Can i just say brr . Yeah. Its cold all of a sudden. How about the change in weather for me the last 24 hours . Yesterday in florida it was raining, 14yearold girls. Raining 14yearold girls and now its just plain old raining and the temperature is dropping. Well have more on the weather with dylan dreyer in a second. Al is taking the day off. Lets get to the dramatic story overnight. The scene in chicago where a small plane has crashed near midway airport. John yang is there. What can you tell us, john . Good morning. Reporter matt, dramatic scene behind me. The tail of that plane sticking up out of the house. The amazing thing is when you look at that scene is that no one in the house was injured. I heard the plane flying by and then shortly after, it was like a loud crash. Reporter terrifying moments this morning after residents heard a Small Plane Crash into a quiet chicago neighborhood. The plane did crash in the front of the building in the living room. Two elderly people in the home were removed, checked by ems and theyre fine. Reporter the pilot tells air Traffic Controllers up in the air hes having a problem. I would like to come back and land. Im having trouble with the left engine. Moments later, they ask if hes okay. Are you still with me . Reporter the controllers confirm the plane crashed. He went down. Didnt make it to the air field. Okay. He did not make it to the field. It looks like he just went down short of 31 center. Reports from the midway tower that only one person on the airplane. We have not located that person yet. We have to shore up the building to go inside to do the final search. Reporter neighbors expressing relief that the residents of the home were found safe. Im glad that the family is okay and theyre kind of lucky, too. I guess were all lucky that it didnt start a fire or anything. Reporter the amazing thing, as you look at this dramatic picture, is that both people inside the house were able to get out through a back door. Officials are holding off on removing the wreckage until ntsb investigators can reach the scene. Matt, savannah . Amazing story. John, thank you very much. Overseas, two men broke into a jerusalem synagogue overnight and killed four people. Secretary of state john kerry immediately condemned it as, quote, an act of pure terror. Katy tur is following the story for us. Katy, good morning to you. Good morning, savannah. This has been viewed as a terrorist attack in the ultra orthodox community. The attackers are believed to be two palestinian cousins from East Jerusalem. Four worshippers are dead and eight others injured. Amateur video shows the Early Morning shootout between police and two attackers. Who stormed a jerusalem synagogue early this morning armed with pistols, axes and knives, according to witnesses. Heard one shot, two shots, then a flurry of shots, five or six, search shots. We all ran out. Reporter the violence gave way to a tumultuous scene on the ground as paramedics rushed to help the victims. Shot and killed the two and six people taken to hospital. Four of them still in serious but critical condition. Heighten security in jerusalem after this terrorist attack. Reporter within two hours, the chaos spreads to East Jerusalem as police storm the suspects neighborhood, firing grenades. The attack linked to soaring tensions between israelis and palestinians, fueled by disputes over access to jerusalems holy site. John kerry called the attack a pure act of terror. I call on the palestinian leadership at every single level to condemn this in the most powerful terms. This violence has no place anywhere. Reporter this incident, seen as retaliation for the death of a palestinian bus driver found hanged on monday, israelis claim suicide while palestinians called it murder. Hamas is praising todays attack and president mahmoud abbas. A state of emergency and activated the National Guard in ferguson. This, with the grand jury expected to soon decide whether or not to indict the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown. Ron allen is in ferguson. Ron, good morning to you. The governors declaration has certainly turned up the tension here and increased expectations that were all going to know very soon whether that grand jury will indict Michael Wilson in connection with Michael Browns death. All that has heightened fears. With protesters vowing to march until officer Darren Wilson is charged in the death of Michael Brown and Police Warning they will not tolerate violence, governor jay nixon said in a Telephone Press Conference he declared a state of emergency and called up the National Guard to prevent trouble. My hope and expectation in the coming weeks is that peace will prevail. But we have a responsibility to plan for an eventuality that might arrive. Reporter protest organizers are criticizing the governor, saying sending a military force to ferguson sends the wrong message. It kind of sends a message that we are expecting the worst. And i worry about that. I worry that it could have an escalating effect. Reporter for many, its a reminder of the days after browns death when protesters and heavily armed police turn this had suburb into a military zone. Demonstrators say theres no reason for a huge police presence. What happens when the decision comes down . We intend to make it peaceful. Reporter a show of force, police say, is still necessary. We dont want any officers injured by flying bricks and rocks. This is an extremely dangerous situation that has occurred previously. Reporter now theres word the fbi has warned police extremists may try to exploit protests to attack law enforcement, following a grand jury decision. Were in this together, st. Louis. Reporter as so many here, like the hometown nfl team plead for peace. The governor gave no more specifics about when a grand jury decision might come or when there will be warnings, as activists and School Officials have asked for so that families have a chance to prepare for whatever is going to happen. The polar plunge is in full effect