Unfolding overseas. A egypt airplane was forced to fly to the island of cyprus. The hijacker allowed all passengers except four foreigners and some crew members to get off the aircraft. The hijacker has been identified as an egyptian man and is wearing an explosive suicide belt. The motive is not clear. There are reports hes seeking political asylum in cyprus. We will have more throughout the morning. And breaking news at home. A huge fire in east elmhurst, queens. Janelle burrell joins us live from the scene with more this morning. Janelle . Reporter chris and mary, the good news is the fire is under control here on 91st street and elmhurst. We want to get you to video of the enormous flames coming from the home at 91st street. Morning in one residential home, quickly spread to another and the chief says there were about three garages in the back of those residences and the fire consumed those structures, as well. The good news is that everybody did make it out safely. Hes telling us there are six firefighters who suffered minor injuries, but this triggered a massive response, about 150 firefighters responded to the scene here of the were told, again, all residents did evacuate safely. Police had to monitor the area there at west 5th street and oakland avenue as the power lines cut off all road activity in that area. Over out east, there was a unhappy drive waking up this morning. A tree fell on their car, as well, and in manhattan, there regards to these high, whipping winds over on the Upper West Side. The Fire Department responding to 79th street and broadway at 7 30 last nights. There was debris falling from a 12story building. Thats a condominium building. Thankfully no one was injured last night. As you can tell, the winds are whipping out here. We do have a Silver Lining to all of this. There was Power Outages throughout the tristate area. Were now checking the numbers and surveying the numbers and it seems like those Power Outages are becoming less and less. Power is being restored to areas. A double murder case in staten island. Police say jose rivera is in custody this morning in pennsylvania. 21yearold Anthony Rivera and his 47yearold mother, adele, outside the Mariners Harbor houses. Police say a dispute over money may have led to the shootings. To a developing story this morning. Police continue searching for a man wanted for a Sexual Assault at the stonewall inn. The man attacked a transgender woman inside the bar saturday night. The man said he needed to wash his hands and then attacked her. The bar was the site of the start of the modern gay rights movement. Its a disturbing incident taking place in the site thats important historically, where something good happened in terms of creating more opportunity for people to live their lives, to this see is very, very troubling. An arrest is imminent, police say. A new jersey woman is hospitalized with life threatening injuries after being hit by a car last night. Witnesses say it was no accident. They say the driver, another there was a fight in the car. She got back in the car that you see over there, the taurus, and just motored out, ran over her, deliberately. I cant get it out of my head right now. The car jumped a curb knocking down a light pole. The driver was injured. No word on her condition. Police are investigating. The Capitol Hill Visitor Center will reopen this morning after yesterdays chaos. A man pulled a gun wand shot by a capitol hill officer. Hes in critical but stable condition, and facing charges. Authorities release Surveillance Video of the man seen who targeted the brussels airport. A man taken into Police Custody and misidentified as the man in the video was released. Prosecutors say there was a lack of evidence. Four people wounded in the attacks have died, raising the death toll to 35. And new video of the two brothers accused in the paris terror attacks. It shows them partying at a brussels nightclub in february of 2015, nearly nine months later, police say rahim blew himself up with the attacks on paris and the other was captured earlier this month. The fbi successfully hacked into the iphone used by the San Bernardino shooter. The agency didnt explain how, but the Justice Department says it will drop its lawsuit against apple. The cemetery wouldnt comment, but passed me on to their contractor, joe, who says theres not a drainage issue. He told me they will add top soil and seed like they do every spring in may. And the response from the cemetery, theyre going to put seed and a little top soil is not the problem. That theyre apparently not going to address. Our veterans deserve better. We get to the breaking news overseas. An egypt air flight forced to land on the island of cyprus. Were monitoring developments this morning. Don . Reporter yes, developments are coming in by the minute from egypt. As of right now, four foreigners and the flight crew remain on board egypt air flight 181. The flight from the egyptian coastal city of alexandria to cairo diverted overnight to cyprus after a passenger claimed he had a suicide belt. Once it landed, Security Forces could be seen surrounding the negotiations then started with the hijacker, who has been identified at being