Nearly one 3rd of the world's traded oil passes through every day maybe come a new flashpoint after a top Iranian Navy general says that the country has taken full control of the Strait of Hormuz the head of the navy of Iran's Revolutionary Guards the general. Said that Iran had full control of both the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz that leads into it that could be a problem the White House is taking a look at whether the government should regulate Google president Donald Trump's top economic adviser said that on Tuesday hours after the president targeted the platform units let's check in with the expert on the Internet Lauren Weinstein who by the way will be our one our guest Thursday to talk about a lot of these issues and for full disclaimer. Lauren you have been a consultant to Google right right some years ago but of course my opinions are my own and everything I'm saying is completely public information now so what's going on here that's the thing about this is I can assure you from my own experience that Google bends over backwards to avoid political bias in their search results they want to provide the best results of the most accurate and most relevant information to users the thing about this is that not all information is is clear is created equal there are sites that deal with hate speech and ridiculous conspiracy theories and regardless of their political orientation whether it's on the left or the right they're useful for spreading that kind of stuff but they're not going to be useful to most people were dismissed or to society at large now if those sites even small sites published accurate reputable truthful verifiable information and didn't spin and hate speech or targeted attacks and things like that they could rate very very highly in Google search results but that's not what they are so that's not what happens. The other thing about this is the president from called me and asked me for advice about his own search results which admittedly doesn't seem like all that likely something will happen I tell him that a big part of his search problem is the way he behaves himself on social media if he stayed on message about what he feels are his real accomplishments there'd be focus on those but what seems to happen and we've seen that so many times maybe he'll send out one tweet about a great thing that's happening in the economy that he can take take credit for but an hour later or maybe it was am the next morning there's a barrage of tweets from about some easily debunked conspiracy theory that he just saw somewhere and those suck all the oxygen out of everything so it just doesn't seem like he really has the social media self-discipline to stay focused if he stayed on point discussing the good stuff that he's done then the news cycles and search results would tend to do much the same very specific stuff this is really his own behavior on social media and on public statements that the control of this so it's largely already in his hands Lauren I look forward to our hours Thursday night Ok and he'll take phone calls from you as well Americans consumer confidence rose in August to the highest level in nearly 18 years as their assessment of current conditions improve further and their expectations about the future rebounded Meanwhile though for the 1st time in 2 years the Seattle area no longer leads the nation in home price increases the monthly Case Shiller Home Price Index released Tuesday shows that Las Vegas has overtaken Seattle as the nation's hottest housing market and despite a strong economy about 40 percent of American families are struggling to meet at least one of their basic needs including pain for food health care housing or utilities registered investment advisor Michel Michel block with us this should feels good but what do you think. There's a lot there out for. 1st off let me congratulate your speaker Laurent I am 100 percent in agreement with them and I would tell everyone to tune in to that show he has that exactly nailed at least in my viewpoint I side with them. Interesting stories today 1st on the stock market rally huge yesterday. And it was on news that trump signed a deal with Mexico this goes back to something that I've discussed with you many times and you have to remember I am a big trade advocate I'm in favor of trade deals trying to threaten to walk away from the threat and the top walk away from NAFTA I don't think the deal actually read it this way the deal that he just worked out with Mexico is probably no better than the deal we already had but the stock market rallied because we had a deal trade does not look like it's going to collapse here now I'm hoping that we can get this together you know with Canada and improve upon that that's what we need to do the stock market put its affirmation on what we've been discussing here about trade in terms of people falling behind on in terms of their pay George that's a really sad story here I wrote about that on my blog today the median person is falling further and further behind I am seriously concerned about the middle class George just have to keep watching this all right mission you'll be doing it for us thank you so much a California man is facing 10 felony counts for sneaking out