Two long island men are credited with the Daring Rescue of a baby osprey. The wild bird fell into the water off east hampton after getting tangled up for quite a while in a fishing line. Cbs 2s dave carlin has the story. Reporter a mother osprey circling above gardners bay in east hampton minus one of her two chicks. The missing baby here recovering at a Wildlife Refuge Center after being d i have wedged that ladder in between those two reporter he and his friend grabbed a ladder from the truck to rescue the osprey after a fisherman saw it tangled in a net. Their first rescue effort nearly pulled them out to sea. The current from the beach into the channel was too strong and it sucked the ladder in and it was pulling us in. So we had to aboard the rescue. Reporter abort the rescue. Reporter they decided to way for low tide and try again. Down in probably chest high water while i climbed up about 35 feet and started untangling the line from the chick. Reporter he says the osprey did not try to peck at him as he untangled the line. He pushed the injured osprey out of the nest. I looked up and i saw the bird come off the edge of the nest, flapped its wings a couple times and did a nosedive into the water. Reporter despite the ospreys super sharp talons, mike dove into the water grabbed the osprey and began swimm they took it to a Refuge Center and the prognosis is good. It has a very swollen he will boy. We took an xray elbow. We took and xray and nothing is broken. Reporter the Good Samaritans celebrate the happy ending.
