Harrison ford was injured after crashing his vintage plane after he reported trouble shortly after take off. We hear from his family for the first time. We have the latest on this story. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning. Harrison fords vintage world war ii plane is mostly intact. They are investigating here. He was in fair to moderate condition, his son tweeting he was battered but okay after doctors rushed to his aid. Witnesses can tell something was wrong. Hes going to land on the golf course. In trouble, Harrison Ford radios the tower. Engine failure. Immediate return. Clear for landing. The actors plane is going down. There is a plane down. Clipping at least one tree it slammed into a golf course next to the Santa Monica Airport where ford had just taken off. The plane instantly stalled and was gliding at that point. Doctors rushed in to help. Fuel was leaking and ford was bleeding. Dazed, but responding. He was wiggling about. He had pain as you imagine. Rushed to a nearby hospital its a miracle he survived. Ford seen here in the same plane that same runway two years ago. He is known for his legendary roles even playing a downed pilot. We are in trouble here. Osprey the 72yearold is an experienced aviator. I always make sure that i dont overchallenge myself. He close calls before but nothing quite like this. Real life hollywood drama that he will live to tell about. In 1999 he was in a scary Helicopter Crash that he and another pilot walked away from. His former Flight Instructor called him a serious and profession pilot. They had no choice but to land. He is expected to make a full recovery. Amazing vigil there in santa monica. Tom haynes has flown with him several time and is the editor of Pilot Association magazine. Thanks for being with us. Good morning. You have flown with Harrison Ford but not since 2011. How would you describe him as a pilot . Harrison is meticulous in his flying all the time. He does extra training more than is required by the faa and he does thorough preflight on his helicopter before the flight and he is cautious and capable. This is a world war ii era training plane. Is it more or less safe as we expect . It is a vintage airplane designed about 30 years after the Wright Brothers first flew. The aerodynamics are from that era and a modern airplane would handle differently, but its a safe airplane and goes through the same inspections that any modern airplane has to go through. They can be challenging to fly, but harrison is a capable pilot and has flown it a lot and does very well. Based on the information you heard and gathered what were the last couple of minutes like as he brought at this time in pretty admirably on the golf course. He did a very admirable job as a matter of fact. Pilots train for always looking for a place to go should there be a problem and particularly right after take off. We are looking at the environment to determine where should you go. Harrison had few option there is in this particular case around santa monica but he did a good job putting the airport off safely off the airport without injuring anyone. Thanks for your insight. Stephanie goss is near the airport with more on it. Good morning to you. Good morning. A few hours ago planes removed the plane so that air traffic can slowly get back to normal here. From our vantage point, you get a good sense of how much water surrounds this airport. It is a notoriously difficult place to land. All of the water has short runways and it gets harder. Passengers on the delta flight say the landing felt perfectly normal at first. The plane started to skid. You can tell people didnt have seatbelts on really tight. They made an emergency exit and just how close they had come to tumbling into the water. Just survived a plane crash. The only thing that stopped us was that gate. The aircraft had 127 passengers and five crew members randed on the runway in snow and fog. 2 3 of the way down it hit an embankment and a fence. Ground crews reported back to the tower. That was on the left side. Police had leaking fuel . The ntsb is investigating, looking closely at a number of factors, including weather conditions and managers say the runway had been plowed and earlier flights landed safely. 11 05, two planes reported good braking action. 24 passengers suffered injuries and several were taken to local hospitals. The rest felt luck tow escape unharmed. I got my crash out of the way. Odds are in my favor. Im good. And airport officials believe the pilot did everything he could to slow the plane down and the proof of that is how few veries there were. You get a sense of what a close call this was. As we were right before the landing gear came out, i heard the pilot discuss whether we would be in a Holding Pattern or not. The flight attend ants were discussing it and they said we are not going to be in a Holding Pattern. They are going to bring us in. I thought thats a good sign and saw the run way and it was white. Its nerve wracking but you think its going to be fine. And the wheels hit the runway and normally when a plane lands, the pilot releases the brake and there was a pull that the plane is showing down. There was none of that. You dont realize how fast the plane is coming in when there is no brakes. You are sliding for thousands of feet and you know whats happening, but your mind cant get there and you are holding on. Probably hal through the runway i felt the nose of the plane jerk left. It started to shake and bump and oxygen masks were falling. Its at that moment that you know. Your mind starts to go to this is really not the way its supposed to happen. You are in the first row and not only can you see whats happening and you are very, very close to the water and you can hear as well. I could hear the pilot saying we have no power, we have no power. I was the first i could see the water. There is a moment where you dont know what you are going to hit. What will slow us down. Will it be another plane or the airport . You have no idea. I saw the rocks and i saw the water. Its at that moment that your mind goes what happens if you go into the water . Do planes sink or float . Will i ever see my kids again . You were really terrified in that moment. Terrified because you are not prepared. I fly every month f work. Im a frequent flyer and i feel