on dates just before the waiter brings the check unbelievable a 45 year old man set up to. But these are interesting times aren't. That understatement but yes quite interesting all over the world all over the place let me ask you one military question before we get into your work of course and that is if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz and stops oil from flowing we're going to have a war there aren't we. That they're not they're not going to do that Joy they're crazy. If they do you gotta understand that the internal situation in Iran is so bad that the of course the surest way to detract you noted to deflect your your people's attention on how bad they have it is to focus it somewhere else for just they're making noise it's rhetoric they don't anymore control the Straits of Hormuz and they do the moon the 'd u.s. Navy's all over the place we have air bases all over that area we could get all the rest of our military over their insurance if we had to Iran's not crazy getting what chicken is $6.00 a pound their economy shot they don't they don't have the muscle to go the distance and they wouldn't do it anyway so I wouldn't worry about it you have been in quite a prolific writer how did the career and writing start. Well I was I was going back and forth to the Middle East as a. Powerhouse in mercenary and war private military contractor exactly why I got hurt again in Baghdad and I was coming back and I thought you know I think I should write down some of what I've done for my the brightest had a brother and a baby boy congrats I well know at the time all Kay and I and I and I thought I should write down some of these stories so that you know you might know a little bit about me in case the luck in my bag runs out yeah and so that's that was the impetus behind the 1st broke and then one followed another and here I am well and he continues to grow and you've got a great publisher there with Harper Collins to go wrong with Harper Collins for sure not at all good people indeed let's talk about a little bit later on in the show I'm going to play a little clip of our Chuck Yeager but let's talk about this I mean you were a pilot the feat that they did back in 1947 must have been remarkable scary at the same time I mean were they pushing it to the point where they could have all died with what they were doing oh sure I mean the yeah and maybe that every single one of them knew that and they they did it anyway in fact when I when I wrote chasing the dream and I dedicated it to 'd 114 test pilots that I knew about that died and these were all guys that had. You know they had survived World War 2 they'd survive combat they were doing this because they believed in it and they liked the challenge certainly but there were risks and they still did it because it was important Did any of these guys become astronauts or were they way before that well it was was before the space program this is expressed from other things that all sort of you know happened simultaneously if you're I'm sure you're aware of synchronicity and how that were amazing that all these things sort of happened in parallel then and that was sort of the jumping off stage for the state program but that came later that came later chasing the demon Tell me about the title. The demon is the demon is in anything and it doesn't it if I wrote it from the context you know the flying world but it's actually applies to anybody to chase a demon is to is to go after whatever it is is most elusive in your life in your career or whatever it is it's going to drive you to excel whatever challenge you want to overcome that's the demon and in this case choosing the demon pilots got to you that term you know to to describe the next hardest thing that is out there to do the next challenge and for these guys it was to exceed Mach one and go supersonic the speed of sound is exactly how fast is it it's like. What it's well it depends on temperature. Changes depending on temperature to put your varies with altitude the book answer is 741 miles an hour at 32 degrees but again as you grow up in altitude the temperature decreases the speed you know the speed will change what creates that fact when they hit that sound barrier that's a shockwave. And it propagates in the direction that the aircraft is traveling which is why you know you could be you could be immediately below beneath an aircraft you know the top high going supersonic and maybe not hear a thing because the sound wave is going to go off in the direction that the that the plane is flying was it in obsession for us at that time to try to pass the sound barrier. It was it was the next big challenge and it was very important strategically because you know you're a caller were to it just ended 945 we were the only country. They had atomic weapons and everybody was anxious to avoid a 3rd world war a lot of these you know these guys that are grown up in the wake of the 1st World War there were plenty of people around that remember both of them the last thing anybody wanted was a 3rd world war and the silly Union once the World War 2 was over you know rapidly emerged as the next big threat. That we were going to face for the next few decades so everybody wanted to avoid another world war and