President trump. Just two days away, a house race that a lot of folks see as a referendum on his presidency so far. Later, well catch up with Country Music star zac brown. This morning how his long road to stardom started in a restaurant kitchen. Plus his ode to dads everywhere, especially his m old man i finally got a dad song good enough to play it for him. I took him out to the car. Thanksgiving. At thanksgiving. And i played him just the demo of it, you know. A lot of tears. Lets begin with other news. That deadly Ship Collision off the coast of japan. The search and rescue mission for those seven missing u. S. Sailors now over after several bodies were recovered inside the damaged navy destroyer. Nbcs Janis Mackey Frayer is live in japan with more. Good morning. Reporter good morning, hallie. The uss fitzgerald took a huge hit and heavy damage to an area with berthing spaces where other 100 sailors were asleep at the time of the collision. There was a lot of water and not a lot of time. It was described as a traumatic situation, as the entire crew had to fight to save the ship from sinking. It took 16 hours to tow it to port, where divers were able to access those damaged areas and where they found the remains of the sailors who had been reported missing. The seventh fleet allowed us to visit the port today to take a look at the ship from a distance. From what we saw, the starboard side was crushed. There was a huge gash near the keel of the ship, and apparently the damage below the water line is even worse. What caused the collision is the focus of at least three investigations. The acx crystal, the container ship involved, was making a routine voyage to tokyo, but then it made a sudden uturn about 25 minutes before the collision. Now, this is a busy area for traffic. Typically traffic on the starboard side of a ship, where the crystal would be in relation to the fitzgerald gets right away, so its unclear what happened and why. The weather was calm and the fitzgerald is an advanced warship. It has sophisticated communications equipment. So there are a lot of Unanswered Questions here, and theres certainly quite a lot of grief for the family, the friends and the crewmates of those sailors who were lost. Hallie. President trump is spending his first weekend at camp david, but hes keeping a close watch on a congressional race in georgia. With election day just two days away, it is a reliably republican seat but the race right now is neck in neck, and losing there may mean bad news for the republicans and the president down the road. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is live at the white house with more. Hi, kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, hallie. The president is looking for ways to measure any kind of victory, and he was up early this morning already tweeting just after 6 30 about a range of things he says hes accomplished in his time at the white house. Of course back in november the president won the state of georgia easily, but tuesdays special election is shaping up to be a proxy fight over his presidency. Off with a wave, their first family weekend at the president ial retreat, camp david. But President Trump might as well be in georgias sixth congressional district, where a supercharged house race is a check of the trump political brand. At a rally for gop candidate karen handel, trump agriculture secretary and former georgia governor, sonny purdue. Some republicans may even be turned off by our president. I dont think you are. Reporter firedup democrats are flooding the race with campaign cash, hoping jon ossoff can flip a republican seat. When President Trump embarrasses our country or acts recklessly, ill hold him accountable. Reporter but ossoff sidestepped direct questions about President Trump. I think this race is about who can deliver for this community than it is more than national politics. Reporter the president needs a win too. Id also like to congratulate karen handel on her incredible fight in georgia 6. Reporter mr. Trump created the vacancy by picking atlanta area congressman tom price for his cabinet. Tuesdays runoff is the most expensive house race ever. 40 million and counting. The people of the sixth district, they are not about to let nancy pelosi or the people of california, new york and massachusetts tell us who our next congressman is going to be. Reporter of course the president has his own fights to wage. From the cloud of the special counsel investigation to new reaction from the cuban government aimed at President Trumps action to tighten u. S. N communist island. Cuba accused him of hostile rhetoric and taking a backwards step. Maybe a break from controversy could be found. The first lady tweeted about enjoying beautiful camp david for a family weekend. So maybe it was the fresh air and the open space at camp david that had the president up so early tweeting this morning. He is in campaign mode, and this week he will head to iowa for an evening rally. That, of course, is a trumppence event and not an official white house event. Hallie. Kelly, thank you very much. Chuck todd is the moderator of meet the press and he joins us now. Hi, chuck, good morning to you, and happy