And father hqyyou go inside, meres lights where there had been darkness and dust and caked onto the plate. Now its just an unbelievable bring beautiful experience to go inside. Some of the beautiful stained glass windows are just breath takingly beautiful. Windows that honestly, no one has really seen in a number of years. Right on fifth avenue between 50th and 51st street and along fifth avenue, going kt uptown, all the kvgway to 57th i believe, wkkare just throngs of people. That were lucky enough to get tickets to welcome the pope here e to new y. York. And also just behind us, we ok have some students from various catholic high schools xavier i iwt believe. Notre dcw c yes. A girls school. Both located downtown. Right. And also, we also have im not sure if you can see us but q 5g you see \fthe yellow vests behind me . They were over my shoulder. All crust workers that construction workers that worked on the renovation. And got the job done. At st. Patricks cathedral. Exactly and right there, a look at the popemobile. You might ask how did that thing get up here so quickly from washington . It does turn out there are multiple popemobiles throu the myworld. And whenever he travels, so that one as we understand it was outfitted for 0cunew york. And another Jeep Wrangler with open sides and the pope is going to ride in that vehicle and there are the 7 construction workers we were talking about kristine. Proud, proud moments for them. They brought some family members. There are lay members to have lurch and workers at st. And ngot this job down. I mean there was really no choice. No. They did a beautiful job. What a nice treat for them. For him to get a chance to mix with them as well. And to say thank you and to say hello what the pope is all about as ce hes been saying it many times on his trip. He wants to come and lead the people especially everyday people. So the pope set to wr e at kennedy airport. We wubelieve its going to be 5 29 is we7 yweve been gxh7told. Thats the touchdown time. Stations dick brennan is cbs2s dick brennan is on the 2p c tarmac or near the tarmac with a oo hole bunch of excited people too. Dick . Reporter thats right kristine and maurice, its very loud here so bear with me. But were just a few feet away from where the pontiff will be pulling up. Hes going to be pulling up right here on the tarmac. Its right next to the helicopters [which will whisk him away to new york city shortly thereafter and you can see these mobile steps that are going to move out to v pontiff. Hes g going to come down and. Eq hes going to greet about now in the meantime, Cardinal Dolan is here. And bishop of the Brooklyn Diocese is here. Hes going to be greeting pontiff and in addition therell be fiv9svery lucky students of the brooklyn die series, as you can imagine. They are very excited. What would it be like to be among the first to 8 fpersonally greet pope francis facetoface oo in new york . On p,a scale of 1 to 10 its ywga 10. Reporter she moand t kids wil3 usoon be able to tell you. The five kids from the schools in the diocese of brooklyn known ebk6ln25 it tnz immigrants selected to meet and greet pope francis at jfk. It feels exciting. And joyful. Because hes close to god. Reporter the five were selected out of more than 30,000 students in the Brooklyn Diocese. What are you going to say to him . Really nice to meet you. Welcome to brooklyn . Welcome. I appreciate you came here today. Reporter so just what were the qualifications for the kids to meet the pope . Well, very outgoing and energetic child whos not shy. Reporter they will present pope francis with something called a spiritual bouquet. A binder of sorts consisting of x prayers and acts of kindness from each of the dioceses 86 schools in brooklyn and queens. As for the kids, they hope for a blessing, are you a little nervous . Yes. Yes. My heart is d rapid right now. Reporter that would include most of the people who are right here right now. We can tell you of those 200 people who are waiting for the pontiff it oseems everyone has an extraordinary story a little girl told me that she wants the pope to bless her. Because she lost the use of her legs. And in addition, i spoke g to a woman who was 100 years old and not only 100 years old, today me, imagine living w reporter a lot of these people got them through the archdiocese, we can see plane q is coming right down. It looks like an American Airlines plane. And its getting a lrc of cheers here. Were not sure that tv[oi h indeed thats indeed the pontiffs plane thats coming in right now. I2 so p things are just Getting Started here at fsthe airport. The people who are watching are very excited and now it would take a while for the plane to land. And to taxi around here. So it ,achtwould be a couple of moments, more than a couple of moments, minutes, [r\before we can see the pontiff come out of the plane. ;b. Jb so hes go completely around but hes going to come right up to this location then theyre going to wheel out the socalled mobile steps. Now if you saw y this happen b i tell you that it does take a while to get the steps 9out. It takes a while then for the pope to come down but as you can see by whats going on right now, were just minutes away. Kristine and maurice . Very, very exciting. Im glad ykmwe could get that confirmed that that was his Airline Coming in there. We were actually expecting him not for another 20 minutes. And when we heard that we thought wait a minute. Hes the pope. Hes always on time. Nb and then all of a sudden, they sped up. He sure did. He did. But obviously the folks there at j. Ready to greet him wit. J open arms. Also on pc diocese of brooklyn right . The head pjof tin brooklyn. And once 2010, just remember again, just remember, this is pope francis very first trip to the United States and this will be his first time in new york city. And you think about sort of the significance of landing in brooklyn. Were p,talking about a diocese of a million cand a half catholics. A borough of almost five Million People and masses in brooklyn 6opare set ikod8in jnd33 different said in 33 different languages and tdthey have 186 different mparishes and 211 wx therefore he would have the first rite of being able to greet [owuthe holy father. In his diocese. So we talk now a little wfkbit about the pace that j the pope has been keeping . Since he started this adventure to cuba and then 4to our country. The United States . Just watching him has been exhausting. And hes 78 years old. Htvq he has a5this spirit about him that klreally is unbelievable. And even reporters that are traveling with him are tweeting saying my goodness. I dont know how he mdoes this. Im exhausted. Yeah, hes really taken on a full full schedule. Zg7 as we know. And that full schedule, he has not seemed to slow down not for one bit. And not at one point. He just seems to keep going and going. And its a tribute to him. \all right, we are hearing might have been a cheer up going occupy behind us here in believe thats senator Chuck Schumer as well. Greeting the students who are there from a couple of catholic high schools in manhattan. They were giving them a nice happy hell lowell. There will be hello. There will be om this evening. Governor cuomo among others will be here to greet the pontiff when he arrives eventually. This evening. And im kind of wondering as i look here at the people there on the tarmac at jfk and then. Ob these students that are standing behind us, if they realize how ,lucky they are. I mean so moo people would love many people would love to take their place right now right father . Oh yes, absolutely. Anybody ls would really want to be there. Another group thats going to greet him with their music, their bite the drum group and theyre going to be playing new v york new york. Right . By sinatra. Thats big. They are. And they must be excited as well. So youve met Pope John Paul ii and now we should say st. John paul ii, whats that like to meet a pope . Is that something you can prepare for . Its something that happens and then you have to react. I was lucky enough to 2os 9meet john paul ii not once but twice and the first time i actually met him it was in the. 5vatican x and just a quick story. I was in the vatican and we were being presented to his holiness. Each one of us. And of course, it was another bishop whispering in his name ear each one of our names. And when he turned to me and he said it was brand new year ] h he turned to fo1ne and he said happy new year steve and i didnt know what to say. And it wasnt until i 5 walked away when i 2 finally said wait. I should have said happy new year to you as well holiness. Youre right. Maurice its not qesomething that you can necessarily prepare for but just such a wonderful why . Because you know, hes the w. Bringertvof t christ here on earth. Hes the shepherd for millions yttt of catholics around the a5world. And and thats a great amazing thing for us to be able to be able to meet him. The 1esuccessor, its really an extraordinary thing. I got a lump in my throat watching him kiss babies and ;i hug meme and smile at people q, people and smile at people and react to them. Its really a human moment. Its a spiritual ` its very touching and moving and so many different ways. I sxseems like thats when he comes alive. Yes. You know, you hopefully what youre seeing is what really each one of us is preached. Whether iwtwe are in a parish in the bronx, or whether we are the head of the whole Catholic Church. Were priests first and were supposed to be reaching out to our people and embracing our people and bringing our people closer to christ. Thats what he does for the world. He has thus far. Of someone can tell me where he is gobright here. This is at the hell important. Thats right, we should know w3 heliport. Thats right. We should know that. Thats at kennedy airport. We make sure we have that one right. We have the cardinal and we have the bishop and weve got other high officials throughout both of the dioceses and kvcthe archdiocese at kennedy airport. The cardinal can be 6tthere with him l4certainly. He is the metropolitan but it will indeed be the bishop of the area of the diocese who will greet him first, its his place. `qprotocol. Come right back out here to fifth pc cheering fans out here as well. Ko and ill have to say, the qmood out here is just beck see the vatican w flags and the American Flag there flying once again jfrom [osthe