New information on a fire that started last night in passaic, new jersey. The fire breaking out in a fivestory building on the 200 block of gregory avenue leeching over 300 people homeless. Today those residents were allowed back in to try to salvage their belongings. Residents say they had no warning because fire alarms in the building do not work. Fire investigators say the flames spread quickly because the building has a common loft. The only thing that we know a lot of residents approached me and and and told me there was an argument and fifth floor and those were running around so we are investigating. They found more exposure that the children had to antibiotics the more likely they were to gain weight over the long term. The authors of the study believe antibiotics change good bacteria in the intestinal tract that helps digest food. Without that good bacteria, theres more chance of more weight gain. One of the biggest concerns for parents of young athlete is preventing concussion. Now more and more children are having a certain test before their sports season even starts. Cbs 2s alice gainer is here to explain. Reporter its a test that can help aid in the recovery of concussion and perform before a child has the injury. I just felt like a big shock hit me like whoa. Reporter the 10yearold was playing linebacker three weeks ago when he crashed head first into another player. After that i, like, i i heard, like, a little ringing. We are in the huddle im like coach, coach, i need to sit out. He had sensitivity to light for a while. Reporter his mom took him to the doctor next morning and he was diagnosed are a concussion. Its annoying sitting out. I dont like hearing it. I really want to get back to sports. Reporter just a week before the hit, he had test. The xs and os arent the next football play. Its part of the test. It assesses balance. Youres are closed when i say it again, ready . Begin. Eyes closed as still as you can. Reporter and brain function. Word memory, design memory, counting, reaction time, um, and, um, and delayed memory. Reporter this baseline data is then used to compare postconcussion data from a repeated test to monitor recovery and determine when its safe to return to sports. I have learned a lot just in that one appointment on what to look for and the signs and the symptoms. Reporter so a week later when griffin actually suffered a concussion i was a lot calmer. We have had coaches say my concussions are going through the roof. Whats happening is they are being reported. Theres awareness. Reporter more awareness especially surrounding athletes. Theres even a movie coming out called concussion. Repetitive head trauma. Reporter the director of Sports Medicine at the Valley Hospital in ridgewood says within the last five years, return to play recognition guidelines have come out nationally. Following them eases an athlete back into the game rather than having them go back full throttle. More awareness, new recommendations, but still some unanswered questions. Theres so much more research now looking at pediatrics. We hadnt had that before. What does a concussion do to that young developing brain . That hasnt been answered. Should we play sports that young before the brain is developed . I dont know. Reporter symptom free, griffin will be back on the field sunday. Ill be nervous. But they are both excited. Reporter concussions are diagnosed by symptoms and this test act as a tool to help determine where an athlete is at in his recovery. Most high schools provide or require baseline testing and some youth rec leagues also require it, as well. For many younger kids though its optional and insurance will not cover it since its considered preventative. The test does run about 40 but you know what . Oh, my goodness.