an egyptian national. Those negotiations led to most of the 81 passengers on board getting released. Now, within the past hour, the director of Alexandria Airport in egypt told the Associated Press that there were 26 foreigners on the plane, including 8 americans. It is not known if any of those americans remain on board right now. Of course, this high jacking brings up serious questions about Airport Security in egypt. You may recall back in october, a russian passenger jet was bombed over the Sinai Peninsula in eegypt, killing all 224 people on board and a group of isis later claimed responsibility for that, but, again, at this hour, right now, the flight crew and four foreigners remain on the plane. It is not known if any of the americans were among are among them right now. Chris and mary . Don, one of the questions, of course, is what is the yeah, the motivation not clear just yet. No group has claimed responsibility and its not known if this hijacker is abilitying alone. Thank you, magdalena. And breaking news this morning, weve got a fire fueled by wind in east elmhurst, queens. It started in an Apartment Building and spread to an adjacent building. Cbs 2s Janelle Burrell joins us live from the scene with the latest on this. Janelle . Reporter good morning to you, mary and chris. Good news is that fire is out. And firefighters actually just clearing the scene a few this truck right now blocking our view of the homes, but lets show you video of what it looks like when this fire started just after 2 00 this morning. You can see those massive flames shooting out of 234 2341 91st street. The deputy chief says it started on the home on the right, spread to the home next door. The flames also consuming three garages located behind the houses. The good news, everybody did make it out safely, but the chief says the wind played a factor, fanning the flames, making it a challenge for crews. Upon arrival we were met with heavy fire in two buildings and three garages in the rear, quickly went to a third alarm, bringing 150 firefighters to the scene. The firefight lasted a little over an hour until we brought the fire under control. Again, all the residents did make it out safely, but the chief says that six firefighters were left with right now, the fire marshal is on scene, going through the homes here, trying to pinpoint the source of the flames. Its okay. Stay down. Reporter police say a man from tennessee, 66yearold larry dawson, pulled a gun. What he shot he was shot by a Capitol Hill Police officer. Officials ruled out terrorism. There is no reason to believe that this is anything more than a criminal act. All of a sudden, it was just a scramble with people yelling and screaming and officers just coming out from every direction with guns drawn. Dawson is in critical but stable condition this morning. Last fall, dawson was arrested after disrupting the House Chamber. He was ordered to stay away and the nypd held a drill to practice against attacks. They held a tabletop terrorism, involving a suicide bomber and shooters in four locations throughout the city. The city hopes to improve relationships with muslims across the city. Do you have a worry that because people could turn so quickly that you can miss it . Its always something we think about. As you have duly noted, the time from flash to bang, from radicalzation to action, it something in the isis era weve seen shorten. The mayor says the nypd is ready to deal with an isis inspired terror attack. A man who escaped custody while being taken from a Harlem Police station to central booking faces possible sentencing today. Tarik arnold was arrested last july on suspicion of attempted murder. After breaking free, Surveillance Video shows him in handcuffs running down the after him. He was eventually captured after a month on the run. Hed been convicted of escape and of the original charge of attempted murder. A wall street executive with homes in bronxville and manhattan is accused of stealing 25 million from a charitable foundation. 39yearold Andrew Casperson is a managing principal at a private equity firm. Hes free on bond. He faces up to 40 years in prison and tens of millions of dollars in fines it convicted. Why new york state is banning nonessential traveling to North Carolina, coming up. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order banning all nonessential travel by state employees to North Carolina. The ban follows the enactment of a North Carolina law that bans transgender individuals from using restrooms appropriate for their gender identity. Weve received complaints that employees evasive, saying things like the owner isnt here, the manager isnt here right now. Reporter most drivers say they had no idea they could get free air in hempstead. It might be just a quarter now, and 0. 50 then, but it keeps going up. Reporter vendors who who manufacture and service the machines say they cost upwards of 2,000. The local vendor says free air business. It would cause me to have to lay off several people. I have 30 employees, 10 of them living in the town of hempstead. This would be devastating. Reporter he says the machines are routinely vandalized by vehicles, like this busted pump. Hes worried free air will spread to other towns. Many service stations already offer free air and owners say its a small cost that brings in more customers. We have more breaking news this morning, those winds were experienced fanning the flames of a massive fire in queens. 