they saw the ability to deliver a soup to deliver an atomic weapon that you know had high speeds as a very real deterrent and they were right when the pilot goes through the sound barrier at the speed of sound they hear the bullets while knowing there's no black black edges that close in around here like they show in the movie it doesn't play. They don't hear it why don't they hear now well the. Essentially traveling with it besides it's really a nonevent I've been Supersonics out of the times albeit in a you know on a and a vastly superior aircraft to what these guys were having to deal with but even Chuck Yeager and is in is after action report is test report you know said How anti-climactic it was I think he said it was like a poke through Jell-O. That was not the big challenge yours a big challenge was the trend sonic region which is immediately before any immediately after Mach one and that's where aerodynamics had not caught up with engines with technology with our understanding and so that's what was killing guys a trance on a crate and not going supersonic and we really didn't know then what was going to happen when they got into that position and we know that's one thing you will always have to give these guys credit for every you know every last one of them no . Nobody knew they didn't have modeling and simulation like we do now they couldn't predict a lot of this very smart guys with slide rules were working all this out you know all the art and Haneke sat on pieces of paper and they knew all of this and they still did it anyway so we owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude and it's just remarkable what we were able to accomplish how many men were involved in the end you know I normally would have said men and women but I don't think we had any women in the program at that point but then how many men did we have on the program well I mean it depends a degree and had a us answer but it depends. There was a flight test division out it right field in Ohio and it was divided into different sections there was guys it tested bombers guys tested fighters etc and and a good portion of this was moved out to Miraki Air Force or miracle Army Air Corps base which became Edwards Air Force Base out in California intially. And so you know there was there were a fair amount of people that you know serviced airplanes provided you know other other services for people the actual number of pilots those was actually you know quite small they had a you know they had several pilots for each type of airplane they were testing and the x one was not the only program being tested at the time which is where some of the conflict in this book comes comes into play for we talk about the expiated 6 and George Welch I'm going to play a little clip of Chuck Egger from October 14th 947 when he was in the Bell x. One. And when you know it's over 947 I feel I've got other tests that are in California history is made by this aircraft the excess one and the 5 f m drowse. Airplanes and 5 about to be the 1st ever to reply back given the speed of sound in level flight. Of the $29.00 will take the x f one a lot and once are at an altitude of about 35000 feet. The s f one is not a military aircraft a flying Research Laboratory designed to test the effects of supersonic flight upon air flight it is powered by 4 rocket engines. Its place emphasis is less than $5000.00 pounds but it carries a 1000 pounds of fuel. Big One and I have done And therefore it. Prediction not so I've got Kevin the merit of Lir capital with me today so let's ask him Kevin how are you going to orange thanks yeah in 2002 silver was $4.00 an ounce near its cost of production we predicted silver would rise to $30.00 an ounce within 10 years people thought we were absolutely not 9 years later silver hit $48.00 an ounce we weren't so nuts anymore No not at all so what made you so sure are that the price was going to make such a big move well at the time silver was trading near its production cost and industrial demand was absolutely skyrocketing and why do you think $100.00 silver is possible now solar in fact China alone is expected to need an amount of silver equal to half of the global annual mining production that's just China the whole world is moving to China just recently California is now requiring all new homes to have solar panels there's just not enough silver supply that kind of demand so we're going to see a shortage given Well I can say is that some smart people like j.p. Morgan has accumulated the largest private stockpile of physical silver in the world more than $130000000.00 ounces that's over $2000000000.00 worth of silver I'm sure they're not doing it because expect the price to go down the hall I guess not but could silver reach higher than $100.00 an ounce if you adjust it for inflation George Silver would have to be about $130.00 an ounce to reach its all time high so we thinks $100.00 is well within reach when could that happen over the next 7 to 10 years but we believe most of the gains will happen over the next 3 to 5 years just hard to ignore the potential in silver right now Kevin our listeners are passionate The have anything that you can send out to listen there so they can find out more about a $100.00 silver we do George when I make a special offer for you it's our latest sky high silver report listeners can learn more about China's massive move into solar and why experts say silver rising $200.00 an ounce the report is a 20 dollar value but it's free for your listeners by calling 18029970. 