First a terrifying ordeal for a woman jogging in brooklyn. She says a man tried to rape her at knifepoint inside Prospect Park. Now police say the hunt is on for her attacker. Cbs 2s Janelle Burrell joins us live from the scene with more. Janelle. Reporter chris, the good news in this case is that police collected more ef trying to pinpoint where that man is exactly leading to his arrest. It was near this entrance to Prospect Park that that woman was jogging alone. The man attempted to attack her, but she fought back. Surveillance cameras capturing this video of the man they are looking for. You can see him first walking, looking over his shoulder before running from the area near Prospect Park close to the time of the attack. Police released this sketch giving a better snapshot of what he may look like. Investigators say it was around 5 15 wednesday morning that the man zeroed in on a 23yearold woman who was jogging alone near the garfield place in Prospect Park west entrance. From behind, throwing her to the ground and then with a knife in his hand told the woman he was going to rape her. This isnt even a secluded area, you know . It isnt even like she was in the woods. Scary. Reporter police say she tried to fight him off, struggling with her attacker until he eventually gave up an ran away. Hes describe as a black man between 510, six feet tall, 180 to 190 pounds with short hair and a goatee, last seen wearing a black tshirt and black pants with white letters. Police spent part of wednesday isolating the crime scene as families played nearby. Its hard to believe this happened, actually, because i feel very safe. Reporter Brooklyn Borough president eric adams now urging the community to do their part as investigators look to find this wouldbe rapist. We want to have a very swift and aggressive response, not only from the Police Department, but from civic and Community Groups to catch this reporter now, investigators say that the woman did cut her finger on that knife during the struggle, but she is expected to make a fug recovery. Reporter mary, today firefighters are keeping a very close eye on this will neighborhood to make sure this fire doesnt flare up. We want to show you the damage. Take a look. The flames jumped from home to home and this is whats left of one of them. You can see its a giant pile of rubble and several families here have lost everything. Chopper 2 capture the wall of flames as they torched this lindenhurst neighborhood and quickly spread to a wildlife refuge, the air filled with thick smoke and embers swirling in the brisk changeable wind. A total of five homes damaged, at least two charred and destroyed. Oh, it was intense down here. A long island man is facing charges this morning in connection with a row rage incident at a hicksville mall. Police say 58yearold robert la bellea cut off a car while shouting obscenities and then rushed up to the family inside the vehicle. Investigators say la bellea attacked a man in his kids and sprayed them with pepper spray at hicksvilles broadway mall on tuesday. He did spray pepper mace in the vehicle which hit the occupant of the vehicle, his 19 yearold daughter which was in the passenger seat an his 14 yearold son which was in the passenger seat rear. My client may have accidentally cut some people off and they chased him and got out of their vehicle and started attacking him. Mace is legal whens used in self defense. But because of the way la bellea allegedly used it, he is possession of a weapon in addition to assault. The city council has approve add plan to turn brooklyns East New York into a mixed income area. It is the first of mayor de blasios 15 proposed neighborhood rezonings to create affordable housing. The East New York plan is expected to create 1,300 affordable apartments over the next two years. Theyll go to families making between 23,000 and 70,000 a year. As cbs 2s Hazel Sanchez reports, the state attorney general is now launching a probe along with the city comptroller. Reporter the New York Primary was a big day for the candidates, but an even more meaningful day for 36yearold tommy hartong of ridgewood, queens who registered to vote for the very first time after he says he finally found a candidate he supported. I was approved in their system, i got an approval letter. I registered to vote with the Democratic Party and i went to the poll station and i wasnt in the book. Reporter hartong wasnt the only one with issues. The new York Attorney Generals Office says it received more than 1,000 complaints about voting you irregularities. Several viewers sounded off on the Cbsnewyork Facebook page like ra dl mona who posted voteed in brooklyn, they couldnt find me. I voted for 40 years straight. Ryan wrote, couldnt vote because they drop my name from active registered voter at the pathetic. It was just a really discouraging moment for me, and, yeah, i just felt kind of robbed of my vote. Reporter other viewers complained about missing ballots, polling site changes without notification and polls closing early. To that the director for the board of elections, michael ryan says any of those issues are absolutely, 100 regrettable. We do a postelection analysis after every election to make sure that the problems of the past are not repeated in the future. Reporter to ensure mistakes arent repeated, city comptroller Scott Stringer says he will audit the board of elections. Thousands of people were disenfranchised, up to 125,000 people were purged from the voter rolls. This is not the way to conduct an election. Purged is the wrong word. Reporter ryan says the voters were removed from the roll because they move out of the borough or were classify as