Thats what a test he helped develop here at the mayo clinic promises to do. Its called colo guard and works by looking for cancer dna in stool samples. Its quick and private and available to people in remote areas where theres little access to colonoscopy. Dr. Dalquist says its catching on. Its been prescribed 100,000 times. Cologuard is equivalent to colonoscopy in terms of detecting it early stage cancer. To put it in perspective, 100,000 tests would have reporter but not all gastroenterologists think the test is accurate enough. One out of five people are going to get wrong answer when they do that test. Reporter sarah has been through 71 rounds of chemotherapy. She says its a battle she doesnt want anyone else to share. You could prevent going through everything i have been through by taking one day out of your life to take a take home test or to go get a colonoscopy. Reporter while cologuard is easier than a colonoscopy, the drawback is if the test does suggest a problem then you may still need a colonoscopy and if it misses a cancer then that could be a problem of course. The test costs about 600 and is covered by some insurance plans. Even though its not perfect, doctors say almost anything that increases people getting screened for colon cancer is good. Exactly. Reporter the department of Homeless Services distributed instructions to some 3,000 volunteers taking part in the federally mandated Homeless OutreachPopulation Estimate known as the hope count. But the city specifically instructed them to only survey public spaces, not private establishments like fastfood so this homeless man we found in harlem hospital would not be counted. Neither would this man, panhandling in a fastfood restaurant in midtown. The guidelines for the Homeless Count are ones used by the city for years. The Human ResourcesAdministration Commissioner says he recognizes there needs to be change. So would you say it is flawed . We are using a mechanism in place for years reviewed by hud but we want to do more than that. Reporter the city says thats where mayor de blasios Homestead Initiative will make the difference, with more regular and ongoing Homeless Counts. We want to take an approach that addresses everyone on the street and get Accurate Information about who is there. Numbers speak loudest so if you collect statistics to show that there is indeed serious problem with homelessness, then hopefully we may be able to persuade policymakers to be more proactive. Reporter the city will begin a new series of Homeless Counts beginning i march. The citys Homeless Count guidelines have been in place since 2005. The search is on for the driver in a deadly hitandrun of a teenager in queens. Reporter environmentalists say railroad debris dumped on the site in the 1950s has leeched into the soil and ground water not far from a protected water source. We are within about 1,000 feet of the river. Reporter the town of brookhaven is suing the lirr demanding a full cleanup. But inside state Supreme Court in central islip, state of new york attorneys defended the railroad arguing it voluntarily agreed to treat the soil and cap it over with asphalt and concrete. Town attorneys call that a sweetheart deal allowing the railroad to get around environmental laws. The town insists that the state superfund law and all its protections to the citizens of brookhaven and everybody thats affected is protected the way the law requires. Reporter the long island rail road says a full cleanup and the ground water contamination has not been detected off site near neighbors homes. Resident joyce kinney is not buying it.