fathers day, sir. Thank you, hallie. Good morning to you. Listen, we saw this week this moment of unity that happened after the congressional baseball game shooting. People on both sides of the aisle said this is now a time to tone down the rhetoric, tone down some of that divisive talk that we often see. Youve been around politics for a while. Do you think this timeout is going to last . I think it really depends on what the leaders of both parties do and how much they do it. I think on capitol hill between members of congress, its going to last a little bit longer than it does in the populous as a whole. I think it really did sober up individual members. This was a this was rough. This was you know, this was personal for them. I think without the president having a leadership role here, its not going to last. I think the fact that he did not come out and also join in this chorus and say, you know what, Everybody Needs to tone it down, including myself. I dont know if we would ever hear that phrase, but im going to be skeptical. Until you see the president himself deciding to take a leadership role in this, its hard to imagine that it will have a lasting effect on our politics outside of washington, to be honest. The president , as we talk about him, he was on twitter not long after the shooting happened, the day half. Hes been on twitter even today. He has seemed to acknowledge that he is in fact under investigation. He hired this heavy hitter to his legal team. Him and his surrogates have seemed to go after people like the Deputy Attorney general, rod rosenstein, the special counsel, bob mueller. There is speculation will he or wont he fire either of them. Can you walk us through the chances of that happening and if it did, what the fallout might be . Well, look, i think for those that are skeptical that hell actually follow through on a threat of firing mueller or ordering the firing of mueller, if it takes firing the Deputy Attorney general, just remember, there were plenty of folks that warned him of the consequences of firing james comey, and he did it anyway. So i think you cant assume that he wont do something just because it seems as if it would be it would just create an even more perilous situation for him politically, particularly in congress. But that thats what hes setting himself up for, is if he does act on this with either the Deputy Attorney general or the special counsel, what i would call a very Fragile Coalition of republicans at capitol hill, who have not defended the president s actions, but have rationalized the president s actions, they will have trouble defending this at all or even rationalizing it. And that is the danger for him. If he goes down this road, republicans may start bailing on him. Let me ask you about a local race that has national implications. Kelly was just reporting on the georgia sixth. I know you know it well, a democrat looking to take the seat once held by newt gingrich. What are the chances here . A lot of folks see iit as a referendum on President Trump. Who do you think is going to take it, if you can predict it, and does it reflect the Trump Presidency here . Look, i think its more of a referendum on sort of the Republican Party as a whole right now. Health care has been the bigger driver in this issue than russia. You can make an argument that a Democratic Victory in this race, especially if its substantial, more than two or three points, will have a bigger impact on the future of this Health Care Legislation than anything else. Look, the implications are this, hallie. If democrats cant win under these circumstances, then theres going to be a panic inside the democratic party. Oh, wow, maybe the house is out of reach, paubecause they have win these type of districts. For republicans, losing this race, this could start a slow tidal wave of sorts, where all of a sudden incumbent republican members go, oh, 2018, i dont want to run, im out of here. You might see retirements. Youll see a lack of candidate recruiting. So thats the thats whats at stake here win or lose for both parties. Chuck todd, moderator of meet the press, thank you very much, sir. Any big plans for fathers day . Watching the open . The best plans would be not to have any plans. Chuck, i wish that for you today. Thank you very much. Be sure to watch meet the press this morning when chuck will be joined by senators angus king and marco rubio as well as jay sekulow, a member of President Trumps legal team. Now to the bill cosby trial. After saturday, a judge declared a mistrial in that Sexual Assault case. Cosbys defense team claimed victory, but as nbcs ron allen will tell us, the prosecution is not giving up. Reporter jurors arrived by bus back home in pittsburgh, refusing to talk about their epic deliberations, deadlocked on the fate of bill cosby. Cosby remaining silent. Aggravated indecent Assault Charges still hanging over him. While representatives read a statement from his wife, camille. How do i describe the District Attorney. Heinously and exploitively ambitious. How do i describe the judge . Overtly arrogant and collaborating with the District Attorney. Reporter but prosecutors sounded confident as well, wo without hesitation