inactive after changing addresses or failing to vote in not properly reregistering by the march 30 deadline. It was actually around this time yesterday that that woman was alone when that suspect attacked her. Now this Morning Police have released new clues, hoping it will lead to an arrest. Surveillance cameras capturing this video of the man they are looking for. You can see him first walking, looking over his shoulder before running from the area near Prospect Park close to the time of the attack. Giving a better snapshot of what he may look like. Investigators say it was around 5 15 wednesday morning that the man zeroed in on a 23yearold woman who was jogging alone near the garfield place and Prospect Park west entrance. Detectives say he attacked her from behind, throwing her to the ground and then with a knife in his hand told the woman he was going to rape her. This isnt even a secluded area, you know. Its not like she was in the woods. This is scary. Reporter police say the woman tried to fight him off, struggling with her attacker until he eventually gave up and ran away. Hes described as a black man between 510 and six feet tall, 180 to 190 pounds with short hair and a goatee, last seen wearing a black tshirt and black pants with white lettering. Police spent part of wednesday isolating the crime scene as families were nearby. Its hard to believe this happened, actually. Because i feel very safe. Reporter mary, first we want to tell you that we are already dealing with a little bit of wind today and firefighters do have some concerns if it picks up today. But we want to show you what this neighborhood is dealing with this morning. Take a look. The wind carried this fire from home to home. Two of these houses are now condemned, one of them was just leveled, and you can see that its a giant pile of rubble. Fortunately no one was hurt. Chopper 2 captured the wall of flames as they torched this lindenhurst neighborhood and quickly spread to a wildlife refuge, the air filled with thick smoke and embers swirling in the brisk changeable wind. A total of five homes damaged, at least two charred and destroyed. Ohs, it was intense down here. It was like the ashes the that the ashes that the island was on fire, went through the neighborhood an just started lighting stuff up. This Morning Police have released new video of the two men they say are robbing taxi drivers in several queens neighborhoods, including Richmond Hill and jamaica. They say in many of the cases, 14 cases they approach the drivers after theyve hopped out of the cabs. Police say they flash a gun, demand cash and run off with the drivers money. Theyre accused of stealing nearly 6,000 and several credit cards and phones since march 3rd. Police say a man broke into a queens construction site and made off with copper pipe and electrical wire. Investigators have released this Surveillance Video. It happened on 31st street avenue in astoria back on april 7th at about 4 00 in the morning. Police say the men gained access by climbing over a fence. Prosecutors are seeking a lengthy prison term for disgraced former speaker sheldon silver. In papers, the d. A. To at least 15 years in prison. That would be a record for any new york state legislator. Silver was convicted last november on seven counts of corruption, stemming from bribery and kickbacks. His sentencing is set for may 3rd. Police on Staten Island say the socalled ninja burglar has confessd to a decadesold crime spree and is expected to plead guilty to charges today. Investigators say 46yearold Robert Costanzo admitted to roughly 150 breakins on Staten Island since 2005. Reporter mary, we just talkd to a woman who lives in this neighborhood and she tells us she is absolutely heartbroken waking up and looking at this damage across the street. Check it out. The wind really carried this fire, the flames jumped from home to home. This is where the fire started at this home that is now a pile of rubble. Several families here lost everything they own. Chopper 2 captured the wall of flames as they torched this lindenhurst neighborhood and quickly spread to a wildlife refuge. The air filled with thick smoke and embers swirling in the brisk changeable wind. A total of five homes damaged, at least two charred and destroyed. Oh, it was intense down here. It was like the ashes the wind changed direction so fast that the ashes that the island was on fire, came through the neighborhood and just started lighting stuff up. Reporter this picture shows the house on east Santa Barbara road where the fire started from an electrical short in a wallmounted air conditioner. A mother inside grabbed her child and they ran out immediately and all of a sudden they yell its out of control, and at that point i lifted my head and i just saw the whole back yard up in flames. I went in to get my phone charger of all things, and i saw smoke coming through the walls. Reporter he escaped as fast as he could. Many of the homes here are Superstorm Sandy. Fire crews worked for hours in this area lined with canals, hosing down properties and the dry brush to prevent a full blown disaster this is tragic, but it could have been a lot worse. Police released this sketch giving a better snapshot of what he may look like. Investigators say it was around 5 15 wednesday morning that the man zeroed in on a 23yearold woman who was jogging alone near the garfield place and Prospect Park west entrance. Detectives say he attacked her from behind, throwing her to the ground and then with a knife in his hand told the woman he was going to rape her. This isnt even a secluded area, you know, its not like she was in the woods. This is scary. Reporter police say the