I grabbed clothes i had by the door, my cell phone by the door. And i got out. [ crying ] reporter the force so strong, his windows blown out. Just taken him out of his bedroom. His bedroom window is directly across from the house that exploded. Whether theres an illegal gas connection, propane, has yet to be determined. Reporter victims surviving because they are upstairs sleeping on a holiday. They ride the fall down. Firefighters say luck on their side no big fire with the explosion. We had a flash fire with the initial explosion. We are very fortunate we didnt get a major fire afterwards. It would have been a whole different ballgame. Reporter some neighbors say they smelled gas the day before. Officials say theres no record of it being reported. Hackers are hijacking computers and holding them hostage and to get control of being forced to pay up. Cbs 2s Valerie Castro explains this eransom scam. Reporter liam miller couldnt believe it when her entire computer froze. Whoever hacked my computer had complete access. Reporter hackers locked all her files. She then received a popup ransom note like this one demanding payment to free her computer. It even came with a countdown clock. Basically said pay this ransom before this countdown runs out or youre going to lose all your files forever. Reporter the popup miller received is called, cryptologger but the scam is global and the ram some notes are in different forms called ransomware and once this scream comes up you cant get past it. You cant get any further until you follow the hackers instructions to pay them the ransom. Reporter Cyber Security experts say the ransom demands range from 200 to 1,000. And the criminals often want to be paid in the untraceable its very hard to catch the hackers. Reporter its not just personal computers. Businesses School Districts Even Police Departments have been hit with the uncrackable code of police in swansea, massachusetts, handed over 750 to set their system free. Thats scary. A growing number of footballrelated injuries among Young Athletes has left many parents and experts questioning the safety of americas most popular sport. Reports from the cdc show the number of reported concussions have doubled over the past 10 years. As cbs 2s jamie yuccas reports, a Long Island School is focusing on safer helmets. Reporter the oyster bay baymen take football practice seriously. No one hits with their head. This linebacker learned that lesson the hard way after a concussion last season. I dont remember much from it. I just remember putting on my home after a scrimmage and thinking, how did i get here . Reporter all Football Players including High Schoolers have a 75 chance of concussion. One in five College Players has had more than one. Those numbers and the death of a player at a neighboring school on long island had the board of Education Close to canceling football last year. Instead they bought the Team Fivestar safety rated helmets. The crown of the helmet has a cutout that gives for the player when they have a contact. And another big change, there used to be bolts and excuse over here in front of the bolts and screws over here in front of the forehead. They are now on the temple. Reporter inside there are wireless sensors that notify coaches of potentially dangerous hits. The hightech helmets arent just protecting these players. The data is also helping coaches as well as researchers who are looking at how effective they really are. Theres no perfect helmet that prevents all injuries. His career rating the safety of cars. Now as a Biomedical Engineering professor at Virginia Tech he rates helmets. They are tested on a model filled with sensors and struck 120 times at various angles. He and the team look at how the helmets respond to high and low impact hits. If you move from a one star to the four star, it reduces your risk of concussion by 50 . Reporter thats a big number. Thats a very big number. Yes, coach. Reporter that gives players like perez a stronger defense against injury. These new helmets are safer now. And now nearly half a century later, two vietnam vets forged a special bond unlike any other. Cbs 2s meg baker has the story. Reporter theirs is a lasting bond. In march of 68, he walks in and said were going to vietnam. Im your company commander. I said you got to be kidding me. [ laughter ] and we trained together and went to vietnam together and did paddle together. Reporter vietnam veteran john is helping his army brother henry bill warner another battle. For the troops he would have given and arm and a leg. He said why not a kid in . Reporter he traveled across the country from Washington State to donate a kidney to his old pal who settled in Suffolk County after the war. Warners kidney failed after heart bypass surgery in june 2014 thrusting him into dialysis. After a relative and other donor possibilities didnt work out, john didnt hesitate. Has a lot of meaning to that brothers in arms. Reporter now both 73, their friendship goes back more than 45 years to fort carson, colorado, where they were training to go to war. Both received purple hearts for their service during months of fighting when they got a break they used to pass the time talking about what they would do of at army. Both men married, raised two sons and a daughter but have lives thousands of miles apart. Needless to say, well be inseparable after this.
