On eve of halloween, 1975, Martha Moxley did not come home after a night of miss chief in connecticut. It began a four decade saga that resulted in the conviction of a neighbor, Michael Skakel, 15 at the time of the murder, convicted at the age of 41. The case brings the inner section of wealth, privilege and one of americas most famous families. Michael skakel is a kennedy cousin. His conviction has now been set aside because a judge ruled he didnt get an adequate defense. Now prosecutors trying to have that conviction reinstated. But his cousin, Robert Kennedy jr. , is out with an explosive new book today called framed, why Michael Skakel spent over a decade in prison for a murder he didnt commit. In the book, kennedy, a former prosecutor, lays out the case why his cousin couldnt have killed Martha Moxley that night. Kennedy says i shouldnt take his word for it, i should look at the facts. What i believe is completely irrelevant. You know, people should not trust what i believe. I have a relationship with michael. I strongly believe that hes innocent. That belief should not persuade anybody that he is innocent. What people should be persuaded by is the facts and thats been one of the pitfalls of this epic story from the beginning. This story, particularly for journalists, was too good to fact check. Skakel was convicted in part based on evidence that over the years his story changed and statements he made to classmates and acquaintances at a reform school. Kennedy says there are new witnesses who say the confessions never happened. According to Robert Kennedy jr. , the facts show that Michael Skakel has an airtight alibi. One the most powerful pieces of evidence is that he could not have done it because he was 11 miles away with five eyewitnesses, plus there was another eight witnesses at the house where the murder took place who never saw him the entire evening after they saw him leave. Over the years, whats been said is he has an alibi thats been sworn to by his friends and his family. That made people nervous. You know, thats an argument thats a plausible argument that all of the skakels were somehow involved in circling the wagons. This conspiracy to protect one of their own, which, by the way, anybody who knows the skakels, these are people who are extremely all of them very, very pious catholics. They would never, ever lapse into the kind of perverse Family Community to protect somebody who committed a murder. But even if they were inclined to do that, they the family is very, very chaotic and they lack the organizational discipline to maintain that kind of conspiracy over three decades. But kennedy believes family connections may have played a role in feeding a media frenzy which aided in skakels conviction. In all of the articles he was described as kennedy cousin Michael Skakel. That became his new first name. You have said in fact you feel responsible in a small way for his conviction. Well, i dont feel responsible, personally responsible for it the kennedy family. Right. I think that Michael Skakel would not be in jail if people had not been able to call him kennedy cousin. In framed, kennedy goes so far as to lay the blame of Martha Moxleys murder at the feet of two men who have never been suspects at all. Explain who they were. They were two city kids, one caucasian and one africanamerican, who were brought that night who went to greenwich that night. These two men were introduced to the rarefied air of greenwichs bell haven neighborhood by the cousin of kobe bryant and a former classmate of the skakels shown here being interviewed by michaels defense team. Well, their words were that were going to go caveman on her. And that meant that, according to bryant, that meant hitting her over the head, dragging l g into the bushes and sexually assaulting her. Did anyone see these two on that night, october 30, 1975, in the bell haven section of greenwich . Only tony bryant saw them that night. Theres never been any evidence introduced to tie the men to the murder and judges have rejected bryants claims before. While one of the men kennedy points the finger at didnt respond to our requests for comment, in the past both men have denied any involvement in moxleys murder. The lawyer for one man says his client is innocent. Everything i know from everything ive read, from everything ive heard, from everything ive investigated, and from everything i know, al hasbrook had absolutely nothing to do with this case. Period, full stop. Despite this, kennedy doesnt fear any legal consequences for himself. So having just said what you said, do you expect them to sue you now that this book is out . If theyre innocent, they should sue me. Youd like to see that . Id like to see that. I would love to depose them. This book is going to open up a lot of old wounds. Just full disclosure, i went to high school in greenwich and was just a few months removed. Just my first couple of months in college when this happened. But you remember it well. I really do. Its so interesting, it seems almost that hes daring these people hes naming to sue him because hed like to see this litigated in a court. No question. Then well have more on that. I mainly wanted to make a movie people could have fun for two hours. There is this terrific camaraderie. I was on the set and saw you guys together. There is a little bit of a throughput with snl. Did that help, the improv, with the movie . Definitely knowing each other before it was like oh, my god, this poor paul. I think so, yeah. There is a level instead of working the whole movie to kind of get used to each other we all knew each other and were so similar and yet different enough that it stays interesting. Its just yeah. It made it easy. I listened to what dan aykro aykroyd, one of the original ghostbusters said after he saw the movie, he said he thought there were more laughs and more scares in this one. How much has the advancement of technology allowed to make those scares bigger . It really helps us. But the other thing we did, i made sure a lot of our ghosts are actually played by actors in full costume and makeup. Then we just gently enhance it so they can act with real people. Go down the line and give me a couple of adjectives and super latives about the character you play. Sexy and real. My character i guess is like a fun whacko . Yeah shes way out there. So far out. Thank you, al. I would say a little straightlaced and probably has bran cereal for breakfast. I never thought of it that way. I would say im pretty steadfast and she may eat a hot dog for breakfast. This starts with an attack by islamic militants in paris, which of course we now know happened in november. I started working on the book in july of last year. Before isis had really gone international. They had not gone global. They were a regional menace. They were active in syria and iraq, but i felt it was really only a matter of time. As i looked at the recruitment patterns and what was really going on in europe, i thought that paris was likely to be first target. I thought that militants from neighboring belgium would play a role. I wrote the beginning of the novel and in november it literally came true. Your heart must have sunk. It did. I was working on the book. I have ooh residence in washington literally around the corner from the French Embassy. To watch the flowers piling and piling up at that memorial and to see the French Embassy so under guard in our nations capital, i considered setting aside the book waiting a year to write it. I decided to finish it as i conceived it. It is another book of course it is a gabriel alone thriller. But you have a female heroin who kind of takes center stage. I sort of structured the book differently and i moved my longtime heroin to the side for a couple hundred pages and i sent a woman a westerner into the caliphate. I recruited her, turned her from a jewish frenchjewish doctor into a palestinianarab militant and fed her into the belly of the beast. And it was i have a reputation of going to all the places that i write about. Suffice it to say, i did not go to the caliphate to set those scenes but it was an interesting writing exercise. Probably a good choice. I wouldnt really recommend going to syria at the moment. No. You mentioned international locales. I always get a kick out of this because you do go to some pretty cool places in the name of research. I do. You have sardinia in this book. Santorini. Israel. Lots of french settings. And, unfortunately, the United States. I chose to set the climax of this book in the United States. Yeah. In washington. It is very powerful an area you know well, of course. Let me shift gears. This is the part of the segment we like to call tease the writer.
