Thanks for having me today. A great off season. The National Champions big east villanova wildcats. Fantastic job by the wildcats. Considering how important this is for the conference, three years ago there was a mass exodus at this conference. How much did this legitimize the conference . It makes the conference separate above the conference because now we have a National Championship. The branding that brings, the attention it will bring to our conference next year, in subsequent years, it cant be measured. I dont think theres anyone that would have imagined that only three years into this restructured conference we would have a National Level program like villanova that actually wins the National Championship. But you have been successful. Over the past three years, your rpi is a top five, always having teams in the top five, some of the best coaches in america in the big east as well. But does the perception finally match the reality . The reality is this has been a successful conference. That has been the reality. We are a basketballcentered conference, a very successful basketballcentered conference. Arguably the best basketball conference in the country. Mainly been due to the fact that in the governance structure amongst the ncaa, you have these football conferences, the five football conferences that have taken on a leadership role in terms of what everybody thinks are the leaders. They forget in basketball the big east is as great as any conference in america when it comes to playing the game of basketball. Oh, yeah. The conference really cashed in as well. In the tournament, you won 12 tournament games and you cashed in with 19 million. Its like you said. You were facing against the power five conferences. If this were a poker table, if you were against the power five conferences, do you feel like you stole the pot from everybody . We certainly surprised them, thats for sure. Again, when you have a program like villanova thats built the way they are, the way they structure their program, quite frankly the way all the big east teams structure their stability and sustainability, this is bound to happen. I dont think we thought it would happen within three years. The football conference, maybe of them get tagged with having one and done players or they are able to recruit on a level that perhaps some of us that arent in the autonomy football five are able to recruit. Schools like involve are proving them wrong. They really ray. Do you want a school like villanova to be the bread winner of the conference or do you like it if xavier or butler or creighton has a good year year after year . Do you want someone to carry the reigns . Its an interesting question. Our coaches would tell you anyone in our league is capable of beating any other team. Take this year by way of example. I thought going into the tournament that perhaps xavier was the deepest team in the league, perhaps the most talented team and playing some same level, if not better than villanova. But as you know in the oneand done format, you win or go home, its all a matter of playing the best basketball at the right time and, you know, winning six games and villanova fortunately was able to do that. Big east tournament will still remain at the garden once again. Next year, the acc tournament will be at the barclays center. Is this one of those things where this will actually help your tournament because everybodys going to be thinking College Basketball at that time, or is it taking away from the people attending the big east . I think having them here only enhances the game of basketball, enhances new york city and reaffirms the fact that new york is the mecca of basketball. Everyone knows that. Thats why they are coming here. But i like the quote that Kevin Willard had about the fact that the big 10 was excuse me, acc is coming to new york. He said, you know, weve been here for a long time. Well continue to be here. They are going to come in for a pizza and then they are going to leave. Right. [ laughter ] new york city is still the big east tournament. We feel strongly about that. I dont know how much crossover in terms of fans there will actually be. The big east tournament is such a great tradition, something that fans plan for and look forward to, and listen, if we have a big east tournament or the kind of matchups we had this season, next season, we dont really concern ourselves with any other conference coming in. You mentioned football a couple of times. Of course the big east does not have football right now, but it seems like College Athletics are being, i guess, led by the College Football programs. But you were able to have that success without any football programs there. Was the demise of the big east a little bit of a rush to judgment by everybody out there . Did it almost kind of leave everyone in the conference with a bit of a chip on your shoulders because of that . Yeah, i think youre right. I think it was a rush to judgment. Certainly the football schools because of football and the Financial Impact that it has there. But sometimes your strength can also be your weakness. The fact that we dont have football is actually a strength for us. You know, just given there arent as many scholarships that we need to deal with, our revenue base is based upon having successful basketball programs, and were a league that only focuses in on basketball. And thats success. Were able to do that and i think thats a real positive. Listen. Things come down to not only financial in college sports, but also from a recruiting standpoint and were fortunate to be in the northeastern part of the united states. And there are a lot of young men, young women out there, that being on a football campus isnt necessarily the most important thing to them. Theres still something to be said for an athlete coming to a basketballcentric school and being, quote, unquote, the big person on campus. Thats a strength of ours. No, i dont think we do. They left the conference. They are happy. Except for syracuse. They wish they are back. But i think being a basketball centric conference is a big advantage. I want to quickly talk about the nba. You clearly still have ties to the nba. Youre a big fan, former head coach of the new york knicks. This is a critical off season for not only new york, but phil jackson. He is getting blasted the last couple of years. The record is 49115 under him, but he also drafted christophe porzingis, plus 15 in wins from the year before. Is it fair or unfair the criticism phil jackson is getting right now . Personally, i think its grossly unfair. Really . Given where the knicks were when he came in and the fact theres been some positive progression from year one to year two, and now theres an opportunity for year three to go out, experience free agency, basketball team, i think is a real positive. Listen, youre in new york. Youve got so many media markets and so many mediums. Thats the thing, there are so many people who take this personally because the knicks basketball in new york. To see them down like this, upset. And i get it. My veins too. Well. At the same time, i understand this is a process. Sometimes processes are painful. They are going to be a lot better next year. If they are not winning 30, 31 games, maybe they get in the 40s and are playing meaningful games in the month of march and april, which would be a real positive step. Reports say Patrick Ewing will be offered the head coaching job of the sacramento kings. Is it about time for ewing to get a head coaching position . He deserves it.