cockpit. We know whos on board. Absolutely. And just as we watched him deplane in ywashington, d. C. , people who were getting giddy because they fr just couldnt wait to see him. [ laughter ] after they the door. And it is its a wonderful wonderful experien for so many catholics here in ne. 4 icity and those ithat have traveled from far away just to witness pope francis. Who v say such an impact just in the past two and a half years that he has been pope. Gi very different its safe to say. Its been pope benedict. His style very different. And not necessarily a bad thing. Father norton. Its just two different styles. But lets talk though about L Pope Francis way of being able to connect. With the average person. It goes deep to his roots. I was going to say that he does indeed. It goes right to the root of who he is. And who hes always been. Weve heard that over and over and over again. When he was the cardinal of buenos aires, he would travel the train with the people. Talk with them. Hear their problems and hear their concerns. It is just been who he is all along. And thats what were seeing kor c now on a world stage. And you hear that over and 5a over. I was in washington yesterday. And after one of his and the popemobile. I met somebody who `f from buenos aires, knew him for three decades and kodescribed praying with him. Described being ckzat mass with him. Described visits from him where one to one and look them in the eye and remember their names. And just enjoy being with people. And theres something about that, that has been consistent throughout his whole life. This is not new. This is not a performance. This is who the man clearly is. Hes a pastor. Hes a pastor and a priest and you see that all the time. [ cheering and applause ] you pmay hear some cheering here behind us, were not sure if somebody another dignitary arrived or if Somebody Just took out a camera f and asked everyone to cheer. It 4could have been that as well. Just practicing for when the pope does arrive here at st. Patricks cathedral. Yeah, 8 so heres the american q0 airlines 777 as its \,axiing now to a ramp south of hangar 19. Ht4w\ and they o will wheel up the stairs to the door. And it always takes a few minutes. Even after the door opens before we see the pope. Because theyve got to get everything in order. Make ,13lsure everything is secure. Exactly. And once again, he will be greeted by the 6head of the Brooklyn Diocese, bishop demarzio. The seating arrangements right . The pope gets to sit in Business Class in front and the rest of the plane the filled with journalists and other lay people and the htpeople in the back of the plane sitting in coach get to pay full fare as e kz if they bought Business Class seats and thats how this plane is then paid for. But all eyes on the door when it pops open awaiting pope francis first steps on u. S. Soil. F9shis is a charter flight obviously and he always cxmakes an effort to fly on companies if countries and make sure that he flies with those companies that belong to every country. So when che vsjleaves the vatican, he does fly al italia. That country to nltravel within that country. And it is quite a treat to be able to travel with pope francis because he will get up from his n2Business Class seat. Walk to the back of the plane where the reporters are all sitting in the coach section. And have a very frank conference. And impromptu. Off the his predecessor were told would have first questions sent to him before he answered them. Not so with pope francis, he has a i wcertain ease ft dhim that people have really warned to. Now dick brennan is on the ground there at jfk. How does this feel tmdick . Extraordinary. I mean we are less than a hundred yards from where the mobile staircase was just rolled up cand i can tell you to my right we can see oCardinal Dolan, bishop and archbishop uza of the holy see, they are standing waiting to approach this American Airlines jet and just totalist of sis is a throng people who i to the x left of us is a throng of people who are strangely silent. I think theyre a little bit in awe and s q band from the high school over to our mright. We havent heard from them yet. But i think they will strike up the band momentarily. We see some people obviously walking up the steps and not quite ready to vou up the doors, i asked Cardinal Dolan by the way yesterday, what p would be the first words you would say to the pope . Ling and Cardinal Dolan said to me, oh first thing id say would be what took you so long . Remember fofhaman is 78 years old. Hes never visited the United States. And qin fact, i asked Cardinal Dolan you know some have said maybe you know its jfa thing about jocapitalism. He said 5 what it is, is hes just a plain old home body. According to the archdiocese d2< before he came pope for his first became pope for his 6ifircj76 years, he had hardly gone around the world. In fact he became critical of bishop who is traveled a bishoped who traveled a lot. This man believes the most Important Role of p o the bishop of a parish to tend to p and his poor. And thats exactly what this man has been doing his whole life. Then hes been to 15 countries and then on this trip, weve got a couple more. So now hes up to 17. Its something hes not really entirely comfortable with. But i have to tell you a lot of people saying once hes yjodone with this trip hes going to realize e how much hes loved. Staff members exiting the plane. Photographer. Steps. Obviously to capture images of pope francis and his visit. City. And we saw when he was in washington he was standing off to the left there waiting for the word go. We cant get a look at him just yet but we know its just a couple of moments away. ;o d and there we see mr. Alberto gaspari. Hes the coordinator of qjj9wxthe papal visit. A very, very jnvfamiliar face. Anyone that is familiar with the popes travels. You often see him by oh there we see his zucchetto. His hat. We see a glimpse of him . Oh yes, there he is. There he is in the background. Crowd starting to see him and theyre 2g . Hq6you can hear the cheering. [ cheering and applause ] now also, you will see along d8 pope francis side is monsignor mark miles, theres pope applause ] gob [ cheering and applause ] ce g q0 what a moment. The pope in new york. Cardinal dolan and a host of others. Archbishop as well. The permanent observer of the holy seat to the United Nations and right there right behind miles. Glassed. He has m been by the popes side this entire trip. He is his translator. His english is really good. Rxmhis english is very good. And he 5ahelps the pope in all of sure that nobody is misunderstood and i have to say, he does his job very well. He is there but hes not there. Thats right. And now the pope as he meets the children you see the 7s broad grin on his face. He gave a blessing to one of the little girls. And thats m owhen hes at his9to absolute happiness. You see that big smile. U er norton . Popes 0in new york. Yeah, its its its very exciting. Its really wonderful to watch. And just a great blessing, a great great for qkus as c2[whole city. Its really just a great grace. Well, we luknow that his work, what the less fortunate is what he really lives on. And greeting them or greeting the pope is also 200 mypeople, tjt diocese. That okwere able 8to get that special envy vision to join their pinvitation to join their bishops and archbishops to welcome the pope qth5hq and it will definitely hold special meaning im sure for pope francis. P planned but you never know with this jopontiff. Who pflmemhes about spontaneity. Dick brennan youre nright there. Hes coming towards you. Reporter its pretty extraordinaryxk hes moving towards the crowd. And his face his ppgeface is a absolutely beaming. Hes seemingly enjoying this. The band is playing and hes people for one theres a disabled man whos about 15 years old. Who wanted the gm0pope to come and talk to his man with palsy and i think thats where hes talking over to o7kright \fnow. A number i of people along the gateline are people who want a blessing and need the popes prayers. People who are sick. Some people theres at least one person who is homeless. Theres a gentleman lying on a stretcher and as i pxdsaid he has cerebral palsy. sif i only i could be touched by the pope. This is that magical moment that os many of the so many of the people came for. A lot of them really want something from the pontiff. A miracle in some cases. Because their lives have been so devastated but they say many of them when i talked to them earlier said this was one of the best days of their lives. Tell me what thats like. How close are you . Reporter right now about 100 feet. Im behind a large group of people. But i will step up and get a better view because why not . And i can tell you whats p interesting now is the pontiff has waded into the crowd and hes moving much more slowly than weve seen him dop abefore. This almost looks like some of the stuff he does in vatican square and he moves slowly and he talks to people and he engages cthem. Weve vklseen on other lines particularly some of them in washington, d. C. Where he would sort of glide along but i think hes sort of caught up in the moment and the humanity of the people hes coming to now 1are people who are desperately needing of his care. People who have issues, they have health issues. Some of them are old and they say theyre in pain and theyre suffering and remember, this pontiff says that his pontificate is u helping the suffering and only to come by. Weve seen some stories in the last few days of what happened when john paul was here he touched people a. Sand it changes their lives for decades to come. But right now he seems absolutely rgpengaged and very much enjoying his first taste of new york city. And we can ovfeel the screens to tell you jfthe truth dick, you can tell hes touching loves right now. These are moments that will live forever in the hearts of the people hes touching right now. We should point out thatzeuhe is moving slowly. Yet hes 78 and also got a case of sciatica. And anybody whos had back trouble and that shooting pain down the leg you know that what lu thats about. Kind of makes it tough to get arnold but you have to marvel a4vqhis fortitude pushing through this. We have to u likmmxefc8czmgx la . Cp ax3pnx g w was 7 was he became very ill and had to get jffo part of his lung removed. And it saved his life by having that operation but it does impede