401-802-9974 extension 00 folks this last week even Forbes came out with a report saying China was leading the way with solar and that in 2018 global investments into solar will outstrip coal gas in nuclear combined Let's get liers sky high silver report it's a fascinating report and don't miss out on the solar revolution call now to get your copy it's a $20.00 value free with no obligation call 180-299-7400 that's 180-299-7400. And welcome back Dan Hampton with us his latest book is called Chasing the demon Chuck Yeager still alive and kicking 95 years old Dan. Yet the amazing and the so the fact that his boss can just from his store very much with us in fact to help me write this book didn't Jaeger when he was doing this incredible flight in 1947 almost crash he lost control of it. He did a couple of things that. A professional test pilot would raise their eyebrows over the 1st time he was dropped from the x. One was a glide flight there was no engine no engine stalls and he did to a Ronald which is you know you see a role the airplane something a fatter pilot would do and that's fine but that's not what you're supposed to do on a test flight and then I did the same thing on one of his powered flights and the xo the s.l.r. Rocket motors had a cut off and I'm so if you went to negative G.'s it would just it would they would cut out and that's exactly what happened to him so yeah he did a couple of things like that that were worth 2 or 2 Sterling what happened with his bell x. One plane after the record was done did we put that into production What Did We Do With It never know it was never meant to be in production which was well I can show stern and some of the other guys didn't really want anything to do with it very very new most people knew. That you know Mach one was just a number it was really late as I said earlier kind of a nonevent the real future of the Air Force of jet fighters and any of our services were was the jet not not any kind of rocket powered. Interceptor which is what this was it was a test vehicle it was and was never meant to go into production How fast were jets go now oh well you know fighter jets you know are openly acknowledged to be about Mach 2 and a half but we have had since the sixty's we had airplanes that exceed Mach 5 wow with our $71.00 another Kelly Johnsons and. Magnificent designs went went several times that certain that there was no official acknowledgment of that the but it did but yeah we retain the go to Mach 5 in terms of fighter jets appear your day to day where do we rank I mean are we way ahead of the Russians and Chinese and everybody else yeah you guys everybody can sleep well at night you know there's there's always a lot of hype over the the next Russian or Chinese design that comes out and you have to remember that just because these things look like our aircraft they're not I've flown I've flown some Russian airplanes before and they're they're basically junk the problem with them is that there's 10 to 15 tower there used to be 10 to 15 of them for every one of us had any any needed of the airplanes were as good as as our guys you know and I'm not being cocky it's just the truth that their pilots are nowhere near where ours are be they you know Navy or Air Force or Marine pilots and how sophisticated were the jets I mean I used those t.v. Movies on a Hollywood where when a little missile is you know locked on a Jet all of a sudden the pilot sees it in his eye cockpit to do well you know evasive measures can these jets really detect that our jets you mean yeah oh yeah sure yeah we've got all sorts of radar warning and other sorts of warning sensors that can detect all this stuff and we've got all kinds of countermeasures aboard they can they can deceive most of that was my job in fact for most of my career I was a while weasel so I was supposed to go out and kill surface to air missiles and anti-aircraft guns once we passed the speed of sound then what did we do well when it was who could get to Mach 1.5 And who could get to Mach 2 you know it's it's it's it's the demon cat you know running away a little bit farther out into the scenarios as they say and so that became the next challenge and then of course after that it was to get into space does Jaeger talk to the media anymore. Not much I don't know and again this is just me talking but I don't think he talks to the anybody including a lot of his old friends I don't know if it's a health issue or his 2nd marriage or whatever it is but he's he's sort of out of the out of the picture yes well it is 95 yeah at the same time but the great American did his thing no doubt a very brilliant man just like all of us of them yeah yeah absolutely and how many . How many women joined at the these kind of programs later on. You mean the test program to end you know because we still have test pilots right Oh absolutely absolutely you know there's a there's a fair number of female pilots and you know in the programs now and not just