woman tried to fight him off, struggling with her attacker until he eventually gave up and ran away. Hes described as a black man between 510 and six feet tall, 180 to 190 pounds with short hair and a goatee, last seen wearing a black tshirt and black pants with white lettering. Police spent part of wednesday isolating the crime scene as families played nearby its hard to believe this happened, actually, because i feel very safe. Reporter friends honored the life of 33yearold james gregg with flowers and candles placed at the corner of sixth avenue and Sterling Place where he was killed while riding his bike. He was always on the bike. So he was probably out for his morning bike ride. Reporter police say gregg was headed south on sixth avenue in the same direction as a large truck when he somehow collided with the back tires. He may have found himself squeeze ised a little bit and not squeezed a little bit and not realizing a truck was passing him and he got clipped by the back tires. The weather made it even harder for crews battling a massive fire in Suffolk County that leveled several homes last night. Cbs 2s alana gold is live in lindenwith a look at the damage. Allana. Reporter mary, first, we want to tell you that were already dealing with a little bit of wind out here and firefighters have a lot of concerns if that wind picks up later on today. But we want to show you what neighbors are waking up to. Take a look at the damage, just an incredible scene out here. The wind carried the flames from home to home. Two of these houses are now condemned, one of them was just leveled. And you can see its a giant pile of rubble. Fortunately no one was hurt. Chopper 2 capture the wall of flames as they torched this quickly spread to a wildlife refuge. The air filled with thick smoke and embers flying in the brisk, changeable wind. A total of five homes damaged, at least two charred and destroyed. Ohs it was intense down here. It was like the ashes the wind changed direction so fast that the ashes that the iron was on fire came through the neighborhood and just started lighting stuff up. Reporter this picture shows the house on east Santa Barbara road where the fire started from an electrical short in a wallmounted air conditioner. A mother inside grabbed her child and they ran out immediately. And all of a sudden they yelled its out of control. And at that point i lifted my head and i just saw the whole back yard up in flames. Reporter the heat from those flames so intense they melted the siding of keith bushs place. He was here at the time. I went in to get my phone charger of all things, and i saw smoke coming through the walls. Reporter he escaped as fast as he could. Many of the homes here are still being restored after Superstorm Sandy. Fire crews worked for hours in this area lined with canals hosing down properties and the dry brush to prevent a full this is tragic, but it could have been a lot worse. Reporter and after this, firefighters will stay on high alert today with more wind projected and no rain, perfect conditions for another brush fire. And back out here live where some families rebuilding from sandy have lost everything again after this fastmoving fire, just a devastating situation. New this Morning Police have released new video of two men they say are robbing taxi drivers in several queens neighbors, including Richmond Hill and jamaica. They say in many of the 14 cases they approach the driver after theyve hopped out of the cabs. Police say they flash a gun, demand cash an then run off with the drivers money. Theyre accused of stealing nearly 6,000 and several credit cards and phones since march 3rd. Police say a man broke into a queens construction site and made off with some copper pipe and electrical wire. Investigators have released it happened on 31st avenue in astoria back on april 7th at about 4 00 in the morning. Police say the man gained fence. Prosecutors are seeking a lengthy prison term for disgraced former Assembly Speaker sheldon silver. In papers filed yesterday, u. S. Attorney says that silver will be sentenced for at least 15 years. That would be a roar for any new york state legislator. Silver was convicted last november on seven counts of corruption, stemming from bribery and kickbacks. His sentencing is set for may 3rd. Police on Staten Island say the socalled ninja burglar has confessed to a decadesold crime spree and is expected to plead guilty to charges today. Investigators say 46yearold Robert Costanzo admitted to roughly 150 breakins on Staten Island since 2005. Several issues this morning in the bronx. Weve got Service Suspended in both directions on the 2 and 5 trains because of police and Fire Department activity. That is near freeman street. They have started to block off southern boulevard, as you heard kyla mention a minute ago, there are subway disruptions on the 2 and 5 trains in the area of the freeman street station. So far no injuries have been reported. Again, Fire Department still arriving on the scene, trying to assess the situation. Reporter that includes not only people with autism, but elders with dementia or someone with a speech impediment or who is deaf. The responding officer is then armed with this information. A certain behavior or lack of behavior was easily misconstrued by an officer as some kind of dangerous activity. Reporter the registry is a voluntary program where families can enter Additional Information like calming methods for someone who is autistic if we know, for instance, that the child likes trains or likes baseball, the officer armed with that information can talk to them about that and hopefully gain their confidence and keep the situation calm.