a lot of his actions and sometimes when we army him speaking n1softly, a jgclot of t people attribute that, that softspokenness because of the that surgery and he had that condition. Now as [osexcited as everyone is, security has been a big concern here to make sure that [os the pope is at his safest during his entire visit here to new york city and its been a joint effort 3wby o the secret e service, the vatican police. The nypd. Fbi. Fbi. And you can see some of those7 representatives there scanning the crowd. Making sure that everything is okay. But i ujhave to say, the pope does not shun anyone away. O u u hto reach out and security i think is the last thing zk7on his mind. Would you agree dr. Norton . I think thats exactly to your point about security. And the need ]for it. And for their concern holy father as well they should be, but he doesnt have that av kind of concern. He never brings bad that concern with him. He believes hes serving in christs name which of couzmw he is. And he believes that the lord z0will well, take him and protect him. Help him. Strengthen him and give him all jf that he needs and every trip that he takes and you can see this looking right on the screen right now. He is the priest who is greeting his people. They are in bene airest,. Nb om they are in new york. Buenos aires, they are in new york, but theyre everywhere else. Dick brennan reporter im about hes walking a little further away but im getting a little closer. Because ive got a little longer cable on my camera. I can tell you weve seen some zkm things that hes done that werent always apparent on what was happening on camera. He gave very broad hugs to a few something we had nnot seen before. And he seems to be engaging in longer conversations. Remember, he is 78 years old and his english is not great. Imm dpghwhen f`i gmjwas walking along nl this line before, i encountered a number of oopeople who wem. Speaking italian. So its quite possible that hes engaging xthe people in the language that hes comfortable with and there we dick i dont know if you can see that but someone just gave him a bobblehead . It looked like a stuffed animal one of the stuffed dolls. Hes real practiced at taking gifts uand sort of handing them over 2osand thanking people for them and thats what hes done right there as is being ushered away. Looks like hes going to get into a vehicle. Go ahead dick. Reporter i could just tell you that little girl hes stopped by to talk kjkto. Shes a teenager and she lost her ability to walk and she told zo7me her mother also told me that all she wanted was a touch from the pope because they have no idea what is wronsspwith her. Ip she did get her we are for the day and we wish for the fday < and we pray she gets the miracle she needs. There we see him walking what we believe is toward ahthe car that will w and make his way uptown to fifth avenue. ] l4 where he will switch into the outfitted Jeep Wrangler and to the new york city popemobile. For his ride no. Here to st. Patricks cathedral. [ bell dinging ] but right now, its time to fire up the chopper. And heres a tip for any of you wanting to catch a glimpse of the motorcade and you want to spot the pope. The father lombardi said its easy to spot pope francis car in the motorcade. Its the smallest to[ione. [ laughter ] its so vehicling right . U striking right . He talks about environmentalism and humility and then he goes out and list it. No suv, no limousine. Walk. And drives the drive. He lives by example which is 1e what he believes is what jesus wanted us to do. Live by example. He said sometimes words dont actions mean everything. And u. If you notice, even with the pope mobile itself, no longer do you see it entire place encased. You know, hes opened that up and he doesnt want to doesnt want to be away from his people. He really wants to be able to reach out and touch them. No part of being ]iin the buck. Exactly right. Chris two pnhelicopters actually about to take off. You cant help hes been the one and im sure the other one is more of the escort or maybe even transporting the other staff. The cardinals and bishops. Absolutely. So from here, he will land at the pgevom`heliport downtown one. And his pmotorcade will be what we refer to as a fast motorcade. He will be in and they will make their way uptown and were not quite sure where they are ko2going to turn to make their way on to fifth avenue. But we can tell you that people are lined up, i believe all wo the way to 57th street. Gm0 so theyre lined up seven blocks from where we are. Oh, yeah. At least a couple hundred yards is what its like. And we are running a bit behind. I would say ten, 15 minutes behind and i have b. A feeling when down fifth ave. d really go slow and pope francis is really going to want to take in what he is seeing here 5aand then just the majesty of st. Patricks cathedral as he arrives here. Vin this gleaming cathedral, i hadnt seen it in a while and i goodness. Cathedral is. Both inside and youll see the beauty of d the inside of it tonight. Vespers. Which the thoughliness holiness will lead fo1the priests q and the religious that are people. But youll see inside how beautiful so many of the stained glass windows that have not been seen before. Colors during the course of every day now. And not only have the outside, 7mmd the gleaming white, again with the sun setting, you can real. See that gleaming White Building that as we talked about before when right . In the middle of gna field and the archbishop at the time was made fun of and told this is a folly. And no one is going to go up that far. And here we are in midtown manhattan. They laughed at him and as we said 177 million restoration. And when you look at it at this time of day, as the sun begins to set and its really a golden time of day, i dont think st. Looked better. No i agree. Really its a beautiful time. Majesty that the cathedral holds inside, how do you think he will react though . Hes a very simple man. Can be. But surely, he will respect the this structure. Well, of course. You know, because he is a man of the church. And so he is certainly going to embrace and v 0respect all that the tradition of the cathedral and other churches of new york have. And you know, has been contained over these many, many years of its being being built. Plus slsyou know the history not only of cardinals 1. L mwho have gone before archbishops who are buried there and some very in that cathedral. Bishop fulton see man on tv for so long. So many years. Dick brennan you still there at jfk . Reporter i am still here. As were waiting gfor the helicopter to take off. I can tell you that dignitaries are into the second chopper and other. It appears theyre waiting at least until the other one gets up to speed. You know a lot of people were joke asking saying this is definitely not the pontiffs mode of transportation. In the fiat in fn washington and he definitely does not prefer what will archbishop uza told me. The fancy stuff. I guess the helicopter is about as fancy as you can get. But for obvious reasons its a lot safer and in terms of Security Press and uits a lot faster, all those people awaiting him in lmanhattan will be seeing him that much more dick i dont know ahif your microphone permits it. Can you get reaction from any of the people who saw the pontiff and irwtouched him and were u xeblessed by him . Who just soaked in that moment. I dont know if thats possible technically. Reporter as of in split second a7no, but we are moving in that direction right now were penned in and they are they gxare penned koin. But i believe once the helicopter clears we should be able to move around a little more carefully and hopefully speak to some of these poem who just people who just wckyhot the pontiff. You look at their faces right now. Just a momentous life changing kind of moment at least right . It certainly is and maurice, on personal swnote, i can tell you we covered these things all the time. This 4 is a Major International event. But to see the pontiff at the catholic watching him from such a close distance, it apenalties us all in a very personal day way. So way. So i can only imagine the people here who are coming with a real serious disability or illness and are really desperate. What it must mean to them. Because its so incredibly touching to watch this man. What an opportunity and experience. It is extraordinary to me that he did spend so much time here. Because this was not supposed to be uone of p events. This was just something that if you will that were shoe horning in when he got off the plane. For all the people to get that kind of time and attention is extraordinary, in the pope 1 g mobile going down fifth avenue he may have one or two people run up if we saw the little kids going up to gqhim and sometimes the secret Service Brings babies up to him. But this was really oneonone special time with perhaps one of the most extraordinary men in the qworld. Incomparable moment a lifetime memory right there. I dont know if you kvccan hear it behind us, but it will across the street at st. Patricks jcathedral. Maybe theyre practicing their cheers. Maybe theyre practicing their waves but ppgethey are getting into the mood. Theyre warming up their voices. Thats what it is. Clearing their throats and they are right across the street from hi dguys. Captioner transition ] p but why cant we talk about it . And why cant we be pearful and open about peaceful and open about it . He also gave a duty to congressional members today. Father norton we talked about this earlier today. Are the people that were elected to represent you are the face of the people of this country. He called them. And that really should be challenging them to be able to represent them according to the peoples desire. Thats what theyre supposed to be doing. Were you surprised about the directness of his message . This sort of simplicity . When i say simple. I mean the clear language and concise language . But direct to the point this is what i believe. He said all life matters and didnt emphasize abortion, he emphasized the Death Penalty calling for it to be ended everywhere including here. Right. I mean i think you know, now were heard him and a number of times in that simple clear directive way that is his style. So he shouldnt be surprised any longer. Hear this simple clear message from the pope . With no apology and no holding back. And yet, does it with a great