Underground electrical wires once again proving to be an incendiary mix with salt and rain and snow sparking one blast after the other here mid morning near elizabeth avenue and 7th street. Its looking like flames they come, the flames maybe about 6foot high and the smoke. A lot of smoke. Reporter the first came in at 10 10 a. M. After this manhole exploded, just as fire units were pulling up this manhole cover blasted into the air i stepped out of the vehicle and a manhole probably 20, 25 feet away shot right up in the air. It was a massive explosion. Reporter First Responders cleared people way quickly and evacuated some 20 buildings because of the real danger of getting killed by one of these. The Manhole Covers that were lifting off. Reporter whats more, Carbon Monoxide was detected forcing the urgent ventilation of many basements. Emergency utility workers out in force scrambling to ensure safety make repairs and get the power back on. Local businesses suffered. You see. The sentencing of a driver who killed a child as he walked to school is being called a slap on the wrist. The judge said he had no choice. Cbs 2s Carolyn Gusoff was in mineola with victims tearful parents. Its not enough. Its not enough. Six months is not enough. Reporter a sixmonth sentence for driving without a license, a misdemeanor, even though austin sal dano killed the mother told the judge laws must change. So her 12yearold son did not die in vain. Reporter the 7th grader struck and killed while walking to school in valley stream. The defendant license suspended after dangerous crimes. A 2011 conviction for dwi and unlicensed driving. A 2013 arrest for reckless driving, fleeing police, crashing into a troopers car. In 2014, running red lights driving drunk fleeing police hitting cars. His license then suspended but soldano drove again. His terrible decisions and driving led to the death. Prosecutors for stiffer penalties. The d. A. Would make it a felony punishable up to 7 years. The fact that we can get justice is sad. The penalties are minuscule. Reporter but the bill failed last year in the assembly. Soldano said nothing to reporters but in court, there are no words that can express how sorry i am, if i knew how to turn this into good, i would. I didnt believe it for one minute. Reporter the judge agreed the sentence is inadequate but included five years probation and an ignition lock to prevent drunk driving. Soldano could be out of jail and eligible to drive again in a year. In mineola, long island, Carolyn Gusoff, cbs 2 news. He was sentenced for a year in jail for a prior dwi. Where was her mother . Thats the question tonight in the case of a 2yearold Girl Found Dead in a house fire in brooklyn. The mother faces serious charges and investigators say she may have been out partying. Neighbors say that 20yearold leila aquino worked as a stripper but she was not at work the other night. She was out partying with friends when the fire occurred. We have also learned that the administration for Childrens Services was alerted to aquino leaving her daughter home alone last week when she was out working. A disheveled looking woman says nothing and keeps her eyes and head down as she is led out of the 81st precinct in handcuffs charged with endangering the welfare of a child and Reckless Endangerment after her daughter, 2yearold kalenah muldrow, was found dead, alone under a bed in her charred home. Thats a sign of being scared right there. You found underneath your bed you didnt know whats going on. I can imagine the first thing she was looking for was her mother when she woke up. You see him in this video wearing black and orange. From his Time High School wrestling in east ramapo p police say he sexually abused a young teenaged boy in a youth wrestling program. Police are careful to not inadvertently identify the young victim by giving his age he was in. Its alleged that the 18 yearold male suspect had basically, um, lured a young male into sexual acts through social media snapchat as well as some other forms of social media. Reporter stroud participated in programs with kids not only in rockland but also in westchester and bergen counties. Parents noticed messages dating back to months and went to police. Stroud is charged with felony criminal acts and several other charges and endangering the welfare of a child misdemeanor. Police say there are no signs of a prior criminal record perhaps nothing to red flag stroud before he was hired coaching kids. Its just very scary, you dont know who to trust. Reporter the Police Commissioner ordered a full investigation only after officer peter liang found guilty this month in the death of akai gurley testified he hadnt been properly trained in cpr. But the nypd has been warned for years. Were constantly knocking on the doors and no one hears us. I feel lost in translation. Reporter the frustrating battle she and her husband have waged for six years to get the nypd to adequately train its cops in lifesaving this is something we need. We need this. [ crying ] our daughter passed. Reporter they say they asked a cop for help when their then 11yearold daughter bryanna was having