More complaints about new Jersey Transit, but nothing to do with commuter service. Its a concern over potentially toxic Railroad Ties, and Hazel Sanchez is demanding answers for njt. Its irresponsibility on the part of new Jersey Transit. Reporter delores says new Jersey Transit dumped a massive pile of Railroad Ties across from her independent living in glenrock, new jersey, saying the amount of flammable wood makes her and her neighbors nervous. Theres the possibility it could cause cancer, and being a survivor, i think it should be removed as soon as possible. Reporter hundreds of these ties have been sitting off the tracks near the glenrock train station for a month. Crews have been replacing them for the annual maintenance program. The ties are treated like utility poles to keep them from rotting, but its a known carcinogen. They put them there and created a hazard. If i or my neighbor had a hazard in his yard, we would be fined and told to get rid of it. I dont know why we cant compel new Jersey Transit to fix the problem they have created. Reporter new Jersey Transit claims the rail ties are not an environment hazard, and they are not only dictated by the federal administration guideline, but they must meet the epa and dea standards as well. But since people are concerned about hazard and fire with immobile seniors at risk, new Jersey Transit is responding, having crew rest move the ties by this week. They have been there for a long time. Business owners also complained about Railroad Ties in other locations that have now been removed as well. Sources tell cbs 2 that entrances to penn station during the popes visit will be closed when the pope celebrates mass at Madison Square garden. Reporter the allgirls Catholic School is slated to be shut down once again today after a small amount of legionella bacteria was found in one of the cooling towers of the Sacred Heart School. It was tested as part of the new legislation after the outbreak in the bronx that killed a dozen people and left 100 others sick. The new law forces building owners to have all cooling towers registered and routinely inspected. The school is housed in two landmark buildings, former mansions, and both were shutdown on monday with faculty meetings at other locations, and sacred hearts principal said while it was only found in small amounts and is unlikely to vinefected anyone well have closed the mansions this weekend to eradicate the bacteria. The city confirms they have taken action. its cooling towers positive test result and subsequent disinfection underscores the importance of the new legislation the mayor signed just 2 weeks ago. Reporter the fire is burning on bryant avenue from east 172nd and 173rd streets, and dozens of firefighters are out here, and the area is blocked off to put out the flames. Crews on scene say it was initially reported in a garage, and it spread fast. The homes in front of the garage also caught on fire, and then the flames torched parts of the homes next door. We are told all have extensive damage, and now all 60 tenants inside of the homes managed to escape, and none reported any injuries, but one firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and they are expected to be okay.