across the entire country, freezing temperatures in all 50 states and heavy snow is burying cities around the great lakes today. Dylan dreyer has made her way to erie, pennsylvania. Dylan, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. I got my start in tv here in erie, pennsylvania, and lakeeffect snow is as quirky now as it was then. Weve got lighter snow here on the shore. If i swam out there, there would be snowfall rates of about 3 to 5 inches per hour. Just a shift in the wind will make its way on shore here and well start to see really heavy snow with low visibilities. Snow has been to blame for so many problems across the country this past weekend and yesterday as well. Were in dayton, ohio. We saw yet another deadly car crash because of the slippery roads. Now its all about the lakeeffect snow. Its already shut down roads from here to buffalo, i90 has shut down in areas where the snow is coming down. And about three feet of snow is already on the ground. Heavy snow even off Lake Michigan as well and rapid city where were seeing this really heavy snow. These bands of snow come in off the lake as this frigid air crosses over the relatively warm waters of the great lakes. And we are left with just feet of snow. Take a look at some of the lakeeffect snow warnings and the winter storm warnings were seeing along the shores of Lake Michigan, lake erie and lake ontar ontario. You can see that wind is pulling in that moisture. Lift shift in the wind will change all of those snow bands into a different area. Literally, you can go five miles up the street and see whiteout conditions and go a little further and see nothing at all. We are looking at feet of snow. Parts of new york state have already picked up about 30 or so inches of snow, getting closer to three feet of snow in that area. And then the cold is stretching across all 50 states, seeing at least one city with temperatures below freezing. So that cold is going to stick around today. Well see record lows by tomorrow morning and, yeah, that windchill makes it feel like its below zero in several areas. Savannah . The pride of erie, pennsylvania, dylan dreyer, thank you very much. Highs today will be running about 20 to 30 degrees below normal for this time of year. Tomorrow morning could be even colder than this morning in a lot of areas. Especially up across parts of the upper midwest, where temperatures will still be seeing cold. Thursday the same thing. And this morning, housekeeping is the focus. My hidden cameras are always handy, right in my pocket over here. Next week it all start, the busiest travel season of the year. Many of us going to grandmas house for thanksgiving, hitting the road, checking into hotels. Of course, when we step inside our hotel room, we assume its clean, the maid changed the sheets, disinfected the bathroom, cleaned everything. Im sure many of them do a great job but there are exceptions. New video from our hidden cameras exposing some dirty details. Housekeepings here. And shes changing the sheets. Or is she . Sanitizing the glasses. Or not. To find out, were booking rooms for two nights at some of the most Popular Hotel chains and riging hidden cameras to capture every dirty detail. Okay. This is how we found the room. Its made up. Now were going to make it look like i slept here last night. Then the card that has to be visible for them to change the bed. Were putting it right in the middle. We put soda in these glasses. To see how well they clean them. Throw some towels on the floor. Make the bathroom look used. After the first night we call down. Hi, can housekeeping come up and clean my room . Lets start at this double tree hilton. The maid quickly strips the bed, putting the pillows off to the side. She replaces the sheets with fresh ones. But, wait. Those dirty pillows she just took off seconds ago get a quick fluff. And go right back on the bed. Thats pretty disgusting, considering people breathe, cough, even drool on these pillows. Back in the bathroom, our cameras are also rolling. As she scrubs everything down. But then this. She uses a towel to dry the toilet, the shower and then, watch it, she use that is same towel to quickly scrub the counter. Thats where you put your toothbrush. At this holiday inn, were astonished again. The maid changes the sheets but not the pillowcases. Once again, putting the old, used pillows back on the bed. Remember, at all the hotels, we put out that card to change all the linens. Its disgusting to watch. Reporter we showed our video to jacob tomsky, who spent a decade working in hotels and was even a housekeeping supervisor. What do you make of the fact that the maids never change the pillowcases . Thats the number one thing they should change, obviously. You change the sheets, you change the pillowcases. And she put it on a dirty chair before putting it back on the bed. Reporter this next hotel had our experts squirming. The crowne plaza. All of our used drinking glasses. Remember, i drank soda out of these earlier. She puts them into the sink and turns on the water. Next, she gathers all the dirty towels from the bathroom floor. But watch. She holds on to one of them and sets it down on the counter to help dry the cups. Yep, the dirty towel used for who knows what is now being used to clean the glasses you could be drinking out of next. Watch. She even puts on those paper caps to make the glasses look sanitized. Then she uses the same nasty towel to wipe down the counter top, the toilet and the tub. She never uses any soap on anything. But she does come back to spritz with room spray so it smells fresh. In a statement to nbc news, the company that owns the crowne plaza and the holiday inn say health, safety are top priorities, performs regular inspections is working to review standards. The doubletree hilton told us cleanliness is and makes sure things are sanitized properly. The hotel plans to conduct a review and address any infractions. These maids are cleaning, what, 15, 20, 30 rooms a day . Absolutely. Is this their fault