an asthma attack. The Police Officer that my wife and my daughter encountered said he didnt know cpr, he didnt do cpr. Reporter they say bryanna would have survived if she had cpr in time. Now when they pray at the shrine to her outside their home, they also pray for the nypd to train every cop in cpr. Thats why they closely followed the murder trial of Police Officer peter liang convicted in the shooting death of akai gurley in the stairwell of a brooklyn housing project. Both liang and his partner said they didnt give him cpr after he was hit by a ricocheting bullet because they werent properly trained in the police academy. Immediately upon that statement being made we initiated an internal affairs investigation. Reporter liang testified he had little training and the that the instructors gave the students the answers to the multiple choice first aid test. Cbs 2 asked the nypd for details of the cpr training students in a class and number of instructors, the length of the classes and how many test dummies were available to practice on. Under no circumstances will we tolerate any instructor in the new York City Police department shortcircuiting the process of testing to validate that the officer has the skills necessary to safely patrol this city. Reporter and nypd Spokesman Says cpr training lasts a full day and the student to instructor ratio is one to three to one to six and there are 78 training mannequins. The commissioner said that every member of liangs class in the academy will be questioned to see if his testimony jibes with their experience. Maurice, kristine . All right. Thank you, marcia. Other details tonight on a crash that killed a father and his 6yearold daughter on the new jersey turnpike. The suspect scott hahn had a Court Hearing by teleconference today. The prosecutor told the judge hahn was going between 50 and 70 miles an hour when he at the 14c toll plaza. He also said hahn admitted to being on drugs. The accident occurred monday afternoon. He had not slept since 1 p. M. Sunday and had consumed 10 adderall tablets in which he had no prescription. The victims car was pushed into oncoming eastbound traffic where it was then hit by a van. Hahn previously had his license suspended more than 20 times and is charged with manslaughter. Newark puts the brakes on uber and lyft. The Rideshare Companies are now banned at the airport and also at newark penn station. Cbs 2s meg baker spoke to the mayor who explains why. Reporter click and go. Requesting a ride in newark is officially a no go. It doesnt cost a lot. Its less than getting a limo to the airport. Newark says Companies Like uber and lyft will no longer be able to operate at Newark Airport or newark penn station. The ban which was put on hold meeting of Newark City Council tuesday. Taxis and auto cabs they have to have a particular license, commercial license. They have to be, you know, investigated fingerprint and more importantly you have to have a medallion and they have to pay the city. Reporter background checks are run on all drivers to check criminal history, Motor Vehicle history and the National Sex Offender database but the mayor says the Rideshare Companies violate a City Ordinance requiring all commercial vehicles to pay to have licenses. The reality is, there are thousands of cabdrivers mostly immigrants by the way, this is their only source of income that are in this city that have been driving back and forth for years using this money to take care of themselves and their family. We have created and regulated these drivers not just in newark but all over the state of new jersey. These drivers are regulated and they pay a handsome sum of money to get medallions and insurance to get cars. Reporter the uber driver wants to keep his job, too. He says he comes to newark all off. At one point i had a Police Officer in newark come to my car and try to hassle me and the customer refused to get out. Reporter according to uber, more than 2,000 drivers are newark residents. In a statement they say we hope that newark will follow the lead of Port Authority and support the riders and drivers who use the uber platform at Newark Airport. Now, the mayor points out the taxis and cabs often wait much longer to pick up passengers where uber can just cut the line. Uber has not told its drivers to stop coming to newark. At newark penn station, meg baker, cbs 2 news. Currently there are 13,000 new jersey residents driving with uber. There are more turkey troubles in new jersey. First you will recall wild turkeys attacked a mail carrier. Now a group of them is accused of trying to break into a house a couple living in East Brunswick says they heard loud banging and saw the wild turkeys trying to break through their glass sliding door. The homeowners took these their deck and said they chased them away. Last week, the post office in hillsdale called 911 to say turkey has turned on a mail carrier. Youre not going to believe this but i have a carrier being attacked by wild turkeys with someone delivering the mail. This is going on. Its crazy. Theres a warm front moving through but then we have this flow coming in off the water.