saying theyll put cosby on trial again. Our plan is to move this case forward as soon as fopossible. Reporter a statement from Andrea Constand adding these proceedings have given a voice to the many victims who have felt powerless and silenced. Including some of the more than 50 women who publicly accused cosby of sexual misconduct, allegations he has denied. Like jewel allison, who said she encountered cosby in 1990, in court to support constand. I thought it was just right there. Its like sitting in class and the teacher comes and writes it all out on the black board and it said two plus two equals four. Reporter constands case is the only one recent enough for criminal charges. You think eventually a court will convict him of a crime then . He walked out, but the bar is all around him. Hes in jail now. I could see it in his face. Reporter advocates urging the court to let more cosby accusers testify next time. The judge had said that would be unfair to cosby. Its too early to celebrate, mr. Cosby. Reporter as one trial ended, the judge saying the next one could get started in just 120 days. Ron allen, nbc news, norristown, pennsylvania. Seven u. S. Soldiers were hurt after a member of the afghan army opened fire in whats the second insider attack in a week. It happened at camp shaheen in the northern part of the country. The Afghan Commando was shot and killed and another was hurt. A taliban spokesman praised the attack but did not claim responsibility. Congressman Steve Scalise is in slightly better shape after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice earlier this week. His doctors have upgraded him from critical to serious condition. The House Republican whip had another surgery on saturday. Hes said to be more responsive and able to talk to his family, which undoubtedly considers that one of the best fathers day gifts they could get. And today is a great day for all the dads who want to sit back on the couch and watch a little golf on tv with zero guilt. The final round of the u. S. Open, of course, always on fathers day. Check out what happened on saturday. Golfer Justin Thomas made this crazy mini golfstyle putt for a birdie and went on to shoot a record 9 under par in the third round. He is one shot back from the lead going into todays final round. Well see if the pink pants make another appearance. You know, i golfed yesterday and had a shot just like that. I bet you did, girl. Only mine took that turn and just kept going. Good to see you. Nice to see you too. A little unsettled for this fathers day. Youll see how humid it is through most of the northeast, down through the southeast and back through the midwest as well. Thats going to be the trigger point for scattered showers and isolated storms just to the east of Oklahoma City and most of eastern oklahoma. We do have the thi t morning. Then as we go into this afternoon all the way from new england stretching right back down into arkansas, we have the chance of seeing some very gusty winds and very large hail with these storms. Then tomorrow its right through the tristate area, through albany, down through new york, illy and even d. Cph. Good morning. I am krystal klei. Looking at the forecast highs today, its going to be hot and very humid afternoon. 90 degrees in center city, and 86 in westchester. Down to 88 degrees in allentown. And we could see spotty showers north and west of the i95 corridor with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. 89 in voorhees today, and 80 along the jersey shore and 90 in areas like smyrna and wilmington this afternoon. And thats your latest forecast. Dylan, dylan, thank you very stick around, because straight ahead weve got the highs and lows of the week, including this mom who will stop at nothing to get in her daily workout. And we really do mean nothing. And the smart car driver who decided to take a new approach to drivethrough shopping you could call it. Wait until you see the clerks reaction. Plus is he a mad genius or just mad . The most controversial father in the sports world right now. Its all coming up on sunday today. As we head to break, our photo of the week. Dylan is here to help roll through the highs and lows of the week. Hi, dyl. Hi, hallie. Our first high goes to a highflying Senior Citizen in germany. At an age when most older folks may be trying to take it easy, she is going hard. She is rocking it at a gymnastics competition. Check this out. At the age of 91 years young. She holds the Guinness Record as the worlds oldest gymnast. This is from earlier this month at a festival in berlin. She is rolling through this routine. Talk about arm strength. Back in the 60s she trained gymnasts for the olympics and said she loves doing this because it helps prevent falls. Check this out, here she goes. Sticks the landing. Good for her. When youre 91, dylan i cant do that now, so i predict thats not going to happen. Our first low of the week goes to one drivers opinion of parking in the parking lot during a shopping trip. That is way too old school. So instead this guy in eastern china drives his smart car right into a convenience store, on purpose. It was raining and he didnt want to get wet running from his car