the Air Force program but the Navy's got an excellent program out of Pax River the Texan river I couldn't give you an exact number but the field opened up you know and as it should and if you're qualified to do it you've got the education and experience and the hands then you should do it and that's what they do well it's amazing work and of course what you've done has been amazing as well do you still fly or do you just I don't know I said for fun I had on do anything as a as drastic as I used to do but that's Ok because like I said earlier I had all the luck in my bags pretty much gone I try to pay myself most of the pilots who fly for commercial airlines where they former military in the beginning yeah almost almost exclusively especially coming out of World War 2 in the advent of the of the jet age you know that there were civilian programs that but you know you had a military that was drawing down an excess of pilots and all the sudden for the an industry that was expanding and needed pilots so it drew from the services just like they still do today my 17 year old granddaughter Dan wants to be a pilot and she's taking lessons by hand and she just loves it I threw teller stick with it I got my license you can get a license back then at 16 and that's when I started to fly and there's a there's a height requirement to the isn't there a military Yeah it's a fitting height requirement so it's it's it's it's you know how how do your measurements from from your spine basically to the top of your head. When you're sitting down that's more important than anything else I told her that she small I said I said Kyra you better you better check. Height requirements well so find somebody that anybody that squared away would find something to do what do you think of the jets these days the commercial jets specifically Dan I fly a lot I mean a heck of a lot I'm in the 730 seven's 757 I mean this some of these planes are amazing Are they well yeah and you have to remember that that the technology for these you know the modern airliners all evolved. For military technology in some form or another I mean just you know take that little look out the window next time you're flying and look at the wings you know wings are swept back because that's one of the things that helped us get through mach one was realizing that sweeping the wings back. Aided the aerodynamics and could actually enable an aircraft to Main can maintain control through the trance on accretion and go supersonic Dan do you think some of the u.f.o. Reports that we've gotten over the years might be jets that we hadn't really didn't disclose what we had definitely had been reported as a u.f.o. Did you ever see anything strange after the all the time and you know I really take seriously the reports that come from pilots especially military pilots you know they've they've they see some strange things and who really knows right I think it's incredibly arrogant to look up at the night sky and all the stars and think that we're the only thing out there looking you know looking out there is other there are other things too like I don't know a lot of them are mistakes and some of it's you know some of the sightings are are crackpots but I've seen enough strange things to believe that they are real what would be just strangest that you recollect that you saw. I would have to say one night this is nowhere near any sort of test range it was out over the Atlantic in the middle of the night. Something pan we were we were probably 3035000 c. Transiting across the ocean and something flew over the very very fast and it was sort of an odd green color and it stayed green for maybe 10 seconds and then disappeared and it wasn't coming down so it wasn't a meteor and there was nothing there was nothing out there it come up from it was something going across the sky I had no idea what it was how close you think it was to you oh was it was 1520000 feet above above you wow. You know it's always seems strange. You gotta have an open open mind when it comes to loosely you will. Respect you I wrote a book on the missing m h 370 with Richard Belzer you've got your old thoughts about that incredible story with a plane that has just vanished What's your take on that well I did. I did I did quite a few news clips of that you know when it happened Fox and c.n.n. And some others as an aviation expert and I put myself in the position of somebody who was trying to lose that are planned and what I would have done was exactly what it looks like this guy did the pilot did it yeah yeah hey it was as far as I know there were no other pilots aboard it if there had been how would they have gotten into the cockpit so it had to be one of the 2 guys it was in their suicide mission I don't know you know it's hard to tell what makes somebody blow right he never really know another person I will tell you that when when an airliner gets up to cruising altitude one of the guys in the front will usually go back and use the bathroom so there's one guy in the cockpit and whoever did this would have known that and I got to do is lock the door because these days nobody is getting through the door into a cockpit and once you're alone up there you can do anything you want I would have to pressurize the