Reporter police just took a suspect into custody within the last 20 minutes after a twohour search inside a building here along fifth avenue. Behind me, you can see the nypd is still here on the scene wrapping up their investigation. Right now, i want to go to some video of the man in custody. You can see as he is brought out of the building in handcuffs, after police found him inside, no word if he was armed at the time that he was taken into custody. This all started around 2 45 this afternoon after police got word that someone had broken into a building near fifth and 28th. For the next two hours, there was an ongoing exhaustive manhunt for that suspect. Police then got word he might have been barricaded inside 261 fifth avenue. We were there when we saw officers in s. W. A. T. Gear going inside the building while other officers stood watch out front. There are several businesses inside that tall building. Some people we spoke with say they simply left earlier for lunch today and then when they returned, they found a very Large Police Presence and their building blocked off. Apparently, theres some individual inside who may be armed. So reporter were you in the building . I was out to lunch and when i came back, we werent allowed to go back inside. Reporter and everyone else you work with is staying put . Theyre staying put. They have been told not to leave. Yeah. Reporter what do you make of all this . Hopefully its nothing too serious and hopefully they will resolve it quickly and everybody is safe. It dropped a tornado outside of des moines, iowa, and slammed the state with heavy rains and strong winds. The storm system also set off lightning strikes over chicago and dumped more than a foot of snow in parts of the rockies. Now, that same storm system is headed our way. Federal prosecutors also say mcneil suggested a car bombing in front of a church, a school or a mall, as well. U. S. Warplanes are backing kurdish troops in a new offensive to retake sinjar. The strategic city is in northern iraq. Military Officials Say the u. S. Launched at least 20 air strikes against isis this morning. They are hoping to cut off one of its most active supply lines. It runs through the sinjar region to isis strongholds in syria and northern iraq. And developing now, at least 43 people have been killed almost 200 injured in the twin suicide bombings in beirut. Isis claiming responsibility for one of the deadliest attacks in recent years in lebanon. The area is a stronghold for the Shiite Hezbollah Group and has seen violence connected to the conflict in syria. Newark police are searching for two gunmen posing as Police Officers. The suspects allegedly drove up and pulled over an offduty Postal Police officer. It happened at 18 and wynans avenue this morning. Investigators say there was a struggle and one of the suspects opened fire shooting the officer in the hand. This is a rarity for our Postal Police officers. It seems like a random act. Nothing happens on the block. I was surprised to see that. Witnesses say they saw the two suspects running from the scene. The wounded Postal Police officer was treated at a local hospital and released. Its going to be a big night for thursday night football here on cbs 2 as the jets take on the bills. A deal has finally been struck to build two new tunnels under the hudson. Cbs 2 political reporter Marcia Kramer with more now on how this all came together. Everyone including amtrak, governors cuomo and christie and all the federal officials in the firmment are all aboard plans to build whats regarded as the single most important nation. Without it, Officials Say, the collapse. Within seven to 10 years the only tunnels that carry rails under the hudson could collapse. Then there would be a recession, hundreds of thousands will lose their jobs in the new york metropolitan area, and there could be a recession in the whole country. Reporter which is why the deal to build two new rail tunnels under the hudson river is a big deal brokered by two senators along with amtrak, federal transportation officials and the governors of new york and new jersey, the centerpiece is this. A 50 50 split of the costs. The feds pay half, new york and new jersey pay half. This is actually a lot in place here that makes this project far more viable than ago. Reporter the deal involved creating a new entity the Gateway Development corporation to build two new tunnels expected to cost at least 20 billion and be completed by 2030. The project will also include two new tracks between newark and new york for a total of 4 tracks, and include the renovation of the two current tunnels to double the capacity. The old tunnels, 105 years old, are badly deteriorated and damaged by Hurricane Sandy causing huge delays and backups. Its good news. Its great news. Reporter the move marks a sharp aboutface for governor christie who killed an earlier project in 2010. Its about time. We have been waiting for years. Christie blew it when he didnt do it six years ago. I think thats awesome. The situation right now is if a wire goes down in a tunnel, it disrupts traffic in both directions. Now, thankfully, it was just