into the store. Who among us has not tried to stay dry in a storm. The clerk was freaked out at fist. Look at him, he runs over. Give him an a for effort. Hes racing around to get the driver everything he needs. And then backing out just through the doorway. Amazingly nothing inside the store was damaged, but do not try this at home. So even when he got in, he still refused to get out of the car . Youre totally dry at that point. That is full drivethrough service. An amazing parking job, though. It fit perfectly. I would have scared of the side windows there. While today is fathers day, we cannot forget about all the moms who juggle ten things at once to keep the house running or maybe they juggle five kids at once like sara from dayton, ohio. No time for a workout . No problem. Watch this. Ow is that a baby or a free weight . Okay, thats a baby. Its also a great way to keep him from crying. Sara is a former nurse whos now a stayathome mom. She says she gets her patience from her grandfather and just tries to enjoy moments like this since the kids grow up so fast. Dylan, i see calvins future as a bicep curl. I tried it but its my dog thats fighting on my arm when im trying to move around and shaking her off. The focus is intense with her daughter running around and her son pulling her hair. Shes starting them fun. Its like a fun family workout for everybody. Perfect. Our final low of the week belongs to the opinion of the employees of two texas dining establishments that they have of each other. Apparently about a month ago the pure water ice and tea company got into a little bit of a fight with their neighbor, wendys, about offering free drinks to the texas tech football coach. Pure water says it made the offer first and then wendys tried to oneup them. So what do you do about it . Sign battle. Pure water got personal with this one. Burgers arent the only thing square at wendys. Nasty burn if youre into 1950s slang, i guess. Wendys didnt take it lying down, writing everyone knows wendys squares up. Then wendys parking only. Violators will be served pure water. Of course pure water has to have a comeback. Good thing our tea is stronger than your sign game. And then one more from wendys. Anything you can brew, we can brew better. A little nod to anned Irving Berlin song, very classly. Fra and from pure water, you better check yourself before you wreck yourself, wendys. They ran out of ideas at the end. Nobody in lubbock, texas, is going to be asking wheres the beef . Its on the signs. They say its all in good fun. It is in good fun. A little cheesy, a little corny, but its fun. And i bet they never thought this would go national, love it. Dylan, thank you very much. Yep. Coming up next, zac brown on Country Music stardom and how his dad made him the man he is today. Its a few minutes before 8 30, and happy fathers day. Krystal klei as the details of your forecast. Its already warm and humid start to the morning. 78 degrees in philadelphia, and 73 in the suburbs, and upper 70s for new jersey. Lehigh valley, and delaware is 76 degrees. As we get into the afternoon we could see spotty showers but otherwise mostly cloudy, breezy and 80s to around 90. And then no rain to track for now. Its a dry beginning to the day. New overnight, one man is dead and another in stable condition following a shooting outside of the center city nightclub. According to authorities, a fight broke out around 2 00 this morning and spilled out to arch street. At least 20 shots were fired and so far no arrests in the case. And the District Attorney says he will retry bill cosby. He was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a Temple University employee in 2004. Right now hes out on bail. And then the parade will be out there today, and now back to the today show. Have a good one. To a little bit of chicken fried and cold beer on a friday insight you might know that song, chicken fried, a celebration of life in the south by the Zac Brown Band. Their first hit single and ultimately named one of the top 100 country songs of all time. Zac brown knows a lot about good eating and good music. Before he hit it big, he started up his own restaurant and music venue, where hed fry up the food in the kitchen and then heat up the stage on his six string. Hes been playing ever since he could borrow the guitar under his dads bed when he was a kid. It has paid off. The Zac Brown Band has more than a dozen number one hits and three grammys under their belt. But its the latest single, my old man that hits close to home for brown. Willie met up with zac and his father for a special sunday edition of our sitdown. Driving around an old farm south of atlanta, country superstar zac brown has a vision. Right there will be the aquatic center. Reporter camp southern ground is a summer retreat for kids of all abilities, dreamed up by brown. A place he sees as a calling. Growing up, i was a camper and then a counselor and then a staff member at camp. I knew since i was about 14 that i wanted to play music. I knew that i wanted to build a camp for kids. Creating that type of a wonder now hes done both. Zacs success in music has made the camp possible. I remember one year at camp, i got to the