back of the airplane because the cockpits on a separate oxygen and if you depressurize the back everybody is going to eventually go to sleep and then die and then you know you've got nobody to worry about but yourself space. You know remember remember it was knew that airplane intimately because they disable everything that could track that airplane and then I think he turned and proceeded south into the Indian Ocean which is exactly where I go to lose an airplane because there's nothing out there we don't even track most of it on satellite is he ran out of fuel or he plunged it I think he kept flying deeper deeper into the Indian Ocean until he ran out of fuel and then went down I think that was intent for whatever reason that the sea floor out there is 2025000 feet deep and I think he knew that by the time anybody got out there to look for him that black box would have would have run the batteries would have died or would have been so deep that it would have been crushed under the pressure and nobody would find him and we still had a Dan in our days in the school we all wanted to be astronauts as we grew up during a space program what about you. You know I my my dad worked on the space program for a little while after he quit flying for the military and like like he said we were all fascinated with it because it was it was an extra thing right I mean that was that was the next frontier that was it that was that was that was chasing the dream and for that generation was to get into space so yeah I wanted to as well you had the right stuff why did you do it well in my field you get to the point where if you want to you know you can you can take to go or try to try to get into the NASA side of things I with the other route went through the Top Gun school the Fighter Weapons School and I you know I wanted to stay in the tactical end of things I wanted to to be at the front of whatever was coming I didn't I you know I didn't really want to be. An astronaut at that point I wanted to be a tactician and and a fighter pilot which is what I did and your take now on Afghanistan and Iraq president's thinking about privatizing the Afghan war is just we're still. There were still I would say and again I'm not speaking for anybody but myself but I witnessed that one American drop of blood for Afghanistan no and we're still there yeah it's it's absurd Iraq Iraq could have been so much different you know I was there in 91 when it started I was there in 2012 when the last when the last guys pulled out and I saw all the iterations of it in between Paul Brenner's you know idiotic plan for the you know post war time in Iraq all of that was done so badly and now I'm not sure what the answer is but I I I don't know how we extricate ourselves from that in Afghanistan would be easy though I would just pull out I retired in 1012 months before Desert Storm Time Inc and my my entire unit we were a public affairs officer stand so I didn't see any action. My entire unit got called up to Saudi Arabia and worked with General Schwarzkopf and they were they were doing all his public relations in Saudi Arabia when he was there and they all came back with the ribbons and everything else. He had for for staying in Saudi Arabia and watching the planes fly over Yeah that's it yeah we like to we do tend over decorate ourselves. But I find I've got to tell you you're right about Afghanistan and the Iraq thing I don't think we have an exit plan don't we. We never really did which was part of the problem winning the World was a foregone conclusion that was easy I mean and then nobody could doubt that the that that our military would win whatever the military is turned loose and allowed to fight you know. You're going to win so they should have had a better plan for what happened afterwards and there was about 6 months and there when everybody loved the Americans we you know got rid of Hussein everybody was happy we had about 6 months to make this work and you know you start with making people safe you start with turning the power grid back on and getting people clean water and making sure their kids don't get shot up in the street and and the Americans wasted those 6 months forcing a constitution down the Iraqis throats that they didn't really care about didn't really understand were never going to really use and that's where the time went by the time it was over it was it was too late and a lot of those people who had jobs under Saddam Hussein's. Rule were tossed out when we came in we should have at least allow them to continue teaching and doing what they were doing absolutely I mean it there's precedent for that that goes back to World War 2 and even further back I mean you don't you don't start over at a critical juncture in time like that you you know you forget ideology for the moment and you focus on practical matters and that is like I said food water light power security that sort of thing and you know the whole constitution issue is just absurd a it's never been a democracy it will never be a real democracy if we don't even have a relative who should be advising President stand we're going to come back final hour to go we'll take phone calls as we talk about a little bit of history and a little bit of the future next time comes.
