It can now do the job of your doctors stethoscope. Cbs 2s dr. Max gomez shows us how this works. Reporter while most of us couldnt imagine a trip to the doctor without seeing a stethoscope, dr. David bello has a hard time envisioning a future with them. He recently saw patients who experienced scary fluttering sounds in their hearts. And as he listened to them try to describe what happened, he was frustrated by what they said. I would like to share that sound with you. They couldnt do it. So now we have a way to do it. Reporter thanks to this. Its called heart buds. Using this small device an app and a smartphone sounds can now be recorded stored and shared. And to see how it compared with traditional stethoscopes, researchers at Orlando Health put it to the test. We examined four different stethoscope models listening to heart and lung songs, abdominal sounds and vessels in their neck, all the sounds. Reporter they found heart buds picked up sounds just as well as the top stethoscopes on the market and better than disposable ones. Compared to heart buds, disposal stethoscopes missed 43 of heart murmurs and up to 75 of carotid artery blockage. Because they are disposable and sounds are recorded there are fewer contacts between patient and doctors, nurses and medical assistance. That means fewer chances to transmit infection. So with this electronic this portion there will be no more transmitting this stuff between the patients. Reporter it allows patients with chronic diseases like Heart Failure to record their own sounds and send the file to their doctor. Within a few minutes, have it listened to,analyzed and have a report back from their doctors office. Reporter only doctors can use heart buds to actually diagnose patients. But consumers are using them, too. Athletes use heart buds to monitor their performance and pregnant women are using them to record their babys heart sounds in the womb and share them with friends and family. Hm. Reporter its also a terrific teaching tool because when the doctor can hear a certain heart murmur or Something Like that, he can show it to the med students and the residents and so forth and they can hear what exactly it is, that makes a difference. Theres nothing the phone cant do anymore. Seems like it. I still think they need to use the stethoscope at least as an accessor to make it look good. It makes me feel better. [ laughter ] okay. [ laughter ] i love that song, though. Lets check the forecast. We might not love this forecast. Some people will but i dont think most. Nope. Going to be a wet day tomorrow. Its not going to be a pretty one out there. Lets take a peek at what it is like now in new york city. Look out over our skyscrapers and the clouds are overhead but, you know, now that the sun has set, what do you really care, okay . Its going to be a decent night because temperatures are mild enough. Its 56 degrees now. It will be a rainy thursday. Although the temperatures are going to be mild above 60 degrees tomorrow. Tougher rain will be with you for your drive home versus your drive to work. And then the colder air sets up for the weekend. So lets get to that temperature trend. You were 67 on monday. You dropped down to 49 for a high on tuesday. Today you maxed out 58 degrees. Tomorrow with the rain and with no sun you will still be 64 degrees, 57 on friday, the weekend looks to be in the lower 50s and upper 40s. Well show you that extended forecast coming up. Right now vortex satellite and radar, starting to hint to the west of warren county, just getting into the little fringe there on the western borders of warren county. A little drizzle, okay . Thats the sort of thing we would call for tonight. Tomorrow, more significant rain. Again, the low pressure system thats driving this will go up and over the area. Thats the same system that rolled through colorado with those crazy winds and blizzard conditions. Thats not for us but it will push this rain into our area. Well show you how its going to time out. You get to your morning commute, 7 a. M. , could there be some rain out there . I think there will be. I think its the light stuff. The more significant rain would get here later in the day. And wouldnt now right in time to make that evening commute problematic. And then as you get into the late night hours, here we are 11 30, that should have been gone. But the front has now stalled. Now its streaming up some added moisture from the south. So with this new information, this new model run, you have to start considering that there may be some higher rainfall totals around the east end of long island or possibly like around the jersey shore. And then it all clears out for your day on friday, partly to mostly sunny on friday. How much rain . Right now the numbers are suggesting maybe one to two inches of rain with some spots if you catch that second sort of reinvigorated bout of rain, it could be seeing over 2. And again, well keep an eye on that. I think if you were to look at an angle where that would happen it would be like this.
