by police as efrem guzman. He is 30 years old. He was shot in the torso by officers and a 49yearold man, a deli worker was killed during this gunfire exchange. Now, police say this all happened at a deli that is now being blocked by this white truck. The 49yearold store clerk and efrem guzman got into an altercation there. Guzman then cross the street and then headed to this deli, clerk followed him in, warning the customers and the employees that were inside that deli that guzman was coming. Officers were eventually called to the scene from the 52nd police precinct, and when they entered into this store, they got into phase cal altercation with 30yearold guzman. Guzman then pulled the gun from an officers holster with one pull and started shooting. Police say he let off 15 rounlds inside of that store. There 15 rounds inside of that store. There were multi store at the time. So this was all in a very close range, maybe two to three feet. Once guzman started to shoot, officers then pointed their gun towards him, shooting three times. They shot guzman in the torso. He was taken into custody, but while this gunfire was going off, police say guzmans bullets hit that 49yearold store clerk that he initially got into an argument with. That store clerk died. Neighbors heard all of these apartment, and i just kept on hearing a whole bunch of shots. It actually didnt even sound like shots, so, you know, after about five or six of them went off, then i realized they were gunshots, at least about 15 rounds went off. Frightening to live in a neighborhood that all this, you know, violence is occurring. Reporter again, police say efrem guzman, 30 years old was shot in the torso. He was taken to st. Barnabus hospital and is in stable condition the 49yearold store clerk from the deli down the street here has been identified, but his family has not been notified of his death as of yet. As for the two officers who were involved in this Police Involved shooting, they are okay. They were taken to the hospital to be monitored. New this morning, police in the bronx are looking for three robbers who stole a 59 yearold mans cell phone and knocked him out. It happened early monday morning on east gun hill road in norwood. The suspect attacked the victim, then a second man when they tried to get the phone back. The man whose phone was stolen being punched and kicked repeatedly. The two victims were treated at Jacoby Medical Center and released. A new court fight in the scandal over the George Washington bridge. The law firm hired by governor Christies Office to investigate the lane closures in fort lee says it will fight subpoenas to testify at an upcoming trial. Former christie aide Richard Kelly and former Port Authority executive bill berone go on trial next month. Theyre accused of closing the lanes in 2013 for political not responsible for any of the closures. Former illinois governor Rod Blagojevich will be resentenced today in chicago federal court. Blagojevich will appear Via Video Conference from prison in colorado. He and his family will try to persuade the judge to reduce his 14year sentence. Hes already served four years. A deli worker was killed, the suspect wounded, and now hes in Police Custody. Cbs 2s Magdalena Doris joins more this morning. Magdalena. Reporter chris and mary, we just got an update from Police Minutes ago from the Bronx Borough chief who tells us this all happened in very tight quarters inside of this bodega on the corner here of east 198th street and valentine avenue. Nearly 20 shots ringing out and people were within two and three feet. Two officers trying to shield people inside from those bullets that were ringing out. Now a store clerk is dead, a suspect was shot and is now in Police Custody after grabbing the magazine. Police say 30yearold efrem guzman got into an argument with a 49yearold store clerk at a deli across the street. He then went into the next deli trying to get into an altercation with those store clerks and customers inside. The initial clerk followed him in to warn the people that hes familiar with about guzman, and thats when the police were called. When Police Arrived from the went in and efran guzman grand one of their guns from the holster with one swift yank. He started firing that gun and 15 shots rang out inside of this store. One of them hitting the 49year old store clerk. He initially got into an argument with. Police laid it all out in a news conference. As the officers were escorting mr. Guzman out of the store, mr. Guzman was able to grab a gun from officers holsters. The officer struggled with mr. Guzman to regain control of his gun when the second officer fired three shots at mr. Guzman, striking him twice. Mr. Guzman fired numerous shots from the officers gun, one of which we believe fatally struck a 49yearold male who works in a store across the street. The nypd says the responding officers were lucky that they did not get shot themselves as they were trying to shield the store employees and customers from over a dozen bullets that rang out inside of this deli at around 1 00 this morning. Got into a physical altercation inside of the deli on the corner of east 189th and valentine avenue, and when cops tried to take guzman out of the store, with one pull, he was able to grab the cops gun and empty the magazine inside that store, hitting and killing a 49 yearold store clerk whom hed argued with just minutes earlier. Police returned fire, hitting the suspect twice, as they tried to protect the people inside. Escorting mr. Guzman out of the store, mr. Guzman was able to grab a gun from one of the officers holsters. The officers struggled with mr. Guzman to regain control of his gun when the second officer fired three shots at mr. Guzman, striking him twice. Mr. Guzman fired numerous shots from the officers gun, one of a 49yearold male who works in a store across the street. Here in montclaire parents have been working hard all summer to stop the states approval of a Charter School that they say will draw students away from a worked hard to build. Montclaire prides itself on our diverse Public Schools. Kids are not assigned to schools based on where they live, but rather based on what their interests are. The charter was proposed based on the idea that the schools are failing, and thats just not the case.
