The community raised 60,000 scholars to help the single mother who says 60,000 to help the single mother who said she was dying of cancer. But now theyre questioning whether any of it was true. Brian conybeare has the story new at 11 00. Cancer patient in the pictures she posted. But when she said she had 18 months to live, many opened their hearts and wallets. Immediately within 24 hours from my posts, we raised about 12,000. Reporter and that was only the beginning. One gofundme page raised more than 25,000. Another, more than 10,000. But cbs2 has confirmed police are investigating whether it was all a ripoff. A Police Source says after getting a tip, they asked diocarde for medical records to prove her cancer claims. Instead of turning them over, she closed her Indian Restaurant and moved to florida last month. Its horrible. People are taking advantage of the kindness of their neighbors. You cant trust unfortunately. Reporter her sons went to entire Community Rallied to help for medical bills, even an adoptive dog to comfort her. They even held a fundraising spaghetti dinner at the fire house last november raiding another 16,000 for the family. Raising another 16,000 for the exam family. Its a good community. Reporter for the family. Its a good community. Its disappointing somebody would do that. Reporter if this proves to be a 60,000 scam, people may not be as generous next time. It would make it much harder to raise funds in the future for other people who desperately need help. Reporter investigators believe the fire was sparked by an electrical problem. Easter morning turned tragic whether an elderly man queens. The 88yearolds elmhurst home is now a charred mess. The fire started around 4 30 this morning. Firefighters say the retired man died. The nypd says when officers arrived at the store on west 179th just before 2 00 this morning, the knife was still stuck in the victims back. He was rushed to harlem hospital in critical condition. No arrests have been made. Police are currently reviewing Surveillance Video in hopes of tracking down a suspect. More violence is consuming belgium in the bake of the recent terror attacks. Today a memorial for the victims in brussels turned into a nasty scene when riot Police Clashed with hundreds of protestors. Carried out 14 raids with more arrests. A 92yearold womans wedding ring is back in her hands. Reporter holding his mothers wedding ring is bittersweet for doug tuig. Hes relieved to have her ring back, though, after her death after it disappeared after she was hospitalized. I want to thank everyone involved for, you know, look into this matter and finding the ring. I really appreciate it. Reporter 92yearold tuig was treated with pneumonia when her cherished wedding band, a gift from her husband 60 years ago, vanished from her finger in the middle of the night. Her family filed a police report. Sunday and Police Called them two days later saying the hospital found the ring. And the next day, they recovered the ring. Reporter the day after the story the day after the story, yes. They said the ring was behind the bed in a hard to reach location which i thats my question that i have for them. How did it get there . Reporter tuig says he tried but couldnt remove the ring when his mom was first hospitalized. It did not fall off. Theres absolutely no way the ring could have fell off. Reporter theyre happy the ring was returned but theyre disappointed the hospital never reached out to them personally to explain how it was found. I dont want this to happen to anybody else. And somebody has to be responsible for removing this ring. Reporter tuig says his mother never removed the ring for as long as she had it. Hes hoping she can rest in peace knowing its found.
