A philadelphia man a philadelphia man who spent 24 years behind bars for a crime he says he didnt commit celebrates his first night of freedom with his family. Shaurn thomas was released from prison hours before this joyous scene. One of the first things thomas did when he was released in schuylkill expressway yesterday was hug his mother. The philadelphia Innocence Project helped convince a judge to vacate the conviction for a 1990 killing. Thomas claimed at the time of the murder he was being held at the old Youth Study Center because he was there for a hearing on an unrelated offense. He had an alibi. Been a struggle. Hard struggle. Cant give up. Im thankful that im here to really see him walk out that gate. Thats all i wanted. With his fiancee by his side, thomas says he hopes to start a new life down south. Well have more in a moment. Hes beginning his first full day of freedom with us here in the nbc10 studios. Thanks for being with us. Youre welcome. Busy 24 hours to say the least im sure. Yeah. First is describe the moments first, describe the moments walking out of prison in allegheny county. What was going through your head . Doing it for myself and my family. My family and attorney said its about to happen. Its about to happen. Once i got on the other side of the gate and seen them, said, im here. Youd been waiting for this moment for literally decades. Yeah. 24 years. Were you always hopeful, or were there times when you thought im going to spend the rest of my life in prison . No. I always had hope. Always had confidence that, you know, keep fighting. Keep searching. Its amazing with these kinds of stories, yours included, of people freed when new evidence comes to light in their case. You say you dont have a Golden Gate Bridge you dont have a grudge against the criminal justice system. I wouldnt say i have a grudge against the criminal justice system. I have a grudge against the way the investigation went. They took 24 years of my life that i will never get back or see my daughter grow up. Shes growing now. Or see my grandparents because theyre dead. A lot of time lost but time to make up. We saw this last night with your family. Yeah. Family supporting me and everything. We learned Manchester Police have arrested three more suspects in connection to mondays concert bombing. The attack killed at least 22 people including children. This morning in our area in camden, jurors will resume their deliberations in the d. J. Creato trial. Prosecutors argue that creato killed his 3yearold son brendan to reserve a relationship with his girlfriend who did not like children. The defense claims the prosecution has little physical evidence connecting their client to the boys death. A new jury pool will be summoned today in pittsburgh to select the final juror and six alternates for bill cosbys sex assault trial. Seven men and four women have been closen so far. Bill cosbys lawyers are accusing prosecutors of trying to keep black people off the jury. One of the jurors chosen so far, just one is black. The trial is set to begin june 5th in norristown, Montgomery County. Overseas, President Trump continues his first trip abroad with a visit to the vatican. He met with pope francis for about 30 minutes overnight. The two exchanged gifts. Pope francis gave the president copies of his three main teaching documents, and the president says he will read the documents. New details about the effect amtrak repairs at new yorks penn station will have on new jersey commuters. Governor Chris Christie says most commuting from new jersey to new york will be spared from big delays this summer thanks to a new agreement between new jerseys transit and amtrak. Only the morris and essex line service will be affected. The line will end at hoboken, reducing the trains traveling to penn station. Fares will be cut in half. Due to recent derailments and problems, amtrak will replace aging tracks and equipment at penn station from july through labor day. This as were learning more about the man police say blew himself up outside the Manchester Arena on monday night. 22yearold salman abedi said he was born and raised in the city he attacked. Nbc news has learned that abedi, whose family is from libya, received training abroad by a terrorist organization. Though his allegiance isnt clear, police have arrested his brother and not ruled out the possibility that he had help carrying out the daeltd attack. 22 the deadly attack. 22 killed, 59 wounded. The Empire State Building and roman coliseum among those dimming lights in memorial. People have been leaving flowers and messages in honor of the victims. Were also learning more about those victims including 8yearold sathi rose. The youngest victim. Shes being remembered in her village as a beautiful little girl. Were hearing from one of her teachers who says the thought that anyone could go to a concert and not come home is heartbreaking. Another victim. 15yearold olivia campbell. Her mother describes her as my darling, precious, gorgeous girl. Were also learning about 18yearold georgina calendar. She met Ariana Grande at one of her concerts in manchester two years ago. Investigators tell us the two suspected gunmen seen in this Surveillance Video pulled up on their bicycles on malta street friday. They opened fire hitting the father once and striking 2yearold price johnson four times. I was like, how can this baby be shot four times and be okay . I couldnt fathom it at all. How dare you shoot a 4yearold child . His father is doing okay. The family has not returned to their kensington home because they fear for their safety. 6 36 on this wednesday. 58 degrees outside. Neighbors in malvern, chester county, want to keep the search for a missing mother alive. Last night they passed out flyers about anna maciewjewska. State police say she vanished on april 10th. Her husband told officers she left their home in a panic and was late for work. Weeks later investigators found her car but no sign of the missing mom. Members of a Rowan University flerraternity are offering an award to help solve an arson at their house in glocester county. The fire damaged the house that the fraternity rented in glassboro. At the jersey shore tonight, wildwood officials could approve a measure to ban smoking on the boardwalk. Now if passed, the measure would go into effect in january of next year. Smokers who violate the ordinance could pay 1,000 fine or spend 90 days in jail. North wildwood is also considering a boardwalk smoking ban. Today Montgomery County will launch the pulse point app. The app lets people trained in cpr know when and where they can help someone who goes into cardiac arrest. The app could get trained people to the scene before First Responders arrive. Montgomery is the first county in southeastern pennsylvania to use the pulse point app. 6 37 on this wednesday. You got engaged in prison to a woman you met while you were behind bars. Yeah. I looked forward to getting married. Thats a dream of mine. You know, i look forward to it within the next six months to a year. Do you have plans to be in the philly area, out of the area . No, i have people in philly but then ill leave you think youll eventually move out of the area but potentially celebrating the wedding here so your family and friends can yes of course.