or management for not checking . Management should stay vigilant and check and make sure they have everything they need to do the job. Thats why spot checks are good and these hidden camera things are good. It allows us into the room when were not there. Our expert says in many hotels housekeepers arent even given the right tools to clean correctly. In some cases management doesnt give them soap or disinfectant so they use whatever they can, like whatever towels are available. Be specific. Call housekeeping when you check in. Tell them, can you please change all the bedding and mention the pillowcases, too. Or we used the glasses. Can you replace them . Better yet, the best advice. You know the plastic ones that come wrapped . Use those. You could do what matt says, headtotoe snuggy. Im glad you brought this up in the piece, these people work so hard. You leave to go to work early in the morning. Theyre already working. You come back late at night, the same person is still cleaning rooms. They dont get paid all that much. These things are inexcusable. Our expert even said its on management to make sure the processes are in place and they have the tools they need. What have you got tomorrow . So far theyve raised 10,000 for make a wish and now see air visits other sick kid. Kids want to be near here. Shell talk to them about what she went through. For people who are afraid of putting something in a hot flame, you have electric branders. Anywhere from 11 to 300. This is a really good one and safer than using an open flame. Can you do this with kids . You need to be using the actual brand. Dont give it to them. You can swap out the letters on the electric brand. Makes it nice and easy. It is so remarkable to see Stephen Hawking at this time in his life just when he gets the diagnosis of the disease at age 21. Almost all of us have only ever seen this genius in a wheelchair. I had seen him from a distance in his chair and overheard his sort of iconic voice. And he always had this extraordinary kind of rock star sort of quality, but i knew nothing. I was so ignorant. What was amazing about working on the film was discovering that story, his humor and he has such a vibrant character. Felicity, its a love story. We know so much about Stephen Hawking and his accomplishments. But the texture and the richness of his life that jane brought in and brings in is incredible. Absolutely. Thats what i kept finding, you know, and understanding this woman, this profound depth of love that she had and that they had for each other. And, you know, its a complicated situation, being a career and bei e carer and being cared for and how this couple survived and navigated their relationship was inspiring. They were there for each other constantly. By his side for 30 years. Eddie, what was it like for you when he was there on set, Stephen Hawking on set and jane, too . I understand it was a little awkward. What was amazing, we had actually met both jane and stephen before we started shooting, but ill never forget on the first day of filming, we were shooting in cambridge and i was playing a Young Stephen and jane came cycling past, came running over to me and went to my hair and said, no, no, eddie, his hair would be much messier. It was wonderful having the actual jane doing my hair for me. So sweet. Wonderful movie. Congratulations on all the buzz that is much deserved. You put your hearts into it it and it shows. Bravo. Moving over to our 30s, putting off Retirement Savings is a big mistake that people are making during this age. Its a mistake because the earlier you start investing the better off youre going to be. Compound interest is your friend. Start early. Start in your 30s, even though it may seem far off, start now. Compound interest, for example, if youre 30 years old, you save 500 a month. At 10 interest, 1. 7 million, age 65 as opposed to at 40. Ten years later it goes down to 650,000. You can see how quickly it goes down. The math is on your side in your 30s. Start investing as early as possible. And the tax benefit is on your side as well. Thats right. Investing in a 401 k plan. You can start with that, yes. Lets move on over to our 40s here. Big mistake, people not having Life Insurance. Yes. People put that off and think im going to live forever. They do. If someone is dependent upon your income, you need Life Insurance. If you have a family, get Life Insurance. Both spouses income is dependent on the family staying afloat, you both need Life Insurance. Even stayathome moms need Life Insurance. Do i get term, whole . What makes sense at this age. I suggest term. Its going to be the less the least expensive and probably your best bet. So, term Life Insurance is the way to go. Cool. Lets move on to our 50s now. The biggest mistake, hanging on to your mortgage for tax reasons. Yes. Whats the benefit of doing this . This is a tricky one. I would rather pay the interest and get the tax benefit versus paying the taxes on what i would have for the interest. And so the fix is to get completely debt free. You dont like this idea of hanging on to the mortgage . Not ideal, no. Again, well take 200,000 mortgage, youll pay 10,000 per year in interest, if its a 5 Interest Rate. People keep that Interest Rate keep their mortgage to get that tax benefit. Lets say you completely paid off the mortgage, then you have to pay taxes on the 10,000. If youre in the 25 tax bracket youll pay 2,500 to the irs. Pay off the debt as soon as possible. Exactly. Last one in your 60s, mistake a lot of parents make, they want to give back to their kids and loan money to their kids. They do. This is a fine line for parents, especially when you have adult kids. You want to help your kids but dont want to enable them. My fix for this is give it as a gift if you decide to give them money, not as a loan. Onetime gift. You dont want your adult kids dependent on you. You want them to be adults and out on their own. Thats a hard thing for a parent to do when they need help. It is. You can give them a onetime gift.