put the damn guitar down award. That was the award at the end of the week. They created that just for you . Just for me, yeah. As lead singer of the band that bears his name, zac has spent his life surrounded by guitars, starting with his dads six string. I was connected to a guitar from the time i was very its. I would slide dads from under the bed, open it up and play on it. When i was 7, i started taking guitar lessons. The 11th of 12 kids, zac was raised mostly by his mom with visits to his dad every other weekend. At what point did you decide this is what you were going to do with your life. I remember the moment. I was 14. I was a at a coffee house in georgia watching shaw moens play and i knew thats what i wanted to do. Zac chased his dream relentlessly, touring throughout college. And in 2004 partnering with his father, jim, to open a restaurant and music venue called zacs place. Ive never had a restaurant before. We knew that we could make a lot of money bringing people in playing music and we knew we could cook, we knew how to feed people. We had no idea what it took to run a restaurant. So he calls his buddy, whose daddy owns the applebees franchise. He says were getting ready to shut down the applebees and redo it, so we got two big 26foot uhauls, two pickup trucks and brought back all the furniture. We took the brass bars, the foot rests, the cabinets, the chairs, tables. Everything. It was free. Hustling. Zacs place became home place for browns band. Zac even cooked the food, and then hopped onstage to perform for the growing crowds. When the family sold the restaurant, Zac Brown Band was ready to hit the road full time. So we did. Ten years of grinding, playing six nights a week, sometimes seven, sometimes six hours a night. When we first started off. I was born hustling, you know. And thats been a big gift for everything, for camp and for music and all of it too. Was there any point in that tenyear hustle where you said i dont think its going to happen. Im not going to get to that place i wanted to get to, as much as im hustling. There was nobody in the world that could tell me i wasnt going to get there. The bands big break came with their smash 2008 album the foundation. With hits like chicken fried. And a little bit of chicken fried cold beer on a friday insight and toes. Yeah, ill leaving ga the album won the group the grammy for best new artist. Were so honored and blessed to be here. It was recently certified five times platinum. So coming from all those bars, those beersoaked places, what was it like in 2010 to be standing there with a grammy in your hand . Zac brown band. I dont know. I had i have like blackout moments from that night. I dont know whether i think i stroked out a little bit or something. I dont know what happened. I had like when they announced our name and i stood up, i dont remember walking. I remember just being on stage for a second and how fast it was over. After six albums, 15 number one hits and two more grammy, Zac Brown Band is back at it. Their latest, welcome home is a return to the sound of the foundation. At the family table its a return too to family with the heartfelt single my old man a song inspired by a friends dad, but fitting for his own too. And zac is a dad himself. He and his wife, shelly, have five children. Where does that song come from for you. I always try to write a dad song. I tried a bunch of times and nothing was ever good enough. A good friend of ours, rodney shelton, everyone calls him old man, he passed away last year. And that song is for all the dads, the people that touched your lives. Learning how to be like my old man singing about wanting to be like him, helping him hold up posts and wire and things and him being a giant when i was a baby. He was a giant now me being a dad too, so it was in memory of old man. Theres a line in the song where zac says i hope hes proud of who i am couldnt be any prouder. The one thing that ive always said is that through all the battles and everything you have to do, just protect your integrity and help the other people. My old man finally got a dad song good enough to play it for him. I took him out to the car thanksgiving. At thanksgiving. And i played him just the demo of it, you know. Trying to fill the boots of my old man a lot of tears. What did you think when you heard it . Oh, i mean it was i was holding one of my little granddaughters in my lap, and she said, papa, youre crying. And i said youre right. I tear up every time i hear it and even talk about it. Even after nearly a decade at the top of the music world, zac brown still feels like that kid with the guitar at camp. I go out every time and im like, oh, my god, look at this. It never gets old, you know, and i never take it for granted because i know where it came from. That new album is literally about that journey. Dont give up, hold on a little longer. What dont kill you only makes you stronger. Well, the Zac Brown Band has tried out some other styles of music during their years together of the welcome home at made them famous. If you want to hear how zac had his first guitar stolen and to definitely not store them, check out our web extras at ek willie with kevin plank, the