love and respect to the audience that he is addressing no matter where he goes in the world. So his message was right on key. On so many levels. The respect of life and dignity from moment of conception to natural death including as you already said you know, the Death Penalty. All those are very, very important key aspects for him. Watching him paying attention to the poor, to those who are marginalized and suffering in any way and he said that. But what does that mean for us as people to have United States . Who are we as a Catholic Church marginalizing and pushing away . The holy father wants us to go out and reach out to the people on the streets. Not be locked inside church. Beautiful churches as they are, he still wants us out on the what he did as bishop. Traveled on Public Transportation and often we interviewed his silversmith. He would go and give him jewelry and he would take the money and go buy food for the poor or help another family in need in any way. Just unselfish love by this pope. And he also has been accused, father, by some, of being a progressive pope. And he was challenged on the trip from cuba in the papal plane on that very issue. And he said well, give me one example where i changed my view. And they couldnt give him an example because he hasnt changed his views on those big issues that the Catholic Church stands upon. Death penalty, birth control, gay marriage. We see the helicopter with pope francis taking off heading into manhattan from the wall street heliport and hes going to drive and make his way right here to fifth avenue. To st. Patricks cathedral for prayers tonight. We should bring in senator Chuck Schumer is right here. Were you okay were going to grab him in two seconds. Coming up he was there for the address in Congress Today and well talk with him in just a moment. Just finish up my thought where he has not changed his view on his issues but he is asking it will Catholic Church the Catholic Church in particular priests to say you know what . Just dont be so judgmental. Open your arms to these people and understand and forgive. And you mentioned it before. And that is that hes open to having a discussion. Open to having a dialogue. And thats very refreshing. And thats very, very wonderful for us as a church. Lets Start Talking about some of these real to real issues not sweep our upons under the carpet. Right. Exactly right. We want to maybe hopefully check in with some of the reporters that are along the route here. I know that lou young is a few blocks up from us. And if we are ready to check in with him. Im sure that he has been talking to a lot of very before that, we have senator Chuck Schumer. Look who just showed up. Senator come up here. Appreciate it. Good evening. Weve got you. So you were in you were at the joint house of the joint session meeting, what was that like . I had the good fortune of seeing the holy father twice, on the way in. I said i admire you so, he said thank you. Senator leahy said the hymn im the longest to him im the longest serving catholic in the senate and i loved your speech. I said im not even catholic and you were incredible. He laughed. Everyone in congress was impressed by his speech. Didnt matter what your politics were. What your party was. Hes a man of humanity. But a brilliant man of humanity. And he spoke about raising the human spirit. About all of us coming together to do better for ourselves and for our brothers and sisters and for the world. And you know, my hope is that he inspired congress to work better together. Amazing. Pretty blunt language. He was pretty tough about it. He was tough. What about the tone . He was tough but he was soft spoken. And he was nonpolitical. I sort of was just great i mean. Ive seen a lot of speeches in my life and it was one of the very best ive ever seen. He is he is a moral man. He is a holy man. Hes a softspoken man but its such a powerful man. In his words. Oh yea. And and who he is. What he said today. He obviously brushed up on the American History because he oh, yeah. He had made references to Martin Luther king jr. , to abraham lincoln. Four great americans of different types. Absolutely, the internet dubbed them the fantastic four. Yeah. They are. That he mentioned. The other is doris day and thomas mu rton. Its one thing to make a wonderful speech and to touch peoples hearts and minds. Does it change anything . Yes. You know this in the state of thedown, you have one side getting up and clapping the other side sits down everyone gave him a standing ovation from the most liberal to the most conservative together and everyone inbetween. So i think it could really change things. I hope it does. I really hope it does. My spine was tingling. Thats how great it was. And ive seen a lot of speeches. All right. Senator schumer thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you senator. We appreciate it. Thank you for sharing some time with us. Lou young is just a few blocks up from us here on fifth avenue. He is along the route that the pope will come down when he enters into his popemobile. Lou, how are the folks there . Reporter we are packed in here. 56th and fifth from curb to this is the part of the route where you dont need necessarily tickets or special screening to get in. And people are jammed in and i want to you know show you the crowd here and take a look down there. You can see the popemobile. Which is parked right there in the middle of the remarkable road here. Fifth avenue, the boulevard of con spinous consumption can this very humble pope who as dick brennan said doesnt like fancy things, hes parked between between ralph lauren and henry bindle and probably wont be visiting the stores. The folks here have been waiting a very long time to see him. The prize though goes to argentina julio can i get by here buddy . Thank you. Argentina has been here since . How long you been here . Since reporter okay. Shes been 60 hours and 3 00 a. M. English english not her strength. But her perseverance meant that she gets interviewed first and you were here because your grandchildren are very sick or had been very sick. Yeah. Reporter and youre from Washington Heights and you wanted to see him. Washington heights no english. Reporter no english. Okay. But a lot of faith. We have here folks who do know english, the family from orlando, florida. This is nick and carol. Carol was texting her priest back home that they were seeing the pope and youre not right . Yes were seeing the pope and youre not but were here to cheer you on. Reporter how big a deal is it . This is a big deal. Were part of most precious blood back in florida. Just really a strong believers in the Catholic Church and this just so important to be here to see the pope. Reporter but this pope breath of fresh rare or not . Or air or not . Or is the change disturbing. Absolutely a breath of fresh air, a terrific leader. And we need that here in our country. Reporter and youve been waiting a couple of hours yourself. Oh yes we have. Such a humble man and really cares for everybody and just so excited to see him. Reporter up to running tunnel to towers on sunday and we may see them again. Julio here we mentioned him a short time ago. Julio, valdez. Yes. Reporter from panama, your wife diane is here with you right . Mars yea. And you were here for a trip and you decided to stay an extra day because of this. We were blessed to be here and we were invited here for another occasion and decided to extend our trip. Reporter tell them the occasion. We had a private dinner with maria from panama too. Reporter he gets to see meet Mariano Rivera and the pope in the same week. We were blessed because of that. Hispanic. Reporter you are very grateful too. A cancer survivor i understand. Yes i am. Im a cancer Ovarian Cancer survivor and im here because i think the pope is special person. He only gives us messages of peace. Disarm people by his speech sweet speeches about love, about caring for others. About giving your heart for the others that are sick or worse condition than you are. So its special. This is special person. Reporter youve been here a number of hours too and this is my friend maria. Im going to let you stay anyway. Maria sanchez from jackson heights. Yes. Reporter you said you wanted to see the pope why . Youre a fifth grader right. Yes. I want to see the pope because hes different than donald trump because [ laughter ] donald trump wants to kick the immigrants out and reporter well we dont want to get too much into that. Donald trump lives across the street. Take a look right here. And came out on the sidewalk a short time ago. About an hour or so ago and there were some cheers but there were a lot of negative reactions to this sight and i wanted to ask you about that. But the pope, his menace message, do you feel hes his message, do you feel hes a special guy and a lot of young people you know dont understand what the pope is. The pope is a nice person equally because all of us are the same. And he doesnt judge people if theyre immigrants or theyre not. Reporter you like what he says about the immigrants right . Yeah. Reporter you hear your mom talking about that too right . Yeah. Reporter shes back there further in the crowd. One other person i wanted to speak to. Stella quan. How are you darling . All right. Reporter you have seen the pope before. This is your second viewing of this pope. Tell me about it. He was in seoul, south korea this past august. Reporter you live on the Upper West Side now. Reporter now, but i was living in korea last year many he came to korea. This was wonderful. Reporter this is the t shirt. What does it say . It says may peace be with you. Reporter why do you want to just catch a glimpse of this guy . What does he mean to you and how does he touch you . He sends a message of compassion and love and inclusiveness and i think in this day and age we really knead that message. Need that message. Reporter you feel it dont you . I do. Reporter you my dear i see youve got the the dollar flags that were sealing and were not sure selling and were not sure if these are officially authorized flags or not but they were selling them here, how important is the pope to you man . Hes very important for all of us because hes a very good person and he represents all the Latino American people. And hes full of love for everybody. In this world. And we love him. Reporter and this was again your name again . My name is christina from houston. Reporter from houston. Tall way and you came for . Yes all of us from houston. Reporter all here, you had people who were from all over the city. All over the country. And all of them very, very enthuse whereatic about seeing this enthusiastic about seeing this pontiff. What they call the high speed motorcade and then well switch over into the popemobile at that spot. Beyond that spot, there are the people who have tickets and have security clearance and glims of the pope but the people here roll very, very excited, we can talk to them all day. You want to hear more from them . Come on back in a little bit. Thank you lou. Thank you. At some point we just cant get enough of them but right now were looking at the group of dignitaries, Church Leaders and officials who have just gotten off of one of the two helicopters that came with the pope from kennedy airport. Thats the wall street helipad and they are making their way into various vehicles to head over the st. Patricks cathedral and they will be joining the problem tiff for vespers or Evening Prayer Service tonight. The vehicles is the fiat that we sight in front of us. Thats right. Its loaded and ready to go. Awaiting his arrival. Just a few seconds really now from now when he get off that hotter at the wall street chopper at the wall street helipad. From washington now to new york, i mean cuba and beyond, people have the same sort of reaction to him. Its a gut level. This man is touching me. No matter theyre young, old, this country, that country. Its really an extraordinary thing to see. We saw a good taste of it there with lou and now our cameras are catching the choppers coming into the helipad. Maybe its that one. And we believe that one of to helicopters did carrying some of the dignitaries and the popes staff did arrive. And then we believe that this is the chopper governor . Pope francis is flying . And we also saw u. S. Coast guard. Look at there. So beautiful. The statue of liberty. And i know that there was a mention that pope francis wanted to see the statue of liberty. He got to do a little flyby. Is that what hes doing . Governor cuomo is actually walking by and joining us right now. Were watching live on the air as the pope is landing right there at the helipad. And lower manhattan. I mean what a moment. Can you even put into words what youre experiencing and what youre feeling . You know weve had a lot of great events here in the city. A lot of fanfare, its the greatest state in the country and greatest state on the globe i believe. Weve seen a lot. But this is really special and i think not just because its the pope. I think its this pope. And this popes message and how well he delivers it and how well he lives it. Its its great for catholics and im a roman catholic, but i believe his message transcends any one religion because the message of catholics comes down to jesus is about love. But thats also what protestants believe and what people are taught and its judaism and love one another. And the derivations of love. Compassion, forgiveness, nonjudgmentallism and when you see him, he just communicates that with his being. His bearing. You know [ laughter ] he just wants to say i am al for the common a for the common man and the common man needs a champion and pope francis they have one. And youre taking care of the environment. Yes, yes. Now youre part of the welcoming committee if i can call it that. Informally. When he comes to the steps of st. Patricks cathedral have you rehearsed what you will say . Do you imagine what its going to be like . I think im going to try a little spontaneity. But im just going to thank him so much for coming to new york and were honored of the him and just for me as a former altar boy, this is just a real personal treat. You know in my job, you dont get a lot of perks. You get a lot of people unhappy with you. But this is a special day and it really is. I know that his words and his work have inspired just some action here in recent days. And that is preaching out and helping the homeless here in new york city which has gotten a lot of press lately because more and more of it and now theres this initiative inspired by the pope where we are seeking action, you know the leaders are now taking action to open up the doors. The popes message on immigration is right when he says hes an immigrant. You know, i love to say it the new yorkers when were going to argue about immigration reform, how many native americans here raise your hand . Nobody raises their hand. That means everybody is an immigrant. Right . And he says that. Were all immigrants and dont forget who you are and where you came from. Dont forget the least of us, matthew 25. Thats the homeless. Weve gotten to a point in society where we walk past people on the sidewalk. You know. What does that say about us . So he is reminding us of some very basic truths that we need to hear. And hes living it and its inspirational and its good news in a world of bad news. Very much needed it and its just an honor that its here in new york today. What about the way hes been so direct and blunt and concise and to the point . In terms of the things he thinks are important and telling the American People at the white house, he said it in congress. Hes going to say it at the u. N. And hes going to say it every step of the way, what about that . I love it. I think first of all new yorkers love it right . We are a blunt direct group of people. And we appreciate it. And he says he says it nicely. He says the italians would say with a civilized tone and with decorum. But he communicates directly what he wants to communicate and i think new yorkers respect it. He welcomes that discussion. Yes he does. And we need that discussion. We really do. Its about leadership. Its about inspiration. Its about spirituality. And its about commonality. He is a Catholic Pope but i think he speaks for jewish people and muslim people and protestants all across all across this country. I want to say that the fiat has now pulled up to the helicopter that we had just landed there with pope francis on board. And this is the vehicle of choice for our pontiff. Who i mentioned earlier that father lombardi a spokesperson made a joke the other day. Saying its easy to spot him in the moe tar cade. Its the motorcade. Its the smallest car in the motorcade. Not to put you on the spot or anything, are you inspired to go into a smarter vehicle or anything governor . Im looking into a fiat as a matter of fact. I want to buy that one. Its been blessed we know that much. Yes it has been. But its one thing to talk, he talks really well. He communicates especially well. He inspires people but then what about action . Christine talked about homelessness in the town, what are we going to see being done about that . Hes brought it to our attention in a way that it hasnt been before. Look i hope, when youre in my position, what will youre hoping for what youre hoping for is that people actually get it right . And that we have Popular Support for an initiative and people are mobilized behind something. And i think we can see the pope spurring social action even here in new york state. I think hes saying to people lets take a look inside and lets slow down and take deep breath. Whats important . How do we treat one another . How do you let Homeless People stay on the streets . How have you allowed all this division among you and all this anger among you . And i think its going to resonate and i hope it resonates. All right. The position is to be a teacher. And to inspire. And im certain that he is done a lot of that since he landed here in the United States. Governor cuomo, thank you so much for your time. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Appreciate it governor thank you. Nice to see you. Appreciate it take care. Governor cuomo as we watch the motorcade. The pontiff has gotten into the fiat. Hes seizing which side . I believe on the passenger right side. Thats a good thing for us because that means were on the right side. Were on the right side. Of that vehicle. When it gets to st. Patricks cathedral. Yes. Because hes going to be coming downtown. So that will be the side we hope hell step out on. No u. And go around and fake the steps. Hell have to pass by us at one point. Can you tell were a little excited to see the pontiff . I know. Hoping he was going to be an the passenger right side. Which tends to be a side he favors during this trip. This is meaningful to anybody. A roar is going up in the crowds because they see Police Vehicles and they think that means something but we cant really tell them from here that theyve got some time. You know i dont think the pope the going to stop for any red lights. Afeeling this i have a feeling theyre going to zip uptown and get here very quickly and officially. As no motorcade as before right . Because as we noticed today in the city people really took warnings well and also didnt show up. So people took the day off. Schools were closed yesterday. I know. So it should be a pretty smooth ride up here. Now cbs2s alice gainer is on fifth avenue at 60th street and we understand they are deep on the sidewalks there as well. Alice . Reporter thats right maurice, were here as you said at 60th and fifth kind of the outskirts if you will of the main event here. Just a little while ago it was only me and my crew. We were the only people here and now, within the past 30 minutes, all of these folks have shown up a little while ago they closed off the street completely here to traffic. I heard you talking people were getting excited. They heard the sirens going off. Thinking maybe the poem was on his way. Not just yet. Were hoping he comes through this right mary ann from hastings on hudson is here, why come out here . I think that for me, the pope francis is a man that is able to find god in all things. Hes able to find the sacred in everyone. Everyone. And the way he reaches out to people who other people wouldnt reach out to. It just it just makes me joyous and i think he is a joyous person also. Reporter not quite as close as the other folks the st. Patricks cathedral. The crowds here earlier just me and you for a while. So why come over here and why not go further to where everyone is . I wasnt sure that i could get into that area. Off earlier in the day. So i kind of figured i might have if we see him i kind personal experience