very safe on planes. Especially delta. I fly them every month. Its in that moment thaw are so unprepared for what happens. I saw the water coming. I saw what the pilots were seeing. The pilots did everything they could, but its no different than a car that lost control on ice except that we are going hundreds of miles an hour. In the moments i have i know the pilot came up to you. What did he say . He opened the door and at that moment i released when i saw him. Here he is a man. He put his arm around me and said im going to get you off of this plane and he did. How do you get through in this day and age where it seems like everything is focused on the external and not the internal. Remembering where your foundation and identity lies. Medical mysteries and cases that are unusual. Sometimes even the doctors couldnt figure them out. A young woman who came close to death a couple of times. She is now going strong. Kate snow has that story. Good morning. Christina beltran is an upbeat person. Optimistic and happy. She is literally oneofakind. The medical community has never documented another case like hers. At 24 years old, christina was living her dream in the big city. The california transplant moved in with her best friend from college. We are excited to live in new york and get on with our lives. Then the unthinkable happened. We were starting to unpack and she said what do you want for dinner and i woke up in the hospital. Christina had gone into cardiac arrest and saved by her fast acting roommate. She was on the ground and facedown and looked blue. It was scary. She had been testified in cpr. How lucky is that . Yeah. I could check this. Her parents rushed to her side. What are did the doctor tell you . He said the survival rate for cardiac arrest is 7. 9 and she is in a vegetative state. Christina beat the odds. How quickly did you recover and leave the hospital . It was eight or nine days which they said was one of the quickest recovery times that anyone stayed after cardiac arrest. Months later she felt chest pains again. They did an angiogram and it appeared to be cracked. It didnt add up. I work out every day. I run, i do yoga. There is no Family History and has no exposure and bad habits or cholesterol levels. The cardiologist tread christina from the start and he was baffled. Doctors used stents to open the arteries multiple times and they were only a temporary fix. The doctors said its clearly not working. You are bound to have a heart attack . At 25 years old, christina needed triple bypass. I remember them saying we had to do surge ra and i started to cry. Unbreak my heart she always sees the positive. There was no guarantee even this fix would last. A biopsy of her arteries unlocked a clue to her illness. It was not plaque causing the arteries they were closing. They were growing from the inside. Genetic testing found each of her parents carried a rare gene mutation and she received both from each parent. The gene she got from her mom and dad is a blueprint for the muscle cells in the arteries of her heart is defective. The smooth muscle cells dupe kad until the arteries close. Im the only documented case of it. The only documented case . Ever. Thats right. Her case is not just rare it was singular. That doesnt really happen in medicine. When it does happen its scary. Refusing to give up the doctor put christina on a combination of drugs. The medicine that we chose at the best guess hunch, we got very, very lucky and it turns out to be very effective for her. With frequent monitoring christina lives a normal and works in fashion and chronicles a popular blog unafraid of what the future holes. A lot of optimistic thinking and that gets everyone through things. You get that she is remarkably positive. The truth is after all of this they still dont really know how her genetic condition affects her heart. Part of why she wanted to talk to us is because she is a case study. The National Institutes of health are studying her and her family and hope that maybe by putting this on tv they will find a second case of someone who is young and had their arteries blocking over and over again. There has to be another person who has the same condition. Someone who might need the answer. How about her roommate . We wouldnt even have this story if they hadnt known how to do cpr. Fascinating. The other huge story we are talking about this morning is that Delta Airlines flight coming from atlanta that skidded off the runway at la guardia after it was landing. 27 passengers and five crew members landing in the snow and fog. Upon landing it skidded into the embankment. Flushing meadows bay is right there. It damaged the plane and it was leaking fuel. The passengers had to climb off on to the wing of the plane. There were minor injuries. 24 passengers with minor injuries and five were taken to local hospitals. Savannah talked to one of the passengers who appears on bravo. She asked what she heard and saw as they were getting ready to land. I heard them say we have no power. I could see the water. There is a moment where you dont know what you are going to hit. What is going to slow us down. The plane, the airport . You have no idea. I saw the rocks and the water. Its at that moment that your mind goes what happens if you go into the water . You wipe out any bits and i use kosher salt to clean it out. Thats a great tip. I love bone in rib eye. A Little Pricey but you slice it up and share it. We will do two. A little salt. A cast iron skillet really hot on the stove. A little pepper. Why do you like the bone in . More flavor. The bone conducts the heat and allows it to cook quicker. You do that and you get your pan nice and hot and put it in like that. What does the cast iron do . Cast iron gets really hot and maintains the heat. You are going to keep this on one side. About six or seven minutes. You flip it over and you have the nice seer. You take rosemary and thyme and you smash garlic and you naught in. Lay it on top . Lay it on top. You get the juices going. You can do this on both sides. It will be rare. If you want it a little more cooked, you will put it in the oven for about 350. How long does it take to cook to medium . About ten minutes tops. Slice along there and get that. And asparagus on a cast iron skillet. You get as thin as you can with a little olive oil.
