Fans who witnessed the event are still reeling. It was a horrifying scene for thousands of fans at atlantas turner field. Even the games sports caster. Witnesses say the man landed head first two sections below. Very close to where the families of the players were sitting. He came down like a thud on to the concrete steps. No documentary or book can tell the whole story of katrina. We went back last week to look at a few places wed be and reconnect with something that has come to mean a great deal to us. It wasnt a hurricane but a state of mind. If you were in the storm zone, it was the only thing you thought of for months and years. The storm didnt come and didnt go. It stayed and in many ways, its still here. The gulf of mexico roared up out of there. Storm surge almost 30 feet. Nobody has ever heard of a 30foot storm surge. And wiped out just house after house after house, and as you can see, its not exactly like theres a re rush to rebuild here, either. When people think of the hurricane they think of new orleans. But mississippi got hammered, too. Days after the storm earnest got his restaurant open again. His gum bbo is second to none. It was worth it. We got to cooking. That to me says a lot about us right here, you know. Thats what we did. This is the big bridge between the two it was destroyed in katrina as were hundreds of houses and businesses around here. Wednesday night early thursday morning you sleep in your car because there was no place to stay. There was independent folk around here. We dont count on the government for much but where is the cavalry . Nowhere was the cavalry needed more than in new orleans when the levees failed the city became a cruel example offing. Nearly every home was flooded. That wasnt the worst of it. When the flood from katrina got here to Saint Bernard parish, look at the tanks here ruptured sending 25,000 barrels into the surrounding community. 25,000 barrels. A year later we stood in a womans home. She couldnt stop crying because she felt like while her house was inhabitable she was suffocating. We saw acts of kindness.