here. Just you know, youre not fighting the crowds. Youre reporter we were talking strategy earlier and thinking maybe the window is rolled down on the carr and maybe come over and wave. That was a plan. Reporter when it was just us, but now take a look again along fifth avenue here all of these folks have come out. Theyve got the street completely closed off here. I want to also introduce you to another couple. They are here from germany. They were in d. C. With the pope and now youre here. Im carlene. Youre following the pope . Yes. Reporter earlier you told me hes following you. Yes. Oh then she wants to visit our friends in minneapolis. Minnesota. Then we went to washington. And then we follow the preparations of security for the pope. Reporter and you had to be rear here, why . Here, why . To visit our friends. Now in washington and now new york. Reporter why come out here for the pope . What is so special about being here in this moment right now . Its its a special and its very nice to see him. We are lucky to have him okay. Possibility to see him here now. Reporter were hoping right here along fifth. We dont know. Not going to be in the pope jeep over here, but maybe hell roll down the window. You never know with him right . Never. Reporter open joy the trip and maurice can kristine thats what we have here alongivity fifth avenue. Along fifth avenue. Mary ann already took off. Back to you. Okay alice. Thats for sure, we can see the live picture here. The fiat is now in motion. And pope francis is making his way uptown where he will then change vehicles and get into the Jeep Wrangler, the open air Jeep Wrangler that does have a protective barrier along the front and the back. But then, he will take a what they refer to as a slow motorcade at that point. You know its interesting he and i dont know, im seeing vehicles going downtown. Yeah, its open for him. But theres traffic going southbound on the fdr drive right now. Which is kind of a striking image right . You know, he drives in a fiat. Which is kind of interesting that hes chosen that car. Because it is in the catholic tradition, it is that fiat that yes, that mary said to the angel when the angel came to say that she was going to be the mother of god, and and we in the catholic faith will say that was her fiat. Very interesting point. So he drives a fiat which is kind of interesting and so hes still saying yes to the lord. And as he drives around. And the affirmative. In the affirmative. He was telling priests to say yes to say that yesterday during one of the masses. Or during i think it was during the bishops meeting yesterday. Correct . In washington. Correct and i think that too is his call to his brother priests and brother bishops is say yes. To be out there with his our people. Ling and expound on that a little bit. When you say yes we mean embrace people correct. Welcome them. Of all of all places, of all races. Of all types of people. To say yes to what weve been called to which is to serve gods people. Thats what we said the day we were ordained ive come to serve. Yes and hes that example for us thank you father. I have to tell you yesterday when i was in washington and we tried to get aglimmers of the pope. We were about 100 yards away. Maybe 150 and we saw him for about five seconds. And it was magical. And so we can understand why these people and there we see the motorcade. Coming up the fdr drive. I think thats not far from 14th or 23rd street. If im not mistaken right now as you come uptown but they have clear sailing and a wide open fdr right now. Obviously closed the northbound side of the fdr down to that pope francis wouldnt have any trouble and obviously for security reasons as well. One thing i have noticed maurice and you can touch on this more, since you were down in washington, d. C. , a lot of motorcades they got the sirens blowing and you know blaring rather and a lot of commotion. His motorcades are silent. Pretty quiet right . Yeah and theres not a lot of commotion other than the crowd welcoming him and cheering him on. But other than that its very smooth and very quiet. It speaks volumes doesnt it [ laughter ] yes. Biggest man on the planet. Walks very quietly and then you have other officials who are say dog catchers with full sirens moving around town. We know how that goes. Maybe a subtle message there. Yeah, yeah. A message taken. No, but i was saying yesterday, we were a good 150 yards away from the pontiff and seeing him for just a glimpse, what a picture of the statue of liberty there. Just a look was such a cool moment and such an emotional goose bump kind of moment as i or how far you are. Thats what its like, our meg baker is a good 14, 13 blocks away from us right now but the people are going to get a chance to see him if only from a little distance, meg what do you have . [ no audio ] reporter kristine and maurice, no denying the energy here along fifth avenue. We are between 53rd and 52nd street. This is within the ticketed area and many of these people have been here since 11 00 a. M. They lined up first to get through security and now to get through the black fence and now all pushed up along the barrier. The mood, everyone is very calm. Very complete theyre letting the young ones get up close and letting the elderly get up close just to get a look at the pope. Now earlier before we knew the pope was in new york city most people were on the ground. Now you can see everyone is on their feet and as soon as we hear cheers further down everyone is on their tiptoes. So ill introduce you to some friends i made fear from jersey city, this is stewart and luke. And so you guys are expecting that the pope might get out of his vehicle. Yeah. Im really hoping he stops right here because then i could just like give him a first pump for something and that would be really awesome. Reporter your school a Catholic School. What does he say to you . Liz message is about like work being so sacred. Student life and also glowing up and you know that your existence is really important to god and stuff. Reporter so hes [ inaudible ] 25 of us. People on fifth avenue. You know, dick brennan was at the airport when the pope landed. And he talked with some of the people who assembled to see him and ma a momenter what a moment for them. Reporter julia, how come youre in the wheelchair . I understand youre fighting a tough fight right . Well, ive been undiagnosed for four months and i have a clinical diagnosis of lyme disease. But i dont know we dont know yet. Reporter but youre confined to the wheelchair. Yes. Reporter you lost your ability to walk. Yes. Reporter and why did you come here today . I came here because i wanted to meet the pope. Because i believe in a miracle. Reporter you believe in a miracle. And then you saw him. What was that like . It was it was the most precious moment of my life. And i have to thank sister joan from st. Bernadette school and all the students from the school. Theyve been by my side and made this happen for me. Reporter were you able to hear him say anything . No. But no, but he touched me. Reporter he touched you. Dill you say anything to him . Yes, i said bless me father. Reporter did he not smile . He nodded. Reporter he nodded. And this probably took just a few seconds . Yes. Reporter but in your whole life have you ever felt like this . No. Reporter ling and if you now, what would it be . Thank you holy father. You made me so happy. [ crying ] thank you. Reporter and new youre hoping for your miracle. Yes im hoping and i believe i believe. Reporter you seem very strong and very tough and we believe in you too. Thank you. Thank you. Reporter god bless you. God bless you too. Thank you. Wow. That gets you right here. He has had that effect on so many people here during the visit to the United States father, how does it feel when you see that . It gives us a great lift and a great hope because this is when reaching out to the holy father and believing and cig i believe in a miracleling and saying i believe in a miracle and thats what all this is all about. Its lifting ourselves out of who we are and what we do every day. And coming to a deeper this wonderful wonderful priest. The holy father. Lifting our spirits, there you see the pictures right now. Police vehicles moving about. The Extraordinary Security measures taken in manhattan. And there we see the fiat. Is that i dont know if i can tell that was a fiat or not. But the motorcade is up the fdr drive now and should be getting on to the Upper East Side shortly if not already there. It is going to get very loud here in just a few minutes. Yes. So during that time, we may just have to stop talking and just allow you to take in the crowd and hear the roar of the crowd. And just watch pope francis as he reacts with the people here. That face of his that warm smile. Its just really something and maybe it has something to do with you know, that latin mixed with italian heritage. They are cuddly people and they want to get next to you and they want to hug you, its in his blood. Well i dont know about be able to speak when the pope comes by. I think its just its one of these things that just wells up inside me. When i see him and i cant really cant really put a finger on it. Alice gain receiver pretty close to the location, but thats fifth and 60th. Alice anything . Reporter thats tight maurice, thats what were thinking that the moe tar cade is going to come right through here, its not going to be going very slowly. We understand hes in that fiat trying to come over to where the pope jeep is. We are on 60th street and fifth avenue here you know just about an hour ago this place was empty. Now the crowds have really gathered. There are about oh four, five feet deep and everyone has their cell phones up. And at the ready. People have some of their flags out here as well. You really couldnt pick any Better Weather for today. Its very comfortable out here. People are actually starting to get very quiet because we know he should be here shortly. Every so often the nypd drives by and people start getting quiet. Thinking maybe thats going to be him. But not yet. So anxiously awaiting the popes arrival here on 60th and fifth where hell make his way over to st. Patricks cathedral. But right now a lot of cell phones in the air and a lot of eyes looking over to 6 its street. Just 61st street. Thank you alice and one of the officers we understand it that when police