150 firefighters were called in to fight the blaze in two residential buildings. You can see the two white homes behind us. Those are the homes that burned. They had significant damage inside. Lets show you the video shot earlier, around 2 00 this morning. The fire chief believes it started in the home on the right, spread to the home next to it and to three garages behind these houses here. He says that the wind definitely played a factor here overnight in terms of fanning it took crews an hour to get it under control. Just a short time ago, we spoke with a boy who lives in one of the homes that was affected. He described for us waking up to the flames. Take a listen. I just heard the fire from my window in my bedroom and saw like red from my bedroom. My bedroom is in the back. So the fire started from the back and then got its way to the front. What did you do when you heard it . I grabbed my phone and ran out. Reporter yeah, that teenager and his family all made it out safely. As did his neighbors here. They are staying with relatives at this time. The chief says six firefighters were left with minor injuries. The victim says the man barged in to the bathroom and attacked her. A spokesman for the egyptian president announced they dont believe the hijacking has anything to do with terrorism. They say right now it appears the man who hijacked the plane did so because of personal reasons, possibly something dealing with his exwife. Now, there were americans on the flight, up to eight. Thats what the Associated Press is reporting now. Its not clear if any of them remain on the plane. This started overnight, shortly after egypt air flight 181 took off from alexandria, headed to cairo. Now, during the flights, a passenger claimed he had a suicide belt and the plane diverted to cyprus. Once it landed, Security Forces surrounded the plane. Hijacker who has been identified as being a dual eexception and american citizen egyptian and american citizen. Most of the passengers on board got released. Were told now at least 3 passengers and 4 crew members remain on the plane. Again, the Associated Press reports up to 8 americans could have been on the plane. Because the man claims that his suicide belt is real, negotiations continue right now with him. There are conflicting reports about the identity of the hijacker, but egyptian officials are taking this very seriously at this hour, but the good news is that they do not believe it has any connections to terrorism, as one Foreign Ministry official put it, he says thirst not a terrorist, hes an idiot. Its a bizarre incident that continues unfolding. Chris and mary . Don, what kind of security yeah, obviously initially this raised serious concerns about Airport Security in egypt following that bombing of a Russian Airliner back in october over egypt. The new york governor signed an executive order banning all nonessential travel by employees to North Carolina. It bans transgender individuals from using restrooms that go ewith their identitiys. Hempsteads town supervisor said the town law already gives customers the right to get air for free, but only if they ask. He says the town received complaints that employees are evasive. Police say the accused killer, jose ramirez, is in custody this morning in pennsylvania. 21yearold Anthony Rivera and his 47yearold mother adele were gunned down last thursday outside the Mariners Harbor houses. Police say a dispute over money may have led to the shootings. And more breaking news, high winds weve experienced fanning the flames of a big fire in queens. A developing story, the search is on for a man wanted for a Sexual Assault at the stonewall inn. The man attacked a 25yearold transgender woman inside the bathroom of the bar saturday night. The victim says the man barged in, claiming he needed to wash his hands and attacked her. The bar was the site of the 1969 demonstration thats marked the start of the modern gay rights movement. Its a very disturbing incident taking place in a site thats historic, where something good happened in terms of creating more live their lives, to see a violent incident like this is very, very troubling. The mayor says police know who the suspect is and an arrest is imminent. A jersey city woman is hospitalized after being hit by a car last night. Shes in critical condition. According to witnesses, it was no downtown. They say the driver, another woman, was drive arguing with another woman and ran her down. The car jumped a curb, knocking down a light pole. The driver was also injured. Shes in Police Custody at jersey City Hospital of the police are investigating the scene. New this morning, Surveillance Video released of a robbery suspect in cyprus hills, brooklyn, say he pulled a gun yesterday afternoon at the grocery tobacco shop. Authorities release Surveillance Video of the man in the hat seen with the suicide bombers who targeted the brussels airport. Hes still at large.
