A few moments ago the Baltimore Mayor stephanie rawlingsblake and her Police Commissioner urging calm. The Police Officer faced charges in the death of freddie gray. He was arrested in april. Officers put him into a police van. Prosecutors said officer porter did not secure gray with a seatbelt in the back of the van. And that porter didnt call for medical assistance when gray asked for it. 25yearold gray suffered a broken neck in the van and later died. The defense maintained that officer porter told his supervisor that gray needed to go to a hospital and witnesses testified he acted as any reasonable officer would. Freddie grays death set off widespread protests and vandalism in baltimore. Community leaders saying today they are disappointed by the mistrial. So this is sad for the community because the community baltimore citizens were very happy that there were some indictments. We still have five more to go through. But this makes us very much on edge. Reporter yesterday the jury sent a note to the judge saying it was deadlocked. The judge told them to keep deliberating. Officer porter the first of six officers charged in freddie grays death to go on trial again, a mistrial and again the mayor of baltimore and Police Commissioner urging calm and thats what the situation is as far as we know right now in the city of baltimore. In queens, three people including two children were hurt in an accident involving a cement truck. Valerie castro reports from elmhurst with the details. Reporter kristine, you can see that cement truck is still on the scene behind me. Right now, police are questioning the driver of that truck to find out exactly what happened when three people crossing the street were hit. It happened at the border of corona and elmhurst in queens. There is a nearby school and people were picking up children as school let out. Three people were injured, two children and one adult all taken to elmhurst hospital. One woman who saw it says she saw a woman hurt with a serious injury to her leg. I ran over and noticed it was a lady on the floor laying on the floor with one leg already, um, seemed like she was [ indiscernible ] and the little girl maybe two or three years old, she [ indiscernible ] and a lot of people was trying to help them out. Reporter right now its unclear if the pedestrians or the driver of that truck had the right of way. Some witnesses say that the driver did indeed have the right of way when he turned on that corner. Reporter in 2011, the department of Homeland Security got rid of the color coded alert. Red as you remember was hi level, severe risk of attack, green low level. They replaced it with a different alert system to give the public more specifics but its never been activated. So now in addition to those alerts, they are adding detailed bulletins. This is an example of the alert. It was created four years ago, elevated and imminent. In order to activate either there needs to be a credible terrorist threat. But this system has never been deployed. Its time we changed the system. Reporter so the department of Homeland Security is adding a middle level with bulletins. This is a sample of a bulletin. It describes general developments or trends regarding threats of terrorism. Investigators say two students sprayed pepper spray in the hallway at west Babylon High School yesterday. Emergency crews rushed to the school after 34 students fell ill. The School Evacuated classrooms and canceled afternoon activities. The district says the students and the nypd is still searching for an armed robber who stole tens of thousands of the bronx. The holdup led to a wild shootout and now investigators have new details on the suspect and his possible ties to another holdup. From soundview. Reporter police also say this crime is linked to another Armed Robbery at chase bank just three blocks away on december 4. Some city island resident are concerned about the safety of the bridge which is being built to connect the ill to the bronx. Cbs 2s meg baker was there. They are seeking to more than double the sentence from 7 to 15 years. Caught on camera. A daring burglar breaks into a home in a quiet long island town. The security video shows the suspect rummaging through the house on hilltop lane in levittown around 6 00 on saturday evening. Police say the suspect broke into the house through a side door and took off with jewelry and personal papers. The homeowners were not home at the time. And there were no injuries. The widow of an nypd detective is speaking out for the First Time Since her husband was killed in the line of duty. Nearly a year after his death, mrs. Ramos says she is keeping her husbands memory alive by creating the detective rafael ramos foundation. He and his partner detective wenjian liu were executed in their patrol car in brooklyn last december. The foundations goal is to help build a better relationship between the police and community. At least at the end of the year we know that over 3 out of 4, more than 75 of kids who chose antibiotics didnt have to have surge.