make these sweeps there, actually for security purposes keeping an eye on exactly what the crowd looks like. They have got video files of everybody along the route. Just in case. Thats just the cay can never be too careful. Thats the way this has to unfold. But right now more Police Vehicles and no sign yet of the fiat on the Upper East Side. Not yet and the security obviously was a major factor in planning for this popes visit. The nypd was very blunt when they talked about leaving no and trying to think of every different scenario that they could go through. Even using past events where they could learn lessons. And not make you know the same mistakes over again. And you know its funny we talked to an officer who said its like new years eve here no new york city. Thats right but the truth is thats what they do in this town. Theyve done it many, many many times over. And as commissioner bratton put it, pope will have 6,000 angels guarding him for his trip here. Just in case. And theyre on the left. You can see some very familiar faces for new yorkers. Weve got de blasio, senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Cuomo will all conversing, i wonder what theyre talking about . I dont know but theyre part of the informal welcoming greeting committee and theyll be standing there on the front steps of st. Patricks cathedral to welcome the holy father along with Cardinal Dolan when he takes his first steps into the cathedral. Just a few minutes from now. I they this is one of the think that this is some of the lead cars vehicles that are leading the procession. Because weve been seeing a lot of suvs and fords. And we just heard alice say that was commissioner bratton that just drove by. And commissioner bratton has been very handson in planning the security for the popes visit and in fact we saw him here right in front of st. Patricks cathedral. And you can tell, he was assessing the space, he was looking up. He was looking down. He was looking around. This is a workday for him. Oh you Better Believe it. Matter of fact some of the officers we talked to, they said they cant wait until october i think 3rd it is . After everything leaves town. We have the u. N. General assembly and president next week and vladimir putin. We have a concert this saturday night. Weve got the tunnel to towers on sunday. On sunday. I mean, its like new years eve every day here in this town does. This is what our security does. So theyve done this. Theyre ready. Father how are you feeling right now . I know, im getting really, really excited about having his arrival. Having him here at st. Patricks cathedral. Especially where we are. Here right in front of st. Patricks cathedral this beautiful cathedral behind us, but its really a building and excitement. Heres the head of the whole church. And we are going to be in arms reach. You can tell your family you were going to be here . I did actually tell my family i was going to be here. So they were all excited with me and for me because its its our holy father. Well, hello to them. Thank you. Appreciate that. What do you think your emotioning will be . You know what . Knowing all my brothers and sisters, im one of eight, all my brothers and sisters are saying our brothers on tv, we cant believe that. No i mean when you see the holy father. I mean i think theres such great excitement about that. Because again, theres a connection of who we are as catholics and who he is as the leader of the church. All right. Getting the pope of the people a few blocks away from us is lou young. He has been standing by talking to people who came here from near and far. Lou . And now we would imagine that the poem came up pope made it 066 and there we see the fiat. To the left. Thats what weve been waiting to see. Now we can hear the crowd. Fifth avenue. Roar. They see it too. They know that he is so near. And in just moments, theyre going to be able to greet him as well. And see him for themselves. So you see people that will have lined up there that have lined thereupon on 6 up there on 66th street as well to catch a glimpse. A good six or eight deep on either side. Maybe ten. Father norton i know that the pope is a very humble man. You know, he im sure that hes taking this all in but do you believe that he feels how much hes loved really . You know do you think he realizes the depth of the love that people have for him . You know what . You you can see it. You can feel it in the people of america. Just welcoming him here. People from all over the world welcoming him here to this to our great city, to new york. Hes got to know hes loved here. He certainly knows he is more here to new york city. After this crowd and as you see, you know the crowds are really great. I mean theyre thick and theyre theyre full but theyre certainly not you know being rowdy. Theyre doing exactly what the police are asking them to do. Being very proper for new yorkers arent they . Under control. Very much under control. Dave carlin is along fifth and 66. Dave can you hear us and give us a sense of what you have going on there . Reporter we can hear you. Yes. Can you hear us with the crowd starting to get very excited about this. Oh there there he is. He is. The pope is on fifth avenue heading downtown right now. As he just passed in front of our camera there. And dave carlin and there you see what a show of nypd. And alice gainer should be a alice can you hear us . Hes coming right at you. Reporter i can hear you and the crowd is actually pretty quiet. The hum of the nypd motorcade is the only sound besides myself talking that we can hear right now. People have phones up and they are ready for this, weve been waiting for some time. Very small crowd earlier but thats grown in size considerably has the hour has gone on here, just waiting getting there. Getting there. Like joseph here, from rochester and his son clayton, how important for you to come by and share this with your son . Bell the pope is the world leader and very famous. And one of the biggest religion leaders. So i thought it would be very important to share this moment with the kids. Reporter we know that he loves the children and maybe stop by and bless clayton. Or hug him thatd be great. Or even just notice him thatd be great. Reporter thank you, dont miss this moment because weve been waiting for some time. People here, here we go. The motorcade is making its way through theres the fiat. [ cheering and applause ] transition ] it is a slow motorcade. He is connecting with the people. You can hear the people cheering. Are you close . Yes, we are right here. It was the smile on these two women caught my eye. Tell me what it was like . It is amazing to be here. Tell me what you saw . I saw just a little bit of him. What is the experience like . I think he i think he is a hero. I really do. I am catholic so it is a great experience. This goes down in history. Are you sure that was him in the window . I am pretty sure. Even if it wasnt it was pretty close. We were close. It was very exciting. The energy in the crowd was remarkable. Not a boisterous joy. This is real. This is a real. You have got to see how these people are react win. They are very enthusiastic. The number of cameras and devices that were raised up just to catch a glimpse it is something i have never seen before. Back to you. Thank you so much. The church bells are ringing now at st,. Patricks cathedral. They are allowed. They are special. No one here has moved. The crowd is still out here. I think they are still feeling the excitement and enjoying being out here. I have a young lady from argentina with me. Tell me what it was like. I am just proud to have this pope that everyone loves him. I never expected to see this today. I just came here from luck. How did you feel . I feel so excited. I made a i made a phone call to my mother and i could not stop crying. It is a huge emotion. What is it about the pope that you like best . He is a very friendly person. And he is humble, that is the most important thing. I have family in italy that tell me stories that he is very approachable and he does help people all of the time. The you have that connection with him as well. You have that as well. I am leaving tomorrow but i am very, very happy that i could see this. This is the perfect close of my trip. Thank you. I have spoken from people from argentina, north the world to see the pope today. Goes to sports stadiums that is what it is there is a wave coming our way. Here comes the pope. We can see him. He is a little more than a block away. There he is a waving to the people. This is a slow procession this is so exciting. Everyone is cheering. It is literally like a wave to the crowd. He is just a block away. We have stood up on our chairs because of the pope is here. This is so exciting. Diane, you are perched near us. How does it look for you . [cheering] lets go ahead and take this in. This needs no words. [cheering] there he is there he is he is like 50 yards away. Oh my goodness wow this is almost surreal. Wow the vehicle is pulling up in front of st. Patricks the pope is just over our shoulders. Now we have the vehicle pulling up alongside. The pope is getting off of the vehicle to be greeted by high School Students from two Catholic Schools in the city. One is a girl school in lower manhattan. The other is xavier high school. Off to the right we have construction workers who helped to refurbish st. Patricks cathedral. There is the senator and the mayor welcoming the pontiff new york. I am here with robert ritchie, he is in charge of the cathedral. Pope. We dont often hear the bells ring at st. Patricks cathedral like this. It is a very rare thing. This is a joyous spell that is being run. This is a joyous bell that is being run. It is a magical new york moment. Pope francis about to enter st. Patricks cathedral. I was wrong, he did not get out of the popemobile for the crowd. It has been a long trip. That is right. Those are the construction workers and their family and friends. Those are the people who did all of the work to refurbish st. Patricks cathedral. What a moment here on fifth avenue. You have to wonder, what does this humble man think of all of this majesty . New york citys fifth avenue. I cant imagine what is going on in his mind. He certainly made up sometime on his journey over here because now we are back on schedule. When he enters st. Patricks cathedral he will go down the aisle and