a thrill right and not part of a terror plot. But the theft of a Greyhound Bus is raising concerns about security at the Port Authority bus terminal. Cbs 2s tony aiello has more. Reporter inside the Port Authority bus terminal the talk at gate 72 was about the Greyhound Bus stolen from here the day before. Its dangerous for a person to just take the bus. As a matter of fact, he could have took the bus with people on board like he was a driver. Reporter there were no passengers on the bus when cops found it in brooklyn, just legendary transit trickster Darius Mccollum busted dozens of times for commandeering bus and subway trains. Investigators say Darius Mccollum entered the bus terminal around 1 00 wednesday afternoon intent on stealing a bus but not dressed as a bus driver. His shirt and a phony Homeland Security i. D. Card. A bus driver told me he is not surprised mccollum could get past the greyhound workers at the gate. If he looks legit and has a fak id, its easy to get in. Reporter mccollum said to have a big knowledge of all things transit related no doubt knew the early afternoon was a good time to strike. Theres no one around and its easy to get one at that time. Reporter a Port Authority source says police do random checks at the bus terminal, but greyhound and other carriers are supposed to lock their buses if they are left unattended. Mccollum claims to have commandeered and taken more than 100 buses for joy rides over the past 30 years. Recent charge has been delayed until later tonight. A mother faces dwi charges in a crash in which her four children were hurt. Police say [ nonenglish language ] of brooklyn ran into a garbage truck in wood haven early this morning. Officers arrested the 36year old woman saying she showed signs of intoxication after the collision. She and the children ages 1, 5, 9 and 11, were taken to jamaica hospital and treat for their injuries. A push today to help new york city senior and disabled public advocate Letitia James and several City Council Members are backing new legislation to do just that. This measure would require the Citys Department of sanitation to establish a program to help seniors and people with disabilities to clear their sidewalks of snow. And it would also reduce fines for failure to remove snow by many seniors cant do it. Currently, Property Owners are required to remove snow from in front of their homes and businesses within a certain time frame when snowfall ends. A victory for a community doing battle against extra long trucks. Reporter Officials Say they missed the only letter the new York State Department of transportation sent giving local governments just 30 days to weigh in on the change which was requested by fedex building a new hub at the grumman site in bethpage but tuesday night a town attempt to undo the designation. It unanimously banned big rigs on South Oyster Bay road. Our residents know better than anyone what does and doesnt belong on this road. We have moms, this is a mistake. The attorney for the bethpage Business Park says the town ban may have no teeth and could end up detouring giant trucks on to the only alternatives, like already congested route 106107. Instead of having the straightest route from the long island expressway, trucks will have to go some circuitous routes. Reporter the department of transportation with final say tells cbs 2 it will consult an even higher authority, the administration. Residents say they are now working with the department of transportation to try to get the towns truck back to stick. They believe if this can happen here, it can happen anywhere. The victim was ambushed at a parking garage in philadelphia. Minutes later Surveillance Video captured her pulling into a gas station. Despite the big push to get people to lose weight. The centers for Disease Control says nearly 38 of adults are obese. Thats up from about 32 a decade ago. The obesity rate was significantly higher for women than men. And middleaged people from 40 to 59 had the highest rates of obesity among adults. Its hard to get a lot of energy up on days like this. A doctor says spinning is a pretty safe exercise where you can burn more than 700 calories in an hour in an intense class. The danger is when you go overboard spinning five to seven days a week and taking backtoback classes. Unfortunately, people get injuries from their heads down to their toes because you use your whole body in spinning. A lot of neck pain from repetitive spinning. Thats the only exercise you do. Reporter mixing it up is the best way to stay fit, she says. One day spinning, one day elliptical, one day a little jog. Reporter Susan Rappaport struggled with obesity but turned things around with fitness even running several marathons. Now she has opened new you revolution and created a posture cycle. She says execution is more important than intensity. People focus on the intensity so they are very much in how hard theyre pedaling, how much tension they have. And this affects the body. Reporter she says riders need to stop hunching over and straining their bodies. Posture cycle is all about the posture, no weight on the hands, shoulder back.