man who created the Athletic Apparel powerhouse under armour. How the guy who called himself the sweatiest player on the football field in college used that to launch a multi billion dollar business. Thats next week on sunday today. Dylan is back now with another check of the weather. Im going to be singing chicken fried all day. Its a good song to have stuck in your head, though. Lets take a look at the weather this week. Well see strong storms up and down the east coast as we start off the week. Record high temperatures out in the desert southwest, up around 120 degrees. By the middle of the week were watching the tropics. We could see the remnants or traps even ake its way toward t coast. By the end good morning. I am first alert meteorologist, krystal klei. Happy fathers day to everybody out there. Its going to be a hot and humid afternoon. Up to 88 degrees in allentown and we may see spotty showers especially north and west of the corridor, and this will be in the afternoon. 89 in voorhees today. Only around 80 around the jersey shore. And then 90 around smyrna and wilmington this afternoon. Latest forecast. So the nba draft is just a few days away, and its almost a lock that one of the first people to be picked will be ucla guard lonzo ball, and it will probably be his hometown l. A. Lakers. But on this fathers day, people are talking more about his dad than lonzo himself. Loud, brash, selfpromoting, he seems to be the poster child for the nightmare sports parent. But is he really . We sent nbcs Gadi Schwartz to find out for our sunday spotlight. Who cares . I believe it. Reporter every single day for the last four months, the world of basketball has been under a oneman media blitz. Youre going to look back and say, man, how did lavar know this. Reporter lavar ball has become the father the sports world loves to hate. You cant come up and tell me nothing. Reporter but regardless of how you feel about la raur. Theyre not going to come at you like that. Reporter its hard to argue with the results, his three sons becoming household names with more followers on social media than most players in the nba. His oldest, llonzo, the potentil number one pick in this weeks nba draft, leanglo and the youngest, lemelo who has scored 92 points in a single game. It doesnt matter to me. Reporter to hear lavar tell it, its all part of the plan. Its all lined up for us. I asked my boys, what do you think youre going to do with the last name ball . Read some books . No. Youre going to ball till you fall. Reporter hes only half joking but in full truth the walking reality show that is lavar and his boys is more than about success, its about family. Family is one of the strongest things that i believe is like the number one thing. When everything is gone, thats all you have left. Reporter and with family as the focus, he has carefully orchestrated each step of his boys lives. From their training as children to their High School Teams to their choice of college. And get this you think that theres a possibility they could be playing one, two, possibly three of them on the same nba team . Yes. Is that part of the master plan . If lonzo gets to the lakers, they just sign leanglo as a free agent and let him play for free. Oh, shoot, lets do the same thing with lemelo. Now they reunite as lakers in the nba and as grown men watch this show. Reporter hes even got the branding all locked up, demanding a billion dollar coownership deal instead of the traditional endorsement arrangement. These are the special ones. Reporter selling 500 sneakers, hawking his own Big Baller Brand every chance he gets. Even as he challenges the statute kwostatus quo, the aim is to empower rather than enrich. The brand is one of the biggest things you can get whether its a lot or a little bit, its still mine. Reporter his approach can be maddening to those in the mainstream. We need a lavar 3 show. Reporter even Shaquille Oneal and Charles Barkley have taken shots. Your sons life is his life. Its not yours. Reporter but in the stands and on tv, lavar is unfazed. Theres no such thing as bad publicity. Aint no bad publicity to me. You cant stop me from what im doing. Reporter its a script not unpresence dented in the world of sport. Think earl and tiger woods. Richard, venus and serena williams, jack and john elway. When it comes to your boys, what do you want them to see when they look at you . Heres a guy i can always count on. He got my back in whatever i do. We all care for one another, man. At the end of the day, youre not going to have anybody in your corner besides your family. You can always count on them and im grateful for that. Reporter they take their dads bluster with a grain of salt. Hes been talking like that since we were little. Reporter and a roasting by lonzo. That special moment when your dad sits you down and tells you where your going to college. Copyrights your name and then tells 29 out of 30 teams to not bother drafting you. Reporter they are enjoying the journey, but say they know their dad is preparing them for more than just basketball. You better love this game, because its going to stop. Like ive always told my boys, its fun in the beginning but its pain in the end.