i am sure take in the beauty of what he is going to see. Look at the cardinal, look how proud he is. This is his archdiocese. He is the welcoming cardinal. What he had done to the cathedral, it is so beautiful. He is so proud that he gets to share it now with the holy father. He is being greeted by the other arch bishops. Those are all of the assistance to the cardinal. They are now greeting the holy [music] they are showing him the beauty of the cathedral. He is a sprinkling the holy water. We should remind you that they are here for vespers. They prayed three pray three times a day. That is what you agree to do when you become a priest. In this case they are doing it together. For us you see this big heart, this amazing crowd, yet, it is a very intimate moment for us as priest to play with the head of the church. Look at st. Patricks cathedral. The last time i was they are a few months ago it was still under construction. Look at it now. It is beautiful. You cannot help but feel the pride and the excitement of just walking down that aisle in st. Patricks cathedral because of the beauty of that church. Next he will proceed to the aisle salt of the sanctuary and he will play at the Saint Elizabeths altar. East to the sacristy. The choir sounds beautiful. They sound heavenly. Here we see a little girl brought blessing. [music] have you ever been to a service like this . Not like this. This is really amazing. It is often a little bit less and attended as it is right now. It is supposed to be introspective and prayerful and in end of the day kind of thing. Soon as he gets in here. [overlapping speakers] what must he be thinking . I cant even imagine. I think right now he is very focused on prayer. He is trying to move this group into prayer mode. This is right behind the main that is correct. This part of the church is very special for me because i had both of my boys baptized right here at st. Patricks cathedral. I cant tell you what this means to me. Watching him you can see that he is in his own little space right now. What it is so beautiful what is so beautiful is with all that is going on around him at this moment he is able to focus his attention on his prayer. On his time with the lord. That is what is most important to him. He will go to the sacristy. It is a special event i guess he will be wearing white. For those who are not catholic. That means any time we are not celebrating a a particular time of the year. Christmas, addend, easter, lent, those are special times of the year. When we do ordinary times we are not doing one of those special moments. So, with of the lord there is next never asked so, with the lord there is a nothing ever ordinary but it is is not that special time of the year. It is the proclamation of the kingdom for every person who follows christ. You talk about this humble man, i was at the vatican when he was first selected as pope when he came to the window and the crowd was there, it is a similar field right now. The thing i will never forget is he said, pray for me. He asked the people to pray for him. He did that again today. He did that in washington. He said, pray for me. Then he proceeded to say, if you dont believe, if you are not able to pray, send me some good thoughts. Hallmark of his. He does not exclude anyone. He is always welcoming everyone into the moment that he is in. He is such a humble a humble man that he asks always for people to pray for him. It is something that is amazing. The head of the church asking people to pray for him. As a pastor i asked that often of my people. You should always be asking them, pray for me, i am praying for you, you can pray for me please. Speaking from a laypersons point of view it makes you more relatable and it makes you more relatable. Exactly, that we can never forget. The church is made up of human beings. Sometimes we falter teaching us we all need prayer, we all need the support of one another, we all need the encouragement of one another. He is a great example of priesthood, of being a great pastor. It is striking how quickly he went from waving to the crowds to the serenity of the moment understanding it is time for prayer. It is time to get solemn. You said he was going to change and he has a changed. He has the miter on. The also has a capon, it is green. So, again, ordinary times. Underneath front there. Everyone is able to pray. We are bound by a promise that everyone is welcome. There are a lot of seminarians around him from st. Josephs seminary in yonkers. We also understand that he is during this prayer. That is unusual. It is unusual. Obviously, [inaudible] but, here in this formal moment, this solemn evening prayer, it would be appropriate for the one who is leading the prayer to speak a few words of encouragement, words of prayer, so this is very typical of a more formal reciting of the offer. The homily is a portion of the mass where the pope will speak from notes but in order to basically connect with the people to give them a message, something to take home, something to touch them. That is correct. A priest speaks to his people that is referred to as a sermon or a homily. It does not always have to be in mass. We are expecting him to speak in [music] i cried to the lord and you i will pay to you forever. I cry to you lord and you hear me. I will pray to you forever. I will [music] in this you rejoice although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials so that the genuineness of your faith more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire may prove to be for praise, glory and honor at the revelation of jesus christ. Although you have not seen him you love him. Even though you do not see him now yet, believe in him. You rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy as you attain the goal of your soul. [speaking spanish] i have two feelings for my islamic brothers. [speaking spanish] first, i recognize that today is [speaking spanish] i wish i could make this warmer, this greeting to be warmer. [speaking spanish] but, i am close and my sentiments are close. [speaking spanish] i am thinking of them, i am close to them in the face of tragedy. [speaking spanish] the tragedy that they suffered in mecca. [speaking spanish] at this moment i gave assurances of my prayers. I unite myself with you. [speaking spanish] a prayer to almighty god, all merciful. [speaking spanish] this beautiful cathedral of st. Patricks, built over many years to the sacrifices of many men and women is a symbol of the work of generations of american priests and religious and lay faithful who helped build up the church in the United States. [speaking spanish] many priests and religious in this country that have not only, in education, but in other areas have had a central role assisting parents in handing down to their children the food that nourishes them for life. Many did so at the cost of extraordinary sacrifice. With heroic charity. I think, for example, of Saint Elizabeth who founded first three Catholic School for girls in the United States or in st. John neumann, the founder of the first system of celtic education in this country. The founder of the first system of Catholic Education in this country. This evening i have come to join you in prayer. That our locations that our vocations, as priests, will continue to build up in this country. I know that as the presbytery it in the midst of gods people you recently have suffered greatly in the not distant past by having to bear the shame of some of your brothers. Brothers who have harmed and scandalized the church. In the most vulnerable of their members. In the words of the book of revelation i know well that you have come forth from the great tribulation and i accompany you at i think god for your faithful service to his people doing so in the hope of helping you to preserve on the path of fidelity to jesus christ. I would like to offer two brief reflections. The first concern is of the spirit of gratitude. The joy of men and women who love god attracts others to him. Priests and religious are called to find and radiate lasting joy springs from a grateful heart. Truly, we have received much, so many graces, so many blessings. And in this we rejoice. It will do us good to think back on our lives with the grace of remembrance. Remembrance of when we were first called, remembrance of the road traveled. Remembrance of graces received. Above all, remembrance of our encounter with jesus christ so often along the way. Remembrance of the amazement which has awakened in our hearts. Sisters, brothers, priests and religious to seek the grace of remembrance so as to grow in the spirit of gratitude perhaps we need to ask ourselves, are we capable of counting our blessings . Have i forgotten them . Secondary, is the spirit of hard work. A grateful heart is spontaneously impelled to serve the lord and to find to our work. When we realize how much god has given us we learned that a life of sacrifice, of working for him and for others becomes ape bleached way, a privileged way of responding to his great love. Yet, if we are honest, we must recognize how easily this, this spirit of generous selfsacrifice can be dampened. There are a couple of ways that this can happen. Examples of the spiritual worldliness which weakens our commitment to serve as dedicated to men and women. It diminishes the wonder of our First Encounter with christ. We can get caught up in measuring the value of our works by the standards of efficiency, good management, and outward success. Not that these things are not important of course, but we have been entrusted with a great responsibility. This is why gods of people rightly expect accountability from us but the true worth of our apostolate is measured by the value it has in gods eyes. To see and evaluate things from gods perspective, calls for constant, constant conversion in the first days and years of our vocation and need i say, it demands great humility. The cross shows us a different way of measuring success. Hours is to plant the seeds. God sees to the fruits. Fruits of our labors. If, at times, our efforts and works seem to fail and not produce fruit we need to remember that we are followers of jesus christ. His failure. The failure of the cross. Another danger, another danger emerges when we become jealous of our free time. When we think that worldly comforts help us to serve better. The problem with this way of reasoning is that it can
